When people in Europe look up at the sky, they sometimes see yellow dust clouds and “blood rain”. It may sound strange, but it happens because of dust storms from the Sahara Desert that travel thousands of kilometers. Climate change also plays a part.
More than half of the world’s dust comes from the Sahara, the world’s largest desert. Under hot, dry and windy conditions, dust particles (颗粒) are lifted several kilometers into the air and moved across continents (大陆), including Europe.
As the weather gets warmer, the soil dries out more, making it easier for the wind to blow dust away. If conditions get worse, the Saharan dust in the air could increase by 40 to 60 percent by the end of the century.
In Europe, the dust affects more than just the sky. Saharan dust can make the air worse and increase fine particles called PM10. These particles can go deep into our bodies and cause health problems like asthma (哮喘). In Spain and Italy, Saharan dust might be responsible for up to 44 percent of illnesses connected to PM10 pollution.
The dust also causes other problems. When it lands on the snow in the Alps, it makes the snow darker. In this case, the snow reflects less light from the sun, so it melts faster. The dust can also cause traffic problems for planes and cars by making it harder to see clearly.
To deal with the problem, it is important to bring back plants and protect the topsoil in the Sahara. In Europe, simple actions like creating more green spaces can also help.

Hobbies not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. Many scientists believe hobbies can help people stay active mentally as they grow older. A Canadian study even found that long-term hobbies may improve brain structure and memory.
The research studied 58 people who love bird-watching. Half were experts who had spent many years watching birds, while the other half were beginners. Both groups included people from their 20s to their 70s and had similar educational backgrounds. Scientists wanted to see whether hobbies could make a difference to the brain.
During brain scans, volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to choose the correct bird from four different pictures. The test was repeated 72 times using 18 kinds of birds. Some birds were local, while others came from different countries and were less familiar.
The expert group correctly identified 83 percent of local birds and 61 percent of non-local birds. Beginners only got 44 percent right for both. The scans also showed important differences in brain structure. Scientists found that the areas responsible for attention and working memory were more compact in the experts. In other words, these brain areas were more closely connected and could work more efficiently, even in older people. These areas also “lit up” when experts tried to identify non-local birds, but this did not happen in beginners’ brains.
Creative hobbies, such as music and dancing, are also good for the brain. A 2025 study found that dancers’ brains appeared over seven years younger than their actual age. AI research also showed that even 30 hours of creative learning could help improve brain health. Scientists believe creativity shapes not only culture but also biology.

Imagine you are on your way to take a very important exam. Suddenly, one of your classmates falls down beside you. This is exactly what happened to Jiang Zhaopeng, a 17-year-old student at a vocational school in Shandong on 10th May 2025. Jiang was on his way to take the Shandong Provincial Spring College Entrance Examination, which is a college entrance exam in China. His classmate had a heart problem and stopped breathing. Jiang didn’t think twice. He quickly used the CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 心肺复苏) skills he learned at school to help his classmate. With the help of the driver, they drove to the hospital in just 7 minutes. They even ran through six red lights on the way. In the end, Jiang’s classmate got better, but Jiang missed his Chinese exam.
This story became very popular on the Internet. More than 2 million people online said Jiang was a hero. They said, “He passed the most important test in life.” On 14th May, the Shandong Education Authority decided to give Jiang a special make-up exam. They used backup test papers to ensure fairness. Both Jiang and the driver, Wang Tao, got “Bravery Certificates (证书)” from the local government.
Teachers and experts said this showed how useful the first-aid skills we learned in school could be. These skills can help save lives in real emergencies (突发事件). When people asked Jiang about missing the exam, he said, “We can take exams again, but we can’t bring a life back if it’s gone.”
This event teaches us that being kind is more important than getting good grades. As an expert said, “Exams test our knowledge, but Jiang’s decision showed his good character, and he did very well in that test.” Jiang’s story tells us that saving someone’s life is the biggest success of all.
