The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are one of nature’s most breathtaking shows. This colorful light display appears in the night sky, mainly in areas close to the North Pole. Imagine the sky filled with waves of green, purple, and pink lights dancing across the darkness—it’s a sight that leaves people speechless.
The Northern Lights are created when particles from the sun, called solar wind, collide with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. These particles enter the atmosphere near the poles and mix with oxygen and nitrogen. When this happens, the gases release energy in the form of light. The different colors depend on which gas is involved: oxygen usually creates green or red lights, while nitrogen makes blue or purple ones.
Seeing the Northern Lights needs the right conditions. You need to be in a dark area away from city lights, especially in countries like Norway, Finland, or Canada. Clear skies and a solar storm, which sends more particles towards Earth, increase your chances of witnessing this wonder. However, predicting exactly when and where the lights will appear is still difficult, making each sighting feel like a lucky surprise.
Sadly, light pollution from cities is becoming a problem. Brighter streetlights and buildings make it harder for people to see the Northern Lights clearly. To protect this natural wonder, some areas have started reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting.
16.What causes the Northern Lights
A.Some clouds reflecting city lights at night.
B.Solar wind colliding with gases in Earth’s atmosphere.
C.Rainbows after a thunderstorm or a heavy rain.
D.Volcanic eruptions releasing light.
17.What decides the color of the Northern Lights
A.The speed of the solar wind. B.The different time of the year.
C.The temperature of the air in space. D.The type of gas involved in the reaction.
18.Where can people easily watch the Northern Lights
A.On sunny daytime in big cities.
B.At bright nights with lots of city lights.
C.On dark nights in the quiet countryside far from cities.
D.In busy shopping streets with many lights.
19.What can we do to help people enjoy the Northern Lights better
A.Use stronger streetlights in cities.
B.Build more tall buildings with bright lights.
C.Reduce light pollution in areas where the lights can be seen.
D.Increase the number of flights over the polar regions.
20.What is the best title for this passage
A.Traveling to the North Pole.
B.Science and Beauty of Northern Lights.
C.How to Photograph the Night Sky.
D.The Dangers of Solar Storms.

An Unforgettable Trip
I like traveling and I’d like to share an unforgettable experience with you.
Last summer, I went to Beijing with my parents. The weather was sunny and warm, perfect for sightseeing. We took a train there, which was fast and comfortable. During the trip, we tasted famous Beijing Duck. It was really delicious. We also climbed the Great Wall and took many photos. Although I felt a bit tired, I was very happy.
This trip was not only relaxing but also meaningful. I learned a lot about Chinese history. I hope to visit there again someday.
