Money can be passed from one person to another. It can buy things, pay for services, or sometimes it’s just a piece of paper. But a true story from a village in Sichuan tells us: there are more valuable things than money that can be passed between people.
Liu Guiying, a student from a poor family, had just received good news about her university admission (录取). Her retired primary school teacher, Fang Youze, heard this and went to visit her. He encouraged her to face the challenges ahead bravely. Before leaving, he took out 500 yuan from his own savings and gave it to her for her future study.
Deeply moved, Liu Guiying took a photo of the money and her teacher, sharing it online with a message of thanks. This simple act made the story spread widely. People were touched by the teacher’s selfless love and the student’s gratitude (感激之情) from the bottom of her heart.
The warmth of the story continued. The university that Liu was going to attend invited Mr Fang to the university to help her register (注册). Seeing his student start the new journey was the best gift for the teacher.
In his over 40 years as a teacher, Mr Fang has helped hundreds of students. The most beautiful part is that some of these students have now returned to their hometown and become teachers themselves. They are sharing not just knowledge, but more importantly, the same kindness they once received, just like a light passing from one candle to another.

In the Gaoligong Mountains of Yunnan lives a very special kind of gibbon. It is called the Skywalker hoolock gibbon. This is the only ape (类人猿) named by Chinese scientists. Sadly, fewer than 200 of them remain in the wild in China. Because they are in great danger, many forest guardians (守卫者) work hard to keep them safe.
Yang Youshan is one of those guardians. Now 50-year-old Yang has followed a pair of gibbons for 17 years. Over this long time, he has got to know their habits very well. For example, he knows exactly what fruits and leaves they eat in different seasons. This helps him easily find their tracks (踪迹) and ensure they are not hurt or hungry.
However, people knew little about this gibbon in the past. That changed in 2005 when someone took a photo of the first clear photo of one. That picture opened the door for scientists to study them more closely. After careful research, they discovered it was a new species. In 2017, scientists named it Hoolock tianxing, Skywalker hoolock gibbon.
Over the years, better methods have been used to monitor them. For instance, people now record their special calls to track their movements. Even so, only about 50 gibbons remain in the reserve (自然保护区). Human activities have pushed them into higher, colder areas that are not ideal for them. To help, people are now planting food trees and building rope bridges to reconnect fragmented (支离破碎的) forests.
In the end, for guardians like Yang, protecting the gibbons is more than a job. It is a long-term promise to these lovely animals and the forest they call home.
42. How many Skywalker hoolock gibbons are left in the wild in China
A. Fewer than 50.
B. About 200.
C. Fewer than 200.
D. More than 200.
43. What can we infer from Yang Youshan’s story in Paragraph 2
A. The gibbons only eat one kind of fruit all year round.
B. Yang Youshan wants to take the gibbons home as pets.
C. Yang Youshan is too old to follow the gibbons anymore.
D. Knowing the gibbons’ eating habits helps Yang protect them better.
44. Which paragraph tells us about the discovery of the Skywalker hoolock gibbon
A. Paragraph 2.
B. Paragraph 3.
C. Paragraph 4.
D. Paragraph 5.
45. Where can we most probably read this passage
A. In a storybook about animals.
B. In a nature magazine.
C. In a travel guide to Yunnan.
D. In a fashion magazine.

Have you ever heard of the avocado The fruit has hard green skin and a pear-like shape. It has a big and round seed inside. This seed can grow into a beautiful green plant. In fact, it’s not hard to plant it at home. Let’s do it together.
Materials ◇ An avocado ◇ Toothpicks (牙签) ◇ A spoon ◇ A glass ◇ A knife ◇ Water
Steps 1. Ask an adult to help you cut the avocado in half. Hold it with one hand and use the knife to cut around the middle. Twist (扭转) the two halves of the avocado in opposite directions until they come apart. 2. Use the spoon to take out the large seed. Then stick 3 or 4 toothpicks into the seed. Fill the glass with water and hang the seed above it. Let the sharp end face upwards. Put the toothpicks on the glass. 3. Place the glass in a sunny place. Otherwise, the seed will grow slowly and it may even rot (腐烂) easily. Add more water as needed. After a few weeks, roots (根) will begin to grow. 4. When the root is about 7cm long, take the seed out of the glass and pull out the toothpicks. Plant the seed in soil. Leave the top 2cm of the seed exposed (露出的).

二、书面表达
范文1
The Power of Teamwork
As an old saying goes, “A single tree can't make a forest”. Teamwork is really important in our daily life. No one can finish all difficult things alone.
Last term, our class took part in a group English speech competition. We divided the work clearly. Some wrote the draft, some practiced pronunciation and others designed actions. We listened to each other's ideas and helped one another. Finally, we won the first prize.
From this experience, I learn that teamwork helps us work better. As long as we pull together, we will achieve success.
范文2
The Power of Teamwork
As an old saying goes, “A single tree can't make a forest”. Teamwork plays an important role in our life. It helps us overcome difficulties and reach our goals easily.
I still remember our class relay race last year. At first, we worried about failing. But we encouraged each other and practiced every day. Everyone tried their best during the race. Thanks to good teamwork, we got a great result. We all felt so proud.
This experience teaches me that nobody is perfect, but a team can be. We should learn to share ideas and cooperate with others. Teamwork is the key to success.
范文3
The Power of Teamwork
As an old saying goes, “A single tree can't make a forest”. Teamwork is necessary for everyone. It allows us to make full use of everyone's advantages and do things more efficiently.
Once we were asked to create a poster for the school festival. We had different skills: some were good at drawing, some did well in writing. We discussed freely, divided the work properly and corrected mistakes together. In the end, our poster was highly praised.
I realize that success seldom comes from a single person. When we respect others' opinions and work as a team, we will go further and make greater progress.
范文4
The Power of Teamwork
As an old saying goes, “A single tree can't make a forest”. We can hardly succeed without teamwork, especially in group activities.
Last month, our football team had an important match. During the game, we didn't just run for ourselves. We passed the ball actively and protected each other. Even when we fell behind, we never gave up and cheered for teammates. Finally, we won the match.
I truly felt the power of teamwork. It not only brings us success, but also lets us make true friends. I will always value teamwork in the future.
