I always thought my grandmother was forgetful. Every morning, grandma would ask me the same questions: “Did you eat breakfast ” “Did you take your umbrella ” and “Do you have your keys ” I felt bored with her care because she asked too much. I would sigh(叹气)and rush out of the house before she could say more.
One rainy Tuesday, I forgot to take my key and got locked out of our house. I stood in front of the door angrily, kicking the wall for forgetting to take my key. Suddenly, the door opened. This was my grandma. She came back from shopping. She smiled and said, “I knew you’d forget to take your key today.” She took out my key from her pocket.
That evening, I was surprised because I noticed grandma’s bedroom drawer wasn’t locked as usual. I looked inside and found lots of notebooks. One read: “Xiao Ming’s Daily Needs — 2025.” I read through it and saw she had written down everything I needed in the notebooks.
“March 12: Forgot to take the lunchbox — pack(打包)more snacks tomorrow.”
“April 3: Math test today — don’t ask about scores, just make egg soup.”
“May 30: School trip — remind Xiao Ming about sunscreen(防晒霜).”
The last note was from that morning: “Rain — put an umbrella in his bag secretly while he wasn’t paying attention.”
Suddenly, all those “forgetful” questions made sense. I was sorry for my bad behavior before. She wasn’t remembering — she was recording, turning my carelessness into her responsibility. We often think that when someone loves repeating things, it’s because he or she forgets. But sometimes, people who ask a lot of questions are actually trying to remember what’s really important. I needed to thank my grandma. I realized that love isn’t about doing something big. It’s in the small, quiet acts, like grandma’s notebooks.

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸), and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. From Tradition to the Modern
During the Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese always put mugwort leaves on doors or windows to make the air fresh and keep flies and other insects away. Mugwort, a kind of plant, is highly valued for its medical use in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Chinese have been making use of herbs (草药) like mugwort to help people improve health or treat illness for thousands of years.
Nowadays, we are seeing more interest in TCM especially among the young. Influenced by TCM ideas, some young people stop having icy drinks. They accept hot Chinese herbal tea, instead. When people feel ill, some choose to go to TCM hospitals and clinics for treatment. With the spread of TCM, some schools start courses about it. For example, students learn to make joss sticks (线香) with herbs in class. More TCM programs appear on TV and the Internet, which can help people form better living habits.
In fact, the ideas of Traditional Chinese Medicine are everywhere around us. Following the natural rules can make us healthier. As an old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise.” TCM also pays more attention to the balance of diet. Different coloured foods are friendly to different parts of the body. White food is good for lungs, red for heart... If a body is like a tree, TCM focuses on its root (根). It aims at keeping the body and mind in harmony (和谐).
Chinese traditions are making a difference to our modern life.
