On February 1, 2025, Zara Lachlan became the first woman — and the youngest person — to row from mainland Europe to mainland South America by herself without support. She completed this 4,100-mile crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in just over 97 days.
Ms. Lachlan is 21 years old, and from the United Kingdom. She set off from Portugal in a special rowing boat on October 27, 2024. She would be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean with no one else to help her.
The trip is an extreme challenge for anyone. And Ms. Lachlan wasn’t just new to ocean rowing, she was new to the ocean. “The first time I ever saw a fish in the ocean was on day six of my adventure trip,” she said.
Ms. Lachlan had to clean the bottom of her boat regularly. That meant jumping into the ocean — something she didn’t enjoy at first, because she didn’t swim well. But Ms. Lachlan was determined. She faced many challenges along the way. Bad weather turned her boat over. An oar (桨) broke. After 40 days, her phone stopped working, and she couldn’t listen to music while she rowed anymore. Along the way, she hurt her arm, cut her leg, and broke a finger. At one point, she was nearly run over by a large ship.
But there were many upsides, too. For Ms. Lachlan, the trip was a chance to see nature as few people ever do. The sunrises and night skies were “wonderful”. During the journey, Ms. Lachlan found dolphins, sharks, and even killer whales.
After 97 days, 9 hours, and 20 minutes, Ms. Lachlan arrived in French Guiana, on the coast of South America. “Nobody knew I was coming in,” she said. “But I got clapped (鼓掌) by lots of fishermen from Brazil.” Ms. Lachlan nearly set a speed record for the journey. She missed that record by 19 hours. But in her heart, a deep-seated pride burned brightly. “I took on a huge challenge and won,” she said.
4. What can we know about Zara Lachlan according to the text
A. She was determined to complete the short trip.
B. She had no experience in ocean rowing before.
C. She came into close contact with killer whales.
D. She didn’t receive any welcome at the destination.
5. What was one of the challenges Zara Lachlan faced during her trip
A. She ran out of food quickly. B. She lost her way in the ocean.
C. Her phone broke after 40 days. D. Her boat was attacked by a shark.
6. How did Zara Lachlan feel about the fact that she missed that record
A. Still proud. B. Deeply worried.
C. Quite angry. D. Extremely regretful.
7. What does Zara Lachlan’s experience show
A. Easy come, easy go. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Interest is the best teacher. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
C
As a kid, you love hearing secrets. It’s an invitation to power and wonder. For adults Not so much. It can bring about stress and chaos (混乱). As most of us agree, sometimes, it’s better not to know everything, as heavy secrets can cause trouble and trap (困住) us in webs of lies. For example, a British woman Leona Gardiner hid that she got a better job from her husband who had no job, only to face his hurt feelings later.
Keeping secrets creates a mess of lies and half-truths, harming both mental (心理的) and physical health. Psychologist Geetanjali Dave explains that we weigh every word, watch conversations, and track white lies that build up. A simple question can get you into trouble and make you have to lie.
Research shows that keeping major secrets is hard. Psychologist Kara Khalil explains that keeping secrets places a mental load on the brain, draining (消耗) energy. The frontoparietal network (FPN), important for mental control, holds the secret in working memory, contains related thoughts, and directs attention. This juggling (兼顾) act leaves fewer resources for other tasks, making concentration difficult and leading to forgetfulness. Reduced attentional resources result in decreased productivity and dissatisfaction.
A 2019 Columbia University survey found that most people have secrets, with an average of thirteen. The more often people thought about their secrets, the lower their happiness. Follow-up research showed that worrying about secrets, rather than hiding them, is also detrimental.
While sharing a secret does not get rid of the need to hide it from others, it can greatly reduce the uncontrollable thoughts about it. Opening up to someone — whether a friend or even a stranger — provides emotional support and advice, changing the secret from great pressure into a manageable challenge.
8. Why does the author mention Leona Gardiner in Paragraph 1
A. To show heavy secrets can cause problems.
B. To explain how secrets break relationships.
C. To prove that adults are good at keeping secrets.
D. To introduce the topic of secret-keeping methods.
9. What is a direct result of keeping secrets according to Kara Khalil
A. Better social relationships.
B. Improved decision-making skills.
C. A drain on mental energy.
D. A stronger sense of personal control.
10. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Helpful. B. Harmful. C. Boring. D. Comfortable.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Truth About Secrets B. Secrets: Kids’ Favourite
C. Ways to Hide Secrets Well D. Secrets: A Weight on Your Heart
D
Before tools like Google Translate and AI became widely used, communicating with someone who spoke a different language was pretty challenging. But now, thanks to these tech advancements, it’s a lot easier to connect with people from different cultures. These tools are great for those with able-bodied hearing abilities, but people who are deaf or hard of hearing often can’t benefit as much.
In an effort to bridge the communication gap between sign language users and non-users, two University of Washington undergraduates designed gloves called SignAloud. Their creative invention earned them a $10,000 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize in 2017, and the idea is still ahead of its time today.
Navid Azodi and Thomas Pryor met during their freshman year where they discovered their interest in problem solving. At the time, they were studying aeronautics and astronautics (航空航天) engineering.
They developed the SignAloud gloves to recognize various hand gestures (姿势) used in American Sign Language (ASL) and translate them into spoken words and phrases in real time. Each glove uses sensors (传感器) to track hand positions and movements, sending the data wirelessly via Bluetooth to a computer. The computer studies the hand movements using simple maths, like a basic brain. When it knows a gesture, it speaks the matching word or phrase through a speaker.
“Many of the sign language translation devices (设备) already out there are not practical for everyday use. Some use video input, while others have sensors that cover the user’s entire arm or body,” said Pryor. “Our gloves are lightweight, and worn on the hands, but comfortable enough to use as an everyday device, similar to hearing aids.”
Azodi and Pryor had interest in building a device that would have real-world influence. “Our purpose for developing these gloves was to provide an easy-to-use bridge between native speakers of American Sign Language and the rest of the world,” Azodi explains. “The idea came out of our shared interest in invention and problem solving at first. But coupling it with our belief that communication is an important human right, we set out to make it easier to use for a larger audience.”
12. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To praise tech advancements.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To explain how to use AI tools.
D. To set off a discussion.
13. Why did Azodi and Pryor develop SignAloud gloves
A. To win the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize.
B. To practise their problem-solving skills.
C. To make money from selling the gloves.
D. To help sign language users communicate easily.
14. What is the main feature of SignAloud gloves
A. They are worn on the entire arm.
B. They can turn hand gestures into text or speech.
C. They use video input to track body movements.
D. They can translate spoken words into sign language.
15. Which of the following can best describe SignAloud gloves
A. Heavy and large. B. Handy and expensive.
C. Lightweight and comfortable. D. Warm and convenient.

Ben had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. Everyone in his family believed he would, too. Since he was a child, he had shown great interest in science — reading books about the human body, watching videos about medicine, and helping out in the school biology lab. He studied hard, did volunteer work at the local hospital, and even watched a doctor work during his summer holiday. Everything seemed to be going well.
But one afternoon, while walking home from school, he passed by the community park and saw a group of students painting a mural (壁画) on an old wall. Something made him stop. The colours were bright, the drawings were full of energy, and the students were smiling and laughing.
He walked closer. One of the students, a girl with paint on her clothes, smiled and held out a brush.
“Want to help ” she asked.
Ben paused (停顿) for a moment, then nodded. Just a few minutes, he thought. But the time passed quickly.
He returned the next day, and the day after that. For the first time in a long while, he felt a different kind of happiness — one that came from drawing, sharing, and working together. He never knew he liked art so much.
As the days went on, Ben started to think: Had he only focused on one dream for too long Could his future include both science and art Was it possible to follow both interests
One evening, he sat at his desk with a sketchbook (素描簿) in one hand and a science book in the other, thinking carefully.

Just then, his sister walked in and noticed the bright sketches on his desk. She asked why he had so many drawings. Ben shared his confusion about choosing between being a doctor and loving art. His sister told him that the two hobbies were not conflicting. Many jobs combine science and art perfectly. Inspired by her words, Ben made up his mind to stick to both dreams. He would keep studying hard for medicine and spare time to practise painting.
The next morning, Ben walked into school with a big smile. He went to join the students painting the mural again and painted confidently. He no longer felt puzzled. From then on, he balanced his study and art well. He realized that life could be wonderful when we bravely hold on to all our passions.
