Lifting a spear, Li Jingi palls it across her shoulders and spins (旋转) it quickly. Following her example, 10 peers in two rows wearing the same kung fu-style clothes produce the same movements.
Li is a 24-year-old student at Beihang University in Beijing, but she is more widely known on campus as a martial arts master. She has studied various martial arts styles, including boxing, swordplay, and the cudgel (短棍), and she has won several cross-campus martial arts competitions held in the capital city, reported Xinhua.
Li also leads the university’s martial arts club, which has grown from a team of two participants to over 30 active members. Having performed at the graduation ceremony for three years in a row, the club is now one of the most popular on campus in terms of recruitment.
“Martial arts have seen a significant increase on campus, and I’ve also heard that my middle school and high school have both opened martial arts courses of their own,” said Li to Xinhua.

On the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili, short videos on topics of traditional Chinese culture. such as martial arts, hanfu, Peking Opera, and calligraphy often receive a large number of likes and comments. “The fast development of the internet and social media also promote communication about traditional Chinese culture, enabling young people to have easier access to previously niche (小众的) art forms,” Song Yu, an assistant researcher at the Institute of Sociology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said to Xinhua.
For Li, practicing martial arts also means more than fitness training. “I don’t think martial arts is about fighting,” she said. “Martial arts is about finding the best version of yourself.”
4. What can we know about Li
A.She is better at swordplay than boxing.
B.She has been teaching martial arts for three years.

On October 11, NASCAR announced the car of tomorrow after a seven-year design program. People used to believe that science would promise a future of endless spare time and very cheap electricity. Nowadays the scientists’ predictions are a great deal less optimistic: the world is challenged by climate change and decreasing resources.
In fact, the car of tomorrow is a symbol of hope. The emission of carbon dioxide has contributed to global warming, but the car producers are waking up to their responsibilities. Investment in new technology to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental damage is not only improving the car industry’s act but also setting an example to other industries.
It is said that most cars of today run about 15 percent efficiency, which does highlight the potential for improvement. Get it right, and we could continue to enjoy the freedom that comes with owning a car, without the worries.
Of course, many advances have already been made. There’s evidence that the public is eager to buy cleaner and greener cars. And with petrol prices increasing there is no doubt that the cars with economical, efficient engines are going to be in great demand.
The good news is that we can all drive the car of tomorrow today, without having to worry about the purchase cost. By choosing our holiday hired cars wisely we can cut down on our fuel costs and experience an eco-friendly drive. Hire a green car and you’ll make a difference to the environment.
Designers will always enjoy catching our imagination with “concept cars” that look more like miniature(微型) spaceships than anything you see on the highway. Whether these creations will eventually become family cars remains to be seen. However, for the moment, there’s no doubt at all what the car of tomorrow will be, and it’s here today: something familiar and friendly that does its job with considerably less trouble and much greater efficiency than the car of yesterday.

11. What is the author’s attitude towards the cars of tomorrow

A handful of healthy soil could contain great numbers of living organisms. However, poisonous pesticides (杀虫剂) are causing harm and destruction to them, according to a recent analysis.
For the analysis, researchers looked through nearly 400 published studies including over 2,800 experiments on how pesticides affect soil organisms. They found that pesticides harmed organisms critical to maintaining healthy soils, but these harms have never been considered in the safety reviews of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Poisonous pesticides are driving factors in the sharp decline of many soil organisms, such as ground beetles. They have been identified as the most significant driver of soil biodiversity loss in the last ten years.
However, that research has always been ignored. The EPA, which is responsible for pesticide supervision(监管)in the country, openly acknowledges that somewhere between 50 and 100 percent of all agriculturally applied pesticides end up on the soil. Yet, to assess pesticides’ harms to soil species, the agency just uses a single test species, the European honeybee, to estimate risk to all soil organisms. It spends its entire life above ground in artificial boxes.
Worse still, as soil health gain popularity globally, pesticide companies have jumped up to green wash and promote their products. Every major company is now advertising its role in improving soil health, such as advocating planting cover crops. As general beliefs, these practices are indeed good for soil health and, if adopted responsibly, are a great step to take. But companies know that these practices are often accompanied by increased pesticide use. Chemicals and pesticides have to be applied more frequently to kill weeds before crops are planted.
The long-term environmental cost can no longer be overlooked. Soils are some of the most complex ecosystems on Earth, containing nearly a quarter of the planet’s biodiversity. Protecting them should be a priority, not an afterthought.
12. What does the underlined word “They” refer to in Paragraph 2
A.Soil organisms. B.Ground beetles. C.Artificial boxes. D.Poisonous pesticides.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.The honeybee is a typical species living in nature.
B.The assessment of pesticides’ harms is one-sided.
C.Less than half of applied pesticide go to the soil eventually.
D.The EPA attaches great importance to pesticide inspection.
14. Why do pesticide companies advocate planting cover crops
A.To obey the EPA’s rules.
B.To increase their product sales.
C.To protect the environment.
D.To shoulder their social responsibility.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Soil: essential to agriculture.
B.Pesticides: harmful to soil health.
C.Organisms: significant to harvest.
D.Pollution: destructive to biodiversity.

“Judy, hurry up! Let’s go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later, we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

However, what we saw shocked us. The once clear sea was covered with plastic bags and rubbish. There were few beautiful seashells left on the beach, and the fresh sea wind was mixed with an unpleasant smell. Grandfather sighed and told us that too many tourists threw rubbish everywhere, which seriously polluted the seaside. We felt really upset seeing our lovely hometown damaged like this.
Hearing Grandfather’s words, we couldn’t wait to do something to tackle the pollution. We first picked up all the rubbish on the beach and sorted it for recycling. Then we made several posters to remind tourists to protect the environment. We also called on local villagers to join us. Gradually, the beach became clean again. We made up our minds to keep protecting this beautiful place and hope it will stay charming forever.
