It was the day of the long run. Students from different schools were warming up.
I looked around and finally found Dali. He was standing by himself. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He thought for a while and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event! Dali had a brain disease (疾病), which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a normal kid. He always tried his best in whatever they were doing. It just took him longer— that’s all.
As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with (熟悉) the challenges Dali faced. I said gently and quietly: “You have a full preparation (准备) before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here.”
He was tripped over (绊倒) within the first few kilometres. All of us held our breath. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his run. According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits (好处) of technology. But we teachers also want to make sure that students can balance learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
To help students connect with others, we have built in several screen-free days during the course of the year. We make different plans for our students about how to communicate with others without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape (密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students have fun without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company (陪伴) of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students said they were surprised that they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with others is important.

A Chinese friend took me to a restaurant in Beijing to show me a famous dish. He told me it was something unique and I hadn’t eat it before.
