The Beginning of Spring (Li Chun)
Li Chun, known as the Beginning of Spring, is a traditional Chinese solar term (节气) marking the start of spring in the lunar calendar. It holds great significance in Chinese culture and agriculture, showing nature comes back to life and the beginning of a new agricultural cycle.
The Beginning of Summer (Li Xia)
The Beginning of Summer will bring lots of rain and lead directly to the harvest. Thus an agricultural saying is that “no rain, no rice” and “no rain, we will hang up the hoe.” During this time, the hot weather would cause people to lose weight and become tired. It becomes the custom to weigh and drink tea as this is considered a guard against the hot weather.
The Beginning of Autumn (Li Qiu)
The start of Autumn shows that the fruitful season is coming. It is time to harvest crops. There is a saying: If it rains on the day of the Start of Autumn, a good harvest is expected.
On the first day of the Start of Autumn, people will weigh themselves and compare their weight to what it was at the Start of Summer. If one has lost weight during the summer, then at the beginning of autumn, he or she needs to gain weight by eating a variety of tasty foods, especially meat.
The Beginning of Winter (Li Dong)
Li Dong means winter is coming. At the Start of Winter, there’s a tradition called “nourishing (滋养) the winter”. People in the past believed that as the weather gets cold, our bodies need more nourishment. A common way to do this is by eating lots of healthy foods like chicken, duck, and a special soup made with eight valuable Chinese herbs.

In Antarctica, my team really wanted to capture the moment when emperor penguin (企鹅) chicks jump into the ocean for their first swim. We had been in Antarctica for two months before it was time for these chicks to fledge. Fledging is when birds grow feathers that help them fly or, in the case of penguins, swim. Mom and Dad have headed out to sea for good, and the five-month-old chicks are realizing their parents aren’t coming back: They must hunt for themselves. So these penguin “teenagers” form little groups and start waddling (摇摆) toward the sea together. The young penguins look messy as they shed the soft feathers that keep them warm and grow out their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique boy-band-style haircut.
The penguins must walk about 15 miles from the home atop an enormous ice shelf to reach the water’s edge. We follow the birds from afar on snowmobiles. They crowd together at the end of the path and stare down like, “what’s that ” They’ve never seen the ocean before! To my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge of a 50-foot ice cliff! They stand together for four hours, staring at the rough water below. Finally one chick steps in front of the others, waddles to the edge of the cliff and dives off the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird won’t resurface in the water after the long fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther out to sea, never looking back.
At first the other penguins are like “Oh my gosh, what did Steve just do ” But then they realize it’s safe to jump. They begin to pour off the cliff, several little soft balls at a time. Some jump off stylishly, and others slip and fall backward. Some even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance into adulthood. They’ll swim out to sea and won’t return to the home for several years. How lucky we are to see this huge moment in their lives.
24. What does fledging mean for penguins
A.They’ll fly like other birds.
B.They’ll look for their parents.
C.They’ll look cooler than ever.
D.They’ll live an independent life.

Most of us have some “gut feelings” that we can’t explain. For example, when we hunt for a new house, we might suddenly like it a lot or dislike it right away. Or when we meet new people, we make instant judgements on them without careful thought. Research done by Leeds University shows that these feelings, or intuitions, are real and we should take them seriously.
According to the research, intuition is the result of the way our brains store, process and obtain information on a subconscious (潜意识的) level, and so is a real psychological phenomenon that needs further study to help us unlock its potential.
There are many cases where intuition prevented major disasters, and cases of remarkable recoveries when doctors followed their gut feelings. Yet, science has historically questioned the concept of intuition, labelling it as “anti-scientific”. Through analysis of a wide range of research papers examining the phenomenon, researchers have concluded that intuition is the brain drawing on past experiences and external cues to decide — but one that happens so fast that the reaction is on a non-conscious level. All we’re aware of is a general feeling that something is right or wrong.
Researchers believe that people usually experience true intuition when they are under severe time pressure or in a situation of information overload or acute danger, where conscious analysis of the situation may be difficult or impossible. They cite a Formula One driver, who once braked suddenly before a sharp U-turn without knowing why. This automatic reaction saved him from crashing into a pile of cars ahead, likely preventing a fatal accident. Though he couldn’t explain his urge to stop, it overrode his competitive drive to win. After psychologists showed the driver a video replay, he realized at that very moment the crowd wasn’t cheering as usual — they stood frozen, staring in the opposite direction as he approached the U-turn. That was the cue. He didn’t consciously process this, but he knew something was wrong and stopped in time.
Researchers believe that all intuitive experiences are based on the automatic evaluation of such internal and external cues. They say that we clearly need both conscious and non - conscious thought processes, but neither is superior to the other.
28. What does the research from Leeds University indicate
A.Gut feelings are not reliable in daily life.
B.People ought to trust their intuitive feelings.
C.Intuition is just a random psychological response.
D.Intuitive responses often lead to wrong decisions.
29. According to Paragraph 3, what can we infer about intuition
A.Intuition is a random guess with no logical basis.
B.Intuition only works in life - threatening situations.
C.Intuition relies on conscious analysis of visible dangers.
D.Intuition involves subconscious processing of external cues.
30. Which of the following real-life situations best illustrates the application of intuition
A.A shopper picks a product simply because its package looks attractive.
B.A firefighter suddenly reroutes a rescue mission after sensing some hidden risks.
C.A student solves math problems by strictly following formulas and logical reasoning.
D.A student quickly guesses random answers without consideration during a timed quiz.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article
A.To describe how brains process external cues.
B.To criticize the overuse of intuition in daily life.
C.To compare conscious and subconscious thinking.
D.To explain the scientific basis and value of intuition.

On Super Bowl Sunday, two teams take the field but only one will emerge victorious. In a presidential election, only one candidate can win enough votes to take the nation’s highest office. A zero-sum belief is the idea that for me to win, you must lose. However, psychologists have found that people tend to perceive non-zero-sum situations — such as the economy or classroom learning — as win-lose when they aren’t.
The new study found that as people age, this tendency decreases. The University of Chicago research team also discovered that younger people today are even more likely to engage in zero-sum thinking than previous generations.
According to psychologists, there is danger in perceiving a situation as competitive when it’s not. Immigrants are often perceived as hurting the economy or taking away jobs. “It is documented that this is really false. If anything, it’s exactly the opposite,” says study coauthor UChicago Professor Boaz Keysar. “Immigrants enlarge the pie, as opposed to taking away from others.”
The team ran four experiments surveying nearly 2,500 participants split between 18-to 30-year-olds and 65-to 80-year-olds. Each rated their agreement with general statements, such as: “If somebody gets rich, someone has to get poor.” In fact, people are not ranked against each other. Technically, everyone at the company could receive a high rating. But younger people are more likely to see situations as zero-sum. One reason is they perceive resources as more scarce, shaped by competitive education, job, and housing markets. Older people, by comparison, are more positive thinkers and have a more abundant mindset.
Exposing this bias is important, the research team says, because it’s key to accurately understanding the world. We also might be missing out on the potential for a win-win.
If you’re worried about your own zero-sum thinking, there’s hope. Time is on your side. “If anything, it might be a reason to call your grandparent, call an older person in your life. Get advice from them, because they might offer a different perspective,” Olivieri says.
32. How does the author introduce the topic of zero-sum thinking
A.By giving age-based comparisons.
B.By describing possible social effects.
C.By citing familiar real-life examples.
D.By presenting recent research findings.
33. Why does Professor Keysar mention immigrants
A.To highlight possible economic concerns.
B.To clarify the critical role immigrants play.
C.To show a wrong belief about immigrants.
D.To compare job competition among groups.
34. How are young people influenced by competitive environments
A.They consider resources as limited.
B.They gain a more positive outlook.
C.They feel more pressure from others.
D.They are more likely to avoid risks.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Zero-Sum Beliefs Across Generations.
B.Zero-Sum Thinking — I Win, You Lose.
C.Younger People Show Less Zero-Sum Thinking.
D.Listen to Grandma — Life’s not a Zero-Sum Game.

As a young child, I used to have no confidence in myself. Even when I was in the sixth grade, I still couldn’t ride a bike smoothly, a skill that many of my friends had mastered at a younger age. It made me feel like a slow learner, and the more I compared myself to others, the more I felt hopeless.
However, my elder brother Bob, who was always my source of inspiration and support, noticed my problem. He believed that I could get over this challenge, and he offered to help me learn how to ride a bike. At first, I was doubtful, thinking that I couldn’t master it. But Bob’s trust in me finally convinced (说服) me.
One day, we decided to go to a small slope (斜坡) near my home. Bob believed that it could make it easier for me to learn to ride. As we walked towards the slope, he kept encouraging me, “It’s not as hard as you think. You just need to get on and give it a try.”
Once we reached the slope, Bob first explained the basic rules of riding a bike and the importance of keeping balance. Then he helped me onto the bike and gave me a gentle push. All at once, I felt the wind rushing past me as I started rolling down the slope. My heart was a mixture of excitement and fear. I couldn’t focus on keeping my balance or keeping the bike in the right direction so my first try ended in hitting into the bushes (灌木丛) beside the slope unluckily. It was too much pain. As I stood up from the ground, the thought of giving up came flooding my heart.

Just at that moment, Bob rushed over. Seeing me hurt and frustrated, he helped me stand up gently and checked my injuries carefully. Fortunately, I only had slight scratches on my knees. Patting the dust off my clothes, he comforted me patiently and told me that failure was an essential part of learning. He added that every skilled rider had fallen countless times before succeeding. His warm words drove away my disappointment and gave me new strength.
With such encouragement, I pulled myself together and biked again. I took a deep breath, focused on balancing my body and followed Bob’s instructions. Though I stumbled several times, I refused to give up. Gradually, I mastered the skills and rode steadily along the slope. The breeze brushed my face, filling me with joy. This experience taught me that nothing is impossible with persistence and encouragement from loved ones.
