Does it really matter if we know how old animals are To many scientists, it does.
When studying animal numbers, it is important for scientists to know how many animals there are and how
old they are. This information can help scientists learn which animals are growing and which ones need more care
and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age.
For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some of their teeth don’t
come in till the certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth, milk teeth (乳牙)

and permanent teeth (恒牙). They usually get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then
they have the next pair at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four…
Hair and skin (皮肤) can also give some information about animals’ age. Some animals get bad skin and
grey hair as they get older. If you are keeping a dog, you may notice that its nose and mouth turn pink as it gets
older.
Animals’ eyes and ears might also help scientists tell animals’ age. As animals get older, their hearing and
their eyesight may become bad.
Scientists are finding more ways of telling the age of animals. Recently, scientists learnt that ________.
That’s really good news!

Should schools have a plant-based meal day A plant-based meal has no animal products, like meat, eggs,
or honey. Some say it’s good for us, but others don’t think so.
Many schools are giving more plant-based choices. On Fridays, New York City schools have a plant-based
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
meal as the main choice. Schools in Austin, Texas, give at least one dish only made with vegetables every day. A
study shows that about 5% of people in the US are vegetarians, and more people are choosing to eat less meat.
Experts say plant-based foods are healthier for both people and the world. If we eat 25% less meat, the air
will be much fresher and we are less likely to get sick. It’s easier to adjust (适应) to eating more plant-based foods
when you’re younger, and schools are a great place to start. Also, children may change their parents’ eating and
shopping ways too. And it isn’t hard to change fried chicken into vegetable pies once a week.
However, a plant-based meal doesn’t mean it’s nutritious (有营养的) or tasty, and some studies show that a
vegetarian meal isn’t great for growing kids. Schools could give more grains (谷物) , fruits, and vegetables, but
they could also use meat from modern farms. These products are more friendly to the world. Everyone should get
to choose whether or not they want to eat meat. Students should have their personal choices.
33.The underlined word “vegetarians” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A.meals with no vegetables B.people having plant-based meals C.meals with only
healthy food D.people eating meat and vegetables
34.According to paragraph 3, eating more plant-based foods in school may ________.
A.make a lot of people feel sick B.let the water become much cleaner C.change the eating
ways of parents D.give students more personal choices
35.According to the passage, what is special about a plant-based meal
A.It has no animal products, like meat, eggs, or honey.
B.It has both animal meat and fresh vegetables.
C.It is healthy for people of all ages.
D.It is nutritious and delicious.
36.What is the best title for the passage
A.Students Should Eat Less Meat B.A Meat-based Meal Day in the US C.Students Choose by
Themselves D.A Plant-based Meal Day in the US
