Climbing mountains is one of my favourite hobbies. Mount Emei (6) on my travel list since I was very young. I finally started from Baoguo Temple (7) a dark and rainy evening with two friends. I felt (8) about the coming night. Our wish at that moment was to (9) Jinding Peak before sunrise the next morning. However, when we finally found (10) under the highest layer of clouds, we saw glorious views of hills which had a kind of unimaginable beauty.

We went to Venice for a holiday. Gondolas (贡多拉) are considered as "buses" or "taxis" for Venice. The most interesting thing about (11) is that we took a tour sitting in a gondola, a small narrow boat similar to our dragon boat. It is made from eight different wood species and 280 pieces. The gondola which we took was beautifully equipped with bright red chairs for five people. It was (12) small and narrow that we had to be careful to keep our balance. The boatman was a strong, handsome young guy. He continuously pointed at the buildings we passed by and introduced them to us, and I noticed there was one building (13) "Marco Polo". He once stayed in China for a long time. I am certain (14) all Chinese people know that name. Bathing in the sunshine, watching the water softly kissing the stones of the buildings, I was full of peace and satisfaction. It was like a sweet dream. (15) I have free time, I will be there again. Whenever I think of this trip, a smile will appear on my face.

Starting with an orchestra (管弦乐队) playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a (19) new sound to my Western ears. The costumes and masks were amazing. How we feel about the show (20) not only the music but also the performances. The performers of course sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated (夸大的) movements and mime (哑剧) helped get the (21) across to the audience. The voices themselves sounded really unusual—some of the female voices were so (22) that I was sure they could break glass! And the stage was really simple: a decorated whip represented a horse, and a screen with Chinese characters, a study. Using such skills, the opera had turned a small stage into the whole universe.
Easily my favourite part of the show was how the characters (23) on stage. I had never seen Prince Hamlet do a backflip, rolling (滚动) his body backward like a wheel! That was simply unbelievable. It was so dazzling and energetic that I wasn't sure (24) the characters were performers or athletes! Everyone was clapping.
Before experiencing The Revenge of Prince Zidan, I wondered if I would enjoy it. But, in fact, I was on the edge of my seat! Feeling the strong emotions of love, anger, fear and sadness in the performance, I could easily understand the theme of Hamlet. So, if you want to see a show that (25) music, singing, drama, poetry and costume design with amazing effect, The Revenge of Prince Zidan ticks all the right boxes! I would strongly recommend it to you.

The word “encyclopaedia (百科全书)” comes from a Greek word that means “general education”. We use encyclopaedias to find information about different subjects. Nowadays, most people use encyclopaedias online, but some still prefer to use paper encyclopaedias. They often come in several volumes (卷).
China has a long history of creating encyclopaedias. One of the first encyclopaedias was the Huanglan (i.e. the Imperial Anthology). It was created around 220 CE. Another important encyclopaedia was the Yongle Dadian (i.e. the Yongle Encyclopaedia). The Yongle Dadian was completed in 1408 and had over 11,000 volumes. It is probably the largest encyclopaedia in history. Both the Huanglan and Yongle Dadian included important pieces of writing. These entries (条目) covered subjects like history, art and science.
Encyclopaedias in other parts of the world also go back a long way in history. The earliest known encyclopaedias in Europe were written by the Greeks in the 4th century BCE. They were similar to early Chinese encyclopaedias because they included works by different scholars (学者). Centuries later, the editors of the first modern encyclopaedias, like the Encyclopaedia Britannica, organized the entries in alphabetical (按字母顺序的) order. People could use the first letter of a word to find a subject quickly and easily.
Encyclopaedias have played an important role through history in recording and providing information. They are still a useful tool, and they help us learn about the world that we live in.

Imagine taking a long space trip with your pet. How do you both stay healthy in hard conditions like microgravity (微重力) and space radiation (辐射)
That’s where space-based animal research comes in. On Oct 31, China’s Shenzhou XXI mission launched (启动) with four mice aboard. This is the first time China has sent mice into space for experiments, following earlier missions with zebrafish and fruit flies, said Xinhua. After the mice return with the Shenzhou XX spaceship, scientists will further study how space influences their bodies.
Not just any mouse can become an “astronaut”. According to China Daily, these mice were chosen for their excellent performance during 60 days of training. They passed physical tests, like riding an “exercise bike”, and cognitive (认知的) tests, such as solving mazes (迷宫).
Mice are ideal for space research because they share genetic (基因的) similarities with humans, need little space and reproduce quickly, Huang Kun from the Chinese Academy of Sciences told Xinhua. Also, given their short lifespans (寿命), six months in space for a mouse is like over 10 years for a human. This allows scientists to predict long-term space effects on humans in just months, rather than years.
Internationally, sending animals to space began in the late 1940s to see if any life could survive the high rocket speeds or the weightlessness and radiation in space, said CBC News. Today, studies go beyond survival. “The animal work is helping us understand how to live a better life in space, making it a healthier reality, as well as helping us study a few diseases that affect us down on Earth,” a scientist said.
For example, space is ideal for studying osteoporosis (骨质疏松), as microgravity causes bone loss 12 times faster than on Earth, said UCLA Health. In 2017, a study with 40 mice on the International Space Station found a treatment that slowed bone loss and helped new bones grow, offering hope for keeping humans healthy both on Earth and in space.
Moreover, when we live on other planets, we can’t live without animals. Besides being friends, animals help keep ecosystems stable (稳定的) by pollinating (授粉) plants, maintaining food chains and more.
32.How long did the space mouse “astronauts” receive training before the launch
A. For half a month. B. For two months.
C. For six months. D. For over 10 years.
33.Why are mice ideal for space research
①They take up very little space. ②They have similar genes to humans.
③They can live for over 10 years in space. ④They can produce new generations quickly.
A. ①③④ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
34.How has the purpose of sending animals to space changed over time
A. From testing survival to learning to live better in space.
B. From studying diseases to checking rocket speed safety.
C. From improving life in space to finding new test animals.
D. From training animals to choosing those with good qualities.
35.What is the writer’s view on space-based animal research
A. It mainly helps scientists learn how animals survive in space, not humans.
B. It is too early to understand its real value, for further studies are necessary.
C. It is valuable for improving human health and supporting future life in space.
D. It is a doubtful practice, so much more time is still needed to get clear results.

The emperor s birthday was coming up, and he was celebrating with a big party!
He had the grand ballroom decorated and told his chefs to prepare a generous party.
The emperor was very vain (虚荣的), so his biggest decision was what to wear. “Summon the finest designers!” he ordered, “I want the most fantastic outfit (服饰) of all, but make sure that the clothes can be seen!”
A year ago, he had learned his lesson when two swindlers (骗子) had told him to wear an outfit that didn’t actually exist (存在)! Luckily, one boy was brave enough to point out that he wore nothing. Since then, the ruler made sure the things he bought were real.
Three fashion designers soon arrived to show him their designs.
“Look at this ruffled robe in green silk, trimmed with jewels from Bohemia! You will look exquisite!” said one designer.
“This vest combines puffy sleeves with a bold diamond pattern-very stylish! This look will set a trend, trust me!” said the second designer.
“For a classic look, you can’t beat this fancy tweed jacket adorned with delicate chains and accessories!” said another designer.
“They are exactly what I had in mind!” the emperor decided. “I shall have all three!”
Just then, the door opened with a bang. It was the kid who had once pointed out that the emperor had no clothes. The ruler had made him his minister (大臣), because he always told the truth!
“Why buy new outfits ” the boy asked. “You have rooms full of clothes!”
“But what will my subjects (臣民) say ” the emperor complained. “They will think I am short of money!”
The boy waved his hand. “‘Outfit repeating’ is a hot trend right now. Trust me!”
He went through the emperor’s room and quickly found some amazing clothes that the ruler had forgotten about. A local designer made a few changes to those clothes.
The party was a hit! The music and food were amazing, but the emperor’s old clothes caused the most attraction. He received lots of praise from his guests!
The emperor said to himself, “The boy is right, yet again.”
His old clothes were better than the new ones. It was all about how you wore them!
At the end of the evening, he admired himself in the mirror and thought, “Perhaps I shall be known as ‘the Emperor Who Wore Vintage (复古的)’ from now on!”
36.Why did the emperor want to make sure the clothes he bought were real
A. Because his last outfit didn’t look real at all.
B. Because he was tricked by two swindlers a year ago.
C. Because the boy advised him to check the clothes carefully.
D. Because the three designers refused to show him real clothes.
37.What does the underlined sentence “It was all about how you wore them!” mean
A. Clothes from famous designers are not always real.
B. Following fashion trends is the key to looking good.
C. People should wear old clothes instead of buying new ones.
D. The way you wear clothes matters more than what you wear.
38.Which of the following best describes the boy in the story
A. Brave but careless. B. Shy but careful.
C. Kind and organized. D. Honest and clever.
39.Which of the following best shows the emperor’s change of mind
A. “They are exactly what I had in mind!”
B. He ordered, “I want the most fantastic outfit of all.”
C. The emperor said to himself, “The boy is right, yet again.”
D. “But what will my subjects say ” the emperor complained.
40.Which of the following can be the best title for the story
A. The Emperor’s New Clothes
B. Three Fashion Designers and a Big Party
C. The Emperor’s Old Clothes: A New Fashion
D. A Truth-telling Boy and a Generous Emperor

41.Your Digital Footprint
Every time you go online, you leave a digital footprint. It shows where you’ve been, how long you stayed and what you’ve been doing there. Every time you use the Internet, send an email, play games, download (下载) a video or upload a photo, the information can be known to someone. This shouldn’t necessarily be worrying, but you’d better be aware of your digital footprint and be careful to keep yourself safe when you are online.
Here are some top tips for taking care of your digital footprint.
Remember to log off (退出) when you leave a website, especially if you are using a shared computer. If you don’t, someone else can easily pretend (假装) to be you! When using Wi-Fi hotspots in coffee shops, libraries and other places, try not to log in apps that need personal information.
Don’t tell anyone your passwords (密码) and don’t write them down in a place where others can see. Make them more difficult to remember by combining letters, numbers and punctuation marks.
Make sure that your blogs or posts are seen only within your circle of friends. Nothing is more important than your privacy (隐私). Just a click on your apps and software can make your files private and safe. Remember to do this, especially after making any changes.
Think twice before sharing details like your email, home address, WeChat ID, school or phone number with someone. If you want to post comments online, don’t use your real name. Instead you can invent a nickname. You can also use a picture instead of a real photo.
As teenagers, if you read anything online that makes you feel down and worried, remember to ask for help. Tell an adult you trust. There are also ways to report unsuitable content online.
Think about the future
Remember your favourite websites by using the history button and the bookmark on your computer or mobile phones. This is a way that your digital footprint can work for you, but remember to clear your footprint regularly (定期地).
All kinds of people are interested in your digital footprint. It’s now quite common for colleges, universities and bosses to check out the online information of possible candidates (申请人). There are cases of people having missed out on jobs and places in college because their digital footprint didn’t impress people.
So, remember: take good care of your digital footprint with the future in your mind!

For most of our history, we horses lived without you. Our story began more than 50 million years ago, long before modern humans a (1) . Our earliest known ancestor (祖先) lived in thick forests. She was small — about the size of a fox. She had four toes on each front foot and three on each back foot.
As the Earth's climate changed, those forests gave way to open grasslands, and we had to change. We became bigger. Our many toes turned into single, strong hooves (蹄子) that were perfect for r (2) across the fields. Our teeth changed, too. They were no longer f (3) for soft leaves. We ran wild across North America, Asia and Europe. Then, about 5, 500 years ago, something unusual happened. A group of humans in Central Asia tried to tame (驯服) our ancestors. From that moment on, our paths became tied together.
At first, humans used us for meat and milk, as they did with other big grass-eating animals. However, they soon discovered that our speed and strength could help them travel and carry h (5) things. Humans invented special equipment (设备) to help them ride and control us.
W (6) our help, humans could travel farther and faster than ever before. Over time, they didn't just use us — they depended on us.
