A
(2025·重庆八中高一期末)Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist born into a working-class family on 22 September, 1791. Faraday's father suffered from long-term health problems that often impeded his work. As a result, Faraday's family
had little money and Faraday got very little formal schooling. But Faraday had active curiosity and determination to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had access to a wide range of books and read everything he could get his hands on. By doing a lot of reading, Faraday soon educated himself on many scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Society given by a famous chemist named Humphry Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his service as a lab assistant. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday got a complete scientific education.
He soon began to do research and experiments on electricity. Although his time was mostly spent helping Davy, Faraday began to work on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Society. Upon taking up the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday's most influential and celebrated work began in the 1830s. In 1831, he
discovered electromagnetic induction (电磁感应), a breakthrough in the field of technology. In 1846, he gave a lecture that presented important ideas about the magneto-optical effect(磁光效应), and these later inspired the historical work of James Clerk Maxwell related to the electromagnetic field theory.

(2025·重庆高一检测)What kind of people can become scientists When a group of researchers posed that question to 9th-and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I'm not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It's easy for them to see a scientist's work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science.Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention (干预) to change students' beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday.Intellectual (智力的) struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while addressing a scientific problem and learning from them.Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support.Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance after-intervention, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom being exposed to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists.By recognizing a scientist's struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize (共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。实验发现,听取科学家努力奋斗的故事对学生成绩有积极影响。

5.Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists according to the passage
A.They lack interest in science.
B.They are short of confidence.
C.They don't have inborn talent.
D.They don't work hard.

6.Which stories will probably motivate students most
A.Michael Faraday was interested in chemistry and physics from a young age.
B.Marie Curie got involved in aiding soldiers of World War Ⅰ.
C.Marie Curie conducted the research mostly in a small, poorly built house.
D.Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize for his work with Theoretical Physics.

A.Science ability has nothing to do with talents.
B.Inspirational stories ensure students to become scientists in the future.
C.The intervention has helped clear up misunderstandings of scientific work.
D.Low-performing students tend to feel more connected to scientists.

解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But for high school students...feel more motivated to learn science.”及最后一段中的“By recognizing a scientist's struggles...during their own struggles.”可知,阅读科学家们的奋斗故事增强了学生们对科学家们的认同感,使学生们能够在自己的科学研究上产生共鸣,更有动力学习科学,即有助于消除对科学工作的误解。
C
(2025·淮安一中高一月考)If we want to define grit, the correct way to put it is as a non-cognitive trait (非认知特性) based on someone's ability to insist despite many challenges and obstacles to achieve a given goal. It is the trait that tells you to keep trying at something when everyone else has given up on you. It is a measure of emotional intelligence and well-being.
New research revealed that students with grit tend to gain a higher grade point average than their less gritty classmates. They are also more likely to win in spelling contests even with a lower verbal IQ.
Grit is equally important as intelligence. One of the most famous stories in science is how Isaac Newton came up with the concept of universal gravity. An apple fell from a tree, and this sparked the genius that later revealed the secret of why things keep falling back to Earth. Such narratives are very appealing stories but discouraging. There is no hard work, just a new concept produced by a gifted man. The apple story then proved wrong. It took many, many years of labor and failures before he came up with the concept. The purpose of this article though is not to undermine intelligence. Newton was clearly a genius, but intelligence alone would not have made him reach his goals.
“Nobody is talented enough to not have to work hard, and that's what grit allows you to do,” says Angela Duckworth, the foremost researcher in the field of grit study. In her study, Duckworth isolated two qualities that seem to define gritty people. The two important qualities separated are:
·The tendency to not give up tasks from mere changeability
·The tendency to not give up tasks in the face of obstacles
To end this post, I leave you with a quote from Kahlil Gibran, “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are burned with scars.”
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了毅力的概念以及与此相关的人物事例。
9.How does the author explain the meaning of “grit” in paragraph 1
A.By giving a definition.
B.By offering an example.
C.By listing some facts.
D.By making comparisons.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“If we want to define grit...achieve a given goal.”可知,作者通过给出定义来解释“grit”的含义。

10.What does the author want to say by mentioning the apple story of Isaac Newton
A.To show the importance of labor.
B.To show his born intelligence.
C.To show the importance of grit.
D.To show his great achievement.
解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The apple story then proved wrong...he came up with the concept.”可推知,作者提到艾萨克·牛顿的苹果故事是想展示毅力的重要性。

11.What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Stress. B.Lose.
C.Develop. D.Weaken.
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线词下文“Newton was clearly a genius...reach his goals.”可知,文章的目的并不是为了削弱智力的力量,故画线词意为“削弱”。

12.Which statement will Duckworth probably agree with
A.Gritty people favor changeable work.
B.Gritty people are more likely to insist.
C.Gritty people are allowed to work hard.
D.Gritty people tend to achieve higher success.
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Nobody is talented enough to not have to work hard, and that's what grit allows you to do”可推知,达克沃斯可能会同意有毅力的人更有可能坚持。

M:You ask me if I have been in a plane.Of course, I have. Now I tell you how I like it.
Last Monday I flew to Singapore. Thirteen days ago I went to the office in Kuala Lumpur and bought my ticket. Then very early on Monday morning, I went to the office again with my luggage and got into the bus with the other passengers.
The bus took us to the airport. There people took our luggage and put it in the plane. And then, after about twenty minutes, we got in, too. I was a little afraid at first, because it was my first ride in a plane, but a kind air-hostess brought us some sweets and spoke to me, and soon I was quite happy again.
We flew through some clouds. They were very white, like cotton, and beautiful. Then we began to come down because we were near Singapore. We went through the clouds and flew over Singapore. It was very interesting. When we got off the plane, I said, “I like flying!”

A 15-year-old high school student and young scientist in Colorado who has used artificial intelligence (AI) and created apps to address polluted drinking water, drug addiction and other social problems has been named Time Magazine's first-ever “Kid of the Year”.
Rao told The Associated Press in an interview from her home that the prize is “nothing that I could have ever imagined. And I'm so grateful and just so excited that we're really taking a look at the upcoming generation and our generation, since the future is in our hands.”
Time said Rao stood out for creating a global community of young innovators and inspiring them to pursue their goals.Rao insisted that starting out small doesn't matter, as long as you're passionate about it.
She told the contributing editor Angelina Jolie at Time in an interview that her scientific pursuits started early as a way to improve social conditions. The drinking water crisis in Flint, Michigan, inspired her work to develop a way to detect pollutants and send those results to a mobile phone, she said.
“I was like 10 when I told my parents that I wanted to research carbon nanotube (纳米管) sensor technology at the Denver Water quality research lab, and my mom was like, ‘A what?’” Rao told Jolie. She said that work “is going to be in our generation's hands pretty soon. So if no one else is going to do it, I'm going to do it.”
In a world where science is increasingly questioned or challenged, Rao insisted that its pursuit is an act of kindness, the best way that a younger generation can better the world.
“We have science in everything we're involved in, and I think that's the biggest thing to put there, that science is cool, innovating is cool, and anybody can be an innovator,” Rao said.“Anybody can do science.”

Faced with a declining population and workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the robots have carried out a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care for the elderly.
However, the robots currently being used by companies are only able to perform single, repetitive tasks, such as stacking boxes. Model-T has a wider range of movement and is able to hold, pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores, which sell a large variety of items.
Model-T robots are operated from a distant location by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in its hands and guide it to the right shelf.
The VR-controlled robots are ten times cheaper than automated robots, because they don't require advanced programming and are easier to develop and maintain. And their easy-to-use controls require little training. Tomohiro Kano, a general manager in charge of development at a minimart, believes that this will enable the chain to recruit workers who would typically not work in stores.
Though Model-T appears to be getting rapidly through the experiments, it is not quite ready to enter the workforce. Besides being a lot slower than humans, it is also only able to lift packaged items, and cannot get hold of things such as fruits and vegetables. The company is working to improve the weaknesses and hopes to introduce a faster, more skillful Model-T robot within the next two years. They believe that in addition to the stores, the robots could also be useful in hospitals, allowing doctors to do operations from remote locations.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations give us opportunities of our time—opportunities to terminate extreme poverty, to make sure that everyone can get food and clean water. In fact, there are many space services that can help us pursue the Sustainable Development Goals.
Communication satellites make it possible to make a phone call and have Internet service on the earth. This is particularly important during times of disaster recovery. When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, the local communication networks needed to be repaired, and teams brought in communication tools that could connect with satellites. This was useful during the time of repair and recovery.
In space,we have a laboratory on the International Space Station. The vehicle and everything inside are in a form of free fall around the earth, and they don't experience the effect of gravity. And because of this,we call it “microgravity”.When astronauts are in the microgravity environment, their bodies react as if they're aging rapidly.Their bones and muscles weaken, and the systems of their bodies change. As scientists study how to keep astronauts healthy in space,we can take the exercises and techniques we use for astronauts and transfer (转用) them to improve our health here.
Often,as we develop technology for astronauts and exploration for spacecraft,we can also transfer those inventions to help people on the earth.Filtration (过滤) system is one of the examples. It is a tool that liquid is passed through in order to remove any materials that are not wanted. With the help of filtration system, drinking clean water became possible for astronauts in space. The system is now being used around the world.
Space is also a great source of inspiration, through education, research and astronomy (天文学).Now,countries around the world are working at advancing their own development by increasing their local knowledge of engineering, science and space.

Every night as the whole family fell asleep, Catalina would slide from home to the Cerro Tololo observatory (天文台).Papa was the mechanic (修理工) of the observatory, but during the day Papa would not allow her to get closer to the telescopes there. Only at night, Catalina was allowed in with the permission of the night staff.
Catalina loved helping to service the grand telescopes, the eyes that looked out into the universe. She wanted badly to be an astronomer someday. Adults never took her dream seriously.Even her father laughed, “Maybe you'll be hired to clean the offices.”
One day in library, Catalina was reading a plant journal when she stopped at the picture of an unusual white flower.“It's called wild carrot.”A Spanish astronomer, who she saw several times in the observatory, stood behind her.“Pretty, isn't it I've always liked that flower, because it looks like a galaxy.”
“A spiral galaxy (旋涡星系),” she whispered.Blond eyebrows climbed the scientist's forehead. “Indeed. And what is your name, young lady?” he asked.
“I'm Catalina Solis.”
“Eduardo Solis's daughter The mechanic?”
“Yes.” She gave a look at him.“I want to be an astronomer when I grow up.”
He laughed kindly, no longer meeting her eyes, and patted her on the shoulder.“Yes, of course, my dear.Work hard in school, and it could happen.”
One evening, Catalina's eyes scanned the top of the observatory as usual.Suddenly she noticed the angle of the one-meter telescope was unusual. The telescope was pointed down, lower than she had ever seen it.Catalina learned from Papa how dangerous it would be.If left like it was, the telescope would move past its limit and be damaged. So, without hesitation she got inside the observatory.

She saw the Spanish astronomer buried in work there.Catalina walked over to him and greeted him with a smile. To her surprise, he handed her a notebook and asked, “Would you like to help me record the data from the telescope?” Overwhelmed by excitement, Catalina nodded and began to assist the astronomer. The night passed quickly as they worked together, recording and analyzing the observations.Catalina couldn't believe that she was working with a real astronomer, contributing to the scientific research she had always dreamed of.
The astronomer's words meant a lot to her.“Work hard in school, and it could happen.” Catalina took these words to heart and worked diligently every day.She was determined to become an astronomer one day and nothing would stop her.Years passed, and after graduating from college, Catalina applied for a job at the Cerro Tololo Observatory. To her delight, she was hired as an assistant astronomer, working alongside the same astronomer who had encouraged her all those years ago. Finally, her childhood dream had become a reality, and Catalina knew that nothing was impossible as long as she kept chasing her dreams.(共80张PPT)

*I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful.
我拥有一个有趣的童年。它充满了惊喜和乐趣,这一切都是因为我的充满爱意、温柔,却又心不在焉且健忘的母亲。
续写结尾:
*Despite Mom's being absent-minded and forgetful, she was still a kind and nice Mom, offering a great deal of happiness and unforgettable memories.
*It turned out that a simple act of kindness not only helped a person in need but also made a difference to the suffering community.
事实证明,一个小小的善举不仅帮助了有需要的人,而且为有困难的社区带来了改变。
(3)自然而然的结尾:顺应文章发展的自然趋势结束全文。自然式结尾简单、自然,使文章结构完整。
*Tired from fishing, we lay down on the river bank, bathing in the sun. When the sun went down, we returned home happily.
钓鱼累了,我们躺在河岸边,沐浴在阳光下。当太阳落山的时候,我们高兴地回家了。
2.四个高分结尾句型
(1)It turned out to be...;not only...but (also)...
*It turned out to be a rewarding experience, where Mary not only harvested friendship, but also became a better version of herself.
事实证明这是一次有益的经历,在这次经历中,玛丽不仅收获了友谊,而且成了更好的自己。
(2)One thing is for certain—主句;which引导非限制性定语从句
*One thing is for certain—Mary benefited greatly from this experience, which gave her the sweet taste of friendship and happiness.
有一件事是肯定的——玛丽从这次经历中受益匪浅,这让她尝到了友谊和幸福的甜蜜滋味。

[1]Maxwell stared at the huge pile (堆) of oranges. His neighbor, Mr. Foy, had hired him to move them all into the storage room. He had been working for an hour, yet the pile seemed hardly any smaller.
[2]Just then, his friend Jon showed up. Jon saw the situation and quickly realized the job would take quite a while. He suggested Maxwell use a wheelbarrow (手推车) to transport the oranges, which would speed things up. Maxwell's eyes lit up as he heard the idea.
[3]They found a wheelbarrow behind the storage room. Right away, they started loading the oranges into the wheelbarrow, pushed it into the storage room, and piled the oranges inside. With their joint efforts, the seemingly tough task was completed in a short time.
[4]Maxwell looked at Jon, whose face was red and sweaty from all the work. Maxwell was glad Jon came to help him today. He felt really thankful. Jon had given him a great idea and then helped with the job. Maxwell thought he was so lucky to have a friend like Jon. He decided that if Jon ever needed help, he would be there right away.
[5]Then, Maxwell rushed to tell Mr. Foy that he had finished. “Maxwell, I can't believe you've managed to finish all this work on your own in such a short time!” Mr. Foy said in surprise. Appreciating the boy's nice work, he gave Maxwell a $20 bill happily.
[6]Maxwell looked at the generous payment Mr. Foy had handed him. He felt a bit uneasy about taking all the money. He pictured Jon's red sweaty face and his brilliant wheelbarrow idea. He knew that Jon had played an important role in getting the job done quickly. Although Jon hadn't mentioned anything about payment, Maxwell felt he couldn't keep it a secret.

Albert Einstein, who is perhaps the greatest scientist in modern physics, is often considered one of the smartest men who ever lived. He made numerous contributions to the world, the most well-known being the general theory of relativity and the famous formula E=mc2.Einstein was not only a genius;he was a courageous and kind figure loved by many people.
This gentle genius was born in Germany on 14 March 1879. When he was 16, he tried to enter university in Switzerland, but failed due to his low scores in the general part of the entrance exam, despite obtaining exceptional scores in maths and physics. After studying for another year, he managed to pass the exam, entering university in 1896 and graduating in 1900.
After two years of looking for work as a teacher, Einstein took a job as a clerk in the Swiss patent office. While working there, out of a strong passion for knowledge, he continued to study, earning a doctorate in physics in 1905.That same year, which was later recorded as a miracle year in science, he published four extraordinary physics papers. Following this, he gradually became famous throughout the world as the new Isaac Newton. After four years, he was able to quit his job at the patent office and enter research full-time at a university. In 1922, he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect.
Circumstances changed in 1933, when Hitler came to power in Germany. Einstein, who was Jewish, found the doors of academic institutions closed to him. As a consequence, he had to flee Germany. After spending time in Europe, he finally took up a position as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.Following that, he continued to make great achievements in physics and mathematics.

(2025·合肥六校联盟期中)Using X-rays to peer into the
chemical structure of a tiny speck (微粒) of the celebrated
work of art Mona Lisa, scientists have gained new insight
into the techniques that Leonardo da Vinci used to paint his groundbreaking portrait of the woman with the mysterious smile.
The research, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, suggests that the famously curious, learned and inventive Italian Renaissance master may have been in a particularly experimental mood when he set to work on Mona Lisa early in the 16th century.
The oil-paint method Leonardo used as his base layer appears to have been different for Mona Lisa, with its own distinctive chemical signature, the team of scientists and art historians in France and Britain discovered. “He was someone who loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically,” said Victor Gonzalez, the study's lead author and a chemist at France's top research body, the CNRS. Gonzalez has studied the chemical composition of dozens of works by Leonardo, Rembrandt and other artists.
Specifically, the researchers found a rare compound, plumbonacrite (水白铅矿) in Leonardo's first layer of paint. The discovery confirmed for the first time what art historians had previously only assumed: Leonardo most likely used lead oxide powder to thicken and help dry his paint as he began working on the portrait. Plumbonacrite is a byproduct of lead oxide, allowing the researchers to say with more certainty that Leonardo likely used the powder in his paint recipe. “Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe,” Gonzalez said. “It's the first time we have confirmed it chemically.”
After Leonardo, Dutch master Rembrandt may have used a similar recipe when he was painting in the 17th century. “It also tells us that those recipes were passed down for centuries,” Gonzalez said. “It was a very good recipe.” But Mona Lisa and other works by Leonardo still have other secrets to tell. “There are plenty, plenty more things to discover, for sure. We are barely scratching the surface,” Gonzalez said. “What we are saying is just a small piece of the knowledge.”

According to a report by South China Morning Post, China is planning to launch a hyperloop (超级高铁), also known as a super-high speed pipeline maglev system by 2035. If the project goes as planned, the new train will be the world's fastest ground-based transport technology.
Chinese authorities have announced the approval of the country's first hyperloop line. It will pass between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. These are two key metropolitan areas for the country's economy, known for their large populations.
The distance between these two cities can now be covered in about three hours by car or an hour by high-speed train. However, the hyperloop can reach speeds of up to 1,000 km/h, which means that the route can be completed in just 15 minutes. That's about 5 times faster than commercial passenger planes and 10 times than traditional high-speed trains.
The proposed project will make China one of the pioneers in hyperloop technology, allowing faster travel between several major cities. The hyperloop provides a high-security level with low energy consumption. It reduces noise and pollution levels while still being faster than commercial flights and the fastest current bullet train. The technology will further advance China's position as a leader in transport.
A super-fast hyperloop train in China has completed its first test runs. These consisted of three test runs at a superconducting maglev test line in Datong, Shanxi Province that reached the speed of 50 km/h. However, the current tube available for trials measures only 2 km in length. It is expected to be extended to 60 km over the next few years.

My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved during the summer vacation, so I didn't have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends Would I fit in Would I survive in this strange new world Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn't know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us.Do you think you could help us?”“Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.

Something gradually changed after that. We got along quite well. We were often seen to study in the library as a group or walk to classes together. I tried to help whenever possible and shared my learning experience with them. I was really excited when I found learning methods which were suitable for them. With our joint efforts, their English performance improved significantly. The basketball players expressed their heartfelt gratitude to me after seeing their grades.
Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a lot of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them sometimes. Through basketball, I made more friends. Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others on my own initiative. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they changed me.(共58张PPT)

At the Nobel Prize Lecture on 7 December, 2015, an 84-year-old Chinese woman walked slowly on to the stage. She began to talk about the life-saving drug, artemisinin, which she had discovered with the help of her team in the 1970s. The woman was Tu Youyou, the first Chinese female scientist to be awarded a Nobel Prize for her work. A scientist who was on the Nobel Prize Committee called Hans Forssberg explained that “the discovery of artemisinin has led to the development of new drugs which have saved the lives of millions”. When thanking the Committee for the honour, Tu Youyou said, “This is not only an honour for myself, but also recognition of and encouragement for all scientists in China.”
Tu Youyou was born in Zhejiang Province, China, on 30 December, 1930.She studied medicine at Peking University Health Science Centre. After graduation, she became a member of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Later, she studied Chinese medicine for two and a half years with experts in the field from whom she gained a deep knowledge about traditional practices.
In 1969, Tu Youyou was chosen to establish a team to find a cure for malaria—a disease that killed millions of people every year. Across the world, scientists had been trying to find a cure. They tested more than 240,000 chemicals with no success. However, Tu Youyou had an idea that Chinese herbs might hold the secret. She studied ancient Chinese medical literature and visited experts in traditional Chinese medicine. She researched hundreds of traditional recipes connected to anti-malarial cures. Then Tu Youyou and her team began using modern research methods to study these Chinese herbs one by one.
This was not an easy task. The reason why this was difficult was that the team had limited resources. They did not have enough staff, and the laboratory in which they worked had poor air quality. However, after hundreds of failed experiments, they eventually came across a promising chemical. It worked well in experiments on animals, but they had to know if it was safe for humans, Tu Youyou bravely volunteered to be the first human subject when they were ready to start testing and the rest of her team followed her. The test was a success. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world's most effective drug for fighting malaria.
1.What can we infer from Hans Forssberg's words
A.Tu Youyou got the Nobel Prize for her anti-roundworm (抗蛔虫) treatment.

(2025·济宁兖州区期中)Edward O. Wilson, known as
“ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham,
Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination(着迷) with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his Bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson's early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: how ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later, in 1990, Wilson and German biologist Bert H lldobler published their Pulitzer-winning The Ants. It detailed the insects' social structure that was both valued by scholars and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson's major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Biogeography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson's most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic (基因的) roots of animal behavior and argued that genes shaped human behavior.
Wilson faced accusations (谴责) of these ideas but his work finally largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas of the role biology plays in human culture peaked in On Human Nature, which won him his first Pulitzer Prize in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 30 books. These accomplishments offered him a type of superstar status, but friends and colleagues said the polite biologist remained down to earth. “Professor Wilson really listened to and engaged with whomever he was interacting with,” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson's final advisees.

(2025·南阳六校月考)3M and Discovery Education announced Sean Jiang from Gilman School as one of the top ten finalists from across the nation for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It's a competition that encourages students to identify an everyday problem and submit a video showing the science behind the solution he or she came up with.
14-year-old Jiang decided to help those who can't see. Blind people have a hard time navigating(绕过) objects at medium or far distances. So Jiang wanted to design something to give them a heads-up on obstacles (障碍) that may be in the path.
Jiang's inspiration came from the power of the hearing system. “I learned in school that bats and whales are able to use echolocation (回声定位) to help them navigate and I also saw some very skilled blind people that use echolocation to help them walk on social media,” said Jiang.
Jiang started with a virtual reality setting and then made it a reality. His creation uses a depth camera that can detect how close objects are, thus giving enough time to avoid the obstacles. When a blind person is walking with the device, the sensor of the depth camera gathers the information regarding the obstacles' position and distance. Then the AI system in it will turn the distance data into musical sound guidance. This could significantly increase the walking speed of a blind person as well as decrease the number of obstacles they hit.
Some other similar programs were designed to find objects that were in close range, but Jiang still wanted the blind to experience the world even fuller so they were able to see stuff that was much further away than their circle of reach.
In October, the top ten finalists will compete in person in Minneapolis for the title of “America's Top Young Scientist” and a $25,000 prize.

“Buy Now, Pay Later”—BNPL
Adapted from Guardian
Shoppers who use “buy now, pay later” loans are to get new safeguards against unaffordable borrowing and credit card-style protection for their purchases, under rules outlined by the UK government. However, campaigners have questioned why the BNPL changes will not take effect until 2026, warning that consumers need to be “wary” in the meantime.
In recent years the market for BNPL has boomed, with many big retailers teaming up with lenders to allow consumers to spread the cost of their purchases. But while the loans, typically advertised at online checkouts, do not attract interest, concerns have grown around the ease with which borrowers can build up unaffordable debt.
Research carried out last year by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) found that 14 million people had used BNPL and that frequent users were more than four times as likely to have recently missed a payment for a bill or credit commitment than those who had not used the loans. The Treasury (财政部) said its new rules would allow the FCA to force BNPL companies to undertake affordability checks on would-be borrowers before people could sign up for a loan.
Bringing the sector under the financial watchdog's authority and applying the Consumer Credit Act to it will mean companies will need to provide clear, simple and accessible information about loan agreements so that shoppers can make fully informed decisions and understand the risks associated with late repayments.
Shoppers will also benefit from section 75 of the act, which protects purchases if a company breaches its contract or provides faulty goods. The protection, which covers good and services costing between £100 and £30,000, already exists on credit card purchases. The government said a consultation on the rules was due to end on 29 November “to reflect the urgent need for action to protect consumers”, but added that the changes would not take effect until 2026.

Excerpt from The Secret Garden
性格孤僻的小女孩玛丽、农家小子迪肯和体弱多病的少爷
柯林成了好朋友,他们找到了秘密花园的钥匙,和花园一起经
历了一次诗意般的复活。
Dickon stopped and lifted his face to look up① at the climbing and hanging sprays above him—“there'll be a fountain② of roses here this summer.”
They went from bush to bush and from tree to tree. He was very strong and clever with his knife and knew how to cut the dry and dead wood away, and could tell when an unpromising③ twig (嫩枝) had green life in it. In the course④ of half an hour Mary thought she could tell too, and when he cut through a lifeless-looking branch she would cry out joyfully⑤ under her breath⑥ when she caught sight of⑦ the moist⑧ green. The spade⑨, and hoe (锄头), and fork were very useful. He showed her how to use the fork while he dug⑩ about roots with the spade and stirred the earth and let the air in.
They were working industriously round one of the biggest standard roses when he caught sight of something that made him utter an exclamation of surprise.
“Why!” he cried, pointing to the grass a few feet away. “Who did that there?”
It was one of Mary's own little clearings round the pale green points.
“I did it,” said Mary.
“Why, I thought you didn't know nothing about gardening,” he exclaimed.
“I don't,” she answered, “but they were so little, and the grass was so thick and strong, and they looked as if they had no room to breathe . So I made a place for them. I don't even know what they are.”
Dickon went and knelt down by them, smiling his wide smile.
“They will be a sight ,” he said.
“I'm growing fatter,” said Mary, “and I'm growing stronger. I used always to be tired. When I dig, I'm not tired at all. I like to smell the earth when it's turned up .”
“It's good for you,” he said, nodding his head wisely .
“Do you never catch cold?”inquired Mary, gazing at him wonderingly . She had never seen such a funny boy, or such a nice one.
“Not me,” he said, grinning .
He was working all the time he was talking and Mary was following him and helping him with her fork or the trowel (小铲子).
“There's a lot of work to do here!” he said once.
“Will you come again and help me to do it?” Mary begged . “I'm sure I can help, too. I can dig and pull up weeds, and do whatever you tell me. Oh, do come, Dickon!”
“I'll come every day if tha' wants me, rain or shine,” he answered stoutly . “It's the best fun I ever had in my life.”
“If you will come,” said Mary, “if you will help me to make it alive ,” she ended helplessly .
“Sure!”said Dickon, “It's nicer like this with things running wild.”
“Don't let us make it tidy ,” said Mary anxiously . “It wouldn't seem like a secret garden if it was tidy.”
Mistress Mary always felt that however many years she lived she should never forget that first morning when her garden began to grow. Of course, it did seem to begin to grow for her that morning.
When Dickon began to clear places to plant seeds, Mary frowned a little. Mary, kneeling by him holding the seeds, looked at him and stopped frowning.
“Dickon,” she said, “you are as nice as Martha said you were. I like you, and you make the fifth person. I never thought I should like five people.”
