On the night of 30 Nov.1835, a boy called Samuel Clemens was born in Florida, US.Many years later, the world would know this boy as Mark Twain.
Mark Twain is one of the greatest US writers of all time.People consider him “The Father of American Literature”.
Like many US writers of his day, Twain had little school education. As a teenager, he worked as a printer.Later, he worked as a riverboat pilot, miner (矿工)and wrote for newspapers. These work experiences provided him with wonderful writing material.
Mark Twain is thought to be one of the funniest people of his age. That’s because his jokes go to the heart of human nature. In 1873, Twain brought out a book called The Gilded Age.The book made fun of the very rich people of that time.
Besides bringing fun into his works, Twain developed a special writing style that was very American. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn describes the adventures of a boy, Huck Finn, and a black slave, Jim.Twain used local dialects (方言), newly-invented words and local accents (口音)in the novel, making the characters’ speech sound like real Americans.
Twain’s writing style has influenced many writers.“All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” Ernest Hemingway wrote in 1935.
In 1910, Twain died of heart disease. But his talent keeps on shining to this day.
