Around the world, some buildings break the rules. They surprise visitors with their strange shapes, bright colors, and creative designs. Here are four amazing examples.
Habitat 67, Montreal, Canada
This housing complex looks like a pile of colorful boxes stacked in a playful way. Built in 1967 for a world exhibition, it contains 158 private homes. Each home has its own rooftop garden, giving residents a private outdoor space in the city.
Forest Spiral, Darmstadt, Germany
Completed in 2000, this apartment building is hard to miss. Its surface is painted bright pink, and it has a shiny gold dome on top. The whole building twists upward like a spiral. What makes it truly special is the nature: over 1,000 trees grow on its roofs and balconies.
The Basket Building, Ohio, USA
This seven-story building looks exactly like a giant picnic basket. Built in 1997, it serves as the headquarters for a company that makes baskets. Even the two handles on top are real, each weighing 150 tons. The building is a wonderful example of novelty architecture.
Stone House, Portugal
Built in 1974, this house sits between four large rocks. The rocks themselves form most of the walls and roof, making the house feel like part of the mountain. Inside, there is a fireplace and a small swimming pool. It has become a popular tourist attraction over the years.

While getting into Harvard Law School is never easy for anyone, Rehan, whose single-parent family was poor, made it by himself.
Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and “hungry for more”. Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.
Those hard times tested the family as a whole. The more stressed Rehan was, the worse his grades became. His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he channeled his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.
However, things didn’t go that way. His father was in bad physical condition and then Rehan had to take a job at Bates Trucking & Trash Removal. He was smart and worked harder than any others. His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him enroll (注册) at Bowie State University. Rehan earned a 4. 0 grade point average and was able to transfer to the University of Maryland. But Rehan’s struggles still weren’t over. During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风). Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Moreover, he began applying to Harvard Law School and made it.
With a sick father, a younger brother, a hard job, and a little time to learn, Rehan just had his own painful story to stand on. “Yes, Rehan has a quick mind, but what makes his achievement even more admirable is his courageous journey to this moment,” said his professor.
4. What does the author mean by saying “hungry for more” in Paragraph 2
A. Rehan was pained due to the lack of food.
B. Rehan wanted to get along well with his father.
C. Sufferings made Rehan more determined to fight.
D. Unlucky experience taught Rehan to take things easy.

A. He wished to change his life. B. He found his talent for sports.
C. He wanted to improve his mood. D. He tried to develop new hobbies.
6. What happened after Rehan went to work
A. His father’s health gradually improved. B. He was refused by Bowie State University.
C. He could continue his study with others’ help. D. His co-workers found the job difficult for him.
7. Which of the following can best describe Rehan’s days in college
A. Colourful but busy. B. Fresh and relaxing.
C. Adventurous and funny. D. Challenging but rewarding.

For most teenagers today, social media is as much a part of daily life as school or homework. A 2025 survey of 12,000 teenagers aged 13-18 from 15 countries found that the average teen spends 3.2 hours on social media every day. While social media offers many benefits, it also brings risks that need to be recognized.
One of the biggest benefits of social media for teenagers is connection. For shy or lonely teens, in particular, social media can be a way to make friends with people who share their interests. Some teens even use social media for good—organizing fundraisers for charity or spreading awareness about important issues like climate change.
But there are also significant risks. Cyberbullying is a major problem: 45 percent of the teens surveyed said they had experienced it before. Overuse of social media can also lead to lack of sleep—38 percent of teens surveyed said they got less than 7 hours of sleep a night, which is below the recommended 8-10 hours for teens. Mental health issues like anxiety and low self-esteem (自尊) are also linked to social media use, as teens often compare their lives to the “perfect” images they see online.
Therefore, experts say that limitation is key. Parents can help their kids create a “social media schedule”. Schools should teach digital literacy, helping teens learn to spot fake news, protect their privacy, and deal with cyberbullying. Social media companies also have a responsibility: they can add features (特征) like time limits, hide harmful content, and make it easier for teens to report abuse.
Generally, social media itself isn’t good or bad—it’s how teenagers use it that matters. When used wisely, it can be a tool for learning, connecting, and creating. But when overused or without caution, it can harm teens’ health and well-being. By working together, parents, teachers, and companies can help teenagers get the most out of social media while avoiding its risks.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A. By citing a survey. B. By describing a fact.
C. By giving an example. D. By making a comparison.
9. Which of the following statements about social media is true
A. Social media can help teens build friendships.
B. Cyberbullying affects half of the teenagers surveyed.
C. Social media can well develop students’ leadership skills.
D. Teens with low self-esteem often see perfect images online.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 4
A. The importance of setting rules for social media use.
B. Different ways to help teenagers use social media healthily.
C. How parents and schools can help protect teenagers online.
D. The responsibility that social media companies should have.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards social media
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
When things don’t seem to go right, what’s your first thought Do you just give up or do you make a promise to try a different approach If you give up the effort simply because you’ve run into difficulty, you’re not only giving yourself a reason to call yourself a failure, you’re also depriving (剥夺) yourself of the opportunity to learn.
Nothing in life stays the same. Everything is always in a state of change. Your ability to recognize change and make peace with it, while also finding the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions, will determine how effectively you can continue making progress toward your life goals.
Indeed, when you discover and accept your ability to be flexible, all things are possible. That’s because the realization that there are other ways to go about dealing with what happens in life and to find ways around seemingly impossible difficulties makes you stronger, more self-confident and satisfied. It also greatly improves your perception (感知) of your abilities.
Consider that overcoming difficulties is quite an achievement. When you combine that with the confidence you feel in being able to analyze and put together a workable approach or solution, you wind up with a positive outcome overall. This satisfying result adds to your motivation to solve the next item on your list, to go for another goal that may be a bit more challenging.
This ability to overcome difficulties doesn’t come about automatically, yet it is a talent you can foster. Indeed, it may seem like a losing plan, especially if you don’t see results right away. Instead of losing hope, keep on going.
Have you ever disappointed yourself despite your efforts when you’ve encountered challenges in adapting to changing circumstances Suppose you haven’t been able to figure out a way around them or couldn’t determine a workable approach. Is this a terrible thing Does it mean you’re certain to forever be at the end of the line when it comes to accomplishments It’s not like that. What it does indicate, however, is that you may yet keep some unforgiving thoughts about your own abilities. You may, for example, not trust your instincts (本能) or you might not believe you’re capable enough of taking a calculated risk.
12. We can infer from the first paragraph that ________.
A. running into difficulty is a valid reason to stop trying
B. it’s a rare thing for people to have a good opportunity
C. facing challenges offers learning and growth opportunities
D. it’s better to give up than persist when faced with difficulty
13. What can drive you to move forward successfully
A. Engaging in self-criticism for every perceived failure.
B. Missing chances to gain insights from challenging situations.
C. Abandoning efforts when confronted with a difficult challenge.
D. Overcoming challenges with confidence and achieving positive results.
14. What might be the cause of failing to adapt to changing conditions
A. You may have negative thoughts about your own abilities.
B. You may have a strong capability for taking calculated risks.
C. You are likely to give up on accomplishing anything significant.
D. You are guaranteed to be always at the forefront of achievements.
15. What message does the passage show
A. The importance of avoiding difficulties.
B. The need to give up when facing challenges.
C. The benefits of staying in your comfort zone.
D. The significance of flexibility and adapting to change.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I’d like to play a role in the show.” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch (女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of princess. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition (试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye ” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you ” Maye replied.
Long silence...
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly’s confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety-filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn’t even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting, “Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

Traditional Chinese Music Festival
To enrich campus life and promote traditional Chinese culture, our school held a “Traditional Chinese Music Festival” last Friday on the green lawn.
The festival showcased a variety of breathtaking performances. Some students played traditional musical instruments such as the guzheng and erhu. Others, dressed in Hanfu, performed elegant classical dances, adding a strong Chinese aesthetic atmosphere to the event. Still others presented beautiful songs with strong Chinese styles, which resonated deeply with the audience.
All the shows were attractive and impressive. The activity turned out highly successful. Not only did it bring students a feast of music but also enabled them to feel the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
【答案】Molly rushed home and burst out crying when her mother came. After her mom knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make witch impressed Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch’s personality traits, body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A few days later, the big day for the play arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly’s performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye’s as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understands a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
