Imagine a writer who described the times with nothing but words. That was Mao Dun (1896—1981), one of China’s greatest modern writers. Born as Shen Yanbing in Zhejiang, he later chose the pen name “Mao Dun”. With the help of his friend Ye Shengtao, this name became famous.
So what powers Mao Dun’s writing His masterpiece Midnight (Ziye), published in 1933, gives us the answer. The story takes place in busy Shanghai. It follows Wu Sunfu, a factory owner who fights against foreign competitors and dishonest officers. Through Wu’s sad story, Mao Dun showed the real problems China faced in the 1930s. The book was so popular that critics (评论家) called 1933 “the year of Midnight”.
Mao Dun could write about more than just cities. His Rural Trilogy (农村三部曲)—Spring Silkworms, Autumn Harvests, Winter Ruins—voiced the feelings of poor farmers. In these stories, good harvests (收成) sometimes bring disaster. This shows how big world events could shake even the smallest Chinese villages. Mao Dun could move easily from writing about business offices to farming fields. You can feel his deep care for common people on every page. But his real gift was his realistic writing style. With this ability, he recorded social changes so clearly that his books are like history and literature joined as one. Readers can almost see and feel the time periods he wrote about.
As we near his 130th birthday in 2026, Mao Dun’s works still speak to us today. They remind us that great writing is more than just for fun—it helps us see the world more clearly. For young readers today, his books open a window to China’s past and encourage us to value our own literary treasures.
23.What do we know about Mao Dun
A.The name Mao Dun is his real name.
B.His hometown made him famous.
C.He is among China's greatest modern writers.
24.Which is closest to the underlined word “powers” in meaning in Paragraph 2
A.提供电力 B.赋予力量 C.掌控权力
25.Why did Mao Dun write about both city people and poor farmers
A.Because he lived in both city and countryside.
B.Because he made money from them.
C.Because he cared about common people.
26.What does the writer think of Mao Dun’s works
A.Still valuable.
B.Too difficult.
C.Only historical.

As the saying goes, “Tidy space, tidy mind.” It’s time to do spring cleaning to clear out the old things you don’t need anymore. As well as freeing up space, it clears your mind.
Maybe you’ve been given new clothes, toys or books for some special reasons and haven’t yet found a place to store them. When you spend time indoors taking things out to use or play with, your bedroom gets messy.
“Clearing out the mess makes you feel good. A tidy environment allows you to stay focused on what matters,” said Dr. Roberts, a psychologist (心理学家). When your room is clean and tidy, you don’t need to spend ages searching for missing socks or schoolbooks. This frees time and space for the things you enjoy. Tidying up takes much time, energy and effort, but the results make you happy and relaxed. A tidy room also allows you to sleep better.
“Having a clean and tidy room clears my mind and makes me feel calmer,” says The Week Junior reader Harry, aged 13. “I like tidying up. At the same time, it can make places for my books and games, and help me to keep them in order and know where they are.”
When you start tidying up, set easy tasks, such as cleaning one surface or drawer at a time. If time allows, put everything on the floor or bed and sort (分类) into four kinds: ▲ : useful things you have good memories of.
Donate: things you don’t want but can give away, like books, toys or clothes.
Sell: have a tabletop sale or ask an adult to help you use an online marketplace.
Throw away or recycle: if it’s broken or worn out, then bin or recycle it.
27.How does the writer start the text
A.By sharing a saying.
B.By raising a question.
C.By giving an example.
28.According to the text, what are the benefits of having a tidy room
①It helps you focus on what's important.
②It makes you manage your time and effort better.
③It brings you joy and good sleep.
④It saves you time when you look for something.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④
29.Which word best fits the blank ▲
A.Forget. B.Keep. C.Buy.
30.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To explain why bedrooms get messy.
B.To encourage people to tidy up their rooms.

四、短文填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
In ancient China, people often gave willow branches (柳枝) as a special gift to friends or family members who were leaving. Do you know 46 willow branches became a symbol of saying goodbye
One main reason is that willow trees are 47 (strong) than most trees. They can grow well in any kind of soil, whether it is dry or wet. Because of this special quality, when saying goodbye to loved ones, people gave 48 (they) a willow branch. By doing so, people wished that their friends would get used to the new place 49 (easy).
Another reason has to do 50 language. In Chinese, the word for willow tree “liǔ” sounds very much like the word “liú”, which means “to stay”. So giving a willow branch was like inviting the other person 51 (stay), even though the givers knew their friends had to leave.
It is widely believed that this custom became popular during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’ an, was 52 common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow 53 (branch) to people who were going to depart (分别).
In the Tang and Song Dynasties, willow branches 54 (mention) many times in poems. For example, over a thousand years ago, the poet Wang Wei 55 (write), “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.” Even today, this tradition still reminds us of the deep feelings that are held within a simple willow branch.

Did you watch the Spring Festival Gala (春晚) this year If you did, you probably saw human-like robots. They jumped into the air and landed perfectly. People were surprised at how naturally they moved.
Just one year ago, Gala robots could only do simple dances. This year, they were doing backflips (后空翻)! Think about your smartphone—the one you have now—is way better than from three years ago. Same with robots. With the help of AI, they’re learning new skills faster than ever.
Picture this: What if a robot could help your grandma carry things Or what if robots worked in school dining halls, serving lunch for students This Gala performance wasn’t just for fun—it showed us everyday life in the future.
But don’t worry—robots aren’t taking over our world. Sure, those Gala robots looked perfect on TV, but the real world is messier and harder to deal with. That’s why “easy” tasks like opening a door are surprisingly difficult for robots. A robot that does kung fu on stage might get lost when facing your messy bedroom.
The robots were a window into your future. They can already move like humans. Soon, robots may do more than just help with housework. They could become your learning partner, your running mate, or even someone who remembers your favorite food and tells you a story at night. Maybe someday you’ll have a robot helper like that, or maybe you’ll design even smarter machines. After all, the students in school today are the ones who will create the amazing technology of tomorrow.

I am Lucy from Australia. Last term, my teacher asked me to join a group project about world cultures. There were four of us in the group. At first, we had a big problem. Everyone had different ideas, and we couldn’t agree on anything. I worried that we would never finish the project. I even wanted to give up halfway. But then we had a talk. We decided to listen to each other and share the work. I took notes, Mike drew pictures, Anna looked up information online, Tom put everything together and wrote the report. Slowly, our project started to look really good. On the school fair day, we showed our work to other classes. Many students came to see it. Our group got the highest score in class. I felt so proud that I told my parents right away. They gave me a big smile. I learned that when people work together and help each other, they can do great things. Now I enjoy team projects more than before.

Is AI a Good Helper in Our Life
Recently we had a class discussion on whether AI is a helper or a problem in our daily life. Students had different views.
Some students think AI is a great helper. It can explain math problems clearly and help us practice English anytime, making our study easier and more efficient. However, others hold the opposite opinion. They say AI makes us lazy, and we may gradually lose our problem-solving ability if we depend on it too much.
In my opinion, AI itself is not good or bad. We should use it properly to help us study, but never rely on it completely. Only in this way can we make AI a good helper for our growth.
