三、阅读理解

Do you still remember the good feelings you experienced when you did something good for someone else Perhaps it was the satisfaction of cleaning the garden for your neighbor, or the sense of happiness from working at a local community, or the gratification(满足)from donating to a good cause. Or perhaps it was the simple joy of having helped out a friend. One reason behind the good feelings is that it helps people get close to each other. Science shows that helping others can make you feel good. The key is to find the way that works for you.
Someone says “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap(打盹). If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, have a long trip with your friends. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”
For thousands of years, the greatest thinkers have suggested the same thing: Happiness is found in helping others. Scientific research shows a lot of examples to support the idea that helping others may be the secret to living a life that is happier, healthier, and more productive(有成效的)and meaningful.
Giving can feel great. And as we learn early, it’s better to give than to receive. The more you give, the more happiness you get. Follow these tips:
①Find your passion(热情). It’s not how much you give. It’s how much love you put into giving. You might care about one cause more than others, and that’s okay. Support the cause that feels right for you.
②Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. We don’t all have the same amount of money, but we all have time. We can give some of this time to help others—whether a few hours each day, or a few days each year.
③Give to groups with clear goals. Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, says that “If we tell the donors what we can do with their money and how their donations can help other people, they will get more happiness.”
④Be active. Set aside time to serve your community. Think about your choices, and find the cause and type of service that best match your values.

Usually, the bowl of rice is held with the left hand and brought close to the mouth while the rice is lifted into the mouth with the chopsticks, held in the right hand. One should not make any noise while eating the food. While waiting for the next dish, one should keep the chopsticks neat on the chopstick rest and avoid crossing them or putting them on the rice bowl.
Whenever attending a wedding ceremony, one should bring a present packed in colorful gift paper or give a red packet(红包). When invited to a Chinese New Year’s party, one should dress cheerfully and bring the hosts oranges and a New Year’s red packet for luck and good wishes.
When taking a drink of wine at a formal dinner, one must lift the wine first and toast(敬酒)another dinner guest. If one is asked to drink but he doesn’t wish it, he can simply touch his lips to the edge(边缘)of the glass to show the politeness.
The spoon should not be used at the same time as the chopsticks. Besides, toothpicks should not be used during the meal but rather at the end. Also, one should neither point at others with his chopsticks nor stick his chopsticks upright into his rice bowl. Both of them are considered very impolite.

In one community in Shanxi, a voluntary service team started last October nicknamed “Shared Children”, which works hard to support elderly empty nesters(空巢老人), is getting popular.
The 108 volunteers have already made a big difference within the Chaoyang community. They have paired off with 71 elderly people to learn about their daily needs and offer a helping hand.
In recent years, the community has come up with many ideas. At first, they started a project called “Knocking on the Door”, hoping that the elderly would connect with the leaders often. However, the community did not have enough staff to support so many elderly people. So, the idea of “shared children” came out.
“The Shared Children voluntary service allows kind people to join in public activities for the elderly people in their spare time,” says Guo, adding that not only did the local people join in with great love, but many staff members from supermarkets, banks and other working units also joined in.
By March, the number of the volunteers in the team had reached 108. Their work has also included buying things, providing spiritual comfort, helping to deal with health problems and other duties.
The volunteers are not all youngsters. Fan Fawen, a retired train driver, joined to support the volunteer team last year. He often helps to repair something in elderly people’s homes and buys them fruit and vegetables, as well as carrying heavy stuff, like rice bags, upstairs.
Liu Chunyan, 41, is also among the volunteers. “Many elderly people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should be there and chat with them more often.” Liu says.
“More people are now starting to learn about the team. We believe that more people will join us in the future,” says Hao Guoying, secretary of the community’s Party branch.

But those photos don’t usually end up in a photo album or on his bedroom walls. Timmy sells them and donates the money to help fight lung cancer.
When Timmy was five, he found out that his aunt Bella had lung cancer. He wanted to do something to help her. His first plan was to sell his photos from a vendor’s stand(小贩摊位)in front of his house.“My mum said it wouldn’t work because we were not on a busy street,” Timmy explains.
His next idea was to have an art show. Timmy decorated his home with candles, flowers and white lights. Then he arranged his photos. Timmy’s mum, Sara, remembers:“Everything was filled with photos, including our dining room table and the living room.” Timmy’s friends, family, and teachers came to the show. He raised more than $300 for cancer research that night. “Aunt Bella was very happy and excited,” Timmy says.
After a local newspaper wrote a story about Timmy’s photos, a volunteer offered to help him set up a website called “Camera for a Cure”. Teaching good manners can seem like a lot of work, but it is as important as brushing teeth twice a day. Actually, just give time and any child can learn to be polite. Here are some tips on how to help kids remember good manners in their daily life.
Sometimes children may be willing to listen to someone instead of their parents. Turn to friends, family, and teachers and encourage them to practice good manners at all times. This shows that a different person can be more effective(有效的)than the same one who is heard all the time. If no one plays down(对……轻描淡写)bad manners, your kids won’t either.
Prepare for different situations in which your kids need to behave politely. If you’re in your backyard where a child has been on the swings(秋千)too long, he doesn’t notice others waiting. Show how you would politely ask the child to give everyone else a turn. With practice, your child will have the confidence to deal with any situation with politeness and good manners.
Family dinners are perfect situations for practicing table manners, such as learning how to use utensils(餐具), eating properly, your child has a chance to experience and eat new foods in a safe environment. This will encourage him to be open and excited about new dishes and situations. If he doesn’t like the food, teach him how to refuse it without complaining about it. Advise him to eat his favourite food in small and slow bites with practice.
When my child used to point out someone’s bad manners, I would ask him what that person should have done differently. Talk about different situations, ask what words he can use to sound polite when talking to an adult. Ask your child to share his ideas with you. Encourage him to practice them as soon as possible and ask him to report what happens and if the result is good.
___1___ to Practice Good Manners
Get others to help Children may accept others’ advice more ___2___. A different person can do ___3___ work than the same one who is always heard.

Dear Mike,
How are you Glad to hear that you will study and live in China. Here are some table manners in China.
First, we usually use chopsticks to have meals. It’s polite to use serving chopsticks when you pick up food for others. You shouldn’t stick your chopsticks into a bowl of rice. Second, it’s important to wait for the elders and let them eat first. It shows our respect for the old. Third, you are not supposed to speak with your mouth full. Besides, it’s impolite to knock on your empty bowl with your chopsticks.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I hope these tips will help you.
Hope to see you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Dear Peter,
The summer vacation is coming soon, and our volunteer group will carry out some summer activities.
Firstly, we’ll do something for environmental protection. We’ll make posters to call on people to develop a green lifestyle in their daily lives such as saving water and power, taking their own cloth bags instead of using plastic bags. Secondly, we’ll help our disabled neighbours. We’ll try our best to help them solve some life problems. Also, we’ll organize donation activities for children in poor areas. We will donate some daily necessities and study supplies to them.
Helping others is also helping ourselves. Let’s work together to have a meaningful summer vacation.
Yours,
Li Ping
