A series of wildfires broke out in southern California, killing dozens of people. The clouds of smoke can even be seen from space.
People of many fire-prone(容易起火) areas as well as those far downwind have grown familiar with the thick, orange smoke. Such smoke can contain an unpredictable chemicals linked with heart and lung diseases and even cancer. Here’s what makes wildfire smoke so dangerous.
When organic matter like trees burns, it releases CO2, water, heat and, depending on the available fuel, various chemicals and particles(颗粒). Those tiny particles, which float in the air, can include metals, dust and more. If they’re smaller than 2.5 micrometres in diameter(直径), they can get through our body’s natural defenses when breathed in and go deep into the lungs, causing many health problems. Such particles, called PM2.5, is a common pollutant. It’s also created by motor vehicles and industrial plants. But the type present in wildfire smoke can be much more harmful to the human body.
When a fire breaks out in an urban area, it destroys homes, offices, cars and other facilities. In other words, more stuff is burned. Paints, metals and more can release many kinds of harmful chemicals. A 2023 study found that the quantity of harmful chemicals released during urban wildfires was more than 1,000 times larger than that in fires happening in woodland areas.
What’s worse, over time, the smoke is exposed to sunlight. The radiation(辐射) can cause a set of reactions that usually result in other pollutants. Then, as smoke containing these chemicals travels and settles over other cities, it can mix with even more local pollution. Research also suggests that those chemicals and particles, both possibly harmful, can combine to make their respective health risks even worse.
28. What is the main topic of the text
A.The causes of wildfires.
B.Climate change impact.

D.Health risks of wildfire smoke.
29. Why is PM2.5 from wildfire smoke dangerous

A.Urban fires affect more trees.
B.Urban fires burn less material.
C.Urban fires release more pollutants.
D.Urban fires produce less smoke.
31. What will probably happen when wildfire smoke is exposed to sunlight
A.It changes colour.
B.It forms other pollutants.
C.It quickly disappears.
D.It becomes harmless.

Increasing evidence suggests that sitting down too much can put our health at risk. According to the NHS, being inactive is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer, and early death. Therefore, the NHS advises people to “move more, sit less”. But how often and for how long should we get up and move
Now, researchers based at Columbia University, New York, have an answer: taking a five-minute walking break every half an hour can offset some of the harmful effects of sitting for long periods. The team had a group of 11 participants sit in ergonomic chairs for an eight-hour stretch, getting up only for bathroom breaks or their scheduled walk on a treadmill. The exercise periods tested were one minute of walking after every 30 minutes of sitting, one minute every 60 minutes, five minutes every 30 minutes, five minutes every 60 minutes, and no walking at all.
While sitting, the participants could use their phones or laptops, or read, and were given regular meals. Their blood pressure and blood sugar were checked regularly throughout the study.
The researchers found that any amount of walking reduced blood pressure by 4-5mmHg compared to sitting all day — a significant reduction, as ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
Additionally, walking for five minutes every 30 minutes reduced blood sugar spikes (猛增) after meals by more than 50 percent. Walking for one minute every 30 minutes also led to a small reduction in blood sugar spikes. Walking every 60 minutes, whether for one minute or five, had no effect.
“What we know now is that for optimal health, you need to move regularly at work, in addition to a daily exercise routine,” said Diaz. “While that may sound impractical, our findings show that even small amounts of walking spread through the workday can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses.”
32. Why is the NHS mentioned in the text
A.To suggest disease prevention methods.
B.To stress the seriousness of inactivity.
C.To compare international health data.
D.To explain its own research findings.
33. What were the participants required to do during the study
A.Stand up according to a fixed schedule.
B.Take breaks freely when needed.
C.Keep moving while sitting.
D.Avoid using phones or computers.
34. Which walking pattern best controlled blood sugar after meals
A.Walking for one minute every 60 minutes.
B.Walking for five minutes every 60 minutes.
C.Walking for one minute every 30 minutes.
D.Walking for five minutes every 30 minutes.
35. What does Diaz’s statement imply
A.Long workouts prevent chronic diseases.
B.Daily exercise forms the basis of good health.
C.Movement during work is vital for health.
D.Prolonged sitting is unavoidably harmful.

My family always had various animals around. To my great annoyance, I never had one that truly belonged to me. I couldn’t count how many times that I begged them for buying or adopting one for me. My parents, ultimately, compromised and permitted me to keep my own until I was nine years old.
The day that I had longed for finally arrived. So thrilled was I that an increasing sense of excitement stuffed my heart. Knowing my parents brought a fish back home, which I would like to call it Mark, I offered to undertake the responsibility to look after it without hesitation.
Every Saturday, it’s a routine to clean out his bowl. Cleaning which seemed impossible for me to shoulder, turned into something that I was desperate for and enjoyed. I found myself unconsciously turning down invitations from my friends to go somewhere immediately after school, because what I was concerned was to dash home to feed my fish first. Every day he would remind me that I was needed and that I had someone relying on me. Whenever I looked at him and appreciated his swimming freely, my heart was filled with joy and enjoyment.
One day, I came home from school and headed to my room to feed Mark. I found a terrible thing had happened without any sign. I dropped my bag and ran over to the bowl. I held my breath, not daring make a sound. Panic took hold of me. I saw my best friend Mark floating around, lifeless. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, rooted to the spot.
At the very moment, my mom walked into my room.
