Heavy rain has recently hit many parts of southern China. Provinces such as Guangdong, Guangxi and Guizhou have started emergency actions after days of strong rainfall. Experts have warned that the continuous rain may lead to floods, landslides and waterlogging in cities.
To deal with these weather risks, China is using more modern technology in flood control and disaster prevention. According to Chinese officials, different monitoring systems are now working together. These systems use satellites in space, weather radar and computer programs to help improve weather reports and give earlier warnings.
Also, local governments are making every effort to ensure that warning messages can reach villages, families and workplaces in time. In many places, computer systems are used to monitor lakes and rivers. As a result, workers can check rainfall, water levels and important machines more easily than before.
AI is becoming another useful tool. In January, scientists from a university in Hong Kong made a new AI weather reporting system. This system can predict heavy rain and storms up to four hours earlier. It can also improve weather reports’ accuracy (精准度) by more than 15% during testing.
As bad weather becomes more common, China is increasingly turning to AI, satellite technology and real-time monitoring systems to improve disaster prevention and reduce risks. Officials say the goal is not only to respond faster, but also to better protect lives and infrastructure (基础设施) before disasters happen.

Last weekend, a friend and I went to visit an art museum. We found many works of traditional Chinese calligraphy (书法) on show and felt really excited. Although I don’t know much about calligraphy, I can see it everywhere in China. It is in ads, on posters, and on buildings. Many homes have it on their walls or front doors. You may even see people writing calligraphy with water and a big brush on the ground. I came to learn that calligraphy is viewed by Chinese people as one of the highest forms of art.
In the museum, my friend told me an interesting story about calligraphy. Wang Xizhi (303-361) was one of the best calligraphers in history. He once attended a party at the Orchid Pavilion in the mountains. Every guest wrote a poem during the party, and then Wang wrote an introduction for them. The next day, Wang looked at his calligraphy the Lanting Xu (Introduction to the poems written at the Orchid Pavilion) and realized that it was his best calligraphy ever. He then tried to recreate the exact style of calligraphy, but he found it impossible to do so. When he was at the party, he was very happy and relaxed. This made his calligraphy especially lively. People later said that the calligraphy in the Lanting Xu looked like a Chinese dragon at play.
It is a pity that the original version (真迹) of the Lanting Xu has been lost, but it was copied and studied by many calligraphers. In fact, many students today still copy the Lanting Xu, along with other famous works in history. Doing so not only helps them to improve their own handwriting but also develops their artistic sense.
After visiting the art museum, I began to see that Chinese calligraphy is more than just writing. It is also a way to express feelings and show the beauty of Chinese culture.
23. How does the writer show calligraphy is everywhere in China
A. By using numbers. B. By asking questions. C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons.
24. What does the underlined word “them” in Para. 2 refer to (指代)
A. The guests. B. The poems. C. The parties. D. The dragons.
25. Why do students still learn calligraphy today according to Para. 3
A. To become famous calligraphers and win praise.
B. To kill time and have a good rest after a busy day.
C. To copy the lost original version and make money.
D. To improve handwriting and develop artistic sense.
26. What is the best title for the text
A. A Visit to an Art Museum with a Friend.
B. How to Express Feelings in a Proper Way.
C. Chinese Calligraphy: More Than Just Writing.
D. The Story of Wang Xizhi and His Lanting Xu.

①Scientists in Australia are trying to save a bird called the regent honeyeater. They hope to help the endangered birds survive in a new way: teaching the young ones how to sing.
②Regent honeyeaters are black and yellow birds found in southeastern Australia. They once had large numbers, but now they’re in danger of dying out because many forests have been cut down. Scientists think there are only about 250 regent honeyeaters in the wild.
③As their numbers have dropped, young male birds in the wild haven’t learned the song that male honeyeaters have always sung. That’s a problem, since male regent honeyeaters use this song to find mates. Some young birds sang very simple songs, while others even copied the songs of other birds.
④To help regent honeyeaters, some zoos in Australia began raising them. The goal was to release the birds later instead of keeping them in zoos forever. However, the young birds in the zoos couldn’t learn the right song by themselves.
⑤At the start, the scientists tried playing tapes of the song for the young birds. That had no effect on the songs that the young birds made. Then, the scientists used older birds from the wild as teachers. They put each of these birds into an area with several younger birds. After about three months, the younger birds began to sing the correct song. As the program continued, over half of the male honeyeaters in the zoos learned to sing the correct song. The zoos returned some of these birds to the wild, and the researchers watched carefully to see how the young birds did.
⑥They hope that as they send back more and more honeyeaters who know the right song into the wild, their numbers will grow. Having the birds singing the same song will make it easier for regent honeyeaters to find each other and raise more chicks.
27. Why couldn’t young regent honeyeaters sing the right song
A. Because they were raised in zoos.
B. Because older birds refused to teach them.
C. Because there were too few older birds left.
D. Because they liked copying other birds’ songs.
28. What does the underlined word “release” in the Para. 4 probably mean
A. To set somebody free. B. To make somebody happy.
C. To keep somebody clean. D. To shake somebody awake.
29. What is the right order of the activities to save the birds
① Scientists used older birds as teachers. ② Zoos started to raise young male birds.
③ Scientists played tapes for young birds. ④ Researchers watched birds in the wild.
A. ③-④-②-① B. ②-③-①-④ C. ③-①-②-④ D. ②-④-③-①
30. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To compare regent honeyeaters with other birds.
B. To explain why regent honeyeaters are in danger.
C. To describe the living habits of regent honeyeaters.
D. To introduce a new way to save regent honeyeaters.
