Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, is famous for its lively summer festival and beautiful old buildings — but a short break here offers plenty more besides. This walkable city packs unforgettable experiences into a single day, from literary walks to fine dining and historic pubs.
8 a.m.: Explore the old town
Start your own literary walk in the Grassmarket. Climb the Miss Jean Brodie Steps to view Edinburgh Castle surrounded by narrow lanes, and then walk into Greyfriars Kirkyard, a 17th-century cemetery. Sharp-eyed Harry Potter fans will notice familiar names on the tombstones, including ones that inspired the author’s You-Know-Who.
11 a.m.: Step into the past
Across from the cemetery is the National Museum of Scotland. Its galleries cover different times and places around the world, with a focus on Scottish history and culture. Don’t miss Alexander Graham Bell’s original telephone and a TARDIS prop and screenplay signed by actor Ewan McGregor. For a different experience, visit Surgeons’ Hall, which shows Edinburgh’s medical history.
2 p.m.: Head for the river
After morning culture, take a short cable car from Princes Street to Leith. This area has many top-quality restaurants, including Tom Kitchin’s The Kitchin. Its lunch menu features fresh Scottish food for the season, such as the lobster from just three bus stops down the coast, which tastes all the better for it. Little wonder he himself often eats here.
7 p.m.: Drink up
No Edinburgh day is complete without a pub stop, and the New Town has great choices. Sherlock Holmes fans should look for The Conan Doyle, a historic pub near the author’s birthplace. Step inside and enjoy a cool local beer or whisky to relax after a busy day of exploring.

Like many young people, Chen Zhen, a young inheritor of straw weaving (草编), once worked in a city, far from her hometown’s traditions. However, during a visit back home, she was deeply moved by the beauty of straw weaving and concerned about its fading future. Driven by a sense of duty, she made a courageous decision: to leave her office job and devote herself to this ancient art.
True to the “Craftsman (工匠) Spirit”, straw weaving is not a task to be rushed. It begins with the careful selection of materials and continues through the creation of complex designs, where mental focus and physical control become essential.

Carnival season is at its height this weekend. New Orleans’s annual series of parades began more than a week ago. Thousands attend the parades and they leave a mess of trash behind. Despite a busy daily cleanup operation that leaves the post-parade landscape remarkably clean, uncaught beads (珠子) hang from tree branches or get ground into the mud under the feet of passers-by. They also flow into storm drains, and finally these non-biodegradable plastics (不可降解塑料) flow into Lake Pontchartrain, polluting the water and threatening local wildlife.
“The plastics disaster is becoming a defining characteristic of this event,” said Brett Davis, a New Orleans native who grew up catching beads at Mardi Gras parades. He now heads Bead Reborn NOLA — a nonprofit organization that works to reduce the waste. One way to use less new plastic beads is to use old ones again. Parade-goers can now donate their caught beads to the organization and it repackages and resells the products to raise money for the services it provides to adults and children with disabilities. The city has also placed collection stations along parade routes to encourage recycling.
Aside from recycling, there’s a small but growing movement to find something to replace plastic beads, such as beads made from paper, recycled glass, or even seeds; headbands made from old T-shirts; and small packages of local food products. These options are gaining attention as ways to keep the fun while mitigating the harm caused by waste.
However, changing a long-standing tradition is not easy. Plastic beads remain widely used because they are cheap and popular. Still, Brett Davis believes that with growing awareness, Carnival season can become greener.

B.The successful daily cleanup after each parade.

According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels (太阳能板) installed has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment (InSPIRE) project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators (传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide (杀虫剂) use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities-and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
32. What is the problem mentioned in paragraph 2
A.The decline in the demand for solar energy.
B.The negative impact of installing solar panels.
C.The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
D.The most recent advances in solar technology.
33. What does InSPIRE aim to do
A.Help local farms produce more food.
B.Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C.Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
D.Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
34. What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To protect pollinator insects.
B.To ensure the supply of energy.
C.To limit the development of solar energy.
D.To develop different kinds of local economy.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay
B.Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C.InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture
D.Solar Farms: A New Development Path

How to Practice Virtues in the Digital Age
In the digital age, we spend more and more time online, and moral choices are everywhere in our daily life — whether it’s chatting online, doing homework or shopping on social media. It’s important for us, especially teenagers, to know how to practice virtues like honesty, kindness and responsibility in the digital age. ___36___
___37___ Honesty is the basic virtue of being a person. When we do online homework or take online exams, we should never copy others’ answers or use search engines to cheat. When we communicate with others online, we should tell the truth and not spread rumors or fake news. Even if no one is watching us online, we should keep the bottom line of honesty.
Kindness is another important virtue we need to practice. ___38___ When we see others being cyberbullied online, we should not stand by and watch, but try to help them in a proper way. When our friends are in trouble and ask for help online, we should give them sincere advice instead of making fun of them. Small acts of kindness online can warm people’s hearts just like those in real life.
We also need to keep a sense of responsibility in the digital world. ___39___ We should be responsible for our own words and actions — don’t post harmful or inappropriate content online, and don’t comment on others randomly. We should also be responsible for the network environment — if we see fake news or harmful information, we can report it to the relevant platform in time.
Virtue is not a word that is far away from us, but it is reflected in every small choice we make. ___40___ As long as we keep honesty, kindness and responsibility in our hearts, we can practice virtues anytime and anywhere, whether in real life or in the digital world, and become a virtuous person.
A.Honesty is the first step to practice virtues online.
B.Here are some practical suggestions for us to follow.
C.We should use the internet to help others instead of hurting them.
D.It doesn’t matter whether we practice virtues in real life or online.
E.A virtuous person is loved and respected by everyone around him.
F.We can make more friends online by chatting with them every day.
G.Responsibility is the guarantee of building a good network environment.

As the old saying goes, “Friends are like liquor (酒): the older, the better.” Many people consider old friends to be more important than new ones. For example, if two pieces of advice ___61___ (give) to solve a problem, one from a new friend and the other from ___62___ old friend, people will prefer the latter one ___63___ (base) on the long-term trust rather than the former one, even though the new friend’s advice may be better.
I, however, disagree with the old saying, ___64___ (believe) that new friends are not ___65___ (necessary) worse than old friends. It is not always right ___66___ (determine) your friendship by the length of time.
Once you call someone a friend, he or she must be a person ___67___ is reliable and whose interests are in common with ___68___ (you). It is mainly his or her character and interests that make him or her your friend. It actually has little to do with time. People’s appearance may change, but their character usually ___69___ (remain) the same. Therefore, on this point, there are no ___70___ (difference) between old friends and new friends.

Every culture has a specific way of eating. North Americans and Europeans use forks, knives and spoons. In Asia, chopsticks are the top choice.
You might think it’s easy to use chopsticks, but actually it’s not as simple as it first appears. I learned this lesson a couple of years ago.
I had applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. My new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job. He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. I was nervous. I knew we would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique (技巧). I had failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression Would they laugh at me Would I make a complete fool of myself
I went home that evening and cooked some rice and chicken. I put the food on my plate, and I spent the next hour attempting to learn how to use chopsticks. Try as I might, I could not hold the food with my chopsticks. I didn’t get much sleep that evening. I tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed, worrying about the coming lunch.
The next day, I could hardly contain my anxiety and headed to the restaurant. We were seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the waiter in Mandarin. My heart was beating wildly, but then I noticed a strange thing. Instead of the customary chopsticks, each of us had knives, forks and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with the chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment, so he had called ahead and arranged for us to be served with knives and forks. I couldn’t believe how thoughtful he was.
Immediately, I made up my mind to take this opportunity to learn how to use chopsticks.
