Every country across the world has its own special customs for celebrating special days such as birthdays. Let’s take a look at some cool birthday traditions from around the world.
Pull ears in Spain
As well as cakes, singing and presents, birthdays in Spain come with a fun custom: ear pulling. This tradition is known as “los tirones de oreja”. The birthday person gets their earlobe (耳垂) softly pulled once for each year of their age. Though we’re not sure where this strange habit started, some believe that since ears are one part of the body that never stops growing, pulling ears may mean a longer life.
Enjoy fairy bread in Australia.
There are so many foods that are served at birthday parties in Australia. These are typically simple, sweet treats. The most popular of all is one called “fairy bread”. It’s a kind of white bread, with thick butter on it, and it is covered with sprinkles (着色珠子糖). These sprinkles are really pretty and make the bread look magical, and that’s why it’s called “fairy bread”.
Show your love through cake in Brazil
In Brazil, it’s a tradition to share the first slice (块) of your birthday cake with the person you love the most. This might be a parent, cousin, or grandparent. Some families break it down even more with specific (特有的) traditions and honors special to them.

Have you ever blown bubbles (泡泡) in a park on a sunny day If so, you might have noticed that those little bubbles can show rainbow (彩虹) colors. So, how does that happen To understand, let’s look closer at what bubbles are made of.
Bubbles look like tiny balloons filled with air. They are made of thin layers (层) of soap and water. A lot like sandwiches. The outer and inner layers of bubbles are soap, and the middle layer is water.
When light waves (波) hit bubbles, some are reflected to our eyes from the outer surface of the bubbles, and some are reflected to our eyes from the inner surface. Since the inner surface is a little farther away, the light waves from the outer and inner surfaces can mix.
This mixing is what creates the colors in bubbles. Sometimes, the light waves add together and make some colors brighter. Other times, the light waves cancel out each other and make some colors vanish. The result is a beautiful show of colors, just like a rainbow!
The colors you see in bubbles depend on the thickness of the soap and water layers. Each color matches a certain thickness. As bubbles move around and change shape, the thickness of their soap and water layers change too, which causes them to show different colors. That’s why bubbles can look like they’re changing colors as they dance in the air!
28. Which of the following shows the layers of a bubble
A. B. C.
29. What may happen to light waves when they hit a bubble
①They stay inside the bubble.
②They mix outside the bubble.
③They get reflected from the outer surface of the bubble.
④They get reflected from the inner surface of the bubble.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④
30. What does the underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Disappear. B. Increase. C. Continue.
31. Which of the following questions can the last paragraph explain
A. Where do light waves spread
B. Why can the colors in bubbles change

Tutouwan is one of the most famous dishes in Hengyang, Hunan Province. In 1979, it was added to the “Chinese Cookbook”.
Tutouwan is believed to have over 100 years of history. It started with General Peng Yulin from Hengyang during the Qing Dynasty. Here is an interesting story behind the dish.
One day, Peng Yulin invited some important guests for dinner. But he didn’t know what special dishes to serve them. He asked his family cook for ideas. The cook suggested making a dish by layering (把……分层堆放) different kinds of snacks from the bottom to the top in just one bowl. The snacks included fish balls, sweet potato balls, red dates (枣) and egg strips (蛋条). The seven layers formed a tower shape. In this way, the dish would look nice and mean having a successful career (事业). Peng Yulin liked the idea and told the cook to make it.
When the dish was served, the guests praised it and asked for its name. Peng Yulin asked the cook to answer. The cook quickly named it Duizi Xiangyao because a lot of snacks were piled (堆) together to form the dish. But the guests thought it wasn’t a good name. One guest suggested calling it Baota Xiangyao because these snacks were piled like a tower in shape. Another guest said, “This dish was created by General Peng Yulin. It would be better to call it Yulin Xiangyao.” In the end, it was named Yulin Xiangyao, which later became known as Tutouwan.
Nowadays, Tutouwan is not only a delicious dish but also carries the cultural feelings of the people in Hengyang. Local people usually serve it at festivals. It means progress, wealth, happiness and good luck.
