In Yangquan today, there are more than 3,000 people learning paper cutting, a traditional folk (民俗的) art in China. They come to learn it for many reasons. Some hope to become folk artists. Others come to learn skills that will help them open their own shops in the future. A few are sent by their parents to learn patience and creativity.
“Attracting new young learners to traditional paper cutting has become a problem,” says Wang Aihua, who teaches it at a small folk art school in Yangquan. Wang fears that this ancient art will soon disappear. “It’s hard to persuade (说服) young people to spend years practicing it, because the process of learning paper cutting is not easy or fashionable,” she says.
Wang’s students have to practice cutting paper for hours every day, and they must be careful with every cut to avoid mistakes. To learn paper cutting well, they must have a patient heart and learn to enjoy the beauty of traditional art as well.
For old traditions to live on, the young must learn and pass them down. Teenagers often have peer pressure in daily life. Positive peer pressure can push you to become better—for example, your friends may encourage you to study harder, take part in sports activities, or help others. Even when you meet negative peer pressure, you can learn valuable lessons from it. When you refuse to do something wrong that your peers ask for, you practice sticking to your own principles (准则), and this helps you build self-confidence and make wise decisions in the future.
It’s very common that sometimes you and your peers won’t see eye to eye. “Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’ when you don’t agree with what your peers are doing,” advises Dr. Lee, an expert on teenage mental health. “Take a moment to think about whether the thing is right for you, and communicate your feelings honestly. You can say, ‘I don’t want to do this because it will affect (影响) my study.’ If you feel stressed, turn to your parents, teachers or other trusted adults for help.”
Every teenager’s experience with peer pressure is different. What if you don’t know how to deal with it on your own That doesn’t mean you have to struggle (斗争) alone. There are practical and easy ways to help teenagers deal with peer pressure properly and grow up healthily.

Dear friends, today I finished my work as a school gatekeeper. Thirty years have passed quickly, and they are the most precious (珍贵的) years of my life. Every day I stood at the school gate, greeting the students and keeping them safe, which I will never forget.
I can still remember my first day on this job. I was a little nervous, not knowing how to get along with the kids. A little girl walked up to me, handed me a small drawing, and said, “Uncle, you look kind.” That sweet gift and warm words gave me courage to do my job well.
Over the years, I have seen many touching moments. Every morning, the students would wave and say “Good morning” to me. When it rained, I lent my umbrella to those who forgot theirs.
