One day, when I was going to check in at an airport, I noticed there was a big problem. The counter person was telling everyone that all the planes were having problems and they would not be able to fly! And it was suggested that a bus would be provided to take us to Seattle. Everyone was worried, as we only had an hour and a half to make the connecting flight, and the bus was not even at the airport yet.
Finally, the bus pulled up, and the driver said, “They just pulled me out of bed after an all-night shift (夜班), and they expect me to get you to Seattle in time to catch your flight. Good luck!”
Needless to say, everyone was in a really bad mood. I was loading my baggage into the bus and had hung my banjo (班卓琴)over my back when the bus driver said, “What Are you going to play that on my bus ” “Well, really did not plan on it,” I replied. “I was only kidding,” said the driver. But I started thinking about it, and I pulled out the banjo. A worried, angry woman said, “Well, what if I don’t like it ” “Then tell me and I’ll stop,” I replied.
We drove off, and the tension (紧张) made the atmosphere inside the bus horrendous! Then I started performing the old standard Blue Skies. In a few minutes, I noticed everyone was singing along. I started to sing, too, and before long, the whole bus burst into song.
One song led to another. Everyone laughed and sang, with food passed around the bus, and before long, the airport was in sight. The bus driver called, “We made it! We would never have done it without the help of our banjo player.” Shouts of approval (同意) rang through the bus. People exchanged addresses and invitations to visit, and a few exchanged hugs.
A few weeks later, my mailbox was filled with letters from my new friends. Their letters reminded me of how, by reaching out with just a song or a bit of friendship, you can turn a very tense situation into a peaceful experience — a magical, musical bus ride.

According to researchers, there are three kinds of smiles: sincere, false, and painful. How can we distinguish them In experiments, people are good at telling fake and spontaneous (自发的) smiles in photos apart. But in the real world, most people are less able to distinguish between them. They are distracted (使分心) by other elements of communication such as speech, hand gestures, and other body movements. However, if they were to focus only on the face, they would probably know whether a smile was sincere or not.
This is because two muscles are involved in spontaneous smiling. The first muscle is a ring-like band of muscle around each eye. When it contracts, it causes what we know as“smiling eyes”. The other muscle extends from the top of the cheekbone to the corners of the mouth. It moves the mouth upwards when we smile. This muscle on its own produces what we call the“mouth smile”. When people sincerely smile, the corners of the mouth move up and the muscles around the eyes also contract. It is these muscles that show that a smile is sincere.
Smiles can mean very different things in different countries. In the USA, for example, a smile is a friendly, positive gesture of trust. In contrast, in some Asian societies, people smile when they are happy, of course, but also when they feel anger, sadness, confusion, or embarrassment, perhaps to mask (掩饰) their true feelings.
Besides cultural, some people tend to smile more than others and that seems to show they are cheerful, optimistic types. But that relationship isn’t strictly true. Some people rarely smile and are quite happy. Others often have a smile on their face when they are actually feeling anxious. Human communication is full of uncertainties and we sometimes have a difficult time understanding each other, but a sincere, heartfelt smile can never be misunderstood.
12. What did the experiments show
A.Most people fail to identify fake smiles in reality often.
B.Speech and gestures help people identify sincere smiles quickly.
C.Fake smiles are easier to spot than spontaneous smiles in photos.
D.People are better at telling fake smiles apart in controlled settings.
13. Which of the following is a key feature of a sincere smile
A.Only the muscles around the mouth contract.
B.The corners of the mouth move downward.
C.The smile appears only in positive situations.
D.Both the mouth and eye muscles are involved.
14. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To compare cultural differences in smiling.
B.To promote the importance of smiling in communication.
C.To criticize people’s inability to recognize fake smiles.
D.To explain how to identify sincere smiles and their complexity.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Smiling can clear up misunderstandings.
B.Smiling is not directly related to personality.
C.People rarely smiling are hard to get on with.
D.Uncertain smiles cannot lead to close relationships.

When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—Labor Day (May Day). “Enjoy your extra day off, ” said the teacher to her class. An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When she got off the school bus, Kayla ran into the house happily.
“How was school, Kayla ” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday. ”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh ” asked Kayla’s mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours. Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in celebration of Labor Day, the family would do some labour work. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday! A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on, ” said Kayla’s mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today Isn’t Labor Day a holiday ”
“Yes, Kayla. It is, ” replied her dad. “But we thought working hard today would make you understand why Labor Day was observed initially. “Though feeling disappointed and even a little annoyed, Kayla had no choice.
She was assigned to tidy and clean her own room.
