From a young age, I had difficulty with math. Words and stories were easy for me, but numbers seemed like a different language. My father patiently used pencils to show me problems. However, my mind always focused on the stories behind the numbers. Although he tried to help, he sometimes became frustrated. His critical words about my math skills slowly made me anxious and less confident.
In school, my problems increased. A geometry (几何) teacher’s sharp words and my low grades seemed to prove my fears were true. My mother found a tutor, a college student. Even his clear explanations left my mind soon after he was gone. What stayed was a strong fear of math, a feeling many people now call “math anxiety”.
Yet life continued. I got married, raised three sons, and had a teaching career. When I chose to work for a doctoral degree in education, I knew I would need statistics. This time, however, I dealt with it differently. I was not that unsure young girl anymore. I asked for help, joined weekend study groups, and did not let my old fears control me. When the professor asked if I had questions, I smiled and said yes — without feeling shy.
Looking back, I understand the strongest limits were never really mine; they were the echoes (回响) of other people’s doubts that I had let grow inside me. I did not become a medical doctor, but I earned a doctorate in a field I love. I managed to be a mother, a teacher, and a graduate student at the same time. This was not because I was naturally excellent at everything, but because I learned to believe in my own ability to learn and improve.
Now that I am older, I see that every challenge helped form who I am. If I could talk to my younger self, I would kindly tell her to trust her own voice earlier. Yet I regret nothing — every step, even the hard ones, led me to a life full of deep satisfaction and happiness.
4. Why did the author feel “math anxiety”
A.Numbers sound like a different language.
B.Stories distracted her easily.
C.The tutor left her forgetful.
D.Adults’ comments made her doubt herself.
5. What does “without feeling shy” imply
A.She gathered statistics.
B.She sought help actively.

D.She understood the questions.
6. What helped the author succeed in multiple roles
A.Natural talent.
B.An easier career path.
C.Self-belief in learning.
D.Complete independence.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards her past struggles now
A.Grateful.
B.Regretful.
C.Worried.
D.Excited.

Inspired by the thunderous footsteps of the huge dinosaur in Jurassic Park, a German startup called IMENSUS has designed a rover (探测车) that could change the way we explore the Moon. The rover generates seismic (地震的) waves that travel deep into the ground, creating artificial quakes to map what lies beneath. “We’re shaking the ground,” said David Frey, head of engineering.
On Earth, this technology helps mining companies locate valuable materials such as copper and gold. Seismic waves slow down when passing through dense, mineral-rich rocks. By measuring wave speeds with surface sensors, prospectors can identify underground resources without digging. But Frey believes the real potential lies beyond our planet. As space agencies set their sights on the Moon, accessing local resources — such as ice at the lunar South Pole and regolith (月壤) for construction — will be essential. “Everyone’s just thinking, ‘Let’s go, dig, and use the material.’ But there might be a huge rock underneath. You want to know this before you go, because it’s super expensive,” Frey explained.
Unlike past scientific missions that relied on unpredictable natural moonquakes, this method would let the rover generate controlled seismic events on demand. Lunar seismologist Dr. Nicholas Schmerr from the University of Maryland noted that such seismic sounding can effectively locate structures within the top kilometer of the subsurface, including lava tubes or buried ices.
However, Schmerr also warned that extreme temperatures, solar radiation, and sharp, rough regolith on the Moon could easily destroy machinery. While IMENSUS’s Earth-based pilot phase is set to begin in 2027, applying the same technology on the Moon will require careful engineering to ensure survival in such harsh conditions.
Still, both experts agree that seismic exploration will be vital for future lunar missions. Whether IMENSUS’s concept reaches the Moon depends on the progress of programs like NASA’s Artemis. But as Frey sees it, the same technology could one day be used on Mars or even asteroids. One thing is certain: if humans are to build a lasting presence beyond Earth, we must first understand what lies beneath the surface.
8. How does the seismic technology find the underground mines
A.By creating artificial earth quakes.
B.By helping to search for mines.
C.By surveying underground wave speeds.
D.By identifying resources without digging.
9. What is the advantage of the new seismic method
A.It helps to avoid huge rocks beneath.
B.It works like natural moon quakes.
C.It creates moon quakes as needed.
D.It locates subsurface structures.
10. What does the underlined word “harsh” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Severe.
B.Silent.
C.Freezing.
D.Flat.
11. What is the text mainly about
A.Seismic waves on the Moon.
B.A new way to explore the Moon.
C.Challenges of living on the Moon.
D.Building an operational lunar base.

Exhaust gases (废气) from home fireplaces and industrial facilities release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air. Scientists have developed a new type of electrode designed to address this problem by capturing (捕捉) CO2 directly from the air and turning it into a useful chemical called formic acid.
Pulling carbon dioxide out of the air may seem straightforward, especially since plants do it naturally. A great problem lies in transforming that caught gas into something useful. In real industrial exhaust, CO2 is usually mixed with other gases, including nitrogen (氮气) and oxygen. Most existing conversion (转化) systems only work efficiently when carbon dioxide has already been separated and concentrated, which limits their practicality.
To overcome this obstacle, scientists set out to build a system that could operate under realistic conditions. The research team designed an electrode that allows gas to pass through it, trap carbon dioxide, and convert it at the same time. The device is made up of three layers, one of which captures CO2. Together, these components enable the direct conversion of carbon dioxide gas into formic acid.
Formic acid is an important chemical used in a range of applications, including fuel cells and other industrial processes. Producing it directly from exhaust gases could make carbon reuse more practical and cost effective. When tested with pure CO2 gas, the new electrode showed about 40% higher efficiency than existing carbon conversion electrodes. The advantage became even clearer when researchers used a gas containing 15% CO2, 8% oxygen gas, and 77% nitrogen gas.
The electrode also proved capable of capturing carbon dioxide at concentrations similar to those found in the atmosphere, showing that it can function in normal air. According to the researchers, this approach offers a promising path towards integrating carbon capture into real industrial applications. They also suggest that similar designs could eventually be adapted to capture and convert other greenhouse gases.
12. Why are the existing conversion systems impractical
A.They are hard to transform CO2 into useful things.
B.They need CO2 separated and concentrated first.
C.They are hard to trap and transform CO2 respectively.
D.They need CO2 mixed with other exhaust gases.
13. How differently does the new system work
A.It captures CO2 directly from the gas.
B.It allows CO2 to pass through and convert.
C.It traps CO2 in the three layers.
D.It transforms CO2 into formic acid.
14. What can we know about the new technology from last paragraph
A.It requires stronger policy backing.
B.It constitutes an early-stage solution.
C.It demands new industrial standards.
D.It offers an achievable industrial way.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Who Holds the Key to CO2 Conversion
B.Why Handling CO2 Remains a Challenge
C.What if We Could Turn CO2 into Wealth
D.Where the Captured CO2 Ultimately Goes

New discoveries and technological breakthroughs are made every year. Yet, as the agricultural sector moves forward, many people in society are looking back to their roots in terms of the food they eat. A “locavore” movement has emerged in the United States, encouraging people to eat foods grown locally and sustainably. 16. _______
The United States’ agricultural output is among the highest in the world. Farms here are tremendously productive, thanks to advanced technology and massive inputs. 17. _______. Professor Timothy Beach points out that this food system heavily depends on fossil fuels — both for machinery and fertilizer production. As global petrol reserves reduce, such dependence is turning into a growing threat to agricultural stability.
Despite these challenges, the move toward sustainability is growing stronger. Farmers like Louise Keckler run small farms that supply fresh produce through community-supported agriculture networks. 18. _______. This freshness not only improves nutrition but also helps consumers understand how climate change affects food systems. This personal connection fosters greater environmental awareness.
Some experts also question whether the “locavore” movement is just a passing craze. 19. _______. Professor Beach admits uncertainty but believes fully sustainable agriculture could still feed the nation. Professor Erin Barnett, however, calls it a lasting trend — a return to a more natural way of eating that aligns with human needs.
20. _______. Urban residents are now growing tomatoes on balconies or herbs in window boxes. As Kirk Wilbur, a former urban farming advocate, notes, “No matter how small a space you have, you still have enough room to grow some food.” Local eating is no longer limited to rural areas — it’s becoming a lifestyle accessible to all.
A.In fact, the movement is expanding into cities
B.They can inspire more responsible consumption habits
C.However, this productivity comes at a high environmental cost
D.It shortens supply chains and strengthens producer-consumer ties
E.Many believe that global trade ensures food security better than local systems
F.Whether temporary or not, they agree it’s made supermarkets rethink sourcing
G.Through this model, households get food harvested only hours before delivery

On a cold, damp evening in mid-November, a sharp wind cut through the streets, but Jack paid little attention to the chill. As a delivery rider, he had just finished a few smooth orders, his hands warm from the hot milk tea cups he’d been carrying, and his spirits fairly good. Stepping out of a milk tea shop, he found the spot where his second-hand electric bike had been parked now empty. In an instant, his heart sank, and a wave of hopelessness swept over him, turning his calm evening into a nightmare. That bike was far more than just a vehicle; it was his lifeline, the only way for him to earn daily income and cover his living expenses.
Panic set in as he remembered the undelivered orders — especially a cup of hot milk tea for Ms. White, a regular customer. His hand trembled as he pressed the voice button, his words laced with sorrow and anxiety as he apologized repeatedly, offering to pay for the undelivered drink. To his great surprise, Ms. White did not respond with anger or complaint, but with gentle kindness. Ms. White told him not to worry and to take his time finding his bike.
Her understanding words calmed him, but also deepened his sense of responsibility. “She is so kind. I cannot let her down,” he thought. For nearly two hours, he searched every nearby street, but there was no sign of his bike. As night grew darker and the wind bit harder, Jack clenched his fists and made a firm decision. He took out his poor savings, bought a bag of fresh apples and a new cup of hot milk tea, then set off on foot to Ms. White’s apartment, several kilometers away. The wind bit into his thin jacket, and his old shoes grew heavy with mud, but the thought of keeping his promise and maintaining his integrity kept him moving forward through the dimly lit urban landscape.

Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a businessman for a life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut (小屋) in Uganda, East Africa.
Pedley admitted that he had not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. “I had always put the pursuit of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting,” says Pedley.
But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. “I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing were thanking me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them,” he said. Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. There he will help run an organisation that hopes to improve the quality of life for people in the village of Kigazi. He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.
Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a “camp” in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents to poverty or disease. Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.
4. Which of the following best describes Pedley in the past
A.Optimistic.
B.Selfless.
C.Unsympathetic.
D.Independent.
5. What will Pedley do in the small Ugandan village
A.Help build community facilities.
B.Do business with the local people.
C.Help farmers increase potato output.
D.Introduce tools to improve English teaching.
6. Why will Pedley work with English teenagers in trouble
A.To inspire them to live a more positive life.
B.To encourage them to make friends with locals.
C.To make them learn about different cultures.
D.To train them to become doctors in the future.
7. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Jon Pedley sold his farmhouse and car to start a business in Uganda.
B.The people in Kigazi live a poor life and need clean water and hospitals.
C.Nowadays English teenagers are sent abroad in order to change their lives.
D.A former businessman gave up his comfortable life to help others in Africa.
C
There’s an inner desire amongst most people to explore our planet. There’s this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we’ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.
There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking: “How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my posts on Facebook or Instagram ”
But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times by 2050.
I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people’s awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behavior as tourists. However, I can’t share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behavior. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.
I’m old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.
8. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author
A.They don’t care about our planet at all.
B.They post too many photos on social media.
C.They can hardly find the right place to explore.
D.They fail to have a meaningful traveling experience.
9. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Improved.
B.Damaged.
C.Saved.
D.Shaped.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A.Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.
B.Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behavior.
C.Tourists’ environmental awareness has been increased.
D.Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.
11. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive
A.To limit the development of tourism.
B.To create a sense of equality in society.
C.To help people value their traveling experience.
D.To make people less excited about travelling.
D
The Silk Roads were a network of ancient trade routes that extended from East Asia all the way to the Mediterranean. A key section of the Silk Roads is the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor (走廊) , which stretches over a distance of around 5, 000 kilometres through China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, covering a total of 8, 700 kilometres of trade routes. The three countries jointly pursued an application for UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) status which contained detailed research on the 33 sites along the corridor. This made history as the first successful multinational World Heritage application.
The starting point of the corridor and the entire Silk Roads network is Xi’an, in Shaanxi Province. Further west on the Silk Roads, the geography gradually changes from wild deserts to high, snow-capped mountains to vast grasslands as the routes pass through the Tianshan Mountains and emerge in the valleys of Central Asia. Although the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Roads ends here, the network continues westwards until it reaches the Mediterranean.
The corridor began to develop in the 2nd century. Assigned by the emperor, the ambassador Zhang Qian journeyed from Chang’an to Central Asia, seeking to build bridges between the Han Dynasty and the Western Regions. Following Zhang’s efforts, trade routes took shape and relationships were strengthened between the major powers of the time, with the routes network reaching as far as the Roman Empire.
Economic activities along the routes network were not limited to trade in silk. They contributed many other items to the marketplace of goods. The routes were busy with camels carrying loads of goods and businessmen selling everything imaginable. China’s exports included silk, porcelain, ironware and tea, while horses, jewellery, spices and grapes were all imported over vast distances from the West.
In addition to trade exchange, the network served as a bridge for cultural exchange which shaped the evolution of science, art, technology and many other areas in societies along the network. Astronomy and mathematics were introduced to China from India and Arabia; important Chinese inventions such as papermaking and printing were brought to the West.
All of these activities contributed to a great age of expansion as trade and cultural exchanges gave people access to new goods, knowledge and ideas. These routes connected Eastern and Western civilizations, which achieved a shared development. The addition of the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor to the UNESCO World Heritage List is a milestone in recognition of the Silk Roads as a crucial part of humanity’s common heritage.
12. What is the core section of the Silk Roads
A.The Mediterranean.
B.Xi’an, in Shaanxi Province.
C.Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
D.The Chang’an-Tianshan corridor.
13. What can we infer about the corridor’s early growth

Lila lived in a seaside village where green trees met the blue sea. She loved beach games but feared deep water since age six, when a huge wave covered her head. She never forgot how water filled her nose. Now at twelve, she only played where water touched her knees, watching others swim far out.
Her little brother Tom, only seven, had been sick for twenty days. His cough shook his small body, and he slept all day. The village nurse looked worried. “We need a miracle,” she sighed.
One sunny day, old sailor Ben sat on the beach. Children crowded around as he described a shining white shell in the hidden Sea Cave. “It has special power,” he said, showing his brown hands like a map. Lila knew instantly — this could help Tom!
At sunrise, Ben’s small boat took them over quiet waters. Jack, a boy with a friendly face who won swimming prizes, came to help. They jumped into clear water. Small yellow fish swam quickly around Lila’s legs. But as they went deeper, the water grew dark and cold. Lila’s heart beat fast. Dark rocks looked scary. She stopped moving, holding Jack’s arm tightly.
“Look at me!” Jack made funny faces. “See that starfish Swim to it with me!”
Ben stayed close, his voice peaceful. “Fear visits everyone,” he said. “But courage never leaves.” Lila agreed, moving her legs bravely.
Suddenly, strong waves pushed them hard. Salt water hurt Lila’s eyes. Through her teary eyes, she saw Tom’s favorite toy boat in her mind — she must save him! Closing her mouth, she pushed through the rough water, Jack leading the way.

47. Finally, they reached the dark cave. Dim light streamed through the gaps of the rocks, making the mysterious cave look quiet and magical. Lila calmed herself down and followed Jack to search carefully among the stones. After a short while, a shining white shell caught her eye. It lay quietly on a smooth rock, glowing softly in the dim light. Holding her breath, Lila swam forward gently and picked up the precious shell. Overwhelmed with joy, she knew her little brother would be saved soon.
After obtaining the shell, they headed back to the village immediately. As expected, the magical shell worked wonders. Tom’s cough disappeared gradually and he recovered day by day.
After that day, Lila was never afraid of deep water again.
That unforgettable experience taught her that courage means overcoming fear rather than having no fear. She practiced swimming constantly and became a brave swimmer later. She was grateful for the help from Ben and Jack, and more importantly, proud of herself for sticking to saving her brother. From then on, she faced all difficulties in life bravely, holding the belief that love and courage can beat everything.
