维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自北师大必修二U4】
While the Internet can bring people closer together, it can also harm friendships.
Firstly, talking online is no replacement for face-to-face contact—images really cannot replace a real-life smile or hug. According to a parenting expert, Denise Daniels, communicating through a screen makes it more difficult for children to concentrate or show kindness to others. As we know, important social skills are developed through direct contact with other people. It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships.
Secondly, the Internet can make people self-centred—not thinking of anyone or anything but themselves. For example, instead of having proper conversations with their friends, some people are only concerned with their online popularity—How many “likes” did I get How many followers do I have?—though we know that the number of “likes” or followers cannot compare to having long-term and rewarding friendships. In addition, a lot of the content posted on social media is shallow or trivial. Posts about funny cat images do not necessarily help form meaningful relationships.
Thirdly, online relationships may not be what they appear to be. Friendships are built on the basis of trust, and with online communication you can never be 100 percent sure that the people you are chatting to are being honest about who they are. Because of this, going online can be particularly dangerous for people who are easily influenced or too trusting.
In my opinion, friends should focus more on face-to-face communication, and less on online communication. This is the best way to maintain healthy relationships.
1.What's the attitude of Denise Daniels toward communicating through a screen
A.It enhances children's empathy.
B.It makes it easier for children to concentrate.
C.It helps children develop lifelong friendships.
D.It makes it harder for children to show kindness to others.
2.What can we know from paragraph 3
A.Self-centred people have proper communication with their friends.
B.Self-centred people are more likely to be concerned about how popular they are online.
C.The number of followers is more important than friendships in reality.
D.The content posted on social media is meaningless at all.
3.What can be inferred from the passage about the value of “likes” and followers on social media
A.They are essential for forming meaningful relationships.
B.They accurately reflect a person's popularity and worth.
C.They cannot replace the quality of long-term friendships.
D.They are the primary focus of all online interactions.
4.What is the author's suggestion for maintaining healthy friendships
A.Spending more time on social media.
B.Relying solely on online communication.
C.Focusing more on face-to-face communication.
D.Ignoring the importance of social media altogether.

(2025·郴州高一期中)Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage, but conflicts, climate change, globalization and tourism are all exacting a heavy price. Technology is now the most essential weapon in the battle. Here's how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.
As you can imagine, creating the replicas (复制品) via crowd sourced 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms (算法) are being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods.
Virtual reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are extremely fragile. Human interaction with these locations is doing a great deal of harm. Wastes accumulate everywhere, causing enormous problems. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at (and touch!) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.

U.S. teens spend more than eight hours a day on screens, and there's growing concern over it. Now, a new study published by the American Psychological (心理的) Association, confirms that teens seem to feel better about themselves when they cut back.
“Social media can feel like a comparison trap,” says study author Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University. Her research found that limiting screen time to about one hour a day helped anxious teens and young adults feel better about their body image and their appearance. “What I noticed in social media was that I couldn't help but compare myself,” Thai says. Reading posts from famous people and influencers, as well as people in her own social network, led to a lack of self-confidence.
So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reducing time on social media would improve body image. They gathered a few hundred volunteers, aged 17-25, all of whom had experienced symptoms (症状) of anxiety or depression—which could make them easily influenced by social media. Half of the volunteers were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media with no limits.
The researchers gave the volunteers surveys at the beginning and end of the study, including statements such as “I'm pretty happy about the way I look”, and “I am satisfied with my weight”. Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5-point scale. The change may seem small, but any change in such a short period of time is worth noticing.
“It's encouraging that college students were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks,” psychologist Andrea Graham says. While this study included people with symptoms of anxiety or depression, Graham says it's worth applying this approach to other groups, such as people with eating problems.

One day,12-year-old Sean Redden logged on to the Internet and went to a popular chat room.Just as he was about to sign off,he saw the name of someone he'd never seen there before,Susan. Her brief message was “Would someone help me?”
Sean typed back,“What's wrong?”A moment later he received this message,“I can't breathe.Help me! I can't feel my left side.I can't get out of my chair.”
Oh, man, Sean thought.Pretending to be paralyzed (瘫痪) was a bad joke. Then he wondered what if she really was sick?“Hey,Mom,” he called. “There's a kid here who's sick or something.” Sharon looked at the computer screen.“It's not just some game, is it?” she asked.
The message was not a joke.“Susan”was actually a 20-year-old student, working late at night at a college library near Helsinki, Finland—almost 7,000 miles away from Sean's home in Texas. While searching the Internet, she began to feel terrible pain all through her body. The library was silent and empty. The nearest phone was outside in the hallway. She couldn't move that far.Any movement caused the pain to get worse. Then she realized she might get help on the Internet.
“I don't think it's a joke, Mom,” Sean said. And he typed,“Where are you?”After a long pause (暂停), the letters appeared,“Finland.” Sean and Sharon couldn't believe it. Not knowing what else to do,Sharon called the local police.
Sharon explained the situation to officer Amy Schmidt.Schmidt told Sharon to try to get the sick girl's phone number.Texas police called the international telephone operator and asked to be connected to the proper agency (机构) in Finland. The call was transferred to a nearby rescue station. The Texas police gave Susan's address to the Finnish operator. When Sean heard that, he typed,“Help is on the way.”
In a few minutes,Susan heard people running down the hallway outside the door.Suddenly, the door opened.Emergency workers and three policemen ran in. Susan turned once more to the computer,“They are here.Thanks.Bye-bye.”
Four days later, the police in Texas received a message from officers in Finland:“Thanks to her Internet friend, Susan had received medical treatment she badly needed and is doing well.”

A team at a US university trained an AI tool to examine 60,000 fingerprints to see if it could work out which ones belonged to the same individual. The researchers claim the technology could identify, with 75-90% accuracy, whether prints from different fingers came from one person.
But they are not sure how it works. “We don't know for sure how the AI does it,” admitted Prof Hod Lipson, a roboticist at Columbia University who led the study.
Graham Williams, professor of forensic science (法医学) at Hull University, said the idea of unique fingerprints had never been set in stone. “We don't actually know that fingerprints are unique,” he said. “All we can say is that as far as we are aware, no two people have yet to show the same fingerprints.”The results of Columbia University's study could have the potential to impact both biometrics and forensic science.
If, for example, an unidentified thumb print is found at crime scene A, and an unidentified index (食指) fingerprint at crime scene B, the two could not currently be forensically connected to the same person—but the AI tool could be able to identify this.
The Columbia University study will be published in the journal Science Advances on Friday. But a pair of twins in Cheshire might be ahead of everyone. Their grandmother Carol told the BBC her two grandchildren can open each other's mobile phones using their own fingers.
“They showed me on Christmas day,” she said. “We were told they were identical when they were born but I can tell the difference between them as they've got older.” She claimed that her grandchildren can also bypass the handsets' facial recognition feature.
Fingerprints are formed before birth. Research published last year suggested the genetic process behind them may be similar to the way animals like zebras and leopards get their markings.

Rethink Food, a New York-based organization, is working hard to cut food waste and fight hunger by distributing (分发) food from restaurants and businesses to those in need.“We hope our example can show that it's not just possible, but totally practical to achieve a fairer food system,”co-founder and CEO Matt Jozwiak said.
Across the US, 38 million people struggle to get nutritious (有营养的) food, but 42 percent of the nation's food supply goes uneaten, according to Rethink Food's website.
Since Jozwiak started Rethink Food in 2017 with his friend Daniel Humm, the project has prepared and distributed more than 26 million meals and saved more than 2.5 million pounds of food waste—but the project has changed over the years.
“The year of 2020 marked a turning point for the food industry as a whole; we were no exception. As restaurants closed and people became jobless, food insecurity (无保障) grew. Rethink Food pivoted its model to support both struggling restaurants and food-insecure communities; we began buying meals directly from local restaurants to distribute to people in need,”said Jozwiak.
At the same time, Rethink Food began working not only with restaurants, but community-based organizations, food banks and other groups to ensure meals reached the needy. It also developed a program to help restaurants rehire workers and provide meals at affordable prices.
Weekly, Rethink Food receives nearly 12,000 pounds of food from some restaurants. Rethink Food collects food throughout the morning from these restaurants before dropping it off at its kitchen. Then, the organization's team create a menu, and prepare meals for delivery—made in the style of family cooking, but by cooks.
“We take great care to make sure the meals at our Sustainable Community Kitchen are delicious, nutritious, and made with love, ”said Jozwiak.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One evening, it was raining heavily. An old lady was sitting inside her car, stuck in the middle of the road. It was clear that she needed help badly. A poorly dressed man went near her car. He was hesitating to speak to her but still approached.
The lady pulled down the glass of the driver's seat. She looked worried. She tried to wear a smile seeing a needy man approaching her.
The man opened his mouth, “Hello Ma'am, can I help you?” The lady looked puzzled and said, “Yes.” “Please wait inside your car and let me see if I can solve the problem. By the way, I am Thomas Anderson,” Thomas said. Thomas discovered that she got a flat tire. Soon he went to fix the problem. After he finished, the lady began to talk to him.
She said, “I really don't have enough words to thank you. How much should I pay you?” She was actually ready to reward him for his kindness. Thomas was surprised. He had never expected any reward from her, though his family needed money badly, for their baby was going to be born the very next month.
He told her, “That's so nice of you, Ma'am. But if you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, please think of me and help that person. I hope this chain of love will not end with you.” He smiled and went away before the lady could further say anything.
The lady was so touched. Anyone who saw the ragged man would think how much he needed help. But he just told her something that she never thought of.
On her way, she found a small café down the road. She wanted to have a cup of warm coffee. As the lady went inside, a waitress came up to her with a very clean towel so that she could wipe her hair. The lady observed that the waitress, who was all smiles to her, was heavily pregnant. She looked like she needed rest but she tried not to show any sign of tiredness.

One possible version:
While drinking the coffee, the old lady thought of Thomas and his words to her. She knew what to do. After she finished, she paid her bill. When the waitress came back with the change, the lady was gone. The waitress looked for her outside the café but the lady and her car were out of sight. Confused, she came back. While she was about to clean the table, she found a note written on the napkin. The note read, “Someone helped me out just the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, please don't let this chain of love end with you.”
The waitress found that below the napkin there was 500 dollars. She wondered how the lady knew how much this money meant to her, with the baby to be born the very next month. She took the money and went back home. While having dinner, she shared the story of the kind lady with her husband, Thomas Anderson. Both of them realized that it was Thomas' kindness that was rewarded in a special way.Period 3 Writing

Mystery Oxygen Source Discovered on the Sea Floor
Adapted from Nature
Something is pumping out large amounts of oxygen at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, at depths where a total lack of sunlight makes photosynthesis impossible.
Sweetman and his collaborators were studying sea-floor ecosystems in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, an area between Hawaii and Mexico that is larger than India and a potential target for the mining of metal-rich nodules. During such expeditions, the team releases a module that sinks to the sea floor to perform automated experiments. Once there, the module drives cylindrical chambers down to close off small sections of the sea floor—together with some seawater—and create “an enclosed microcosm of the seafloor”. The lander then measures how the concentration of oxygen in the confined seawater changes over periods of up to several days.
Generally speaking, without any photosynthetic organisms releasing oxygen into the water, and with any other organisms consuming the gas, oxygen concentrations inside the chambers should slowly fall. Sweetman has seen that happen in studies he has conducted in areas of the Southern, Arctic and Indian oceans, and in the Atlantic. Around the world, sea-floor ecosystems owe their existence to oxygen carried by currents from the surface, and would quickly die if cut off.
But in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, the instruments showed that the sequestered water became richer, not poorer, in oxygen. At first, Sweetman attributed the readings to a sensor malfunction. But the phenomenon kept occurring during subsequent trips in 2021 and 2022, and was confirmed by measurements with an alternative technique. “I suddenly realized that for eight years I'd been ignoring this potentially amazing new process, 4,000 metres down on the ocean floor,” says Sweetman.
“We have another source of oxygen on the planet, other than photosynthesis,” says study co-author Andrew Sweetman, a sea-floor ecologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, UK—although the mechanism behind this oxygen production remains a mystery. The findings could also have implications for understanding how life began, he says, as well as for the possible impact of deep-sea mining in the region.

性格孤僻的小女孩玛丽、农家小子迪肯和体弱多病的少爷柯林成了好朋友,他们找到了秘密花园的钥匙,和花园一起经历了一次诗意般的复活。
For two or three minutes Dickon stood looking① round him, while② Mary watched him, and then he began to walk about③ softly④, even more lightly than Mary had walked the first time she had found herself inside the four walls. His eyes seemed to be taking in⑤ everything—the gray trees with the gray creepers (爬山虎) climbing⑥ over them and hanging from their branches, the tangle⑦ on the walls and among the grass, the evergreen alcoves (壁龛) with the stone seats and tall flower urns (缸) standing in them.
“I never thought I'd see this place,” he said at last, in a whisper⑧.
“Did you know about it?” asked Mary.
She had spoken aloud and he made a sign⑨ to her.
“We must talk low,” he said, “or someone'll hear us an' wonder⑩ what's to do in here.”
“Oh! I forgot!” said Mary, feeling frightened and putting her hand quickly against her mouth.
“Did you know about the garden?” she asked again when she had recovered herself.
Dickon nodded .
“Martha told me there was one as no one ever went inside,” he answered. “We used to wonder what it was like.”
He stopped and looked round at the lovely gray tangle about him, and his round eyes looked queerly happy.
“Eh! the nests as'll be here come springtime,” he said. “It'd be th' safest nestin' place in England. No one never comin' near an' tangles o' trees an' roses to build in. I wonder all th' birds on th' moor don't build here.”
Mistress Mary put her hand on his arm again without knowing it.
“Will there be roses?” she whispered. “Can you tell I thought perhaps they were all dead.”
“Eh! No! Not them—not all of 'em!” he answered. “Look here!”
He stepped over to the nearest tree—an old, old one with gray lichen all over its bark , but upholding a curtain of tangled sprays (小树枝) and branches. He took a thick knife out of his pocket and opened one of its blades.
“There's lots o' dead wood as ought to be cut out,” he said. “An' there's a lot o' old wood, but it made some new last year. This here's a new bit,” and he touched a shoot which looked brownish green instead of hard, dry gray.
Mary touched it herself in an eager , reverent way.
“That one?” she said. “Is that one quite alive?”
Dickon curved his wide smiling mouth.
“It's as wick as you or me,” he said; and Mary remembered that Martha had told her that “wick” meant “alive” or “lively”.
“I'm glad it's wick!” she cried out in her whisper. “I want them all to be wick. Let us go round the garden and count how many wick ones there are.”
She quite panted with eagerness, and Dickon was as eager as she was. They went from tree to tree and from bush to bush. Dickon carried his knife in his hand and showed her things she thought wonderful .
“They've run wild ,” he said, “but th' strongest one has fair thrived on it.”
“See here!” and he pulled down a thick gray, dry-looking branch. “Anybody might think this was dead wood, but I don't believe it is.”
He knelt and with his knife cut the lifeless-looking branch through.
“There!” he said exultantly . “There's green in that wood yet. Look at it.”
Mary was down on her knees before he spoke, gazing with all her might .

(2025·盐城五校联考) Many Silicon Valley parents are becoming more concerned about preventing their children from using screens. Some parents think that even a little screen time can be extremely addictive, so it is better if their children avoid using or seeing these devices completely. However, it is difficult for working adults in the 21st century to give up using a phone at home. So, it's simpler to employ someone to do this.
“Silicon Valley nanny (保姆)”, who takes children back to a time without screens every day is widely needed. From Cupertino to San Francisco, it's widely agreed that screen time is harmful to youngsters. Therefore, parents are requesting nannies to keep phones, tablets and computers in a hidden place.Others even offer no-phone agreements.
Research shows that spending too much time on technology can harm young minds. For example, teenagers who use social media frequently are more likely to feel depressed and anxious.Insomnia (失眠) rates have also increased amongst this age group, and an increasing number of children display the signs that they can't focus attention. These seemingly minor (轻微的) problems could become significant challenges for future generations.
“Many parents come back home and focus on their smartphones, ignoring whatever their children are trying to say,” said Shannon Zimmerman, who works as a nanny in San Jose for families that forbid screen time.“As a nanny, I also call on more parents to spend more time with their kids.”

(2025·常德高一期中)When it comes to technology, adults won't be able to keep up with their children. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million people, but it took only 20 years for the phone to reach the same number, and 13 years for the television. However, it took social media only 88 days. Over the last 15 years, digital communication has brought in more changes than the printing press did in 1570. And those most likely to use them in this world are teenagers, whose brains appear to have a great ability to adapt to the world around them, according to Dr. Jay Giedd, a brain expert.
We are now discovering that our brains during the teenage years are still flexible (灵活的). Having a more flexible brain means that certain functions of it, such as the ability to make long-term decisions, haven't developed yet, which may also explain why we spend a long period living under the protection of our parents rather than leaving home at the age of 12 or 13. This also means that the teenage brain can adapt to new technology, allowing teenagers to keep up with the increasing pace (速度) of digital technology, giving them an advantage when doing different tasks.
As they look at these screens, they're dealing with information. There are concerns about how social media is affecting the way in which the brain learns to socialize. Giedd says that a lot of what goes on inside our brains is social. Social interactions are being changed by technology—you could have hundreds of friends, all of whom are real people that you interact with and scientists aren't sure whether we'll be able to develop the same skills using social media.
There is an advantage to the growing digital trend (趋势): A Internet platform shows that teenagers all over the world are watching the same things and laughing at the same jokes, showing that they are more global-minded than teenagers in the past. They are more open to other cultures, other countries, and other people.

One possible version:
Our English teacher wants to set up an English Corner. I made a survey to see how my classmates think about this. The majority of the students are in favour of it, while 30% of them are opposed to it.
70% of the students think that the English Corner can enrich their school life. They can learn something new by talking with other students, which also helps to improve the friendship between classmates. What's more, they can practice their oral English.
But the others don't think so. They say they have too much homework to do and that there is little time for the English Corner. Some of them are not good at expressing their own ideas in English, so they don't want to speak English at all.
In my opinion, we should have such an English Corner. If we are not good at speaking English, we should practice more.
Ⅲ.读后续写
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jeremy Savage aged 17, and Ian Marshall aged 16, were close friends. They grew up together because their parents were friends, too. Every autumn, the two families would go together on a trip to the mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced that they would climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves the next morning and promised to get back before dusk.
The next morning, the boys set out with a backpack packed with food and water, the autumn breeze caressing their cheeks. Along the winding path, they glanced at a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Jeremy and Ian decided to climb down. Suddenly, the trouble began. On one very dangerous stretch of road, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and unable to move.
“Help!” Jeremy shouted. No reply.“Help!Help!” Jeremy almost cried. But there were still no replies. “If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag,” Jeremy mouthed, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Ian was bleeding, so he cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian's face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian's right leg was seriously hurt. They had to wait and hoped that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Jeremy used an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn't arrive.

One possible version:
In low spirits, Ian told Jeremy to leave him to go back to their parents. But Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Jeremy shivering. Disappointment welled up inside him. Jeremy knew he had to do something rather than wait. Weighing the pros and cons, Jeremy finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. Jeremy carried Ian on his back and they started the long way back to the campsite. However, the mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Jeremy to climb down.
Exhausted, Jeremy felt hopeless with Ian on his back. Ian begged Jeremy to leave him alone again. Jeremy felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy swept over them and Jeremy shouted his loudest “help”. Out came a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Jeremy did for me,”said Ian afterwards. “He saved my life. [1]Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly, and he wanted to be sure he hadn't left any detail unchecked. No possible problem was too small to be ignored. He had never lost a contest, but that didn't calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there.
[2] The other kids, however, rarely came over to him.Whenever they did, it usually made him feel like they'd been forced to do it. No way, though, was he going over to them. He'd win again, and they couldn't ignore that.
[3]He opened his toolbox. Pushing aside engines, igniters (点火器), glue, tape, and clips, he pulled out the pieces of his launch pad and began assembling it. Tom checked his rocket again with satisfaction. Everything from the smooth fuselage to perfect aerodynamics told him he had another winner—especially when he glanced at the other rockets.
[4]He noticed problems quickly. A green rocket had dents and rough areas around. He knew its altitude would be limited. Another had fins(尾翼) too close to its center of gravity—without a doubt the rocket would tumble. One rocket, however, caught his eye. It had the look. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his. Tom felt a little nervous but he turned away and continued his work.
[5]“Hi,” a voice interrupted his focus. It was a thin boy, Ed, offering a nervous smile, “Nice rocket.” Tom looked up and whispered thanks. Just as Ed lifted his rocket, Tom noticed a fin on Ed's rocket had loosened. Obviously, Ed hadn't noticed it. Tom felt a bit sorry but hesitated to say anything.
[6]As Ed's turn approached, Tom's heart raced. He had to speak up, despite the risk of losing. “Ed, hold up!” he shouted, drawing the attention of the crowd.

维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自人教必修二U3】
Much has been written about the wonders of the World Wide Web. There are countless articles telling us how the Internet has made our lives more convenient. We no longer have to wait in line or carry cash around when we go shopping. We can get the most updated information from large databases. We can download software, documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internet has done much more for people than simply make life more convenient. People's lives have been changed by online communities and social networks.
Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, suddenly developed a serious illness and had to quit her job. At age 50, she found herself out of work and stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. After a while, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored. She could listen to music, watch films, play games, and explore the world. She also joined an online group where she could talk about her problems and get support and advice from others. She realised that one of the greatest benefits of the Internet was its ability to remove the distance that usually exists between people.
She was so inspired by the people she met online that she decided to start an IT club to teach older people how to use computers and the Internet. She and her friends now organise events and collect money to pay for private teachers. Many people have been helped by the club. A 59-year-old man learnt how to apply for work online and found a great job. Now that he works and can take care of himself, his daughter has time to study at university. A 61-year-old woman who was living alone has started a small online company together with two friends. She no longer feels lonely, and her company has become quite successful.

Ⅰ.阅读理解

Cyber-attacks may sound like something that happens only in Hollywood movies. You picture a team of talented hackers gathered around computer monitors trying to break into a secure bank or some important servers. In reality, cyber-attacks are much less exciting but to less dangerous.
Cyber-attacks can happen to anybody. It doesn't matter who you are; cyber criminals can target you. While many often think hacking victims were clueless about digital security best practices, this isn't always the case. True, there are plenty of apparent scams (骗局) that can be easily identified, but there are many attacks that can fool even the skillful computer-users.
Criminals create fake websites and email addresses. You may think you are clicking a link to Dropbox, only to download malware (恶意软件) onto your computer, and may never know when you have visited the wrong site and downloaded an infected file. So, it's up to you to be vigilant and protect yourself.
So you need to learn to recognize the signs of cyber attacks. First, recognize suspicious activity on your accounts or devices. While some things may be obvious, such as account password changes, others aren't so easy to spot. And then, you might receive a file from a trusted sender whose mail has been leaked. Sometimes, the data are even real, but the hacker may have inserted a few lines of code that can also infect your computer. You should take the time to check your “Task Manager” to get a sense of what programs are running. Check anything suspicious that's running in the background. That's often the sign of malware. Other things to watch out for include: random devices or an Internet slowdown; the software you don't recognize;inability to access your account or unscheduled shutdowns and restarts.
As with everything, prevention is the best medicine. So, instead of waiting for cyber-attacks to hit you, recognize the signs to protect yourself.

(2025·盐城高一期中)Students perform less well in final exams if smartphones are allowed in class, for non-academic (非学业的) purposes in lectures,a new study in Educational Psychology finds. Students who don't use smartphones themselves but attend lectures where their use is acceptable also do worse, suggesting that smartphone use damages the group learning environment.
Researchers from Rutgers University in the US performed an in-class experiment to test whether dividing attention between smartphones and the lecturer during the class affected students' performance in within-lecture tests and a final exam.118 students at Rutgers University took part in the experiment during one term of their course. Smartphones were not allowed in half of the lectures and allowed in the other half. When smartphones were allowed, students were asked to record whether they had used them for non-academic purposes during the lecture.
The study found that having a smartphone didn't lower students' scores in comprehension tests within lectures, but it did lower scores in the final exam by at least 5%, or half a grade. This finding shows for the first time that the main effect of divided attention in the classroom is on the length of time in keeping memory, with fewer things of a study task later remembered. In addition, when the use of smartphones was allowed in class, performance was also poorer for students who did not use them as well as for those who did.
The study's lead author,Professor Arnold Glass, added:“These findings should alarm students and teachers that dividing attention is having a not obvious but harmful effect that is damaging their exam performance and final grade. To help manage the use of smartphones in the classroom, teachers should explain to students the alarming effect—not only for themselves, but for the whole class.”
This is the first-ever study in an actual classroom showing a relationship between losing attention from smartphones and exam performance. However, more research is required to see how students are affected by using smartphones after school.

(2025·龙岩期末) Every organisation has tons of important data to protect.Important business data, customers' personal information, and confidential documents that should not be shown to outsiders are a few examples. The safety of data is only made possible by using network safety tools and skills.
The importance of network safety in the modern business has increased since a large part of the workforce started working remotely (远程).Today, office information systems are spread in one huge network across many areas.A centralized system to protect network devices from being attacked doesn't exist as it did before. This design leaves more vulnerable (脆弱) points that hackers (黑客) can take advantage of.
A cybercriminal (网络犯罪) can find these vulnerable points and cause damage to the system inside. An incident like this will lead to loss of funds, confidential information, and customer data, and it will also destroy the name of the business.
In March 2020, an international hotel group suffered a major data attack in which the information of 5.2 million guests was accessed (获取) using the login information of two employees.Strong network safety techniques are modern-day necessities for the survival of businesses, but more than that, network safety awareness has also become the need of the hour.
For today's businesses, network safety is not limited to IT professionals and companies connected with work safety is for everyone—lawyers, designers, musicians, bankers, and others will all find a network safety system beneficial for their work and business.By fixing network safety system and training employees on it, a small business will make its employees more responsible, a law office will better protect its data, and a designer will find more effective ways to control their important documents.

I had heard about VR being used in the classroom but didn't think I'd ever try it. I actually got a VR headset (耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through Internet and knew I had a lesson!
To use VR in the classroom, you need two things: a smartphone that can download (下载) the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we'd be watching, I searched through free VR apps. I also found hundreds of videos. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don't give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive (沉浸式虚拟现实的) when viewed through the headsets.
So far we've had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade US History class. The app allows students to “walk” through a trench (战壕) during World War Ⅰ and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions (反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.
For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I'm going to buy a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.
