(2025·吉林期末)In May, we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, or AAPI Heritage Month. My family comes from Bangladesh, a country in South Asia. A few decades ago, members of my family moved to the United States. They lived in New Jersey, where some other relatives had already lived.
While family members have got used to American ways of life, the Bangladeshi culture is still alive through our food and culture. Traditionally in May, we go to my grandmother's house and make homemade parathas, fresh mint tea, aloo tikki, khichri, and phirni, all of which are delicious Bangladeshi foods.
When my mother was growing up, she often asked my grandma to make parathas.“Even now, I ask my mum to make parathas. Having my mum's parathas reminds me of something from my childhood.” she says.
Often, we start our morning by picking fresh mint from my grandma's garden, which we later use in our tea. We then collect what is needed for—the star of our breakfast, parathas. Some simple things include flour (面粉), water and salt. The most important part is to knead the dough (揉面团). Many things can go wrong, such as adding too much water or not adding enough flour. With practice, the end result is fried bread that is thin.
Shortly after our light breakfast, we prepare aloo tikki. It starts with mashing (捣碎) potatoes. My grandma often uses salt and lemon to make the potatoes taste better. Next, the potatoes are shaped into small round pieces and fried in oil. The final thing on our menu is phirni, a rice pudding. It's the perfect way to end a Bangladeshi meal.
My grandmother moved to the U.S. as a teenager. It's a gift to learn about her experiences and to learn from her about Bangladeshi culture. Although Bangladesh is a lesser known Asian country, through people like my grandmother, Bangladeshi culture and traditions will continue.

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
I'm glad to receive your letter. I'd like to share my opinion with you about celebrating festivals through travelling.
Some are in favour of staying at home. They say it is both relaxing and comfortable. But they will lose the chance of getting to know the outside world. However, others prefer to go out travelling as it can enrich their knowledge and broaden their views. But they will go through some trouble while travelling.
In my opinion, it would be much better to stay at home. When staying at home, I can do whatever I like, such as reading books, watching TV, and doing sports. In short, to stay at home is a better way to celebrate.
Yours,
Li Hua
Ⅲ.读后续写
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since I was young, I have always enjoyed cooking.Every night I would sit in the kitchen and watch my mother make dinner. On Sundays, my grandmother would make a huge family dinner for us. A dish, charred (烧焦的) chicken with flavored sauce, enjoyed great popularity with us. Watching my grandmother in the kitchen was like watching an artist at work. She never needed a cookbook or had to follow a recipe.I couldn't wait to learn to cook myself.
So it was no surprise when as an adult I decided to be a chef. I had worked in a number of kitchens around the years, but when I got the chance to be the head chef at a new restaurant, I could not have been more excited.
On the first night the restaurant opened, I proudly put my apron (围裙) on and prepared for success. Soon, orders came in, and the kitchen was full of staff running in every direction. There were many waiters coming in and out, and cooks at their stations. It was very exciting, but a bit stressful. There was so much to do and a lot of pressure to do it perfectly. It looked like the crowd was not slowing down.
I was hurrying to gather ingredients from the shelves and fill the orders when there was a scream from the other side of the kitchen. Looking around, I saw one of the cooks holding her hand in pain. She had burned her fingers on a pan. I ran over to help, and as I placed her hand under cold water, a puff (一缕) of smoke started to rise out of the oven.
“Oh, no!” I screamed. I reached the oven just in time to open the door and see the charred roast. Placing my hand on my head, I thought the night couldn't get much worse.Just at that moment, one of the waiters came into the kitchen, looking very worried.Wiping the sweat off his forehead, he said anxiously,“The guests are asking for the roast.”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I stared at the charred roast, anxious to find a solution.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, the waiter came back and said that one of the guests asked to speak to me.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I stared at the charred roast, anxious to find a solution. Suddenly, its smell reminded me of a family dinner, when my grandmother cooked charred chicken with flavored sauce. Letting out an excited scream, I cooked the way she did. I mixed vinegar with sugar to make sauce and then poured it onto the roast. Finally, the waiter served the flavored roast to the guests. “What if the guests don't like the dish?” I thought to myself.
Just then, the waiter came back and said that one of the guests asked to speak to me. Never before in my life had I sunk into such a stressful situation. I followed the waiter, my heart in my mouth. To my surprise, the guest stood up and held my hands. “Thanks for bringing the taste of hometown back to me,” she said in excitement. Beyond my expectation, the first night as the head chef turned out to be a great success. Full of confidence, I returned to the kitchen and continued to brighten people's lives with delicious food.INCLUDEPICTURE "英YLBXEUNIT3LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../英YLBXEUNIT3LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../英YLBXEUNIT3LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../英YLBXEUNIT3LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT INCLUDEPICTURE "../../../英YLBXEUNIT3LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT

维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自外研必修二U2】
Many people still remember the magic of Father Christmas from when they were children. As parents, they try to keep that magic alive for their children for as long as they can.
That is why Letters from Father Christmas could be the perfect book for those who regard Christmas as a special time of year. The man who wrote these letters is one of the most famous names in English literature—J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings. The letters were Tolkien's way of keeping Father Christmas alive for his four children, over a period of more than twenty years.
Every Christmas, an envelope with a North Pole stamp arrived. It was addressed to Tolkien's children. Who could it be from The children must have been very excited as they opened it. Inside, they would find a handwritten letter from Father Christmas. The letters were also beautifully illustrated—each must have taken its true author, Tolkien, a long time to complete.
The letters told wonderful stories about Father Christmas's life and adventures at the North Pole. A regular character in the letters was Polar Bear, who once climbed the North Pole (an actual pole in this case) and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house. In another letter, Father Christmas complained about how he could not stop his helpers playing games with the toys instead of wrapping them up . Interestingly, the letters did not contain the usual warnings to children that they might not receive their presents if they were not good. The letters did, however, change as Tolkien's children got older:
...but if you find that not many of the things you asked for have come, and not perhaps quite as many as sometimes, remember that this Christmas all over the world there are a terrible number of poor and starving people.

(2025·雅安高一检测)These days, ice is easy to get.You can walk to your ice maker and have ice fall into your glass.Hundreds or thousands of years ago, ice wasn't this easy to be made or to get.In the past, it involved harvesting ice from frozen bodies of water.
People throughout history have known the value of ice.People in ancient China would wait till the winter to make ice blocks from frozen rivers and then they would use ice blocks to keep food cool through warmer months. In ancient cultures, ice was luxury (奢侈品).Royalty would ship ice and then use it for juice drinks and other treats. In an age when there were no ice makers, ice was truly short in supply and a sign of power.
Sometimes its translucence (半透明) made it perfect for decorative purposes.Centuries ago, some Chinese villagers would freeze buckets and water, cut a hole in the top and pour out the unfrozen water. Then they'd put a candle into the center. And that is what we call ice lanterns (冰灯) now.
And there are now a lot of big events around the world, some of which result in entire multi story buildings made from ice, with colored lights that make them look like a frozen fairy tale land.
In 1990, Alaska became the host of the annual World Ice Art Championships, which is now a month long event that attracts dozens of teams and tens of thousands of visitors.Canada is home to several large ice based events, including the Ice Magic Festival near Lake Louise and the Deep Freeze Festival in Edmonton.
But the biggest and most mind blowing event is the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. When completed, the grounds will turn into a real ice world, full of huge buildings and beautiful art with the best visual effect. The ice world includes many features like the Great Wall of China and the Egyptian pyramids, all quite at home in this city that has a lower temperature in January.

(2025·安徽淮南四中第二次阶段考)It was Mother's Day, but I knew there would be no celebration for me.I was a mother of a very active two year old child and my husband was a Captain of a Navy ship. That morning I had been up early and had already taken several phone calls from both Navy wives and other people needing to be comforted. After one phone call, I leaned back in my chair and said to myself, “Oh, I am busying myself being a blessing to others, but what about me Is there anything for me today?”
At that very moment the telephone rang.It was the voice of a little girl who said,“Miss Stephanie, I've been thinking of you!” It took my breath away! I had known this girl from another city, but at that moment it was to me the best voice in the world! I greatly valued the thoughtfulness of the little one and her family who knew my husband was out.But even greater than their kindness, I felt deeply touched by the timing of the call and felt that precious voice spoke to me of great love for me.
There have been many Mother's Days since that one, but none so special, so deeply moving.I will never forget how it felt to know that I was loved and that I would never be forgotten.
In the United States and elsewhere, Mother's Day has become synonymous (密不可分的) with lots of human expectations. If we're not careful, the fulfillment of these expectations can become a false standard of feeling loved and a heavy burden (负担) on our family. When I think of that Mother's Day long ago, tears come into my eyes, but not out of sadness.I'm delighted at the great love and care I felt and still feel to this day.

Respecting and taking care of the aged parents is regarded as an obligatory duty in China. Chinese people believe that only those 1.who are concerned with and practice filial (孝顺的) devotion to their parents would be honest, 2.faithful(faith), and be grateful to others.
Parents' love, especially mother's love is a 3.repeated(repeat) subject in Chinese ancient poems, like Song of the Parting Son by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. Now this poem is still 4.a must in school textbooks. Children in China 5.are_brought(bring) up with the education of filial devotion.
There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. One example is the story of Taste Liquid Medicine for Mother (《亲尝汤药》). It tells us about the filial virtue of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up at her bedside and 6.nursed(nurse) her day and night. Chinese people take herbal medicine prescribed by Chinese doctor. Herbs are boiled with water 7.to_make(make) a liquid medicine. Before giving such medicine to his mother, Han Wendi first tasted it to ensure it was not too hot 8.or too bitter.
Han Wendi was on the throne for 24 years. He governed the country 9.with morals, advocated rites and etiquette, and paid great attention to agricultural development. As a result, the Western Han became stable and prosperous (繁荣的). The economy was resumed and developed. This period is known as the “Peace and Prosperity During the Reign of Emperors Wen and Jing” in history.
Though there are some parts of imagination in the story, Chinese people are 10.deeply(deep) influenced and transformed by this model of filial virtue.

AI Boosts to Cancer Detection
Adapted from New Scientist Jan.7
Artificial intelligence models really can help spot cancer, according to the largest study of its kind, which found using AI helped radiologists identify an extra 1 in 1,000 cases of breast cancer.
Alexander Katalinic at the University of Lübeck, Germany, and his colleagues worked with almost 200 certified radiologists to test an AI trained to identify signs of breast cancer from the scan results. The radiologists examined 460,818 women across 12 breast cancer screening sites in Germany between July 2021 and February 2023, and each person could choose whether or not to use AI. Those who elected to use AI successfully detected breast cancer at a rate of 6.7 instances in every 1,000 scans—17.6 per cent higher than the 5.7 per 1,000 scans among those who chose not to use AI.
The scale at which AI improved detection of breast cancer “was extremely positive and exceeded our expectations”, said Katalinic in a statement. Stefan Bunk at Vara, an AI company involved in the study said, “AI is not inferior to radiologists. That's an interesting scenario to save some workload.”
“The study offers further evidence for the benefits of AI in breast screening and should be yet another wake up call for policymakers to accelerate AI adoption,” says Ben Glocker at Imperial College London. “Its results confirm what we have been seeing again and again: with the right integration strategy, the use of AI is both safe and effective.”
He welcomes the way the study allowed radiologists to make their own decisions about when to use AI, and would like to see more tests of AI performed in a similar way. “We cannot easily assume this in the lab or via simulations and instead need to learn from real world experience,” says Glocker. “The technology is ready; we now need policymakers to accelerate adoption in breast screening.”

A Conversation with Ben
Excerpt from The Secret Garden
性格孤僻的小女孩玛丽、农家小子迪肯和体弱多病的少爷柯林成了好朋友,他们找到了秘密花园的钥匙,和花园一起经历了一次诗意般的复活。
She almost forgot about lunch, and when she arrived back in her room, she was very hungry and ate twice① as much as usual.“Martha,” she said as② she was eating,“I've been thinking. This is a big, lonely house, and there isn't much for me to do.Do you think, if I buy a little spade③, I can make my own garden?”
“That's just what Mother said,” replied Martha.“You'd enjoy digging④ and watching plants growing⑤.Dickon can get you a spade, and some seeds to plant.”
“Oh,thank you, Martha! I've got some money that Mrs. Medlock gave me.Will you write and ask Dickon to buy them for me?”
“I will. And he'll bring them to you himself.”
“Oh!Then I'll see him.”Mary looked very excited. Then she remembered something.“I heard that cry in the house again, Martha. It wasn't the wind this time.I've heard it three times now.Who is it?”
Martha looked uncomfortable⑥.“You mustn't go wandering around⑦ the house, you know.Mr. Craven wouldn't like it.Now I must go and help the others downstairs.I'll see you at tea time.”
As the door closed behind Martha, Mary thought to herself, “This really is the strangest house that⑧ anyone ever lived in.”
Mary spent nearly a week working in the secret garden. Each day she found new shoots⑨ coming out of the ground.Soon, there would be flowers everywhere—thousands of them.It was an exciting game to her. When she was inside those beautiful old walls, no one knew where she was.
During that week she became more friendly with Ben, who⑩ was often digging in one of the vegetable gardens.
“What are your favourite flowers, Ben?” she asked him one day.
“Roses.I used to work for a young lady who loved roses, you see, and she had a lot in her garden. That was ten years ago. But she died.Very sad, it was.”
“What happened to the roses?” asked Mary.
“They were left there, in the garden.”
“When they have no leaves and look grey and brown and dry, how can you tell whether they are dead or alive ?” asked Mary.
“Wait till the sun shines and the rain falls, and then you will find out.”
“How—how?” cried Mary eagerly , forgetting to be careful.
“Look along the twigs and branches and if you see a brown lump swelling here and there, watch it after the warm rain and see what happens.” He stopped suddenly and looked curiously at her eager face. “But why are you so interested in roses?” he asked.
Mary's face went red.“I just...want to play in a garden of my own. I haven't got anyone to play with.” she stammered .
“Well, that's true,”said Ben.He seemed to feel sorry for her.Mary decided she liked old Ben, although he was sometimes bad-tempered .
There was a gate from the garden out into a wood, in the park. Mary wanted to see if there were any rabbit in the wood. When she reached the little gate, she opened it and went through. Suddenly, she heard an unusual sound and wanted to find out what it was.

Festivals are celebrated all around the world. They have a wide range of origins, such as the seasons of the year, religions, famous figures, and important events. Every festival has its different customs and unique charms. However,no matter how different they may seem, all over the world, the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace is common in all festivals.
Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest festival can be found in almost every culture. This important agricultural festival takes place after all the crops have been gathered in. People celebrate to show that they are grateful for the year's supply of food. In ancient Egypt, the harvest festival was celebrated during the springtime—the Egyptian harvest season. It featured a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sports. Today, in some European countries, people decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and get together to celebrate over a meal. During the Mid Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.
Customs play a significant role in festivals, but sometimes they can change over time. With the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas, some traditions may fade away and others may be established. One example is the typical Chinese Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits and celebrate the new year. Nowadays, many big cities have given up this custom in order to avoid air pollution. Another example is Halloween, which slowly became an exciting festival for children, in spite of its religious origins.

3.How do people celebrate the harvest festival in some European countries today
A.They decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and get together to celebrate over a meal.
B.They parade and have a great feast with music, dancing, and sports.
C.They admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.
D.They light firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits.
4.Why did many big cities give up the custom of lighting firecrackers during the Chinese Spring Festival
A.Because it is no longer a traditional custom.
B.Because it is too noisy and disturbing.

答案:1~4.DBAC

(2025·聊城颐中外国语学校期中)The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon Head Raising Festival, falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year, and marks the start of spring and farming.
Longtaitou literally means “dragon raises its head”, symbolizing that the rain bringing Dragon King has awakened from his winter sleep and the spring rains are to come. A well known phrase goes, “Er yue er, long tai tou”, meaning “On the second day of the second lunar month, the dragon lifts his head.”
The festival celebrates ancient agrarian (土地的) Chinese culture, and while some of traditional ways to celebrate it are no longer practiced, others persist.
The most famous tradition is getting a haircut. Many believe that going to the barber on this day gets rid of bad luck and getting a haircut during the first month of the lunar calendar brings bad luck. Another saying warns that cutting your hair in the first lunar month will cause your uncle to die. Although today few pay attention to it,_it is a tradition to line up outside barber shops on the day of Longtaitou, for people have avoided haircuts for the preceding month.
People eat tofu balls in East China's Fujian Province during the festival, and often make tofu and vegetable balls to pray for family and business. Fried beans are the traditional festival fare for people in parts of Shandong Province.
Meanwhile other foods, like dumplings, spring rolls and popcorn, are named after dragon body parts to mark the day. Noodles are dragon's beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon's ears (long er), spring rolls are dragon's scales (long lin), and popcorn is dragon's seeds (long zi).
People across the country celebrate Longtaitou Festival with various activities. “Through these activities, we hope the children can get a deeper understanding of the cultural connotation (内涵) of traditional Chinese festivals,” said Jin Qingfen, a teacher from a kindergarten. “It will also help them enhance their sense of national pride and belonging.”

(2025·大连期中)In many cultures, a girl's “big day” is recognized as her wedding day. But in the Philippines, many girls don't have to wait that long. Eighteenth birthdays are a formal celebration, called “the debut”, which means the girls enter the age of adulthood.
“I actually didn't like the idea of celebrating a debut because I was really boyish when I was younger,” explained Hannah Cafe,a recent debutante. “But when I heard my mom's plans, they changed my mind. They brought out a different side of me—the one that wanted to be treated like a princess.”
Traditionally, the debutante wears a grand dress and is surrounded by her family and friends throughout a program that includes a dance by a group of people, an “18 roses” segment (部分), where the important men in the debutante's life present her with a rose and invite her to dance, and an “18 candles” segment, where the important women in her life give individual speeches and good wishes.
But many debutantes today introduce modern elements to the celebration. “Instead of having the regular ‘18 roses’ and ‘18 candles’, we used ‘18 carnations (康乃馨)’ and ‘18 sparklers’,” described Hannah.
During the “18 flowers” segment, it tends to get more emotional during the father daughter dance. But Hannah laughed at the question of getting emotional during this part of her debut. “Actually, my father was so energetic that he had everyone bursting out laughing.”
Hannah's debut had other additional 18 themed segments, like the “18 gifts”, but her favorite moment wasn't even part of the program she knew of. “My favorite part was the surprise song prepared by my classmates. I really appreciated the fact that they spent time practicing it and kept it secret from me. My eyes got teary on that occasion when they started singing.”
“A girl's debut marks a very important day in her life,” said Hannah. “That's something she gets to treasure forever.”

(2025·广安期末)As the Spring Festival approaches, discussions on “festive atmosphere fading away (逐渐消失)” have once again risen to the surface; yet a closer look reveals that young people are not throwing away traditions, but celebrating the festival in new and innovative ways.
On the lifestyle platform, users share couplets (对联) they have written.Instead of poetic wishes, the paired phrases could be numbers, emojis and plain slogans—with “Having money and knowledge; Losing weight and troubles” an often seen refrain. These funny couplets have encouraged many people to continue the Spring Festival tradition of hanging couplets and sticking gate god pictures.Calligraphy, woodcut pictures and traditional paintings also gain in popularity among people born from 1995 to 2010.
Another rebounding (复苏的) tradition is wearing hanfu, a traditional garment of the Han people, often worn during festivals. For people born after 1990s, one of the childhood Spring Festival customs was buying new clothes. Some still embrace this tradition as a way to ring in the new year.Dang Hui from Luoyang, took her family for a hanfu family photoshoot.Instead of sitting indoors, they went to ancient style parks and temple fairs.
Some young people also get to know better and become interested in Spring Festival “traditions”, such as visiting temple fairs, flower markets and watching lion dancing.Meng Fan is spending the holidays with her family in Guangzhou and they plan to watch lion dancing, which combines martial arts, folk music and dance. The movements, mimicking lions climbing mountains, jumping across rivers and playing with each other, carry auspicious meanings such as overcoming difficulties and making achievements.

(2025·宁波高一检测)American consumers are projected to spend roughly $960 billion this holiday season. But retailers (零售商) expect returns to account for almost 20 percent of those sales. That return wave arises mainly because people tend to make a lot of mistakes when giving presents, says Julian Givi, a marketing expert and psychologist who has been studying gifting practices.
Giving good gifts may not seem like a research worthy topic. But positive gift exchanges can help businesses struggling to deal with amounts of returns as well as improve social relationships. Most importantly, giving better gifts could take pressure off the environment.By one estimate, in 2020, some 2.6 million tons of returned products in the United States wound up in a landfill.
Most of these studies were also done in the U.S.and U.K.The studies centered on the cultural factor. For instance, we often give the gifts around the holidays. But what we find is that recipients (接受者) actually prefer emotional gifts more than what givers anticipate. But if in a culture where you are going to get laughed at for giving an emotional gift, then I would say you won't give a similar gift. However, the limitation on this body of research work is that it's focused on adults. It's a lot easier to get approval to do research on people who are 18 and older.
Gift givers tend to focus on that “aha” moment, the moment when the ribbons and bow come off.Recipients focus more on long term functions.Research shows that people are misguided on how much surprise is important. However, recipients actually like things that they request better.
It had been assumed that gift givers were simply motivated by a desire to please recipients.Actually, people often give gifts that satisfy their own desires rather than the desires of recipients. In other words, people would be a whole lot better at giving gifts if they could just get their sense of their own worth out of the way. Therefore, a better gift giver should take what recipients really want into consideration.

读后续写评价标准之一是自然有效地使用了语句间、段落间衔接手段。这就意味着,续写部分不仅句与句之间合理通顺,也要做到段落之间的衔接。具体如下:
1.每段续写的第一个层次都要与所给段落首句相衔接;
2.续写第一段结尾与第二段首句相衔接;
(2)灵活运用that或this。
表转折 however、 still、 though、 yet、 while、 nevertheless、 but、 in fact等
表时间 then、 next、 finally、 throughout、 meanwhile、 soon、 before、 after a while、 later、 until then、 until、 immediately、 previously、 at once、 at this moment、 the instant等
表因果 as、 so that、 thereupon、 consequently、 thus、 because (of)、since、 due to、 thanks to、 as a result (of)、 in case、 in order to、 so as to、 on that account、 on account of、 owing to等
表条件 if、 provided that、 as long as、 supposing that、 on condition that、 unless、 given that等
表让步 though、 although、 even if/though、 nevertheless、 nonetheless、 whatever、 no matter what、 despite、in spite of、regardless of等

[1]The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma's farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
[2]The car engine wasn't off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake Was he still upset with me “I'm fine,” I answered. “I'm just missing my computer puters are something I'm good at.” “That sounds disappointing,” Grandma nodded.
[3]I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers' market.
[4]Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
[5]However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent (有能力的) computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn't mean you never make mistakes.”
[6]I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our Internet connection, but we just can't set it up,” Grandma asked. No Internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.

There are three things that make Sydney famous:its beautiful harbor, the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. But there are many more interesting things in Sydney: beautiful shops and restaurants. For example, rows of interesting old houses were built in the 19th century, and in summer or winter, day or night, Sydney is an outdoor city. Some Americans think it very British. Some British visitors think it is like America. There is some truth in both these opinions, because Sydney takes from both the Old World Europe and the New World America, which makes itself into something that is neither British nor American but truly Australian.

When it comes to big celebrations, like birthdays, many families have their own traditions they like to do each year—from special meals to decorating the house with balloons and flags. But one family do something a little different and it's proved very popular on social media.
A woman named Jenny Cimato has gone_viral on social media after sharing her family's unique birthday tradition.
In a video posted on social media, the mum explained that they call it the “Bag of No”. She says, “It started when my daughter was really young and she was asking for things in the checkout line at the grocery store. What I decided to do was once a year for her birthday I'd go and I'd get all those items that she had asked for, which I would normally say ‘no’ to and I'd put them in a bag for her birthday.”
“We call it the bag of no and it just turned into fun. She knew that I'd say no at that moment, but she knew she'd eventually get it for her birthday and you know it kind of takes the pain away when you say no in the store when she is little.”
Jenny continued, “Even though she's turning 17 this year and doesn't ask for things at the checkout line much anymore, she still asks like ‘the bag of no is still coming, right?’”
The mum then began to show off what she put in the most recent bag, including chocolate bars, sweets, potato chips, and a few unusual items like putty.

In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after World War Ⅱ.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness, Richard Burton, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras (交响乐团). It became a fixed event every August and now attracts about 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (the Fringe) appeared as a challenge to the official festival. Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947, believing that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house that had been abandoned (废弃的) for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from the University of Edinburgh, and later from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform plays by little known writers in small halls.
Today the Fringe, once less embraced, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of music, dance and theatre on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959, with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator (管理人员) was first employed only in 1971. Today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries. More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

As a child growing up in a suburban town in the northeast of the United States, the arrival of spring had little meaning for me. Sure, we had a week long spring vacation from school, but the key word there was vacation, not spring.
For the kids in my neighborhood, spring was a meaningless season. There were two important seasons: winter, when we could go skating and sledding or build snow forts, and summer, when we could finally make proper use of the beach about 100 meters east of my family home. Spring and autumn were just technical terms, weeks and weeks of waiting for the return of good times.
Admittedly, spring later developed its own attractions for me—“In spring a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love”, as the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson noted. However, it was not spring itself, but some other stuff that got my attention.
In short, I never thought much at all about spring and then I arrived in China. I had been in Beijing for about three months when my first Spring Festival rolled around, and it could hardly be ignored. What stood out most for me was that the capital seemed to be empty.
It was as though the crowds and streams of cars commonly seen in the capital had all gone into hiding. My puzzlement was cleared up when I returned to work. My colleagues explained that Chinese traditionally travel, if necessary, to visit their families during the Spring Festival, and that many Beijingers were not natives of the capital.
I also got my first knowledge of something about the Spring Festival that never ceases to amaze me. Regardless of when the holiday is set to begin, there is an almost immediate and sudden change for the better in the weather. Spring really does arrive.
I can't begin to figure out how the ancient Chinese could create a system that would almost always accurately predict when the season would shift year after year. But they did.

33.What impressed the author most about Beijing during the Spring Festival
A.The busy traffic.

D.The weather prediction system.

Dear_Peter,
I am delighted to know you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals.
The Double Ninth Festival is actually my favorite, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. Many activities respecting old people are held on this day. Besides, people often go hiking and admire flowers on this day. As for me, the reason why I like the festival is that it serves as a reminder that I should do something to show my appreciation for my elders' love.
I sincerely hope you can join me in celebrating the Double Ninth Festival. It must be a wonderful and memorable experience.
Yours,_
Li_Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It had been a busy day at Vineyards in Napa.As I was closing up I noticed a passport in the cash register drawer (收银柜).There was a note with it explaining that someone had found it in the women's restroom.
I had almost finished checking the register receipts (收据) when the phone rang.It was a woman named Christine who had left her passport behind. She was flying back to New York the next morning and needed her passport to board the plane.
Christine said she was meeting friends whom she hadn't seen for several years for dinner in San Francisco; she would drive all the way back up to Napa after dinner to get it back.
I could have left the passport under the front door mat, but I thought about what a bad way it would be for her to end her day after having such a great experience here in Napa. And then I asked, “Where are you staying in San Francisco I will send the passport to you in person.” After all, it would only be an hour round trip.
A few minutes later, I started my drive to San Francisco when my cell phone rang again. It was Christine, with her voice trembling, “I'm so sorry.I was involved in a car accident on the way to the hotel. No one's hurt, but the car's not drivable, and I can't even go to the hotel soon.” I asked her where she was. When she told me that she was at a local police office which was quite a distance from the hotel, and asked if I would leave her passport at the front desk of the hotel.I said, “Sure.”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
However, at the thought of Christine's trembling voice, I changed my mind.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One possible version:
However, at the thought of Christine's trembling voice, I changed my mind.My thoughts were filled with concern for her, along with the determination to take the passport to where she was, so I dialed her phone.Knowing my decision, the phone on the other side became silent and then she sounded so relieved, almost in disbelief, “You really would do that?” After all, it would be a two hour round trip.I reassured her with absolute certainty.Starting the engine and turning the steering wheel, I adjusted my route towards her.
When I arrived at the police station, a young woman waited outside.I instantly recognized her from the picture on the passport. On seeing me approaching, she ran up and hugged me, a mixture of surprise and gratitude washing over her face.“I can't tell you how much this means to me!” she said.I handed her passport with a smile. As I drove back, the scenery outside the car window was wonderful. The genuine warmth in her voice reminded me of the worthwhile drive and the acts of kindness, making my journey more meaningful.
