In 2013, I realised that I needed a break from the office work, so I set out travelling. But I had no idea how much the decision would change me for the rest of my life!
Before travelling, I was always worried about what other people think of me. How I looked and dressed was really important to me. I was always worried about putting on weight, getting darker, wondering if I was good-looking enough to socialise and be one of the people I used to hang out with. It doesn’t matter now. I’m more confident with my colour, my weight, and how I dress.
I used to compete a lot even when I was still a kid. I always wanted to impress people with how smart I was, how I could handle any task... But now, why should I feel like I need to compete I only need to impress myself. My life is already complete; I just have to make sure that whatever I do will be positive (积极的) and make me a better person.
I was a 24yearold Filipina with a successful career (事业) and had all of the things I could buy. But when I started travelling, I was no one. I have to learn a lot of things when travelling and I love it!
I thought the only skills I needed to improve were Microsoft Office and networking. Well I can now proudly say that I know how to fix beds in a hotel style, how to cook breakfast for a lot of guests, and how to work in a restaurant!
Besides the skills I’ve learned volunteering, I have completed several certifications (资格证) to start making money to support my new lifestyle. Until March 18, New York City is hosting the New York International Children’s Film Festival ( NYICFF). The festival presented films from 24 countries. 50% of the filmmakers are women.
Since February 23, when the festival began, viewers have been able to choose from more than 100 films at six theaters across the city. Although the event is considered as a children’s festival, the films set no rules as to who you are or where you come from.
Among the films presented at the festival, Zoo and Zombillenium are two impressive (给人印象深刻的) ones. Zoo is a British war film that shows the difference that a kid can make.
Tom is the protagonist (主角) of this heartwarming story. Tom’s dad is the owner of the Belfast Zoo. After he leaves to fight in the war, Tom has to save the zoo’s baby elephant, Buster, from being killed in the war.
“I loved it,” said 9-year-old Gabriel Bieller of New York City after seeing the film. “It really taught how kids could make a difference.”
Ella Hanson, 7, was also moved. “The sweet story of a kid like me making a difference when faced with difficulties caused by a war,” she said, “was very encouraging.”
Zombillenium is an animated (动画的) French film about working hard to achieve your dreams. Hector Saxe is the immediately dislikeable protagonist. His management job is all about rules. But after he starts working at the amusement park (游乐园) that he hates, he puts all of his love into getting it ready for his daughter to visit.
The film had many positive reactions (反响) from the audience. “The story presented great, lifelike characters,” said Sami Ali, 12.
Oliver, 10, who did not provide a last name, said, “It was rather sad, but it underlined the importance of never letting go of the things that you care about.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has greatly sped up how long it takes to sort, label and analyze (分析) animal sounds — as well as to figure out which aspects of those sounds might carry meaning. One day we’ll be able to use AI to build a chat box that translates complex (复杂的) animal sounds into human language. Project CETI is just one organization working toward this goal.
“AI could eventually get us to the point where we understand animals, but that’s hard to deal with and long-term,” says Karen Bakker, a researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. “Some species have been on the planet longer than humans. Some species could go extinct before we figure out their language,” Bakker adds. “Besides, the idea of walking around with an animal translator may seem cool, but many animals might not be interested in chatting.”
“Why would a bat want to speak to you ” she asks. What interests her is what we can learn from how bats and other creatures talk amongst each other. “We should listen to nature and ask the animals’ requirements in order to better protect them,” she argues. For example, a system set up to record whales or elephants can also track their locations. This can help our boats avoid whales or protect elephants from poachers (偷猎者).
Protection is one goal driving Project CETI. “If we understand sperm whales better, we will be better at understanding what’s troubling them,” says Ga per Begu , a linguist at the University of California, Berkeley. Learning that a species has something very similar to language or culture could also inspire people to work harder to protect it.
When we protect an animal that has some version of language or culture, we’re not simply protecting nature and we’re also saving a way of life. Marine biologist Denise Herzing says that animals are supposed to have a healthy environment so that their cultures can develop well.
