Although I’m not a music major, I brought my beloved violin to the United States during this study abroad semester. This violin could not be kept apart from my life.
When I was six years old, I was one of the typical kids who started to learn musical instruments. Parents would hear their young kids shouting, “Mom! I want to learn the piano! Dad! I want to learn the violin!” Well, the difference is, for me, that it was not my free will. Yes, my mom just forced me to play the violin. In the violin school, you could hear the kids crying in the practice room after being scolded by their moms. I was one of them. At the time, I hated the violin. However, I started to love the violin when my mom stopped focusing on my relationship with the violin in high school, because her attention naturally changed to my school performance. Maybe she didn’t have enough energy to force me to practice anymore.
When I finally got into college, the first thing I did was to register for the campus orchestra. I didn’t want to stop playing the violin. The orchestra helped me get involved in such a harmonious, friendly group for the first time while I was playing an instrument. It was my first time meeting friends who have similar hobbies, passion and dreams. I can’t forget my first classical concert. I was feeling true love toward the orchestra and the violin. I was extremely excited and I couldn’t wait for the next concert. The time just passed as a blink. Two hours felt like 10 minutes.
For everyone, it’s never too late to learn to play an instrument. It is really one of the best ways to express one’s emotions and communicate it to other people, and I have grown my emotions while being a part of an orchestra.

Zhang Xue is a key figure in China’s motorcycle industry. He founded ZXMOTO, a Chinese motorcycle brand that made history in 2026 by winning two straight races at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portugal. His journey is a true underdog story.
Born in 1987 in a poor mountain village in Hunan Province, Zhang dropped out of school at 14 and worked as a repair shop apprentice. He learned engines by taking them apart with his own hands. At 19, eager to prove himself, he chased a TV crew’s car for over 100 kilometers through pouring rain on a broken motorcycle. The crew laughed at him, but his courage earned him a spot on TV. That led to a job as a rider and mechanic.
Realizing he started racing too late to become a champion rider, Zhang changed his goal, “If I cannot ride the fastest bike, I will build one.” In 2013, he arrived in Chongqing with only 20,000 yuan (about 2,900 USD), bought parts, and built his first bike. In 2017 he cofounded Kove Moto, which grew into a major brand. But in 2024, after parting ways with Kove, he started ZXMOTO — his own company, named after his name.
Zhang’s years of devotion to motorcycle engineering has finally borne fruit. In March 2026, French rider Valentin Debise rode the ZXMOTO 820RRRS to two straight wins at WSBK, beating Ducati and Yamaha by nearly four seconds — the first ever race wins for a Chinese manufacturer. Watching from the sidelines, Zhang was moved to tears.
Today, ZXMOTO is valued at over one billion yuan. Zhang once said, “The world had no impression of Chinese motorcycles. Now they will remember us.” His story — from a motorcycle apprentice to a pioneer of Chinese motorsports — proves that passion and persistence can move mountains.

Polluted air is bad for your lungs but that dirty air might also be why many kids need glasses. Kids have better eyesight when air pollution levels are lower, scientists found.
The researchers focused on myopia, also known as nearsightedness. It’s a really big problem in East Asia. In China, for instance, more than four in every five teens are nearsighted by the time they finish high school. One in 10 are severely myopic.
Many things have long been known to contribute to someone becoming nearsighted, like genetics, daily habits and diet. “But this new study establishes the link between air pollution and nearsightedness in children,” notes Zongbo Shi, a scientist from the University of Birmingham.
His team used data from 29,971 elementary, middle and high school students in Tianjin, China. This survey asked kids or their families about the kids’ age, sex, health history, family background and habits, including how much the kids slept, what they ate, their school environment and more. Shi’s team also gathered environmental data for Tianjin, including air pollution levels, green space and nighttime lighting.
Data show that elementary-school-age children are especially sensitive to air pollution. “It is possible that pollution causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the retina (视网膜), which is the layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye,” says Paul Foster, an ophthalmologist at University College London in England. This may lead to a greater risk of children becoming myopic.
The study has limitations, too. For example, it relied on self-reported data, which is not always accurate. The researchers also defined pollution exposure using data collected near the kids’ schools. This approach isn’t perfect because kids don’t spend their entire day at school, much less weekends. However, it suggests one possible option for improving children’s eye health. For kids everywhere, cleaner air could mean better vision, too.
