When people in Europe look up at the sky, they sometimes see yellow dust clouds (沙尘云). That’s because dust storms from the Sahara Desert (沙漠) travel thousands of kilometers to Europe. More than half of the world’s dust comes from the Sahara, the world’s largest desert. Under hot, dry, and windy conditions, particles (颗粒) in the air move across many places, including Europe.
As the weather gets warmer, the soil (土壤) becomes drier, making it easier for the wind to blow the dust away. Scientists say that if things stay the same, the Saharan dust in the air could rise by 40 to 60% in 50 years.
In Europe, the dust affects more than just the sky. Saharan dust can make the air worse and increase fine particles called PM10. These particles can go deep into our bodies and cause health problems. In Spain and Italy, Saharan dust might be one of the reasons for up to 44% of deaths (死亡) caused by PM10.
The dust also causes other problems. When it falls on the snow in the Alps, it makes the snow darker. As a result, it melts (融化) faster. The dust can also cause problems for planes and cars by making it harder to see. To work out the problem, people are trying their best to do something.

In Spain, children and their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. It is called “bicibús” or bike bus.
This autumn, children in Barcelona have a new way to get to school on Fridays—they ride their bikes. In September, a group of five children started biking to school with their parents on Fridays. Soon the group grew to 150 or more. The bike bus starts around 8:25 every Friday morning. The road it will follow is always posted before starting, so everyone knows where to join.
The bicibús doesn’t ride in bike lanes (道) or on sidewalks. It takes over all the streets. And because more and more cycling and skating kids join in it, the police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibús and behind it. Parents are happy because that means their children will get to school safely (安全地).
With music playing and bike bells (铃声) ringing, the bicibús feels like a party. “The best part of the bicibús is that we ride along and pick up our friends and we ride together,” nine-year-old Maria Pitarch says.
Before the bicibús program (项目), it wasn’t safe for kids to go to school by bike. The bike lanes are not wide and the traffic is busy. When people in Europe look up at the sky, they sometimes see yellow dust clouds (沙尘云). That’s because dust storms from the Sahara Desert (沙漠) travel thousands of kilometers to Europe. As the weather gets warmer, the soil (土壤) becomes drier, making it easier for the wind to blow the dust away. Scientists say that if things stay the same, the Saharan dust in the air could rise by 40 to 60% in 50 years.
In Europe, the dust affects more than just the sky. Saharan dust can make the air worse and increase fine particles called PM10. These particles can go deep into our bodies and cause health problems. In Spain, children and their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. It is called “bicibús” or bike bus.
This autumn, children in Barcelona have a new way to get to school on Fridays—they ride their bikes. In September, a group of five children started biking to school with their parents on Fridays.
