【改编自北师大选必三U7】
Up until the 1980s, people in many countries regularly followed in their parents' footsteps by working in the family business or joining the same profession as them. You'd follow your father to sea, onto the farm or into the workshop. You'd follow your mother into the kitchen or sewing room.In your grandparents' time, there was the prospect of doing the same job from graduation until retirement. How times have changed! Most people now have no intention of following in their parents' footsteps or even staying at one job for very long.
In fact, planning to work in the same field or industry for your entire working life just isn't practical anymore. One reason for this is technology. The skills you have now are unlikely to remain relevant and be enough to help you through your entire career. In fact, they will probably be out of date very soon. And then what will you do Work hard Win the lottery Hope for the best You might be lucky. These strategies might bring you a nice, comfortable life: working at a job you like, earning a decent salary and retiring while you're still young and healthy. But most of us today have to look beyond the little box called “career”.
If you think you can work eight hours a day and build a career, think again. You might be able to keep your job if you finish what you are asked to do, but this is hardly a recipe for great career success.Instead, you'd better keep looking for smarter ways to do your work. You'll need to be a risk taker, an innovator, a problem solver, and a hard worker. Keep doing this, and you can become an expert or a specialist in something one day.You have a chance to choose to build a career, rather than being told to stay or to go.
Jobs and occupations come and go at an amazing pace these days.If you think you can't be replaced by software, or your job can't be outsourced to some robots on the moon, you are wrong. What if your job disappears after working for 10 years in the field You may have to go back to the classroom and be retrained in order to qualify to work in another field. In fact, in all likelihood, you will have to do this multiple times. But you can be prepared for developments and changes before you are thrown out of a career. It is entirely your choice to learn, or to be forced to learn.
1.What is one reason why working in the same field for an entire career is not practical anymore
A.Lack of job opportunities.
B.Low salaries.
C.Technological changes.
D.Long working hours.
2.What does the underlined word“outsourced”mean in paragraph 4
A. Hire from within.
B.Send work to an external source.
C.Train employees.
D.Promote internally.
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.People in the past had more career choices than people today.
B.Technology has made it easier to build a successful career.
C.Being an innovator is the only way to achieve career success.
D.People today need to be more adaptable to changes in the job market.
4.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The importance of following in parents' footsteps.
B.The challenges of building a career in modern times.
C.The benefits of working in the same field for a lifetime.
D.The drawbacks of technology in the workplace.
答案:1~4.CBDB

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·德阳开学考试)Exploring China is not easy even for experienced travelers, but the history instructor Jessica Gerard from Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) knows from experience the trip is worth it. Since 2008, she's led five groups of students across China to study its glorious culture and history.
Gerard often reminds interested students that the trip is not a vacation—it's an academic course. “Anyone interested in the trip must take an online course on the history of China prior to their trip,” she said. “And, most importantly, students continue to learn while in China. They're expected to listen to guides, keep a diary and write about their experiences afterward.”
OTC student Ross Weis believed his experiences in China easily surpassed (超过) anything he could have learned in the classroom. In fact, it was his long-held interest in China that led him to ask about the trip after seeing a poster in the OTC library. “I've always been drawn to China and its rich culture and history,” Weis said. “My dad studied history in college, and I suppose that has some influence on me.”
Of all the cities and historic sites Weis visited, he said nothing could top his experience at the Great Wall. “I'd read about the Great Wall and seen it on TV, but it is so different to go there and actually experience it,” he said. “It wasn't as worn as I had expected it to be. That was pretty cool.”
Every OTC group Gerard has taken to China has been led by her trusty tourist agent, Jim Lieu. Gerard plans her trips directly through Lieu, who keeps travel costs down for students. “Lieu and I have an excellent relationship with one another. He always knows what I want for my students, and I know what he can do,” said Gerard. “He sincerely believes that in order to build stronger communities and a better world, people around the world should get to know each other and strengthen their understanding through travel.”

Do you love fossils and dinosaurs I'm lucky enough to be a fossil preparator (化石制备师), which means I work with fossils, like removing rocks from fossils and gluing fossils together to make sure they're not broken.Sometimes, we have dinosaur bones that need to be arranged and put back into place.
I like the job from the bottom of my heart. When we make “jackets”—these are things that store the fossils—we have to accurately and scientifically figure out how to make them for specific bones or fossils, which can be different shapes and artistic expression.
Since I was a kid, it's been my dream to be a paleontologist (古生物学者).When I was 12, I went to this kind of event at the Houston Museum of Natural Science called Dinosaur Day.I got a chance to meet paleontologists. At the end, I asked, “Hey, can I volunteer?” And somehow, they let me, as long as a parent came with me.At 12 years old, I got to go to a fossil excavation (挖掘), and I got to work with dinosaur bones and fossils in the lab for the first time.
Fossils are very old.We don't always get all the pieces. We're working with something that's incomplete, sometimes. We do our best to fit the pieces we know back together. And as for the pieces we don't know, we don't try to make anything up.But sometimes, we have a gap in a specimen (标本) and it needs support. We'll put some material in there that's clearly not fossil, so when people go to study it, they know not to study that part.
People would wonder how I find other kids, especially girls, who shared my interests when I was growing up.As a matter of fact, in my friend group, I was the only dinosaur girl.My friends were interested in other things, but they were all super supportive of my love for fossils.

Late one night in July 2020 in Reykjavik, Haraldur(Halli) Thorleifsson was wandering around the city's main shopping street with his wife and two kids. During their walk, his three-year-old son was thirsty and wanted a drink from the corner store. But Thorleifsson soon discovered he couldn't help with the simple request: A 20-centimetre step blocked his access to the store.
The barrier was all too familiar.Born with muscular dystrophy, which causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle, Thorleifsson has been using a wheelchair since he was 25.As he waited outside, he recalled, “I thought about how strange it is that we separate families in this way.I thought about all the times I wasn't able to join my friends at restaurants, pubs and stores that are inaccessible.”
Living all over the world as a creative director and digital designer in cities such as San Francisco and Tokyo, Thorleifsson had witnessed first-hand how different cities consider and plan for accessibility, from ramps (斜坡) and sidewalks to public transportation.
Having recently sold his digital creative agency, Thorleifsson now had the financial means to make a difference in his hometown. He decided to start with a project to make Iceland wheelchair accessible, one ramp at a time.
Ramp Up Reykjavik was launched as a non-profit in 2021 with a goal to build 100 ramps, mostly in the city's downtown, within a year.Unlike portable and temporary solutions in other cities, these ramps are permanent structures that match the aesthetic of the buildings, making them appear as if they've always been there. It's a design detail that helps provide a sense of inclusivity.
With the help of government funding and other sponsors, the Ramp Up team finished ahead of schedule and has broadened its scope to all of Iceland, with the goal of building 1,500 ramps countrywide by next year.

The robots are coming! In science fiction that is usually a terrible warning.Even if we know robots are not literally the murderous machines of films in which the inventor loses control of his creation, they can inspire fear.In the real world, they are able to kill off well-paid jobs in factories and warehouses.Nevertheless, the latest advances in robotics will bring real and fundamental benefits.
New “multimodal” AI models combine understanding of language and vision with data. This makes it possible to deal with robots using ordinary words. You can ask a robot what it is able to see or tell it to “pick up the yellow fruit”.Such models in effect allow robots a degree of common sense—in this case, knowing that a nearby banana is a kind of yellow fruit. You can tell a robot to adjust its behaviour simply by changing an instruction, something that would previously have required complicated reprogramming.
The new models enable robots to explain the reasoning behind their actions. That is useful when they behave in unexpected or unwelcome ways.So long as robots' brains are not confusing black boxes, programming and debugging (排错) them is fairly straightforward. The new models are also less likely to make things up, as the way they perceive things is rooted in observations of the world, and they aim to ensure that cognitive and physical reality match.
Labour markets across the rich world are tight—and getting tighter as societies age.Advanced economies will need more automation if they are to maintain their standards of living as they are aging rapidly.Without robots to help out, more people may have to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, attitudes could well change from fearing the arrival of robots to wishing that they would get here sooner.

Boys grow up to be engineers and computer scientists. Girls become nurses and teachers. That seems like an out-of-date notion (观念) in a world where many students are encouraged to explore a wide range of careers. But the stereotypes (刻板印象) continue.
Aptitude tests, which seek to measure students' potential in a particular field, may be one way to help students decide their career paths.
To understand how these tools may lead a particular student toward a field they may not have considered—or even heard of—researchers at the University of Missouri conducted an independent review. The study compared 7,222 high school students' natural aptitudes with their self-reported interests in four areas: manufacturing (制造业), computer technology, construction, and healthcare. For healthcare, the study looked at both a student's capacity and interest in direct patient care jobs and more technical jobs in the healthcare industry. The study included 3,619 females and 3,603 males.
“If you just look at people's interest scores, they fall into areas which I call what they are exposed to, what they can see based on their life experiences. Many young people are exposed to very little,” said Richard Feller, a professor at Colorado State University who worked on the study. Students' different life experiences create an exposure gap, he said, that aptitude tests can help bridge.
The study found that more than four times as many girls were found to have potential in manufacturing, more than seven times more in construction and technical healthcare fields, and two times more in computer technology than an interest list alone would show. What's more, males were more than 1.6 times more likely to show promise in patient care positions.
“It opens up all kinds of opportunities for students who have been less fortunate and have been stereotyped,” Feller said. “We've got great potential that we're not tapping into.”

How Body Language Can Help Your Career
Many businessmen often underestimate the importance of nonverbal communication—which is often half the message. 36.__________Imagine how much more effective your next meeting with your boss could be if only you give your nonverbal communication a little attention. These four tips can help you avoid that common mistake so you can use your body language to gain an advantage in your career.
Triple Nod to Show You're Engaged
37.__________One way you can do this non-verbally is to use the triple head nod. Three quick, small nods in a row is the nonverbal sign for “tell me more” or “I hear you, explain.” It is a great way to show that you are interested and involved.
Don't Underestimate the Power of the Hands
Our hands speak volumes about who we are. Our brain pays attention to hands more than any other body part because we have evolved to look at them as a safety tool to make sure people won't attack us. Whenever you have meetings, keep your hands above the table. 38.________
Stop Using Nervous Behaviors
Learn to stop displaying nervous body language so you don't risk appearing anxious or incompetent. The most common behaviors are: wringing hands, rubbing arms, biting lips. 39.__________Ask a friend to tell you if he/she notices you're displaying any of the above behaviors. Once you know what they are, you can take actions to stop them.
Mirror Other People
Professionals who mirror clients' body language are more successful than those who don't. If you're a fast-talker, slowing down your speech to match the person you're talking to helps put you on the same level. 40.__________Copying someone's closed off body language or negative tone will only increase the tension between you.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My little sister, Meg, said that she wasn't afraid of the dark anymore and she'd be OK staying with Aunt Lily in the country.“As long as you're there, Mike,” she had said.Still, Mum was worried. Meg had never slept away from home, away from the city. So I told Mum I could handle everything.
Even though we were only staying overnight, Meg had brought six books—all about fairies (仙子).After we unpacked, Aunt Lily invited us to pick some flowers. As we followed her through the forest, Meg held my hand tightly. But once we reached the sunlit grassland, she let go.“Butterflies!” whispered Meg.She screamed with delight when one flew near her.
Maybe I had nothing to worry about, I thought. I still remembered when I was here last summer, I found some amazing insects, like fireflies (萤火虫), which I'd never seen in the city.
“Fairies are magical.See these beautiful flowers they grow!” she kept telling absolutely everything she knew about fairies. I was glad that if she kept it up until bedtime, then maybe she'd fall asleep right away.
Meg did keep chatting, right through supper. Then the sun began to set.“Does it get really dark out here at night?” she asked. Her eyes were fixed on the window.
“Sure, but we've got plenty of lights inside,” said Aunt Lily. She leaned over and gave Meg a warm smile. But I could tell she was still worried.“I could read to you.”
I hadn't even finished a page when her bottom lip started shaking slightly.“Mike,” she said, her eyes starting to fill with tears.“I want to go home.” I quickly searched through her book for something to keep her from crying.
The book fell open to a page that was dog-eared from use, a page that was obviously one of Meg's favorites. The text read:“Among the trees deep in the forest, the lights of fairies gleam (闪烁).”Aha!How could I forget those “tiny fairies” out there

One possible version:
“Meg, there's something outside I want to show you,”I whispered. Meg quickly covered her eyes with her hands and refused. “Come to the window, OK It's something you will like,” I promised. When we finally reached the window, I quietly switched off the lamp. Outside, thick chunks of trees reached up into black clouds of leaves and fireflies hovered around like twinkling stars.
“Tiny fairies, Mike!” she said, pressing her forehead against the window. “Everywhere!” They weren't fairies, of course. I wanted to tell Meg about these incredible insects that flashed in the dark. Then I looked down into Meg's shining eyes, and I decided she could learn about fireflies some other time. Meg was so absorbed in the breathtaking scene that she completely forgot her fear of darkness and soon fell asleep against my shoulder. I guessed it turned out that I could handle everything—with a little help from the magical fairies.Period 3 Writing

My Career Plan
When it comes to my career in the future, I hope I will be a journalist which I was fond of from an early age.
I want to choose it as my career for two reasons. First, the job which can let me know new things every day keeps me energetic and passionate all the time, since I hate to follow the same routine every day. Second, working as a journalist can help me realize my childhood dream of being a hero of spreading love to others.
To achieve this goal, I plan to study hard to be admitted to a key university, broadening my horizons to fit the job.

Breaking Point—Is the World Ready for Bigger Waves
Adapted from The Guardian Weekly
Waves are a vital part of the ocean system, helping to control the rate at which the ocean absorbs heat and carbon dioxide and shape and sustain coastlines. And as ocean temperatures rise and weather patterns shift, they are changing, in some oceans growing bigger and more powerful.
This has frightening implications for coastlines and the coastal communities that bear the ocean's fury. But if harnessed effectively, waves and the energy they transmit may play a part in tackling the climate crisis.
The waves we see on the ocean's surface are mostly wind waves. Because wind pressure is never uniform, it creates tiny changes in the water's surface. As they move across the ocean's surface, these small changes interact and combine, first forming ripples, then longer and larger waves. Out on the open ocean, where powerful winds can blow on the water for hundreds or even thousands of kilometres without interruption, these eventually become the massive swells that crash onto shores in higher latitudes.
Waves can also be created by seismic events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The waves created by these events can be immense. Or the ocean itself can cause waves. The ocean is classified into distinct layers of different temperature and salinity, and just as waves form on the interface between the water and the air, the outflow of fresh water from rivers and glaciers or tidal forces can send waves rippling along the boundaries between these layers. Another is the gravity of the moon and sun that rolls around the planet, which create daily motion of the tides. These processes play an important part in ocean mixing, helping to transport denser, cooler water from the ocean's depths towards the surface and to transfer nutrients and carbon from the sunlit upper layers into deeper water.
While many scientists are concerned about the potential destruction and disruption of larger and more violent waves, others believe its role in tackling the climate crisis.

美国南北战争时期,一个普通家庭的四个姐妹的成长之路。
Laurie lay luxuriously① swinging② to and fro (来回地) in his hammock (吊床) one warm September afternoon, wondering what③ his neighbors were about, but too lazy to④ go and find out. He was in one of his moods, for the day had been both unprofitable (没好处的) and unsatisfactory, and he was wishing he could live it over again.
The hot weather made him lazy, and he had avoided his studies, tried Mr. Brooke's patience to the utmost⑤, displeased⑥ his grandfather by frightening the maid and after high words⑦ with the stableman (马夫) about neglect⑧ of his horse, he had thrown himself into his hammock to be angry about himself.
Then he heard the sound of voices. Peeping⑨ through the meshes (网) of the hammock, he saw the Marches⑩ coming out, as if on some expedition .
“What in the world are those girls about now?” thought Laurie, opening his sleepy eyes to take a good look, for there was something rather peculiar in the appearance of his neighbors. Each wore a large hat. Meg had a cushion , Jo a book, Beth a basket, and Amy a portfolio (画本). All walked quietly through the garden, out at the little back gate, and began to climb the hill that lay between the house and river.
“Well, that's cool,” said Laurie to himself, “to have a picnic and never ask me! I'll follow them, and see what's going on.”
Possessing of half a dozen hats, it took him some time to find one. Then there was a hunt for the key, which was at last discovered in his pocket. The girls were quite out of sight when he leaped the fence and ran after them.
Taking the shortest way to the boathouse, he first waited for them to appear, but no one came. Then he went up the hill to take an observation . Laurie peeped through the bushes, and spotted the sisters sat together, with sun and shadow flickering (闪烁) over them , the wind lifting their hair and cooling their hot cheeks.
Meg sat upon her cushion, sewing gracefully with her white hands, and looking as fresh and sweet as a rose in her pink dress among the green. Beth was sorting the pine cones (松果), for she made pretty things with them. Amy was sketching a group of ferns (蕨类), and Jo was knitting as she read aloud.
A shadow passed over the boy's face as he watched them, feeling that he ought to go away because uninvited , yet lingering because home seemed very lonely and this quiet party in the woods most attractive to his restless spirit. He stood so still that a squirrel (松鼠), busy with its harvesting (收获), ran down a pine close beside him.
But the squirrel saw him suddenly and skipped back. Beth looked up, found the face behind the trees, and signaled with a comforting smile.
“May I come in, please Or shall I be a bother?” he asked, advancing slowly.
Meg lifted her eyebrows , but Jo glared at him and said at once, “Of course you may. We should have asked you before, only we thought you wouldn't care for such a girl's game as this.”
“I always like your games, but if Meg doesn't want me, I'll go away.”
“I've no objection , if you do something. It's against the rules to be idle here,” replied Meg gravely but graciously (和蔼地).
“I'll do anything if you'll let me stay, for it's as dull as the Desert of Sahara (撒哈拉沙漠) down there.” Laurie sat down with a submissive expression.
“Finish this story while I set my heel ,” said Jo, handing him the book.
“Yes!” was the meek (温顺的) answer, as he began, doing his best to prove his gratitude for the favor of admission into the “Busy Bee Society”.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025 ·广州执信中学高二期中)17-year-old Ava Dorsey is the founder of Ava's Pet Palace, a business that sells organic dog and cat treats. “I actually had the idea when I was six with a picture I drew of a palace,” she says. It was a detailed design for dogs and cats and she had serious plans to build it one day.
Unlike most dog treats that you find in stores, dog treats sold by Ava's Pet Palace are 100% organic, and are non-GMO(非转基因). Ava has set a goal for herself with these dog treats, and she wants every treat to be healthy, tasty, and top-quality. Seriously, some of her treats sound delicious enough for people to eat! “All of my bags now have the USDA organic label, and we're very excited to have gotten it because it's something I've wanted for a long time,” she says. “A lot of stores like to see organic products because customers like them, so that was really exciting.”
Ava says the biggest challenge of being a kid in business is when people don't take her seriously, but undoubtedly Ava has proved that her doubters are wrong! When asked how she defines success, Ava says, “When you hit a bump in the road, you shouldn't give up and you keep trying.” She learned that from her mom, who sounds like a smart lady! Ava has learned some more things from her years in business: Hard work eventually pays off and there is nothing wrong with asking for help.
As far as the future of the pet treats industry goes, Ava is optimistic—but she'd also like to be an inspiration for change. “There's not much diversity right now, so that's something I would love to see in the future,” says Ava. “I would also love to see more kids in this industry. There aren't many other teenagers around, and I hope that I can be an inspiration to others who hope to lead the pet industry.”

(2025·池州一中期末)A lot of businesses are started by people who have hobbies or special talents and want to turn these interests into a business. But switching from a hobby to a real business requires business know-how and investments, which stops many people. However,an increasing number of ambitious business owners have found a way to take a first step. They are taking their dreams and talents on the road—in vans (小货车) and lorries, and even horse trucks.
Beginning on a small scale has its advantages, the most important of which is the relatively modest size of start-up costs. These costs, which consist primarily of the vehicle and any required equipment, usually come to about only £5,000-£10,000.With such tightly controlled costs, mobile businesses often break even in a year or two; in contrast, success comes to brick-and-mortar businesses much more slowly, and they often fail within the first two years. In short, mobile businesses are relatively low-risk.
The first enterprisers to do this have been in the food business. The mobile food vendor (小贩) trend in the US and Europe has spread to other parts of the globe. The success of these street food vans has inspired other enterprisers to consider starting out on wheels.
UK enterprisers could take inspiration from the US where, today, there are vehicles that sell flowers, shoes, clothes and all kinds of specialty food items. There are also mobile businesses that provide services, such as hair styling, pet grooming and repair of high-tech devices.Mobile retail (零售) is not without problems, however.Weather, the increasing price of fuel, and just finding a place to set up are all challenges that mobile enterprisers have to deal with. These business owners, however, feel the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. In the US, the mobile food business alone generates an average annual income of $857 million.
Once convinced that their business has achieved enough success, some successful mobile enterprisers move on to a brick-and-mortar business.Others are satisfied to stay mobile. As stand-alone businesses or as extensions of shops, mobile retail has huge future potential in these economic times.

When starting my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the age when my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me. But then I learned before getting deeper, it can crack (变嘶哑).
The first time it happened I was so embarrassed. Surprisingly, my friends didn't make fun of me. In fact, they didn't even mention it. But in my self-conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they made fun of me behind my back. They didn't have the same problem.
After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn't happen again. At least not in public. So, except for necessary times I said “cool” and “yeah”, I didn't talk. My logic was, “If I don't use my voice, it cannot crack.” However, I couldn't go without talking forever. I needed a new solution.
I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my throat made me much less stressed. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was much more scared of having a crack in my voice during class. My class had many new kids I'd never spoken with. I didn't want their first impressions of me to be based on a crack.
Unfortunately, one day my concern became a reality. It was about two months after the beginning of the term. On the day it happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. My permanent teacher never had to, since he already knew each student. I panicked. So many thoughts ran through my mind that I couldn't think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word “Here”. “Easy enough, right?” I thought so until my name was called. I did my routine—cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here.” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst crack in my voice.

The whole class turned to look at me. I felt my face turning red and wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole. The embarrassment was unbearable, and I couldn't even bring myself to meet anyone's gaze. After what seemed like an eternity, the substitute teacher finally spoke up, breaking the awkward silence. He chuckled and said, “Well, that's quite a lovely young voice!” The class laughed pleasantly along with him, and I managed a weak smile, wondering whether they were just trying to make me feel better. Finally, the bell rang and I rushed out to have some fresh air.
“You know, the voice problem you encountered in class is normal, ” a classmate came to me and said. “Everyone goes through it. It happens to most of us during this stage of life.” He explained how he had also experienced the same thing and how he had learned to embrace it as a natural part of growing up. I looked at him in surprise, grateful for his comforting words. My initial embarrassment and concern gave way to gratitude and confidence. My classmates were understanding and supportive, just as my friends had been from the beginning. With their encouragement, I gradually became more confident about using my voice, accepting the changes that came with adolescence without fear or shame.INCLUDEPICTURE "读后续写1LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "读后续写1LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT

[1]William Dunn grew up in Miami in a rough area. His dad ran a lobster business in the Florida Keys, and William helped with it. He and his dad had a great relationship. Fishing was a huge part of that. “Fishing was so peaceful,” William says. “It was like an escape.”
[2]After graduating from a college in town, William married his girlfriend Lily, his college classmate and settled in Lakeland, Florida. They had a happy family and raised two lovely kids. Amy, an eight-year-old, always wore a smile while talking, while Ted, aged 5, loved getting into trouble at home.
[3]During the week, William worked as a tire salesman. On weekends, he would take his family to fish in a lake nearby. The kids always enjoyed the happy time on the water, casting their lines into the shining lake as the sun dipped low on the horizon. They laughed and chatted excitedly. Each tug on the line brought a burst of anticipation, and when they finally reeled in (拉回) their catch, their faces lit up with pride and joy. Between fishing, they paddled around in a small boat, dipping their hands into the cool water and marveling at the tiny fish beneath the surface. The day was filled with the simple pleasures of nature, creating memories they would cherish for years to come.
[4]The neighborhood was friendly, houses neatly arranged with a checkerboard of green lawns. Everyone was willing to lend a hand when someone was in need. (2016·全国卷Ⅱ阅读)A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.
Frank Hurley's pictures would be outstanding—undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism①—if they had been made last week. [In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck (海难), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival]②. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.
The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master (三桅船) that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica's Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled (雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done.③ Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.
As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott's last journey, completed as he lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world's imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.④ INCLUDEPICTURE "手LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "手LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMAT 背铺灰语料,积续写基石

维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自外研选必四U1】
For many of us, it's something we already have experienced. One moment, we are lying comfortably in bed, about to fall into a deep sleep. The next, our eyes are open and we find ourselves wondering or even worrying about possibly the most important issue of our lives—the future. Will we get into the school of our choice What will we be doing in ten years' time Can we become the person we really want to be In the face of such questions, how should we approach the future Can we take action to shape it, or should we just accept whatever comes our way
As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality. In this respect, some people are more fortunate than others, as can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors, born 40 years apart. Although they shared the same ambitious and energetic approach to life, their careers unfolded in contrasting ways.
The American author, Ernest Hemingway, born in 1899, was from early boyhood single-minded in his ambition to write. On leaving high school, he joined a local Kansas newspaper as a trainee reporter. He went on to become foreign correspondent for the Toronto Star and used his extraordinary experiences in Europe and later Cuba to inform his writing. In his words, “I decided that I would write one story about each thing that I knew about.” Having set himself this goal, he wrote novels and short stories based on his personal experiences of the First World War, the Spanish Civil War, bullfighting and deep-sea fishing, amongst others. His novel The Old Man and the Sea, about the three-day epic struggle between an elderly fisherman and the biggest fish he had ever caught, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. He would later go on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
By contrast, the young Arthur Conan Doyle, born in Scotland in 1859, had originally worked as a doctor. But Doyle's main ambition was to become a writer of historical novels. Although some of his historical novels were published, their success was nothing compared to the stories of his fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, which he is still best known for to this day.
1.What did Ernest Hemingway do after leaving high school
A.He became a famous writer.
B.He worked as a doctor.
C.He joined a local newspaper as a trainee reporter.
D.He wrote historical novels.
2.What does the underlined word “epic” mean in paragraph 3

C.Grand. D.Boring.
3.What was Arthur Conan Doyle's main ambition
A.A doctor.

4.What can we infer from the passage

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·天津高二下学期期末)My name's Martin Cabello. As a young photographer, I've been fond of taking photographs since I was a child. At the age of 15, I felt that if I wanted to take my hobby to the next level, I had to do something special. So I determined to start a personal project: I would take one photograph every day for a whole year of my life. I knew that many other young photographers had done the same thing before, but it seemed like a really great idea, and so I started.
After a few weeks, I decided to put these photos onto a website for young photographers because I was keen to create a photo diary, and also to have the chance to show other people my photos. I was amazed to discover that there were others who liked the way I saw and photographed things. I was also enjoying photographing a wide range of subjects. Then someone suggested that if my photographs all had a common topic or idea to connect them, my project would be even better—and I agreed.
So I began to concentrate more on taking photos of nature scenes, especially birds and the sky. A lot of them were black and white photographs, which was very different to what many other young photographers were doing—they were all taking colour photos. As a result, I sometimes had doubts about my project, and I almost gave up several times. In the end, however, I trusted my own feelings, and became more confident about my photographic style and choices.
One day I showed my project to my art teacher at school. She told me about a national photography competition for people of my age. So I entered some of my photos, just for fun. I'll never forget the moment when the judges told me that I had won first prize. I was so happy, as my project meant so much to me. It was the first time I had realised that maybe my photography was really good, and that I might actually be able to work as a professional photographer. I now have my own photography studio and I've never regretted my career choice.

(2025·丽水期末)Different people have different ambitions in life such as doctors. For as long as I can remember I always had an affection for teaching people something. From my childhood, I taught others whatever I learned in school. It started with helping someone trying to tie their shoelaces or making my younger siblings remember alphabets through a sing-song rhythm. This profession will enable me to make humble contributions to the building of my nation by instilling the spirit of nationalism and patriotism in my students. The sense of accomplishment I used to feel when the other person ultimately learned whatever from me was indescribable.
The main reason why I always want to teach is that firstly I think teaching comes naturally to me and secondly, I always have the utmost respect for my teacher, who knows my strengths and weaknesses more than I do. According to Plato, education is the turning of the inner eye towards the light. By entering the teaching profession, I can hope to perform this stupendous task.
I aspire to make a difference in others' lives through education. I'm studying to be an elementary school teacher because I believe that children can achieve so much more if they learn early of their potential. My parents taught me as a child that schooling was vital to success in life. Truly, that lesson has been the most important in my path to college. I don't think I would have made it this far had I not taken my education seriously.
What started from teaching my siblings in their homework ended in me volunteering to teach underprivileged children and this made me realize that in this world there could be never enough educators and that there are always people in this world who are in need of learning. I want to teach others about the importance of education so they too can prosper. Everything I'm learning at university is important for my future career and, if I don't study it, I'm failing my future students. In view of the foregoing reasons, I am convinced that my preference to become a teacher is a step in the right direction. I will, therefore, spare no effort to achieve this ambition of my life.

Rose Chin was partially paralysed in 2018 after a stroke (中风). For several months, she remained in hospital and began to rebuild her strength and ability to communicate. “At the beginning, I was so weak that I couldn't even use a wheelchair,” she says. “I realised that I wouldn't be able to go back to my old life.”
Asking for help was particularly difficult as Chin didn't want to feel like a burden, but after being recommended a course of therapy (疗法), she started to glimpse the future for herself. She started opening up to other people and one day a social worker suggested that she should try a sport. “She mentioned the wheelchair basketball team and I decided to give it a try,” she says.
The first two times Chin arrived at the basketball court as a 65-year-old to try out for the Inveness' wheelchair team, she couldn't make it past the doors. “I looked through the window and just thought:‘I can't do this.’ ” she says. “The third time, though, I made myself go through before I could think about it. The team welcomed me with open arms and it's changed the way I live in my wheelchair ever since.”
Following the successful third attempt onto the court in 2022, Chin was enlisted as part of the 10-person team and began attending weekly training sessions learning how to pass, throw and defend while moving herself in a specially designed chair. “We very quickly became a little family with a group chat full of jokes,” she laughs.“I'm the oldest on the team and the youngest is 19 but when I play, age doesn't come into it—it's such a pleasure.”

(2025·宿迁中学高二期末)In an age of rapid technological advancements and the shifting global economy, understanding the future career intentions of the Gen Z high school students has become increasingly vital. A study that surveyed over 10,000 high school students across the world presents a rough picture of their preference and influential factors. To gain comprehensive insights, quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews have been employed.
The key findings reveal a striking trend that nearly forty-five percent of the participants show interest in STEM-related careers in fields such as technology, engineering, and mathematics. The attraction of these fields, often fueled by innovation and the promise of solving global challenges, highlights the impact of technological revolutions on young minds.
Contrasted to this tech-driven enthusiasm, a significant minority—approximately twenty percent—desires careers in creative industries and humanities on account of the lasting appeal of the arts, literature, and social sciences. In their opinion, personal achievements in contributing to cultural enrichment matter more.
The influence of social factors is also obvious. Due to the increasing viruses in the world, job security sticks out and becomes the prime consideration. In regions experiencing high unemployment rates, there is a noticeable tilt (倾向) towards professions in healthcare and education, perceived as more stable during economic downturns.
To our great amazement, the Gen Z's environmental awareness makes a difference to their career choices as well. Fifteen percent of the students express a desire to work in sustainability-focused fields, indicating a growing awareness of the planet's well-being among them. Many interviewees hope to have a part to play in renewable energy, conservation, and climate policy.
The findings strengthen the necessity for educational institutions and policymakers to make adjustments to keep up with what kids hope for. Meanwhile, parents' providing a family environment that encourages exploration and creativity is of equal importance. Only by doing so may the Gen Z better handle the tricky job world, tackle challenges ahead and truly make a difference.
