【改编自北师大选必二U6】
The advertising industry started with the fundamental purpose of promoting and selling goods to people who might need them.Advertising agencies would create a basic type of advertisement known as a commercial advertisement.Such advertisements have gone through a process of change over the years along with social, economic and technological developments.
Classic advertisements used to give information about finding certain products. It was likely to be the name of a company, part of which might include the name of the place from which the product originated. For example,it could be “Shanghai Sewing Machines”, or “Tsing Tao Beer Corporation”.From the name you would know what the company sells, where they are located, and the name of the product.
Advertising agencies used to create this kind of advertising and it could be very effective. But then they realised that it might not be suitable for a marketplace where products and services are in direct competition with each other.Particularly now,in modern times, advertisements need to attract and hold the attention of the public. For this reason, it's now normal to see advertisements that consist of pictures or words from experts to show people how good the product is.Others try to create advertisements that people simply enjoy looking at.As present-day advertisers often have large budgets, huge amounts of money are spent on applying modern design techniques to make these advertisements as visually attractive as possible. However, even this is often not enough to be noticed in a modern city.

(2025·安阳高二联考)In today's digital age when you can get information in a blink of an eye, there is concern about children developing an appreciation for reading printed books. That's why communities in Australia have come up with a way to spread a love of books in the younger generations.
Communities have handled this issue by bringing libraries to where the kids are—in the streets. The little libraries consist of weatherproof boxes that are set up outside houses or public spaces and are filled with books.People can take books they haven't read and donate ones they have to the libraries.
Street Library Australia, a nonprofit organization, was started by Nick Lowe after he saw a Little Free Library on a trip to the US.After an initial workshop in 2015 to build 30 libraries, the idea mushroomed and now there are 4,500 registered street libraries in Australia.“It just grew and grew,” Lowe said.
The libraries come in all shapes and sizes from innovated doll houses to old kitchen cupboards. They are completely voluntary and anyone can start one.Pamela Zielke who runs a library called Pam's Pantry gives out toys and craft supplies along with books. As an early childhood educator, she started her library with the goal of rescuing books from the dump (废物堆).
But the libraries are doing much more than just providing books and other donated items for people. The street libraries are also building a community.“It's a little stopping place outside your house,” Lowe said.“It's a great way to meet people in your neighborhood who are also book-lovers, to recycle books and to find new books.” But even more importantly, with a shared interest, the libraries are bringing communities closer together.

You know the feeling—you have left your phone at home and feel anxious, as if you have lost your connection to the world.“Nomophobia” (无手机恐惧症) affects teenagers and adults alike. You can even do an online test to see if you have it.Last week, researchers from Hong Kong warned that nomophobia is infecting everyone.Their study found that people who use their phones to store, share and access personal memories suffer most. When users were asked to describe how they felt about their phones, words such as “hurt” (neck pain was often reported) and “alone” predicted higher levels of nomophobia.
“The findings of our study suggest that users regard smartphones as their extended selves and get attached to the devices,” said Dr.Kim Ki Joon.“People experience feelings of anxiety and unpleasantness when separated from their phones.” Meanwhile, an American study shows that smartphone separation can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
So can being without your phone really give you separation anxiety Professor Mark Griffiths, psychologist and director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, says it is what is on the phone that counts—the social networking that creates FOMO (fear of missing out).
“We are talking about an Internet connected device that allows people to deal with lots of aspects of their lives,” says Griffiths.“You would have to surgically remove a phone from a teenager because their whole life is ingrained in this device.”
Griffiths thinks attachment theory, where we develop emotional dependency on the phone because it holds details of our lives, is a small part of nomophobia. For “screenagers”, it is FOMO that creates the most separation anxiety. If they can't see what's happening on the social media, they become panic-stricken about not knowing what's going on socially.“But they adapt very quickly if you take them on holiday and there's no Internet,” says Griffiths.

Scientists Develop a “Crying” Model of Human Eye Tissue
Adapted from how it works
Scientists have created the first 3D model of the human conjunctiva (结膜)—the clear protective outer layer of the eye—in the lab, and it even produces its own tears. The researchers say the new model could be used to study diseases that affect millions of people.
To make the new model, the researchers collected stem cells from conjunctiva tissue provided by organ donors and patients who were undergoing eye surgery. Using chemicals called growth factors, the scientists coaxed the cells into 3D Structures that mimicked the human conjunctiva. The new model contained all the cells normally found in the conjunctiva, including fluid-producing cells, which enable the tissue to make fluid-rich tears that protect and moisten the surface of the eye.
“By using the model, we discovered that the conjunctiva makes anti-microbial components and therefore contributes to tear production in more ways than by simply making fluid,” said Marie Bannier-Hélaou t from the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands.
In addition to revealing these anti-microbial properties of the cells, the model helped the scientists identify tuft cells (簇细胞), a type of cell not previously known to be in the conjunctiva, which have been linked to allergies. Researchers experimented with the new model by applying infectious chemicals to the models to see what would happen during an allergic reaction. “The model started to produce completely different tears: there were more anti-microbial components,” Bannier-Hélaou t said. The newly discovered tuft cells also became more abundant, suggesting they may influence how our eyes respond to allergies.
Researchers intend the model to be used to test new drugs to treat diseases of the conjunctiva, including dry eye, which is caused by a poor quantity or quality of tears, pink eye, or allergies. The researchers hope to one day use this approach to make replacement conjunctivae for people with eye burns, cancer or genetic disorders.

Beth Finds the Palace Beautiful—2

美国南北战争时期,一个普通家庭的四个姐妹的成长之路。
The next day, Beth went to the great house, and was quite surprised to find some music on the piano. At last, Beth touched the instrument (乐器), beginning to play. She stayed till Hannah came to take her home to dinner, but she had no appetite①, and could only sit and smile upon everyone.
After that, the little girl went to the great house nearly② every day. She never knew that Mr. Laurence often opened his door to hear the old music he liked. She never saw Laurie standing in the hall to keep the servants away. And she never suspected③ that the music which④ she found on the piano was put there for her, and when Mr. Laurence talked to her about music at home, she only thought how⑤ kind he was to tell things that⑥ helped her so much.
“Mother, I'm going to make Mr. Laurence a pair of slippers. He is so kind to me. I must thank him, and I don't know any other way. Can I do it?” asked Beth, a few weeks after his visit.
“Yes, dear. It will please him very much, and be a nice way of thanking him. The girls will help you, and I will pay for the material⑦,”replied Mrs. March happily.
Beth worked early and late on the slippers for quite some time, so they were soon finished, and she wrote a short, simple note, and with Laurie's help, got them onto Mr. Laurence's desk one morning before he was up.
Beth waited all day and part of the next before a response⑧ came from the old man. The next afternoon, however, when she returned from a walk around the neighborhood⑨, she found a letter and a little piano waiting for her.
“For me?”cried Beth.
“Yes, all for you, my precious⑩! Isn't it splendid (极好的) of him Don't you think he's the dearest old man in the world We didn't open the letter, but we are dying to know what he says,” cried Jo, hugging her sister.
“You read it! I can't! Oh, it is too lovely!”
Miss March:
Dear Madam,
I have had many pairs of slippers in my life, but I never had any that suited me so well as yours .I hope you will allow me to send you something that once belonged to the little granddaughter I once had. I am grateful for your friendship and wish you the best.
Sincerely,
James Laurence
“Oh, Beth, now that's an honor to be proud of. I'm sure! Laurie told me how fond Mr. Laurence used to be of the child who died, and how he kept all her little things carefully. He's given you her piano. You'll have to go and thank him,” said Jo, jokingly (开玩笑地).
“Yes, I guess I'll go now before I get frightened thinking about it.”And to the amazement of the family , Beth walked to the Laurences' door.
They would have been still more amazed if they had seen what Beth did afterward. She went and knocked at the study door, and when he called out, “Come in!” she did go in, right up to Mr. Laurence, and held out her hand , saying, “I came to thank you, sir.” But she didn't finish, for he looked so friendly that she forgot her speech and, only remembering that he had lost the little girl he loved, she put both arms round his neck and kissed him.
The old gentleman was astonished , but he liked it! He then set her on his knee as he had done with his granddaughter. Beth no longer feared him from that moment, and sat there talking to him as comfortably as if she had known him all her life. When she went home, he walked with her to her gate, then shook hands gently .

M:It's not that bad.
(Text 7)
M:Oh, Lucy.You just wouldn't believe what I've done.

Next, I have to tell you about the process of registering for your courses.First, you have to go to the university administration building to get your registration documents.Don't forget to take your ID.Secondly, take your document to see the head of the department of each course that you want to take. You'll find the room numbers for each class on the registration document. Besides, remember to get a book list for each course when you see the head of the department. Finally, return the completed document to the university administration building. You will then be given a library card.If you have any problems with accommodation, please go to the secretary office, not your academic department.
I think that's all.

I look forward to my half hour train ride to work every morning. I can look out of the window as it twists and turns itself through neighborhoods with the sun casting its strong lighting on the floor of the train car. I sometimes get lost in thought while following the light. But the reason I love this ride is that it's a reminder of how neighborhoods can change from block to block.
For almost a year now I have been riding this train as I head into the office where I work as a reporter for a local magazine. I am one of 13 journalists who help report community news in areas that are often forgotten. And for me, that means covering areas like the one I grew up in.
Last week, as I was on the way to my office, I started wondering how neighborhoods have changed since the 2008 housing crisis. I searched addresses on the city's southwest side, a neighborhood that has seen a significant number of residential homes pulled down. I scanned the street views recorded on my phone and saw how the neighborhood looked in 2007. Then I set out to visit the city block, and that's when I met 3-year-old Harmony.
Harmony loved collecting rocks for me to hold as I walked down the street with her mother, Marquita. I already knew what the neighborhood looked like in the past, but Marquita shared more details of the people who once lived on her block, who were really friendly to each other. However, people today in the neighborhood are busy with life and seldom say hello to each other. Marquita has lived on this block her entire life, and Harmony has for most of her short life as well. But the neighborhood that Marquita grew up in will be one obviously different than the one Harmony will grow to know.
In the end, they smiled at my camera. And then I got back on the train and headed back to the office to tell their stories.

Electronic books have changed the way many people read for pleasure. Now online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach.More than one hundred and seventy-five thousand students attend the public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington.Last year, the school system used digital books in fifteen schools. This school year, middle schools and high schools changed from printed to electronic textbooks in their social studies classes.
Luke Rosa is a history teacher at Falls Church High School. His students work on laptop computers at school. He explains the idea to them this way,“I mean, it's just like a regular textbook, except it's got it all online.”
Peter Noonan, an assistant superintendent (助理监督) of schools, said,“The world's changing. And the online textbooks can change right along with the events that are happening.” Digital books also cost less than printed textbooks, he added.
A student named Melanie Reuter said, “I don't have to carry a textbook around, so that's nice.”
But another student said,“I don't like it because the Internet sometimes doesn't work.”
Students also need access to the Internet when they are not at school.About ten percent of students in Fairfax County do not have a computer or online access at home.Public libraries in the county have free Internet. There are also after-school computer labs as well as computer clubhouses supported by the county.Middle school student Slieman Hakim is happy about that.He said, “My family only has one computer;my sister and I both do our homework on it.So I come here to do my homework. It's good.”

Whom should you marry Where should you live How should you spend your time For centuries, people have relied on their gut instincts (直觉) to figure out the answers to these life-changing questions. Now, though, there is a better way. We are living through a data explosion, as vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior have become more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course to chart.
There has long been overwhelming—and often surprising—evidence that algorithms (算法) can be much better than people at making difficult decisions. Researchers have collected data on various kinds of choices people make, the information they base those choices on, and how things turn out. They have found, for example, that a simple data-driven algorithm would have been better than judges at deciding whether a defendant should stay in prison or be released; better than doctors at deciding whether a patient should undergo surgery; and better than school principals at deciding which teachers should be promoted.
The power of data analysis has been proved in the sports and business worlds, too. As made famous by the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts (球探) at picking players, and better than managers at picking strategies. In finance, the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies dramatically defeated competitors by seeking out patterns in stock market data and using them to inform its investment strategy. Tech firms in Silicon Valley have found that data from experiments provide better insights into how to design their websites than designers could.
These are the early days of the data revolution in decision-making. I am not claiming that we can completely count on algorithms to make our lifestyle choices, though we might get to that point in the future. I am claiming instead that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence mined from thousands or millions of people who faced dilemmas similar to ours. And we can do that now.

Nowadays, online study groups are becoming more and more popular among people. However, people's views on it vary from person to person.
Some people are in favor of studying in online study groups, because they think people can not only learn new things they can't easily get from the books, but also make full use of their spare time to study. However, others hold a different point of view. They argue that online study groups are poorly managed, which will lead to much false information. Besides, studying by joining online study groups is a waste of time. It should be spent more meaningfully.
As far as I am concerned, taking everything into consideration, I approve of studying in online study groups.
第二节(满分25 分)

All the specialists told us what would happen during my five-year-old sister's treatment. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment.
When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out Will people make fun of me?” she asked, her voice filled with worry.
“Don't worry,” I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I'll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we'll both be bald (秃头的). We'll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We'll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise?” she asked. “Promise,” I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover.
The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she'd been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald.
Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head.
However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald Would my parents—who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image—scold (责备) me for having my head shaved Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

One possible version:
I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. Her big, innocent eyes searched my face, filled with both curiosity and a hint of admiration. “Are you really going to do it?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the silence. I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and determination. “Yes, I am,” I replied, forcing a smile. She clapped her hands and said, “We'll be twins!” The first few strokes felt strange, but with each pass of the razor, I felt lighter, as if I were shedding not just my hair, but also my fears and insecurities.
“It's beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. Their approval warmed my heart, and I could see the love in their eyes as they watched this moment unfold. As we stood in front of the mirror, I realized that our bald heads symbolized more than just a physical change; they represented our unity and strength in facing her battle against cancer. We were not just a family; we were warriors, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side.Period 2 Grammar and usage

*We had breakfast after we did morning exercises. 做完早操后,我们吃早饭。*The train started to move just before he reached the platform.他到站台时火车刚开动。

Tired of a life controlled by their mobile phones, many young people are appealing to extreme measures to kick the bug.
A discussion group called the Screen-Free Project now has more than 33,000 members, who promise to “quit” their mobile phones. That generally does not mean they will stop using their phones, but means they will seek to cut down their use of them greatly.
That is a very hard thing to do, particularly when cashless payments are everywhere in China. One way to cut your mobile phone screen time is the mobile phone isolation (隔离) box. Users simply put their mobile phones in the box and set a time lock that will ban them from having access to the phones for a set time.
Lin Tianqi, a student at Beijing Technology And Business University, bought an isolation box recently online. She has attached several eye-catching stickers to the box:“Happiness will find you when you are working.” and “The harder you work, the luckier you are.” The stickers help remind her of the need to face up to reality.
This summer, Lin says, she will be busy preparing for autumn career recruiting (招聘) and the postgraduate entrance exam. With so much to do, if her mobile phone takes up most of her time, it will influence her prospects largely.
Though using a physical box to reduce mobile phone use may not seem so useful, it appears a good thing to the market. However, Liang Wenyu, another college student, looked down on these “useless” attempts.“It is meaningless to use the isolation box; you might as well lock yourself up, as simple as that,” he says, “I can understand why they attach these inspiring stickers on the box—because they lack discipline (自制力).Self-disciplined people will succeed without such tricks.”

It's no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influencers and celebrities—so it's easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.
But,how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at contents shared by celebrities, new research has found.
The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower “appearance satisfaction”. Additionally, it found that engaging with contents posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at contents posted by strangers, including celebrities.
Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it's hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influencers, but when we're comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should—or could—live the way they do.
“One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post,” he said. “At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic.”
This isn't just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers (触发) us. Maybe you've been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role. Maybe...
All this is to state the obvious:We only see part of people's lives—and if it's getting you down, you're probably comparing your insides to other people's outsides. Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So, put down your phone, get offline, be thankful and try to live your own life.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。一项新研究发现朋友的帖子对人们的影响比名人的更大,这让人们更容易与朋友进行比较。作者建议人们放下手机,心存感激,努力过好自己的生活。
5.What did the new study find
A.Social media invites unfavorable comments.
B.Friends' posts affect us more than celebrities'.
C.Celebrities have a negative influence on our life.
D.Body image causes more concern than social life.
B 解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than...by celebrities”可知,新研究发现朋友的帖子对我们的影响比名人的更大。
6.Why are we more likely to compare with our friends according to Swami
A.They serve as role models.
B.We know the way they live.
C.Their lifestyles seem to be accessible.
D.We are curious about their life.
C 解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“when we're comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should—or could—live the way they do”可知,根据斯瓦米的说法,我们更容易与朋友进行比较是因为他们的生活方式似乎更容易得到。
7.What does the underlined word “confined” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A.Restricted. B.Related.
C.Devoted. D.Exposed.
A 解析:词义猜测题。根据第六段中的“We all have one area in our lives that triggers us.Maybe...Maybe...”可知,画线词所在句意为“但这不仅仅局限于身体形象”。所以画线词意为“受限制的”。
8.What does the author suggest people do
A.Find your dream and fight for it.
B.Stop comparing and be yourself.
C.Be grateful and lead a perfect life.
D.Stop complaining and get down to work.

Good morning, dear friends. My name is Li Hua. I am thrilled to speak here. I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about how I learn English on the Internet.
First, there are plenty of resources in English on the Internet, so I learn by reading news, listening to radio programmes and watching films. Besides, the Internet gives me the chance to communicate with native speakers using video calling and online forums, which greatly improves my spoken and written English.
Based on my own experience, learning English online is really a great way for English learners. But I have to say that not everything on the Internet is right and we should learn to identify the wrong information.
In the end, I sincerely hope that you can share your experience of learning on the Internet.
Thank you.

In a small town called Meadowville, there was a beloved playground that had brought joy to generations of children.11-year-old Emma and her best friends, Alice and Leo, were among those who idled away their after-school time and weekends there all year round. It was a place where imaginations soared, friendships blossomed, and laughter echoed through the air.
One afternoon, rushing out the school gate, Emma shouted, “Let's go down to the playground!” The three of them got there soon, but it was locked up.The fence was broken and the swings had tape around them.
Shocked, they stared into each other's eyes, not knowing why.A man approached them, explaining that it was unsafe and the council had decided to shut it down.
“Will they fix it?” asked Alice.
“No, it will cost a lot, at least ten thousand dollars.” the man shook his head, walking away.Leo looked desperate, gazing at the playground and then hanging his head, as if bidding farewell.“We need to get some help!” Emma dragged Alice towards her home.
On stepping into the house, Emma exclaimed, “Dad! We need ten thousand dollars...” Her dad, who was drinking coffee, turned his head around, “What?” Alice then revealed the truth.Hearing this heart-breaking news, Emma's parents were more than surprised, for their childhood was closely connected with that playground as well. They spread the news to other families.
Instead of providing the money, they suggested the children take matters into their own hands while parents offered assistance.

Emma sprang to her feet, “Let's hold a bake sale to raise funds!” Everyone presented lit up, nodding in agreement. With respective tasks, the children and parents got down to the preparation.Emma's father made a huge banner reading “Saving the Playground” while Leo's mom occupied herself with paperwork needed to issue a permit for the sale.Meanwhile, kids worked jointly to design and hand out the leaflets.Eventually, the big day came.Almost every family in their community contributed their delicious homemade treats. That Sunday morning, the aroma of freshly baked cookies and cakes filled the air as people lined up to support the cause.Being a tremendous success, the sale in the farmer's market went for another 2 months.
Their hard work paid off. As news of their efforts spread, local businesses started pitching in.The hardware store donated paint and materials, while the gardening center provided plants and flowers. The children worked tirelessly, transforming the worn-out playground into a vibrant and inviting space once again. On the day of re-opening, the children organized a community celebration, inviting everyone who had contributed to the project to share the joy.The children of Meadowville taught the world that with determination, unity, and a little bit of fundraising, anything is possible. The playground stood as a testament to their resilience and the power of their youthful spirits, reminding everyone that dreams can be achieved when hearts come together.INCLUDEPICTURE "读后续写1LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\读后续写1LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\读后续写1LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET

[2]The jobs themselves ranged from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Some, like Timekeeper or Blackboard Brigadier, were respectable but unremarkable. Others, like Head Gardener, were the most wanted of all.
[3] All eyes were on Lucy, the quiet girl with a heart of gold. Her diligence and gentle spirit had blossomed (绽放) throughout the previous year. She followed instructions with consistent focus, her work a shining example for her peers. Everyone knew Lucy was to be great, surely for the role of Keeper of the Class Pet, a fluffy rabbit or perhaps a talkative parrot.
[4]But this year, Ms. Lee had a surprise in store.A twinkle danced in her eyes as she announced a twist: each student would receive a unique, individual task. Silence fell over the room as she began giving out small, unassuming boxes. Inside each lay a seemingly ordinary responsibility—a duster for the Blackboard Brigadier, a small bell for the Timekeeper. Disappointment hung heavy in the air.
[5]When Lucy received her box, her heart sank. Inside, nestled on a bed of soft sand was a tiny, unmoving ant. “This, Lucy, is no ordinary ant. He needs special care and special understanding,” Ms. Lee whispered. But even Ms. Lee's words couldn't mask the wave of disillusionment (幻灭) that swept through the classroom.
[6]Murmurs (低语) of discontent arose. Lucy's friends stood around her. “Just ignore it, Lucy,” one whispered. “It's not fair!” another shouted. Lucy looked at the tiny ant and a silent promise formed in her heart. This tiny creature, overlooked and underestimated, would become her purpose. She would prove that even in the smallest of tasks, greatness could be found.

1.The fire, which is thought to have started from the 8th floor, spread quickly through the tower block on Sunday night, leaving people on the upper floors trapped. (Para.1)
[分析] 本句是一个复合句。which引导非限制性定语从句;leaving people on the upper floors trapped是现在分词短语作结果状语。

We depend on news to learn about 1.what is happening in the world around us, but we sometimes find reports on 2.the same events may contain different or even contradictory information. For example, about the Henderson Tower fire, two news reports are 3.different(differ) from each other. But how do these differences come about Firstly, journalists may have different priorities, 4.which would influence how they report an event. So we should read news reports about an event in a more comprehensive way. Secondly, because events in the real world are 5.usually(usual) complicated and constantly 6.changing(change), news reports may contradict each other 7.in terms of factual details. Thirdly, journalists may approach information they get from research or interviews differently. To sum up, it is wise to read news reports 8.written(write) from various perspectives and at different 9.stages(stage), and every one of us has the potential 10.to be(be) a critical news reader with great discrimination.

维度四 融合教材·主题探究
【改编自北师大选必二U6】
Reading a book and watching a film are two very different experiences, but it's normal to have high expectations when a film of a favourite book is made. There are many times I have been pessimistic about or even disappointed by a film of a book I love.Although highly regarded books do not always make good films, it is safe to say that great films may be made from not particularly good books.(The Godfather immediately springs to mind.)
The source material for a film may be taken from classic novels, short stories, comic books and stage plays, as well as non-fiction such as biographies and autobiographies, even those written by ghost writers. All can work well, but why do many adaptations and indeed remakes fail both cinema audiences and critics And why do some adaptations get lower ratings than others
A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is.Since a typical film is only around two hours long, it becomes a question for screenwriters to decide what is appropriate for the screen and what to leave out.Screenwriters take creative liberty and sometimes there may be changes to the plot, additions, and even different endings to please producers, directors and test audiences.I, like many people, have often left the cinema feeling “the film is not like the book”.
Another problem area is the cast.Finding actors acceptable to film audiences can mean the difference between success and failure.Readers of the book use their imaginations to visualise characters and have very definite ideas about how characters should look and sound. This is where I think many film adaptations fall down.
1.What is the author's general attitude towards film adaptations of books
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Neutral. D.Unclear.
B 解析:观点态度题。根据第一段中的“Reading a book and watching a film...by a film of a book I love.”可知,作者对书改编成电影的态度是负面的。
2.According to the author, what is a key issue for screenwriters in adapting a book into a film
A.How to make the film longer.
B.How to please producers and directors.
C.How to make changes to the plot.
D.How close to the original the film is.
D 解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“A key question is obviously how close to the original the film is.”可知,对于编剧来说,将书改编成电影的关键问题是电影与原著的接近程度。
3.Why do many film adaptations fail to meet the expectations of book readers
A.Because the scenes are not stimulating.
B.Because the actors do not match the characters.
C.Because the screenwriters lack creative liberty.
D.Because the film length is too short.
B 解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Readers of the book use...many film adaptations fall down.”可知,许多电影改编未能满足读者的期望是因为演员与角色不匹配。
4.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To argue that good books should be adapted to films.
B.To persuade the audiences to accept the adaptations from books to films.
C.To explain the reasons why many adaptations from books to films failed.
D.To inform that adaptations should be based on various kinds of books.
C 解析:写作意图题。通读全文可知,本文的目的是解释许多由书改编成的电影失败的原因。

(2025·浙江G5联盟期中)Born in Sudan in 1990, Hamza Yassin is a wildlife cameraman and TV presenter.
He was eight when they landed in the UK.Besides the changes in climate, he also had to adjust to the change in pets: “Where are everyone's pet lions and monkeys It was all cats and dogs.I hadn't realised what a special upbringing I had had.But it was the UK that cemented my love of wildlife. At first glance, it doesn't look like there is a lot of wildlife, especially in the winter. But if you peel back the layers, there is so much.”
Though his doctor parents didn't have time to closely teach him, they did turn on the television; in particular, the Discovery Channel. David Attenborough's The Life of Birds was an eye-opening experience, and Steve Irwin was a huge inspiration, too. While he thought they had cool jobs, he never thought he could be a presenter. He never saw anyone like him in front of the camera. He was a teenager who wasn't white.
It was still a long road to establishing his career, though. It was not until after he became an assistant for the incredible wildlife cameraman Jesse Wilkinson that he realized he needed to create his own journey. When he was 21, he traveled with friends to the Highlands. Two weeks later, he was back there for good. He told his parents he was living in a beautiful cottage. The truth was that he was living in his car, just trying to make ends meet.He parked at the local ferry terminal but lived there happily for nine months, doing odd jobs—cutting grass, and moving furniture to earn enough money to survive.During that time, he was cutting his teeth as a wildlife cameraman—he was determined that he wouldn't go back to Northampton with his tail between his legs and say to his parents: “I've been defeated.” Luckily, everything paid off. That experience taught him everything he needed to know about the profession.
Eventually Hamza became a renowned wildlife cameraman, inspiring others to pursue their dreams regardless of their background.

(2025·海安高级中学期中)In a move aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to help fight the global climate crisis, the Dutch city of Haarlem is set to become the first in the world to ban advertisements for meat.Beginning in 2024, advertisements for meat were forbidden on buses, shelters, or screens in Haarlem's public spaces.
According to The Guardian, a third of all emissions contributing to global heating come from food production, with meat producing double the pollution of plant-based foods.Forests are cleared to make way for animal pastures (牧草地), and nitrogen-rich fertilizers that help grow plants to feed animals can damage the ozone layer (臭氧层), as well as create water pollution.Animals also produce large quantities of greenhouse gases.
“Meat is just as harmful to the environment as fossil fuels, and we can't tell citizens there's a climate crisis and at the same time encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause,” said Ziggy Klazes, a councillor for the GroenLinks party.“It is a signal, if the ban is picked up nationally, that would only be very nice,” she added. However, the meat sector and some organisations weren't pleased with the ban.A spokesperson for the Central Organisation for the Meat Sector argued the ban was an issue of free speech.
Despite the disagreements about the ban from critics, the move may do the trick. For example, taxes on sugary drinks to help control obesity rates in California cities, including Berkeley and San Francisco, also received pushback when they first launched. In practice, however, Berkeley reported a 21% decrease in consumption just a year following the tax. After three years, the consumption of sugary drinks dropped to 50% and mineral water increased by 29%.
A plant-based diet is probably the biggest way to reduce your impact on Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, land use, water use, etc.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Last month, I began my own two-week-long digital detox.I got the inspiration from the tech writer Paul Miller, who got away from the Internet for a whole year.It was not worth mentioning as against the time Miller spent offline, but it was the longest I had gone through without almost any Internet in 13 years.
Why did I do it For a while I felt the urge to try fully disconnecting to free myself from the endless work.I wanted to take a break from it all for a couple of weeks at least to see what would happen. After all, throughout the last decade, I've been online 24/7, overreacting to my email inbox and social feed (社交媒体动态)—living in a world where the line between the digital world and the real world gets a bit unclear at times.
I haven't of course forgotten that I'm CEO of a social media company. My work is built around the premise (前提) that being connected makes our lives richer, more rewarding and more efficient.Still, I'd forgotten one key lesson along the way: moderation. As more and more of my life was spent scanning social feed and checking out my inbox, I realized that I needed to step back and get a whole new perspective.
So on my winter vacation to Mexico, I took a break from being active on the Internet for the entire trip. For the whole 14 days, I ate a lot of delicious fish tacos, surfed and fixed up my cottage on the beach.I didn't write or send any emails.I didn't scan any Top 10 lists of feed. The one I did give myself was checking my email inbox occasionally—just to make sure an emergency wasn't unfolding while I was away.
What I learned from my short experiment was actually not too unlike what Miller learned.I didn't end up discovering that technology is evil.In fact, I found myself reflecting on how technology over the last few years had let me experience some of the most rewarding and eventful moments of my life.

In many casual discussions of language and the Internet, it's common to hear about how “social media language” is ruining language. Some people argue that technology has made us lazy about how we speak and write. And major media such as the BBC and The Daily Mail have all bemoaned the way in which people communicate through technology.
Of course, language does change when it's used to write messages online. Social media language is an evolution (进化) of language. It's even the focus of the field of linguistics (语言学) called Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). This field concentrates on the study of interaction brought about by technology like computers, mobile phones and tablets.
People have been making complaints about language being “ruined” for as long as they've been writing and speaking. In a TED Talk, linguist John McWhorter shared stories of people being annoyed about language change through the ages. In AD 63, for example, a Roman scholar complained that students of Latin were writing in an “artificial language”. In fact, this writing was a new language that would become French!
Today, people are able to communicate rapidly using a wide variety of tools and technologies. Perhaps no linguistic development better indicates changes in the ways we communicate than the popular emoticon (表情符号).
The emoticon “∶)” is a visual performance of a smiley face turned sideways. Although an emoticon may look like a smile, a frown or any other kind of facial expressions, it doesn't really represent a face. Instead, it's intended to express a feeling, such as “I'm happy” or “just joking”.
Words that represent these feelings are what linguists call discourse particles (小品词). These are little pieces of language that offer information about the tone of the statement.
Far from ruining language, these examples indicate how people can now communicate complex feelings in a simple, direct manner. This kind of change is perfect for our modern, fast-paced world.

(2025·南京高二检测)Texting and e-mailing have become a key part of how we communicate in our lives, so much that it's fundamentally changing language and communication.According to linguist (语言学家) McCulloch, it's making us better writers, speakers, and communicators.
“Language is humanity's most impressive open-source project,” writes McCulloch, who studies and analyzes the patterns of Internet language.“Just as we find things on the Internet by following links from one place to another, language spreads through our conversations and interactions.”
From words and acronyms (like AIDS) to emojis and GIFs, people today have a wide range of ways to express online what they're thinking and feeling, which can be more effective than pure words. If you're meeting a friend for happy hours, sending a GIF of Betty White swirling (旋转) a glass of wine can often show your excitement better than words. Hate Mondays Posting a meme of Grumpy Cat can instantly convey your mood. Those fluent in Internet-speak can also play with punctuation, capitalization, even spacing to convey emotional state and tone of voice.Words can now be altogether replaced with emblems and icons, which helps explain the popularity of emojis and GIFs in our online conversations.
All of these help make our social interactions more interesting, and the fluidity (不稳定性) of language is actually its biggest strength.“I mean, fashion can change, why can't language?” asks McCulloch.“In fact, language has changed and is always changing.Linguists are generally very positive about language evolution. There's not one right way to communicate. We don't speak the way Shakespeare did, and Shakespeare didn't speak the way Chaucer did.But it's unfortunate that this message hasn't been conveyed to broader society as much because we're still dealing with a history of people worshipping Latin.”
