(2025·永州四中期中)Sports is one of the purest concepts developed. For some, sports is a hobby, others an escape, but for Jason Hills, Post Media Edmonton part-time writer, sports is everything.
At a young age, watching countless hours of sports allowed Hills to process and develop an escape to deal with the childhood painful experience of losing both his parents in a car accident. With so much inside his head, sports provided him with the outlet that millions of people employ daily: being enveloped into “the game”.
Later, as Hills grew into a young man, he began to become involved with school sports. As Hills began to play, the concept of being involved with a university team came into a dream.
Following high school graduation, Hills realized that athletics university might not be in the cards, but was still very determined to have sports play a major role in his life. So he attended Lethbridge College for its Journalism Diploma program. Since then, Hills has been a major component of athletics university coverage in Edmonton for over 10 years. Spending long hours travelling to back and forth across the North Saskatchewan River covering all the postsecondary teams, Hills is Postmedia's go-to reporter in Edmonton for everything amateur sports.
Hills is a story teller. Though his articles include features, game recaps (简报) and series previews, all of his work showcases university student-athletes like no one else in the City of Edmonton. Hills stands out and stands above many, with an extraordinary ability to capture the athletes' true voice. By putting himself in their shoes, Hills empathizes (有同感) with the student-athletes by telling their stories, bringing a truly human element to the piece.
“My grandma told me when I was young, no matter what you do in life, just do what makes you happy,” Hills recalls.“This type of job and this type of career, you're not going to make millions in it. You have to do it because you love it and because you're passionate about it.”

(2025·江苏泰州中学第二次质检)At the end of the nineteenth century,an Englishman living in Brazil sent his son Charles Miller across the Atlantic to be educated in England. During his stay in England,Charles grew passionately keen on football and often sharpened his skills in the playground. In 1894,he packed his bags and returned to his family in Brazil. In his bags,he took a football as a souvenir.
Back in Brazil,Charles was willing to consider and accept other people's opinions. When he talked to local people about their leisure activities,it suddenly hit him that he could try to get them interested in football. At first he had little success; the only people who showed any interest were young Englishmen who walked on the street; thus the first game of football in Brazil was played between two teams of young Englishmen,on a field from which the goats and cows had been removed.
Charles asked some journalists to come and see this new English game, but none came along. However,as the weeks went past, the scene of twenty-two young people running around after a ball began attracting viewers from schools nearby. Then, young local men began kicking balls around too.
“Balls” is perhaps the wrong word—the only football in Brazil at the time was the one that Charles Miller had brought back with him from England. The Brazilian viewers had to create their own footballs, using cans or whatever they could find to make them with. After a short period of time, these local viewers could defeat the foreign players easily without proper training. They were gifted in playing the game because they could move more quickly and easily with the ball.
Then, the football game became a great attraction in Sao Paulo. By 1901,there was already a league of clubs in Sao Paulo. The football game burst onto the stage of Brazil's history.

What It's Like to Spend Junior Year in Germany
Adapted from https:///
Junior Mackenzie Barrera left the Portland International Airport, waving goodbye to her family as she boarded her flight. The plane would take her to Germany, where she will stay until June, going to school and living with her host family, as part of an exchange program.
First, the school system is slightly different from the US. Barrera is in 11th grade, but in Germany, 11th grade is the beginning of the Abitur years where students study for their high school diploma. As the classes have an intense focus on tests and quizzes, Barrera was put in 10th grade classes so that she can have an easier time understanding the lessons. In order to take off any academic pressure from Barrera, her school in Germany also decided against giving her any grades. Instead, she only needed to focus on lectures given in class.
At school in Germany, there is a large cultural difference in the outward friendliness that is displayed in the US. Barrera has noticed how less frequently many Germans smile at one another. While they are still nice, small talk is not as common as it is in the US. There is a comparison of the two countries called peach and coconut countries. Coconut countries, like Germany, it's a lot harder to break through the shell...but once you do you have a friend for life. In the United States, you can just bite into a peach and immediately you already know a lot about the peach.Neither is bad, just different.
At times, Barrera misses home as a whole. Her true homesickness happens when she is out, as she occasionally sees things that remind her of family and friends.
Despite the difficulties she has faced with school and homesickness, Barrera admits she's grown a lot. Everyone needs to go through a process where they truly question who they are. For Barrera, being in Germany, a completely different place, around people who don't know her, has helped her discover more about herself. “It allows me to figure out who I actually am,” she said.

Suddenly he said:“My dear Victor, what is the matter with you?Are you ill?Has something awful happened?”
“Don't ask me that,” I cried. I put my hands over my eyes. I thought I could see the horrible creature there in front of me①. I pointed wildly② across the room, and shouted③:“He can tell you. Save me! Save me!” I tried to fight the creature, but there was nothing there. Then I fainted④ and fell to the floor.
Poor Henry! I do not know what⑤ he thought. He called a doctor and they put me to bed. I was very ill for two months, and Henry stayed and looked after⑥ me. His loving care saved me from death.
I wanted to go home and see my family as soon as possible⑦. When I was well enough, I packed⑧ my clothes and books. All my luggage (行李) was ready, and I was feeling very happy when⑨ the postman arrived with some letters. One of the letters ended⑩ my short time of happiness.
The letter was from my father in Geneva, and this is what he wrote:
My dear Victor,
I want you to know before you arrive home that an awful thing has happened. Your dear youngest brother, William, is dead. He was murdered . It happened last Thursday evening when Elizabeth and I and your two brothers, Ernest and William, went for a walk outside the city. William and Ernest were playing. William had hidden from Ernest, and Ernest asked Elizabeth and me to help find William. We all began to search for him, but we couldn't find him. We searched all night but in vain . At five in the morning I found him. He was lying on the grass, white and still . I could see the marks of fingers on his neck—the murderer had strangled him. Elizabeth had let him wear a gold chain of hers round his neck. On the chain was a very small picture of your mother. We all think that someone murdered William to steal the gold chain. Poor Elizabeth is terribly unhappy at William's death. She thinks he died because she let him wear the chain. Hurry home, my dear Victor. You are the only one who can help Elizabeth, and we all need you.
With all our love,
Your Father
Henry helped me to catch the train. The journey seemed very long, and it was late at night before the train reached Geneva. I decided to spend the night in a village outside the town and go home early in the morning. I wanted to see the place where William had died.
As I started my walk, a storm broke and lightning lit the sky. The police had put posts (布告) round the place where the murderer had strangled William, so I found it easily. I cried sadly as I stood there. My poor brother had been a kind and happy boy, and we had all loved him.
Again the lightning lit the sky, and I saw a huge figure standing in the rain. When I saw it, I knew at once what it was. It was the creature that I had made.
What was he doing there? But although I asked myself the question, I knew the answer. He had murdered my brother. I was sure that I was right.
I decided to try and catch him. But as I moved, he ran towards the mountains. He ran much faster than any man. He climbed the mountain easily, reached the top, and disappeared .
I stood there in the dark and the rain, and knew that I had created a monster. And he had murdered my brother.

When tennis player Sam Bencheghib recognized the way the oceans in his home country, Indonesia, were polluted, he and his older brother, Gary, co-founded Make a Change World, an organization supporting sustainability as well as helping to cut plastic pollution. The company shares short videos encouraging eco-friendly actions.
Bencheghib has worked on several projects overseas. But he wanted to do something in the United States on his own.In January, Bencheghib came up with the idea to run from Los Angeles to New York, to make people pay attention to plastic pollution and its influence on oceans.Starting on June 8, Bencheghib has kept running 20 miles a day for 140 days.Along the way, he plans to host education speeches at schools, universities and town halls as well as organize street and city cleanups to influence people.
Bencheghib said he understands the difficulty of his task but recognizes that taking risks often has advantages.Unsurprisingly, when he told his team and coaches about his plan, he was met with surprise.
“We were all really excited but couldn't believe it,” teammate Christopher Auteri said.“It's crazy how long it is, but we know if there's anyone who's going to do it, it's going to be Sam.”
Since Bencheghib broke the news to the team, there have been no plastic water bottles in the locker room, and teammates join Bencheghib on training runs.Coach Wouter Hendrix said Bencheghib's work shows his persistence and courage, which he believes will serve as invaluable qualities for completing his run.

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center mapped brain changes after a year of aerobic workouts and uncovered a potentially significant process: Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain associated with memory.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory issues improve cognition, a finding that could guide future Alzheimer's disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study, researchers followed 30 participants who were 60 or older and had memory problems. Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches. “We've shown that even when your memory starts to fade, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle,” said Binu Thomas, a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. “The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year; the other group showed slight change. Brain imaging of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function.”
Many teams across the world are trying to determine if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss. Evidence is growing that it could at least play a small role in delaying or reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease. For example, a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of vital nerve fibers in the brain called white matter related to memory.
“Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together,” Thomas says. “But we've seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong benefits for our brains as well as our hearts.”

As we all know, keeping healthy is very important to everyone. Recently our school has been calling on us to take exercise for our physical and mental health.
First of all, we should make full use of our time in the morning and the breaks between classes. Of course, we can do exercises on the way to and from school too. Secondly, we should exercise by doing different kinds of sports, such as running, jumping and basketball, etc. Finally, no matter what kind of sports you choose, stick to it.

Finding the Perfect Sandy
“Ashley, our Sandy is singing again!”
The stage manager called to me, and I walked on stage to clip the leash (扣上皮带) onto Baily, the dog playing the role of Sandy, who was supposed to be merely a supporting role in the school musical. Our director was very close to just getting a toy animal or an actor in a dog suit.Baily was our third Sandy, but I knew he would not be the last.
“Ashley, can you please find another dog for us by Monday?” asked Mr.Loomis, our director and drama teacher.
“OK!” I knew that this dog had to be perfect.
“I think I can help you get a dog,” offered Jose, our assistant director.“In fairness, Mr.Loomis has to keep our program going. There are always threats to cut it, so he doesn't want to see anything too odd on stage.” Jose added.
That was why I chose to stay backstage, despite my love for singing and dancing. My giant birthmark (胎记) that covered half of my face would be too much of a distraction.I had been in the group for one musical, and loved it, but afterward I overheard a lady telling Mr.Loomis how kind it had been for him to cast (选角) me.After that, I quit and worked behind the scenes.
“Let's avoid odd,” I agreed.
Jose nodded.“I texted my neighbor Mrs.Kart who runs a shelter, immediately Baily started howling. She replied me right back saying she knew the perfect dog.”
We walked to Mrs.Kart's shelter.“I have got the dog for you!” she announced.“His name is Farley. He works part-time at the airport comforting passengers who are nervous about flying.” Then she burst back through the door with a cute bundle of energy.Farley had soulful eyes and black and white spots, but the main thing about him was that he was missing a leg.
“He's a three-legged dog!” I exclaimed, stating the obvious. Both Jose and I stood back for a moment as we considered this dog.
I sighed.“Are there any other dogs at the shelter?”

Unfortunately, my weekend search did not produce any other possibilities.Despite visiting numerous shelters, each attempt left me discouraged than the last. With the performance day approaching, I felt like an ant on a hot pan as my pressure mounted and panic set in heavily. But when I stood in front of Farley, watching him playfully chase his tail and his soulful eyes glittering, I finally determined to give the three-legged creature a try.On the day of performance, to my great amazement, Farley didn't chew or bark or do anything inappropriate, but acted like a star, following the directions given and performed perfectly for his tender nature.Thunderous applause erupting from the audience confirmed that Farley's was the perfect Sandy despite his imperfection.
“I thought that performers had to be perfect.” I said to Mr.Loomis after the performance.Startled by my words, Mr.Loomis gazed at me cautiously, shaking his head, “Actually, I was very confused and disappointed when you quit casting. You were cast for your good vocal range and passion for the stage.” With choked emotions, I explained, “I didn't want to create visual tension due to my birthmark.I thought you cast me out of pity but what you desired definitely was perfection.” Patting me on the shoulder, Mr.Loomis told me that theater was for everyone, and perfection isn't about being flawless, yet it was about bringing a genuine spirit and connection to the performance. With these words striking into my heart, I decided to follow my passion and be the perfect Sandy myself.INCLUDEPICTURE "读后续写1LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\读后续写1LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\读后续写1LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET

Kwan's Secret Talent
[1]“Kwan, isn't that your art teacher?” his grandmother said, pointing at a woman walking out of the grocery store.
[2]Kwan waved, and Mrs. Gibbs walked over to him and his grandmother. “It's very nice to see you,” Mrs. Gibbs said. Then she saw the cloths wrapped around the groceries Kwan and his grandmother were loading into their car. “Oh, how beautiful!” she exclaimed.
[3]“Thank you. These are our hometown wrapping cloths,” Grandmother explained. “Kwan and I embroidered (刺绣) them together.” Kwan looked away. Although he enjoyed helping Grandmother make the cloths, he didn't want anyone at school to know about it.
[4]“Kwan, you should bring your cloths to school tomorrow. Your classmates would enjoy seeing them. You have a unique skill,” Mrs. Gibbs said. Kwan appreciated his teacher's comments, but he was hesitant. The kids might laugh at the idea of a boy who liked to stitch (缝) patterns with a needle and thread. But then he thought about his grandmother's wide smile that showed how proud of him she would be for sharing this custom.
[5]“OK. I'll bring some to class tomorrow,” Kwan replied quietly.
[6]Grandmother sensed that something was wrong. “Kwan, are you worried about tomorrow?” she asked. Kwan stared at the floor. “What are the other kids going to think?” he said. “This isn't the kind of thing they do for fun. Creating embroidered patterns isn't like playing an instrument or a sport.”
[7] “You're right,” Grandmother said. “It is different. But that is why it is so special.” Then she brought out a fine cloth with different designs. “When your grandfather and I were married, we received a gift from his mother wrapped in this cloth she made. In our culture, gifts given in wrapping cloths are extra special because they are a symbol of love and good luck,” she explained.

Hello, there.Good afternoon!Thank you for your finding the time in your busy schedules to come to the international student office's first meeting for students going abroad, to South America next autumn.By the way, if you haven't already signed next to your name on our attendance lists—they're on the table at the entrance to the school hall—be sure to do it on your way out. Remember, this meeting is a must for you, so you need to make sure we know that you're here.
All right, to begin, we're going to be talking about health, and specifically the procedures that you have to go through in order to get your student visas for your host country. For all of you, this will include gathering health information, such as proof from your doctors that you're not suffering from any serious diseases that may pass to others. All the information that each of you will need can be found in your host country handbook that you received when you were accepted into the program.
Also, each one of you is required to meet with a doctor at the student health center who is specialized in travel medicine. The health center can give you information about appointment times, but be sure to book your appointment early, because the specialist is only at the health center at certain times. To have the benefit, you should have your meeting at least 4-6 weeks before your trip.

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one student delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by those who attended. He began with a question. “Everything God does is done with perfection. Yet, my son, Shay, cannot learn and understand things as other children do. Where is God's plan reflected in my son?”
The audience was stilled by the question. The father continued, “I believe that when God brings a childlike Shay into the world, an opportunity to realize the Divine Plan presents itself. And it comes in the way people treat that child.”
Then he told the following story:
Shay and I walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they will let me play?”
I knew that most boys would not want him on their team. Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. So I approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance from his teammates. Getting none, he took matters into his own hands and said, “We are losing by six runs. The game is in the eighth inning. He can be on our team and we will try to put him up to bat in the ninth inning.”
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. At the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the outfield.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. They had the potential to win. Would the team actually let Shay bat at this juncture and give away their chance to win the game
Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. At last, understanding what the boy's intentions had been, the boys from both teams helped Shay win the game for the team and Shay was cheered as the hero.
“That day,” said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of the Divine Plan into this world.”

School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend's farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit organization that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she's taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed, or to learn the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

Without sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, climate change threatens the future Winter Olympic Games because their locations would be too warm to host the events, a new study has found.
If the world's high emissions continue their trend, by the 2080s all but one of the 21 cities that previously hosted the Winter Olympic Games—Sapporo, Japan—would not be able to do so again. Among them, 6 cities would be considered “marginal”while 14 would even be seen “unreliable”—meaning the right conditions for snow and athlete safety cannot be met.
But that won't necessarily happen if the world takes urgent action and follows the Paris Climate Accords adopted in 2015, according to Daniel Scott, the lead researcher for the University of Waterloo's report. Under that deal, nearly 200 countries agreed to greatly cut their collective greenhouse emissions.
Athletes and coaches surveyed by the researchers said they're already seeing the effect climate change has on their sports. “Some of the coaches that did the survey have been coaches in the sport for 30 years,”Scott said. “They've traveled the world, back to the same competitions, and they've seen that certain competitions don't happen as regularly or uninterruptedly as they used to because of warmer temperatures.”
The Summer Olympics are also feeling the effects of climate change. The Tokyo's Olympic and Paralympic Games are likely one of—if not—the hottest and most humid Olympic Games on record. Daily temperatures reached 80? high with high humidity that could make it feel like 100?.
But winter sports seem more strongly influenced by the impact of a warmer world. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi,Russia, skiers were overheating in the same way a marathon runner would do at nearly 90? weather.Due to the great impact, the study makes us worry that outdoor games may have to move indoors or be held at a different time of year in order to accommodate higher temperatures.

32.What does the underlined word “marginal” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Almost unqualified.
B.Pretty satisfactory.
C.Rather unpopular.
D.Quite suitable.
33.Why are the Tokyo's Olympics mentioned in paragraph 5
A.To show the spirit of the Olympics.
B.To stress the impact of climate change.
C.To reveal the cause of warmer climate.
D.To compare the Summer and Winter Olympics.
B 解析:推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The Summer Olympics...Games on record.”可知,夏季奥运会也受到了气候变化的影响。由此可推知,第五段提到东京奥运会是为了强调气候变化带来的影响。
34.What is the author's attitude to the finding of the study
A.Conservative. B.Tolerant.
C.Optimistic. D.Concerned.
D 解析:观点态度题。根据最后一段中的“Due to the great impact...accommodate higher temperatures.”可知,作者对研究的发现是表示担忧的。

One possible version:
Good morning, everyone!
I'm Li Hua from Xingguang Middle School. It's a great honour for me to deliver a speech whose topic is “The Importance of Sports”.
As we all know, sports play an important part in our daily life. Not only can sports enrich our life but it can also help us keep fit. Besides, a person working out regularly will be more positive and confident rather than give up easily. Therefore, we will study more efficiently. What I want to stress at last is that those who compete in sports events will learn how to face failure properly.
In a word, sports can make a great difference and add much happiness to our life. I sincerely call on us students to take regular exercise from now on. Let's start from jogging!
Thanks for your listening.
第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“There's no way I'm leaving vacation early for Junior Varsity (JV) tennis tryouts (初中网球校队选拔赛),” my 14-year-old daughter Emily said. “I doubt whether I'll make the team.”
“Do you want to be on the team?” I asked.
“I do, but I'll probably get cut.”
As a little girl, Emily was fearless. But like many middle schoolers, she'd started to become more cautious and less willing to make mistakes. My husband and I always said to our fearless daughter, “Honey, why not put yourself out there?”
Her brother Ben, then 15, looked up from his phone.
“Well, you know, you should try out for JV. You definitely won't make the team if you don't have a try,” he said.
“Are you out of your mind?” Emily asked. “If I take the challenge, what if I fail?”
“If you don't take the challenge, what if you regret?” he responded.
We encouraged her to take risks, to own her goals, to learn from failure and to bounce back from disappointment. Finally, she was determined to tell the coach to have a try.
The night before JV tryouts, the coach emailed the player and explained the process. Each day, the girls could challenge the person directly above them on the ladder. At the end of the week, the top 12 players would make the team.
Emily came downstairs to show me the email, highlighting one data point in particular. “I told you,” she said. “I am really ranked the lowest. Number 25 out of 25 players.”
“Look on the bright side.” I said. “You've got nowhere to go but up.”

One possible version:
When I picked her up that afternoon, she was noticeably calmer. She said she beat Number 24.“How did you make it?” I asked with curiosity. “I encouraged myself to look on the bright side instead of focusing on the final result.” she poured out her delight with her eyes filled with light and hope. Over the course of the week, she continued to challenge her opponents. Obviously, the other girls were all technically better, but she spared no efforts to fight for every strike. To our relief, she didn't give up halfway, but moved forward bravely with the tryout proceeding.
One week later, Emily, landing at Number 15, was cut from the tryout. I searched my mind for any possible word to comfort her, but in vain. However, she said with a determined look, “That's OK. I have pushed myself out there.” What she really cared about was no longer the result itself but the fighting process. She accomplished more than what she had expected. Number 15, for her, was a sign to show a brand-new herself, overcoming her fear and stepping out of her comfort zone. Emily's experience, for us, is a reminder: Learn to take risks, have the courage to fail and go down fighting.INCLUDEPICTURE "英YLXZXBX2UNIT2LLL.TIF" INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\英YLXZXBX2UNIT2LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\Users\\Administrator\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\INetCache\\Content.Word\\英YLXZXBX2UNIT2LLL.TIF" \* MERGEFORMATINET

Near the small town of Grottoes, Virginia, a narrow dirt road goes from the house of Stephen Curry's grandfather to the woods nearby.A far cry from the bright lights and shiny courts of the National Basketball Association (NBA), it was along this road that Stephen's grandfather built a simple basket by attaching a piece of plastic to a telephone pole.
Like his father, basketball star Dell Curry, Stephen spent many childhood hours playing on this muddy basketball court. He probably didn't realise it at the time, but it was where he learnt to be creative and flexible as a player. You see, with every shot, the weak plastic backboard gave way.The bumps and rocks that lined the road under the basket caused the ball to bounce in all directions.Knowing where the ball would go wasn't easy.He had to adjust his own playing style as a result.Shooting with great accuracy was another thing he learnt.Only shots perfectly aimed at its centre went into the heavy, thick basket. In this way, practising day in and day out helped Stephen sharpen his skills.
Despite his father's successful career, Stephen was thought by many people, including his high school teammates and coaches, to be too short, too thin and too weak to follow in his father's footsteps. But Stephen carried on.Playing basketball was his dream. He would not give up.He finally ended up playing college ball at a small, little-known school, Davidson College, not too far from where he lived. His creativity and perseverance made him Davidson's star player.
Selected for the NBA in 2009, Stephen joined the Golden State Warriors. He performed beyond everyone's expectations with his accurate shooting and continuous efforts. In 2015, Stephen won his first NBA championship, and he led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975.

(2025·湖南七校期中联考)After years of pounding my knees and ankles in dashes and the long jump, pain ended my decades of track and field competition. But how do you live without the adrenaline (肾上腺素) of racing That's simple. You just become sensible at age sixty and turn to competitive swimming! Suddenly, the pounding was gone, and so was the pain. However, in less than a month, I was fed up with pool laps and no sights. Now what
A friend in the Annapolis Striders had the answer. This marathoner said he had stayed fit by intense walking while healing from a running injury. “Try it,” he said. “It's even a competitive sport.” Sure enough, a certain kind of energetic walking is a 100-year-old Olympic event called racewalking.
I took to this sport immediately. I didn't have to enter races to be a racewalker. However, those who compete must follow rules and must please numerous hard-eyed judges or be disqualified (DQ). But for me, doing it was enough. It took me many months to become smooth in the style. I had lost a sport but had found another.
Then came a disaster. Lower back pain had arrived. “Surgery is a last solution,” I was told. Dr.Clifford Solomon, super-surgeon of Annapolis, Maryland, had the cure. It left me with full leg control, but a flopping (耷拉的) foot. I would be able to jog, but not meet racewalk rules. By chance I tuned the TV to an old movie showing Fred Astaire dancing up a storm. From the ankle down, his feet swiveled (旋转) in the very motion I needed. I turned off the TV and went to the Senior Center.
As the only man among twenty-nine students in the tap dancing class I learned that grandmothers are programmed to care for any wounded creature. Some paid particular attention to this seventy-five-year-old patient, staying after class to guide and inspire. With examples, humor, encouragement and advice, they taught me to tap dance. They cured my flopping foot.
Within a year, I was competing well enough to enter the USA Track and Field Nationals in Boston and break the American record for the 3,000-meter racewalk. And now, at eighty-six, I'm still competing and often thinking of those ladies.

A new research led by University of Pittsburgh psychologists shows that older adults may be able to prevent declines (衰退) in a certain kind of memory by sticking to regular exercise.
From the study, exercising about three times a week for at least four months is how much people need to obtain the benefits in episodic memory (情景记忆). Episodic memory, which is supported by a part of the brain that's known to benefit from exercise, is the kind that deals with events that happened to you in the past. It's also one of the first to decline with age.
Exercise that gets the heart pumping has shown promise in increasing brain health, and experiments on mice show that it improves memory, but studies looking at the same link in humans have come out mixed.
During the research, the team read 1,279 studies carefully, eventually narrowing them down to just 36 that met specific criteria (标准). Then they used specialized software and no small number of Excel spreadsheets to transform the data into a form where the different studies could be directly compared. That work paid off when they found that pooling together those 36 studies was enough to show that for older adults, exercise can indeed benefit their memory.
Past analyses looking at connections between exercise and memory didn't find one, but the team took several extra steps to give them the best chance of finding a link if one did exist. They limited their search to particular groups and age ranges as well as a specific kind of strict experimental setup. Another key was focusing specifically on episodic memory.
With that much larger pool of participants, the team was able to show a link between exercise and episodic memory. The team also found the greatest effects of exercise in those who hadn't yet experienced any cognitive (认知的) decline.

(2025·郑州月考)I have learned a great many things from playing football. And it has changed my entire attitude towards life.
In my freshman year at high school, I was shy, had low self-confidence and kept away from seemingly impossible challenges. On the first day of freshman practice, the team warmed up with a game of touch football. However, during the game, I didn't run as hard as I could, nor did I try to escape from my defender and get open. The fact of the matter was that I really didn't want to be the one at fault if I dropped the ball and the play didn't succeed.I didn't want to take the responsibility of helping the team because I was too afraid of making a mistake. That aspect of my character led the first year of my high school life.I avoided asking questions in class, afraid they might be considered too stupid by my classmates.
During my second-year season, my position at the backup guard led me to play in the games since another backup guard on my team was seriously injured. From then on, I made mistakes sometimes and was blamed by my coaches indeed. However, those criticisms didn't make my teammates look down upon me, instead they helped me a lot.At times I made great plays on which I was congratulated. Now, I feel like a changed person.
Over the years, playing football has taught me what it takes to succeed. From months of tough practices, I have learned to work hard. From my coaches and teammates, I have learned to work well with others in a group. But most importantly, I have gained self-confidence.I realize that it is necessary to risk failure in order to gain success. Now, I welcome the challenge.

When you can't fit your entire workout into a busy day,do you think there's no point in doing anything at all You should rethink that mindset.Just 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic activity per day could lower your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病) or premature death, a large new study has found.
Aerobic activities include walking, dancing, running, jogging, cycling and swimming. You can estimate the intensity level of an activity by your heart rate and how hard you're breathing as you move.Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with lower rates of premature death and chronic disease, according to past research. But how the risk levels for these outcomes are affected by the amount of exercise someone gets has been more difficult to determine. To explore this impact, scientists largely from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom looked at data from 196 studies, amounting to more than 30 million adult participants who were followed for 10 years on average.
The study mainly focused on participants who had done the minimum recommended amount of 150 minutes of exercise per week,or 22 minutes per day.Compared with inactive participants, adults who had done 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic physical activity per week had a 31% lower risk of dying from any cause,a 29% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 15% lower risk of dying from cancer. The same amount of exercise was linked with a 27% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and 12% lower risk when it came to cancer.
“This is a convincing systematic review of existing research,” said CNN Medical Analyst Dr Leana Wen,an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, who wasn't involved in the research.“We already knew that there was a strong correlation between increased physical activity and reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death. This research confirms it,and furthermore states that a smaller amount than the 150 minutes of recommended exercise a week can help.”

The widespread sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle has become a problem in America, fueling the rising obesity (肥胖) rate.
Now a new study finds that being surrounded by active friends can help a person living a sedentary lifestyle get more exercise each day.Researchers find that people in social groups where exercise is valued are more likely to be more active themselves. Lonely people are more likely to live sedentary lifestyles without another person around to give them a boost. The findings highlight the idea that the company a person keeps can be a boost to their overall health and direction in life.
Dr. Diana Thomas, a professor at a military school and study author, said that the idea for the research came from real life experiences on the campus. Her team had noticed a trend of people becoming more interested in fitness and other activities once arriving at the school. This is not usually the case at other schools and workplaces, where there is no significant impact on fitness. Thomas believed that this trend could be the result of in-group social conditioning, where people will take part in activities that others around them are doing.
People whose data were gathered for the study were split into three groups based on their physical activity level—sedentary, moderately active and extremely active. Moderately active folks were the most important for drawing people who are sedentary to become active, and to sustain that activity. Thomas explained that sedentary people would be unlikely to change their behavior when placed in a group of the extremely active, as it would seem unattainable.
