For most of Natalie Grabow’s life, she didn’t know how to swim. At 59, she made a brave decision to learn the skill, driven by a bigger goal: to finish a triathlon (铁人三项). “Swimming was my biggest problem to solve,” she said later. Step by step, she overcame (克服) her fear of water and built the skills she needed.
Over the next 20 years, Grabow turned her dream into action. As a former software engineer, she had long loved running, but injuries often held her back. The cross-training part of triathlon felt perfect for her, as it lowered the risk of harm. She trained hard and soon won several shorter half-triathlon races, growing stronger with each challenge.
By age 80, Grabow was ready for the world’s toughest test: the Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. On race day, she jumped into the ocean to swim 2.4 miles, then rode her bike 112 miles past hot lava (熔岩) fields and windy coast roads. She finished with a full marathon run that climbed over 1,000 feet, crossing the line in 16 hours and 45 minutes — well before the time limit, while more than 60 younger athletes failed to finish. She became the oldest woman ever to complete the race.
For Grabow, her successful finish puts a strong ending on a 20- year journey. “I am so happy and grateful that I can still race in this sport at my age,” Grabow says. “Triathlon allows me to feel strong both in my mind and body, and it also keeps my competitive spirit alive.”
Asked whether she has any tips for new athletes, Grabow keeps it simple. “Listen to your body, rest when you need to, and most importantly, just appreciate the journey,” she says. For her, the sport is not just about winning, but about growing stronger, staying curious, and never stopping trying new things.

An upcoming wearable device (设备) for the blind could help them move around public and outdoor spaces on their own, acting as “glasses” that guide them. The glasses are actually a headset, similar to the ones you might wear for VR (Virtual Reality) experiences. Unlike those headsets, this one doesn’t show any pictures. Instead, it delivers soft shakes on your forehead, along with sound from built-in speakers, to guide you through public areas.
The device is noticeable in design. It has a sizeable sensor fixed on the forehead, a camera set in the front, and a large battery group at the back. It supports up to two hours of use on a single charge, and the whole package weighs 1 kg. The AI-powered system works out sensor readings (传感器读数) over 100 times a second. It helps the device understand where you’re walking and what’s in front of you, so you can avoid things that block the way.
You can use your voice to ask for guidance to specific places. You can set locations like “home” or “work” in advance, and the device will understand simple instructions like “take me to my office”, then lead you all the way to the right building.
The device may take the place of a guide dog, which is perhaps the best possible choice for blind people to find their way around. But that means a long wait and requires the blind to take on the big responsibility of caring for the dog over several years.
So far, the company has invited more than 400 blind users in over 40 countries to test the glasses in real environments. If the device can deliver on its promise, it will provide a new level of personal freedom to people around the world living with blindness.

People have believed for many years that horses can “smell fear,” and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horse calm. Past studies have found that horses pick up human emotions from our facial expressions and voices. Recently, a team of researchers set out to see if horses can sense people’s emotions from smell alone.
In the study, 30 people were asked to watch videos of happy scenes while cotton pads (棉花垫) under their arms collected their sweat. Then, with new pads under their arms, they watched a frightening film. The researchers then divided 43 horses into three groups. Each group wore muzzles (口套) over their nose and mouth with different pads: one with a pad of happy sweat, one with sweat from the frightened, and one with a clean pad.
The team then tested the horses to see how they reacted to unexpected events, such as an umbrella being opened near them or an unfamiliar object being placed in front of them. Horses that wore the “fear” muzzle acted more frightened. Their hearts beat faster, they were more likely to startle (受惊), and they were less likely to be curious about the new object or approach humans.
“The fearful smells from humans amplify the reactions of horses,” lead study author Plotine Jardat said. “The significance is that horses can smell how we feel, even if they can’t hear or see us.”
The researchers hope that better understanding horses’ emotions can help people interact more positively with the animals and improve horse health and happiness. Stressed or frightened horses often react with behavior that can be dangerous, such as kicking or running away, so knowing the importance of remaining calm can also keep humans safer around these animals.
