Cammie, a young camel who lost her front leg in Pakistan’s Sindh province, left her caregivers emotional as she walked for the first time on a prosthetic (义肢的)leg. “I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true,” said Sheema Khan, manager of an animal shelter in Karachi. Veterinarian Babar Hussain confirmed it was the first time a large animal in Pakistan had received a prosthetic leg.
Cammie’s leg was said to be cut off by a landlord in June 2024 as a punishment for entering his field in search of food. A viral video of the wounded camel on social media prompted immediate government action. She was transported the next day to Karachi — 250 kilometers away, and has been living in a shelter there ever since.
“She was terrified on arrival. We witnessed her heartbreaking cries. She was afraid of men,” Khan recalled. One of the biggest challenges the caregivers faced was gaining her trust. “I cannot put her condition into words.” Khan added.
To aid her recovery, the caregivers introduced another young camel named Callie. Her presence brought comfort to the injured Cammie, who tried standing on her three legs for the first time after seeing her new companion. “Cammie had been stuck in her small space for almost four to five months before Callie arrived,” Khan added. After treating the wound and completing initial recovery training, the shelter — Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project — arranged a prosthetic leg from a US-based firm so she could walk on all fours again. “We don’t force her to walk. After attaching it, we wait about 15 to 20 minutes. Then she stands up on her own and walks slowly,” Hussain explained.
Caregivers emphasize that full adaptation to the prosthetic limb may take15-20 days and Cammie will remain at the shelter permanently.

Over the course of the 1990s, an average of 20.5 million American children ages 7 to 17hopped on a bike six or more times a year. Now such scenes are rare. Data from an authoritative association prove that number has fallen by nearly half, to about 10.9 million in 2023, with under5% riding “frequently”.
With this decline, kids are losing more than a potential mode of transport. Biking supports children’s independence and overall health in a way that many activities cannot. Also, it’s much more affordable especially if you buy a used bike. Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit when they start getting around on two wheels. The research has shown that when children ride a bike in the open, parents feel more of a connection to their neighbors, and many people begin to feel safer.
As fewer kids go out, however, all those benefits are gone. Nancy Pullen-Seufert, the director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, said kids do want to bike, but conditions on many streets don’t exactly inspire confidence. The traffic in their neighborhood makes riding too dangerous or that their parents won’t let them go on their own. In many places, this fear is well founded. American roadways have gotten faster and busier. And over the past 30 years, the average U. S. passenger vehicle has gotten larger and heavier. These machines can be much more intimidating to people on bikes.
Children need space to bike. By adding more bike-friendly infrastructure (基础设施) — lower traffic speeds, separated bike lanes, calmer crossroads — local governments could encourage children and other residents to start riding again. Twice a year, when animals like bears and squirrels are either curling up for a deep sleep or stretching their way into spring, migratory birds are getting ready to take epic journeys over land and sea.
And in so doing, they play a crucial role in keeping nature in balance. As they fly from one place to another, pollinating plants, spreading seeds and controlling pests by eating insects and other invertebrates (无脊椎动物), they help to maintain ecosystem health, which in turn contributes to food security. And that’s not all. Francisco Rilla, a wildlife biologist and consultant to the UN, said migratory birds also serve as “bioindicators”. In other words, because they tend to avoid polluted areas, their movements provide useful information in the assessment of water and air quality.
Migrating birds use the sun, stars, coastlines and large bodies of water to guide them on their journeys across the world. But some places where they stop to rest and refuel along the coasts are being altered by floods connected to rising sea levels. Small crustaceans (甲科动物), which are an important food source for migratory birds, can struggle to build their shells and skeletons (骨架) in oceans made more acidic by having to absorb more carbon dioxide. And this has a knock-on effect on migratory birds. Without sufficient food, they are less likely to survive tough journeys or successfully reproduce.
Though humans often feed birds, Rilla said putting food out for migratory birds can do them more harm than good. If they are given bread and seeds meant for people, they might feel too full to eat the things that provide them with crucial nutrients. He added that putting food in places where it will be easy to spot could expose birds to predators. Instead, Rilla recommended helping these travelers by urging governments to expand the network of protected areas through international treaties.
