Scammers (骗子) are becoming tricky, turning to the Internet to better cheat their targets out of money. This includes using deep fakes (冒充者) to present themselves as someone else. Now, AI is being used in the fightback with Telecom Company O2 applying an AI granny in the action.
Daisy, an AI grandma created by British Telecom Company O2 as the cleverest scam fighter, is a new AI tool with the voice of a grandmother designed to talk with scammers and “waste as much of their time as possible”. Basically, she rambles on (絮叨) about anything and everything to keep them away from real people.
While Daisy may sound like a human, she is actually an AI large language model with the character application of a grandma. The company worked with known scam artists to train Daisy and used a method called Number Seeding to get Daisy’s phone number added to a list of online “mugs lists” — lists used by scammers targeting UK users. She functions by listening to the scammers and translating their voice to text. The AI then searches its large database to find a suitable reply, based on the specific scam training she’s received, and translates that text answer to speech for Daisy to reply. All this happens in seconds with no additional input needed.
The goal is to keep the scammer on the phone for as long as possible by trapping them in a lifelike, but lengthy conversation. “Daisy is turning the tables on scammers — outsmarting them at their own pitiless game simply by keeping them on the line,” Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud at O2, explained.
O2 also hopes to draw attention to scams by warning users to be careful about who they may be speaking to. “No matter how good someone on the other end of the phone may be, they aren’t always who you think they are,” Murray said. “In terms of tips and tricks, whether you’re shopping online, reviewing your emails, or receiving an out-of-the-blue phone call, it’s important to always remain watchful.”

According to the Associated Press, a recent experiment has shown that instances of phantom traffic jams can be reduced by linking cars into a single communication network via newer vehicles’ adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems.
An increasing number of cars now come equipped with sensors that can automatically slow down or speed up depending on the distance to the vehicle ahead. Researchers recently had 100 cars travel on a 15-mile section of Nashville’s I-24 between 6 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. each morning, with their smart cruise controls not only enabled but also interconnected. By creating a web of information from multiple cars at varying distances, the AI can adjust vehicles’ speeds while accounting for conditions far ahead.
It is important to note that this is not self-driving car technology, but rather an enhanced driver assistance system that can be further developed to create a network of shareable information for vehicles. As such, drivers could theoretically see such systems on the road long before fully autonomous vehicles arrive. “This is something we could realize soon,” explained Liam Pedersen, a deputy general manager for research at Nissan.

W: Not really, it came more from my own feeling. I needed to improve my skills further and reach a truly professional level. So it was a very personal decision.
M: That makes sense. Speaking of creating and not just performing, have you ever tried to plan the dance for a full show My friend tried it recently and found that it wasn’t just about teamwork; in fact, creating original work was far harder than he ever expected.
W: I completely agree with that. It’s a huge challenge to build a whole routine from nothing, with no one else’s steps to follow.
M: I can imagine. And on a different note, you’ve joined a lot of international competitions, right I’ve always heard they are great events for making professional connections and meeting people.
W: That’s true. You certainly can meet a lot of people there. But what impresses me most is that the atmosphere is just intensely competitive — everyone’s mainly there to win.

Sit down, everyone. And put your books away. We won’t need them. Today’s class is different. To start with, thanks for being kind to each other. I always notice everyone’s caring behaviour towards other classmates. And we can all learn to treat each other better. We all want to live in a happier world, right
I’m talking about being polite and how it makes life better for everyone. When I was your age, my dad taught me these simple rules. These rules improved my life in school and work, so I want to share them with you all as well.
First, never laugh at others when they make mistakes. Second, always let people speak and listen to them closely. And most importantly, treat others the way you want to be treated. No need to write these down. Instead, I’ll share a paper with these rules listed. Before we review the next rules, I’d like some of you to present a story with the class about a very polite person you know.
