Like almost every set of new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started taking pictures of their son, Noah, practically from the moment he was born.
When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd when she took his picture. The flash on their digital camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by something.
When Elizabeth mentioned the strange phenomenon to their doctor, she shone a light into Noah’s eye, saw the same white reflection, and immediately sent the family to an eye expert.
A white reflection instead of a red one is an obvious sign of eye cancer, and that is exactly what Noah had. He went through months of treatment, but doctors eventually could not save his eye. Retinoblastoma, the scientific name of Noah’s tumor, is treatable if discovered early.
Bryan Shaw couldn’t help but wonder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every baby picture of Noah he could find — thousands of them — and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. “By the time he was four months old, it was showing up in 25 percent of the pictures taken of him per month,” said Bryan, who was a chemistry professor at Baylor University in Texas.
It was too late for Noah’s eye, but Bryan was determined to put his insights to good use. He created a database that recorded the cancer’s appearance in every photo. He also collected photos and gathered the data from eight other children with retinoblastoma. Equipped with that data, he began to work with coworkers in Baylor’s computer science department to develop a smartphone app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of instrument for examining the eyes.
Called White Eye Detector, it is now available free of charge on Google Play and in Apple’s App Store. “I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this,” Bryan said. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only could this software save vision, but it can save lives.”
4. What led to the failure of Noah’s eye treatment
A.The oddness of the eye disease.
B.The lack of advanced equipment.
C.The ignorance of the doctor.
D.The delayed detection of the disease.
5. How could the app detect the eye disease
A.It could identify white eye with enough data.
B.It could compare the eyes in different pictures.
C.It could scan the database recorded by Bryan.
D.It could analyse the shape of different eyes.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Bryan
A.Creative and selfless.
B.Generous and brave.
C.Devoted and honest.
D.Traditional and determined.
7. What can be inferred from Bryan Shaw’s story
A.Parents’ awareness is key to early disease detection.
B.A personal tragedy can fuel scientific innovation.
C.Smartphone apps are replacing traditional medical tools.
D.Medical diagnoses should rely more on photographic evidence.

Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland’s volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Friday when small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.
WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because breathed-in particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.
Other experts, however, weren’t convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on people’s health and said WHO’s warnings were “hysterical”. They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is mainly made up of particles of volcanic rock, which is light grey to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause cough or other discomfort even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently floating above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say.
“Not all particles are created equal,” said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, “From a broader perspective, volcanic ash is not all that harmful.” And he said most Europeans’ exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.
Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. “The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven’t heard of any ill effects there,” he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was “over the top” and “a bit hysterical”.
8. What can you learn from paragraph 3
A.The volcanic ash had no impact on Europeans.
B.Other experts highly approved of WHO’s warnings.
C.The volcanic ash posed more risks than cigarette smoke.
D.The actual danger from the distant ash cloud was limited.
9. According to Ken Donaldson, who are most likely to be at risk due to the volcanic ash
A.Europeans living in big cities.
B.People who often smoke cigarettes.
C.Those staying outdoors for a long time.
D.People in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano.
10. What does the underlined word “hysterical” in the last paragraph most probably mean
A.Amazing.
B.Practical.
C.Valuable.
D.Overstated.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text
A.To criticize the WHO for spreading unnecessary panic.
B.To persuade the public to follow the WHO’s safety advice.
C.To present different expert views of a health risk.
D.To explain the chemical properties of volcanic ash.

AI has advanced significantly over the years. However, its current models largely ignore human psychology, such as emotional intelligence.
“The main focus of our work was how we could bring the emotional part of intelligence to AI,” says Saptarshi Das, associate professor at Penn State. “Human behavior is easy to observe but difficult to measure and that makes it difficult to replicate in a robot and make it emotionally intelligent. There is no real way right now to do that.”
Eating habits serve as a prime example of this emotional intelligence. While hunger is the physiological drive to eat, our choices of what to eat are influenced by our sense of taste. As Das explains, even when one is not hungry, the psychological desire can drive him or her to consume a sweet treat, rather than a piece of meat.
To grasp the complexities of taste, Penn State researchers looked to the human tongue, which converts chemical data into electrical signals sent to the brain’s gustatory cortex. In this brain region, complex neural networks shape our sense of taste. To imitate this, the team created an electronic “tongue”.
This technology can be adapted to recognize all primary taste characteristics, from sweet to salty. Looking ahead, the researchers see numerous applications, including AI-designed diets based on emotional preferences or tailored restaurant meal suggestions.
The team’s immediate goal is to expand the electronic tongue’s capacity. “We are trying to imitate the 10,000 or so taste receptors we have on our tongue that are each slightly different compared to the others, which enables us to distinguish between small differences in tastes,” says Das. “The example I think of is people who train their tongue and become a wine taster. Perhaps in the future, we can have an AI system that you can train to be an even better wine taster.”
Beyond taste, the team wants to broaden this concept to other senses, leading to a more comprehensive and emotionally intelligent AI system.
12. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
A.It is hard to make robots emotionally intelligent.
B.It is necessary to make robots emotionally intelligent.
C.Emotional intelligence is complex and difficult to observe.
D.Few researchers pay attention to emotional intelligence of AI.
13. What might this electronic tongue be applied to in the future
A.Judging the quality of people’s diets.
B.Designing a healthier diet plan for people.
C.Helping restaurants serve customers better.
D.Correcting people’s imbalanced eating preferences.
14. What is the team’s plan according to the last two paragraphs
A.Bringing more human senses into the AI system.
B.Making the electronic tongue available for everyone.
C.Improving people’s taste sensitivity with the electronic tongue.
D.Attracting the attention of other researchers to AI’s innovation.
15. What is the text mainly about
A.The future development trend of AI.
B.The advantage of the “electronic tongue”.
C.The progress in bringing emotional intelligence into AI.
D.The big role of AI in developing emotional intelligence.

Have you ever walked past a parked car on a hot day and felt the heat radiating off it It’s not your imagination. In urban environments, heat is absorbed and released by the sidewalks, buildings and other objects. Now, a new study reveals that an unexpected factor in urban warming is heat radiating from parked cars.
Márcia Matias of the University of Lisbon and her colleagues measured the air temperature around two cars—one black and one white—parked outside for more than 5 hours during daylight. Their measurements showed the black car raised the local air temperature by as much as 3.8°C compared to the nearby asphalt under a clear and sunny summer sky with temperatures of 36°C. Meanwhile, the white car had much smaller impacts on the surrounding air temperature.
The researchers explain that white vehicle paint reflects between 75% and 85% of incoming sunlight, whereas black vehicle paint absorbs most of the incoming sunlight, reflecting just only 5% to 10%. A car’s thin steel or aluminum skin can also heat up quickly under strong sunlight, unlike even very dark asphalt that is thicker and warms more slowly. “Now picture thousands of cars parked across a city, each one acting like a little heat source or a heat shield,” says Matias. “Their color can actually shift how hot the streets feel.”
The collective impact of hundreds of thousands or millions of cars in cities could significantly influence the urban heat island effect. The researchers calculated that repainting parked cars from dark to lighter colors could create cooler surfaces and lower near-surface air temperatures on sunny, low-wind days. Using the city of Lisbon as an example, the change could effectively increase the street-level reflectance of incoming sunlight from just 20% to nearly 40% in areas where parked cars cover more than 10% of the road. The researchers also note that using light-colored vehicles to reduce urban heat is a particularly novel strategy, and fleets of municipal vehicles, buses, taxis and delivery trucks are obvious candidates for getting light-colored makeovers.
16. What did the researchers find about the black car according to paragraph 2
A.It heated up the surface of the asphalt.
B.It cooled down faster than the white car.
C.It reflected more heat than the white car.
D.It raised the surrounding air temperature.
17. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 3
A.New methods used in the experiment.
B.Reasons behind the research findings.
C.The great significance of the research.
D.The limitation of the experiment’s results.
18. What do the researchers suggest
A.Increasing the thickness of car paint.
B.Establishing strict parking regulations.
C.Painting specific vehicles in light colors.
D.Promoting the use of public transportation.
19. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.Why Are Our Cities Getting Hotter
B.How Can We Make Our Cities cooler
C.What Is the Best Car Color for Summer
D.How Do Parked Cars Affect Urban Heat
