The Chinese dragon is far more than a common lucky symbol. The 2026 Chinese New Year will arrive on February 17. Although people said goodbye to the Wood Dragon Year in 2024, the traditional Chinese dragon still stays as an important cultural icon deeply rooted in Chinese civilization.
For thousands of years, this meaningful symbol has greatly shaped Chinese art, royal culture and social development. A large number of Chinese people proudly consider themselves descendants(后代) of the dragon. People have long been curious about where this magical creature came from and what spirit it truly carries.
Dragons take an important place in ancient Chinese creation legends. Old stories record that dragons once offered help to Pan Gu, the creator of the whole world. Another famous ancient tale tells about Nüwa, a great goddess with a dragon-like tail. She made the first human beings with mud and became one of the most respected gods. In folk belief, powerful dragons manage natural weather. They send rainfall to local farmland and make crops grow well. What’s more, dragons are believed to punish bad acts and guard kind people.
The dragon also stands for national unity. According to historical records, the Yellow Emperor combined different animal totems(图腾) of ancient tribes(部落) into one main totem based on snakes. After mixing body parts of other zodiac(生肖) animals, the unique image of the Chinese dragon finally came into being.
What makes Chinese culture richer is nine different dragon sons widely seen in old buildings and art works. Each dragon kid owns special abilities and stands for different spirits. Their different shapes and uses also show people’s different wishes in daily life.
Chinese dragons have totally different images compared with Western dragons. Western traditional stories describe dragons as cruel and greedy monsters. They always hide plenty of treasure and bring danger to humans. On the contrary, Chinese dragons are looked up to as sacred and fair creatures. They stand for good fortune, noble status, great wisdom and powerful protection for all Chinese people.

With simple practice, people can quickly learn to use chopsticks well. Many people from Asian countries pick up this skill at an early pared with knives and forks, chopsticks are more flexible and accurate. They can help people hold tiny food, scoop dishes and divide food into small pieces easily.
Now Asian food is popular all over the world, so more foreigners begin to use chopsticks. It is never too late for adults to learn this skill. With constant practice, everyone can use chopsticks skillfully in daily life.
Chopsticks first appeared in ancient China. Early stick-like objects were found in cultural sites dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years, yet they were not used for eating at that time. It was not until centuries later that chopsticks formally became daily tableware. Gradually, this tool spread to neighboring countries and formed the special chopsticks cultural circle. Still, some Asian nations prefer hands or forks instead of chopsticks.
It takes basic finger flexibility to use chopsticks. Beginners are advised to start with common wooden disposable chopsticks, which are easier to control. The core skill is to keep the lower chopstick fixed and only move the upper one. This pincer movement makes it convenient to catch different kinds of food. Those who feel difficult can choose special training chopsticks for practice.
Apart from using skills, people need to master proper chopsticks manners. It is rude to stand chopsticks upright in bowls, stab(戳) food with chopsticks or rub wooden chopsticks. In public dining, people should use serving tools rather than personal chopsticks to take food from shared plates.
What’s more, chopstick customs differ among Asian cultures. People in China, Japan and Vietnam usually lift bowls to eat rice, while Koreans think it impolite to do so and choose spoons instead. When having meals in different places, it is wise to watch local people’s behavior and ask questions politely.

The special show A Fresh New Look: Xu Guling’s Art Journey opened at Guangzhou Art Museum this July, drawing nearly 600,000 visitors. Its related new book launch was held recently, giving a full introduction to Xu’s art.
Born in Shanwei, Guangdong in 1943, Xu fell in love with local operas in his childhood. When he studied at the Affiliated High School of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, he watched hundreds of shows of over 50 opera types. He got used to sketching performers quickly during shows. In 1972, he published his first facial mask painting in a Guangzhou newspaper and began his long-term exploration of mask art.
In the 1980s, he moved to Hong Kong and travelled across more than 30 countries for over 20 years. He learned Western painting skills and mixed them with traditional Chinese opera masks and ink art, forming his special mixed-style art. He always kept the root of Eastern culture in his works.
Around 2000, he settled back in Guangzhou and reached a new creative peak. Gradually, he gave up detailed stage scenes and turned to abstract forms. 范文
The Lion Dance I Like Best
Among all the traditional Lingnan cultures, I like the Lion Dance best.
Why do I like it First, the Lion Dance is very exciting. The dancers wear colorful lion costumes and move like real lions. They jump high and stand on poles. The loud drum beats make everyone feel happy and energetic. Second, the Lion Dance brings good luck and drives away bad spirits. People often watch it during the Spring Festival or the opening of a new shop.
To inherit this great culture, I will do three things. First, I will learn the basic steps and drumming from my uncle, who is a lion dancer. Second, I will watch more lion dance shows and share them with my classmates. Third, I will join the school’s lion dance club to practice with other students. I hope one day I can perform on the street and let more people love the Lion Dance.
The Lion Dance shines in Lingnan, and I want to help it shine forever.
