Fisherman:Since I must die, I must. But before I die, answer me one question.
Genie: All right, but be quick.
Fisherman:Were you really in the jar You are so big and the jar is so small that it could hardly hold one of your feet.
Genie:Of course I was in the jar. Don't you believe me
Fisherman:No, and I won't until I've seen you in the jar with my own eyes.
Narrator:When he heard this, the Genie changed into smoke. Slowly the smoke went back into the jar. When all of it was in the jar, the fisherman quickly put the lid on and threw it back into the sea.

Unit 8 Section B Project+Reading Plus
1. It promised me whatever I wanted if I set it free.
It promised me whatever I wanted.
② promise to do sth
He promised to help me.
She promised that she would come.
whatever = anything that,在从句中充当成分
whatever I wanted = anything that I wanted
It promised me 【whatever I wanted】
Whatever you do, don’t give up. = No matter what you do, don’t give up.
让步状语从句:whatever = no matter what,二者可互换
2.Again, the golden fish granted his wish.

搭配:grant one’s wish /grant a request

The school granted him a scholarship.
2) grant sth to sb
The government granted money to poor families.
I grant that you are right.

take … for granted 认为……
Don’t take your parents’ love for granted.
The boss granted him leave.
3. At last, fortune smiles upon us! What did you wish for
Fortune smiles upon us.
同义:smile on sb
例:Luck smiled on her that day.
once upon a time 从前(童话固定开头)
look upon 看待
就”,upon + 名词 = as soon as
Upon arriving home, he called me.
第一处:动词 wish(问句 What did you wish for )
What do you wish for 你想要什么心愿?
I wish for happiness.
Wish you good luck!

1.B 2.A 3.A 4.C 5.D
根据第一段中的“After much discussion, they came to the conclusion that the cage was built too low. A staff member suggested, ‘Let’s raise (增加) the height of the cage from 1 to 2 meters. That should stop them!’”
根据第三段中的“They were determined to go to all lengths and do everything possible to solve the problem, and this time, they decided to raise the cage to 10 meters.” 由此可推测,go to all lengths意为“竭尽全力,不遗余力”,与Try one’s best意思相近。故选A。
根据最后一段袋鼠的话“If they continue forgetting to close the cage door, they could raise it to a hundred meters, and we would still be out here having an excellent time!” 故选A。
