Mark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shining new computer enviously. Jason was determined not to go against their father's wishes but Mark was more adventurous than his brother. He loved experimenting and his aim was to become a scientist like his father.
"Dad will be really mad if he finds out you've been playing with his new computer." Jason said, "He told us not to touch it."
"He won't find out." Mark said, "I'll just have a quick look and shut it down."
Mark had been scolded before for touching his father's equipment. But his curiosity was difficult to control and this new computer really puzzled him.
It was a strange-looking machine - one his dad had brought home from the laboratory where he worked. "It's an experimental model," his father had explained, "so don't touch it under any circumstances." But his father's warning only served to make Mark more curious.
Without any further thought, Mark turned on the power switch. The computer burst into life and seconds later, the screen turned into colors, shifting and changing and then two big white words appeared in the centre of the screen: "SPACE TRANSPORTER."
"Yes!" Mark cried excitedly, "It's a computer game. I knew it! Dad's only been pretending to work. He's really been playing games instead."
A new message appeared on the screen: "ENTER NAMES
VOYAGER 1: ...
VOYAGER 2: ..."
Mark's fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in both of their names.
"INPUT ACCEPTED. START TRANSPORT PROGRAM. AUTO-RETRIEVE INITIATED."
The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.
"I think we'd better shut it off, Mark," Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened.
But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of dazzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow, until they themselves seemed to be glowing. Then it died down just as suddenly as it had burst into life. And the boys were no longer there.
On the screen, the letters changed. "TRANSPORT SUCCESSFUL. DESTINATION: MARS. RETRIEVE DATE: 2025."

The beautiful skill of leaf-vein embroidery in Tongren city, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the main types of embroidery in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) and has been used to share messages among various ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Yang Li, a master of this craft, has combined traditional embroidery styles from the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in her work on leaves, mixing traditional design with modern techniques. Leaf-vein embroidery holds high value as a collectible art due to its complex process, which includes choosing and drying the leaves, then creating and embroidering the patterns.
Yang noted that in the past decade, only around 20 people in Tongren have been able to fully complete the whole leaf-embroidery process on their own. Because of the tough, hard work involved and the low number of high-quality pieces made, it's challenging to keep this traditional skill alive. "I have introduced this style to universities, communities and villages and chosen skilled embroiderers to learn leaf-vein embroidery, but very few have kept going," Yang said.
In 2011, she opened a processing center, creating jobs for more than 500 women, including women from villages and people with disabilities. As a result, almost every embroiderer now has a collection of handmade items that could fill a museum. "I feel a duty and a sense of urgency. In my lifetime, I must improve and pass on this craft," she said. In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou Embroidery Intangible Cultural Heritage Industry Base and has since used social media to share leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student, Yang Xinyu.
"Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure," said Yang Xinyu. "As a young person inspired by my teacher Yang Li, I am committed to carrying on this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy."
28. What is stated in the article about leaf-vein embroidery
A. It has a history of more than 1,500 years.
B. It can now involve modern techniques.
C. It is widely practiced across Guizhou province.
D. It became popular during the Song Dynasty.
29. Why is it challenging to maintain the leaf-vein embroidery skill
A. It requires rare materials.
B. It relies on older artisans.
C. It possesses little artistic value.
D. It demands great skill and effort.
30. What has Yang Li achieved through her efforts
A. Introducing embroidery courses in colleges.
B. Simplifying the embroidery process.
C. Increasing demand for embroidery products.
D. Providing jobs for disadvantaged groups.
31. Which of the following best describes Yang Li
A. Optimistic and humble.
B. Creative and responsible.
C. Determined and careful.
D. Generous and humorous.

The ocean sustains all life on our planet. It provides food to eat and oxygen to breathe, while playing a key role in making our climate less extreme. But the ocean is becoming considerably warmer, affecting its ability to sustain life. The high temperatures seen around the Mediterranean this year are indicative of rising global temperatures. Research found the sea temperatures recorded in the Mediterranean over the period 2015 - 2019 were the highest since the recording began in 1982.
Much of the research on ocean heatwaves finds that they affect certain habitats particularly strongly, including coral reefs, seagrass and seaweed. Ocean heatwaves were found to be responsible for the loss of up to 80% of the population of some Mediterranean species between 2015 and 2019.
A mass death event is a single, terrible incident that rapidly destroys large numbers of a species. Over two-thirds of the deaths of ocean creatures occurring on the hard sea floor were in the waters with a depth of only 0-25 meters, which are subject to particularly intense warming and are home to some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
Foundation species are critical in structuring an ecosystem. They act as nursery grounds, provide protection against enemies, and serve as a food source. Foundation species are the key to sustaining biodiversity, and their loss will have impacts on other species. As foundation species, the loss of corals, seagrass and seaweed is particularly concerning.
Additionally, ocean heatwaves often result in displacement. Evidence suggests that the exceptional temperatures seen across the Mediterranean this summer may be driving extensive mass displacement. In Greece, scientists have observed a huge increase of invasive species from warmer waters. This includes the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, both of which are poisonous, and carry the potential to cause considerable ecological damage.
Within some branches of the scientific community, the recent intensity and frequency of ocean heatwaves suggests we have arrived at a "climate endgame". This involves preparation for the full consequences of widespread ocean species death, if emissions are not controlled. The likely damaging Mediterranean ocean heatwaves of this year will only add fuel to such discussions.
32. What can we infer about the Mediterranean
A. Its worsening ability to sustain life is still being ignored.
B. Its high temperatures are causing damage to human life.
C. Its ocean life is increasingly threatened by climate change.
D. Its surroundings are worsening much faster than expected.
33. Where do the deaths of ocean life tend to happen
A. On the hard sea floor of breae waters.
B. On the hard sea floor of deep waters.
C. On the hard sea floor of shallow waters.
D. On the hard sea floor of cold waters.
34. What do we know about the displacement of ocean life
A. It is damaging the ocean ecosystem.
B. It is responsible for global temperatures.
C. It is easily influenced by climate change.
D. It is a good way to maintain the ecology.
35. What is the passage mainly about
A. The causes of ocean heatwaves around the Mediterranean.
B. The main natural threats to ocean life in the Mediterranean.
C. The advice on dealing with Mediterranean ocean heatwaves.
D. The impacts of ocean heatwaves on life in the Mediterranean.

阅读短文,从七个选项中选最佳五项,两项多余。
"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones
The Dutch company WeTransfer conducted a survey of 20,000 creatives from 197 countries and regions. ____36____ The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.
"____37____ However, it seems that while working together is essential to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," noted Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor-in-chief. "Send people off with the time and space to think properly and the quality of their ideas will probably improve," Alderson added.
In fact, Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, also sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.
However, most companies fail to give their employees a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. ____38____ More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier to good thinking. That's a worrying number given almost 90 percent of participants work in creative fields which rise and fall on the power of good ideas.
Independent thinking is also crucial when making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in the survey say they trust their own instincts and research when evaluating an idea. ____39____
Though the growing body of evidence suggests brainstorming may not result in the best ideas, it isn't entirely useless. ____40____ If nothing else, practicing brainstorming promotes team cohesion and trust.
A. It proved the risks of this form of group thinking
B. Only 18 percent will run an idea past colleagues and friends
C. They include writers, musicians, photographers and podcasters
D. In the creative world, we hear an awful lot about collaboration
E. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity
F. They should place as much, if not more, faith in the individual imagination
G. A Northern Illinois University study emphasized its value as a team-building activity

Nina walked along the road with a sad look on her face. Next Saturday was her friend Betty's birthday but she did not have anything nice to wear to the party. Her father had just lost his job, so she couldn't ask for a new dress.
Nina decided to wear an old dress that had been her favorite for many years but had become a little too short for her now."I'll ask the tailor to increase the length." Nina said to herself.
The tailor, however, refused to do so. "The dress is too old. Any alteration won't work for it. Besides, I have too many other orders. My hands are full."
With a sad heart, she walked out of the tailor's shop. "What am I to do " she thought.
Just as she was about to go home, she saw a lady getting out of a car not far away and walking toward the bank in a hurry. The lady opened her handbag to take out some papers and her wallet fell on the ground. Unaware of it, she went into the bank.
Nina ran and picked up the wallet. There were so many people inside the bank that she decided to wait on the steps.
After a long time, the lady came out. Nina handed her the wallet that she had dropped. The lady could not believe it. The little girl had been waiting for her for so long to hand her the wallet. She looked at the contents in it and everything was just the way she had left it.
"Thank you, sweetheart. What is your name and where are you going Can I drop you home " the lady asked Nina softly.
Nina told the lady her name and that she was going home. The lady invited Nina to get into the car. On the way, Nina told her what had happened to her in the tailor's shop. The lady looked at the dress and then at Nina. She was the owner of a boutique that stitched clothes for children and young adults.
"Come to my shop and collect your dress tomorrow," the lady told Nina.

She lengthened the skirt with soft lace and added lovely small flowers on the collar. Nina was overjoyed and wanted to pay her, but the lady refused, saying it was a reward for her honesty.
On Saturday, Nina wore the dress with a fresh new design to Betty's birthday party. All her friends praised how pretty she looked. Betty asked where she got such a special dress.
