Student Visual Arts Exhibition
Since 2016, the Autry Museum of the American West has presented annual exhibitions of student artwork around an inspiring theme. Each fall, a new theme is announced and a call for submissions (提交)is sent out. INSTRUCTIONS & SCHEDULE
Submissions are accepted from October 1, 2025 to January 30, 2026.
* Applications must be submitted online, and completed artwork delivered or mailed to the Autry Museum: (4700 Wester Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027).
Results will be shared by Friday, February 27, 2026.
Selected artwork will be on view from Saturday April 18 to Sunday, May 31, 2026. It cannot be removed before Tuesday, June 9, 2026, and must be picked up by Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

ARTWORK GUIDELINES
Only 2D artwork is accepted, including but not limited to: watercolor, mixei media, oil, drawing, photography, etc. All entries must be original and labeled with the student' s name, school, and teacher. Artwork must measure 5 x 7, 8x 10, 11 x 14, 16 x 20, 20 x 30, or 22 x 32 inches. All selected entries are eligible for awards.

By the time she turned 61, Amy Laskey had gained a lot of time. After years of working full-time in finance, raising a son, and caring for an elderly parent, she retired. In place of those duties Laskey started volunteering. She now participates in conversation practice for a language class, ushers for music venues, and once did financial coaching at a social services organization, which eventually turned into a part-time job.
When it comes to volunteering, older adults tend to dominate. Those 65 and older are two to three times more likely to volunteer than adults aged 25 to 34, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. As with Laskey, older adults are more likely to have spare time to devote to causes unrelated to work or family.
But volunteering is not just a way to fill time. Research shows that volunteering provides older adults with real physical and mental health benefits.
Las emphasized enjoying the feeling of usefulness and responsibility volunteering provides. These are two elements that contribute to a sense of purpose, which is often ignored in well-being, says Eric Kim, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. His studies show that a higher purpose in life is linked to reduced risks of heart attacks and strokes, better grip strength and faster walking speed. He and his team have also found that older adults who volunteer feel more optimism and less depression and loneliness. Other research connects frequent volunteering to lower blood pressure and slower biological aging.
A sense of purpose doesn't need to come from volunteering or a job to benefit your health, adds Kim. It can also be found in caring for family or tending a garden. Purpose doesn't need to be a single life goal in life - "all of these things can add up, " he says.

Renato Zanelli crossed the finish line, pulling 140 pounds of trash (垃圾). The strongest challenger was Ortega Garcia, a Spanish teacher who arrived at the finish pulling a fridge, a dishwasher, and a hos of other odds and ends. "The competition is intense this year, " said Zanelli. Now 71, he used his energy and skills to find trash to compete against athletes half his age. "I' m here to help the environment, but I also want to win. "
At the recent World Plogging Championship in Genoa, more than 70 athletes from 16 countries tested their talents in this northern Italian city. During the six hours of the race, contestants collect points by carrying as much trash across the finish line as they can. Trash gets scored based on its weight and environmental impact. A mobile app ensures runners stay within the race' s permitted area. Athletes have to pass through checkpoints in the hilly park. They are issued gloves and four plastic bags to fill with trash, and are also allowed to carry up to three large finds, such as tires or TVs.
Events that combine running and trash-collecting go back to at least 2010. The sport gained traction about seven years ago when a Swede, Erik Ahlstrom, coined the name plogging, a combination of plocka upp, Swedish for "pick up", and "jogging". "If you don" t have an appealing name, you might as well not exist, " said Roberto Cavallo, a longtime plogger. From then on, plogging has even won the favor of foreign athletes.
This year, contestants collected more than 6, 600 pounds of trash, including bikes, baby seats, chairs, TVs, a toilet, and many other items. "This park hasn' t been this clean since the 15th century, " said Genoa' s ambassador for sport, Roberto Giordano.
