For centuries, lacquer fans (漆扇) have been loved for their beauty and cultural value.
Lacquer fans are special fans from China, and their history dates back to the Han Dynasty. Later, lacquer fans became one of the top collections in the art world in the Tang Dynasty. Lacquer is a natural varnish (清漆) taken from the lacquer tree. It was first used to coat (覆盖) wooden objects to protect them from water and insects. Interestingly, ancient workers discovered its artistic characteristics by accident when colorful patterns naturally formed on the water. Over time, workers began to use lacquer to make and decorate fans.
Lacquer fans are made of bamboo or wooden frames. Traditionally, they are painted with different themes and patterns, such as landscapes, flowers and birds, and figures, to make them more beautiful. Although the methods of making fans continue to develop, skilled workers still use traditional techniques to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among young people, which is considered a new form of expression of lacquer art. Instead of using traditional tools such as brushes, lacquer fan painting is done with only the lacquer and water. The process is quite simple yet filled with artistic possibilities. First, people freely choose a fan and the colors they want to use. Then they carefully drop the colored lacquer into the water. With gentle stirring (搅拌) using a thin tool, the colors blend and dance like ink in a Chinese watercolor painting, creating special shapes. Next, put the bamboo fan in the water for a few seconds and that’s it.

It was a happy time for me, but there were many dangers because of my small size. There are some incidents (事件) that I remembered clearly.
Every morning Glumdalclitch carried my box to the window. One day she carried me to the window as usual, and then she left me there. Some huge wasps came in through the window, and entered the box. They were the size of birds in England, and they were very fierce (凶猛的). I was afraid of them. I took out my sword and fought them. I killed four of them. Luckily, the others flew away.
Another dangerous moment that I remembered was this: Glumdalclitch left me in the garden one day, and the weather was very bad. First it rained, and then it hailed (下冰雹) very hard. The hailstones were the size of tennis balls, and they hurt me badly. I tried to hide under a tree, but I was still hit by some of them.
Another danger came from an idea that the Queen had. She knew that I liked boats, and she ordered one of her servants to make a little boat for me. The servant put the boat into a tank of water on the table. I spent many hours in this boat. One day, however, a frog jumped out of the water into the boat. I thought the boat would sink, and I was afraid. I was lucky, and I managed to push the frog out of the boat.

Dear Alice,
Great changes have taken place in my hometown over the years. I’m Li Mei. I study at Sunshine Middle School. In the past, roads were narrow and muddy. People lived in old houses and travelled by bike or on foot. Now roads are wide and clean. People live in big bright houses. They travel by bus or taxi, and most families have cars.
I love travelling. Last year I visited Nanjing and saw the longest and best-kept city wall. I also went to Luoyang to see peonies. I like online travel, especially visiting museums. Last week I visited Dunhuang online. Reading opens our minds. My favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
I hope to learn more about different cultures.
Best wishes,
Li Mei
