Last month, our class put on a play for the school’s Art Festival. The topic was friendship, which we thought was 31 , because it’s one of the most important things in life. We started to 32 after class: some wrote the lines, others chose the music.
Our teacher, Ms. Li, asked me to play the main role—a shy girl who had trouble making friends. At first, I felt 33 , afraid of forgetting lines. 34 Ms. Li said, “Believe in yourself. Practice makes perfect.” Every day after class, we practiced together. Some helped me with my lines 35 , others created stage props (道具). Once, I forgot a long part of my lines. I felt so sad and wanted to 36 up. But my best friend Lucy said, “Let’s practice again until you get it right.” Her words encouraged me. As the play day got closer, we practiced 37 —staying after school to run through it twice. On the final day, I wore my costume and stood backstage. My hands were shaking, but I remembered Ms. Li’s words and took a deep breath.
When the curtain went up, I spoke 38 any mistakes. When the play ended, everyone stood up and 39 loudly. I felt proud of myself and my class. Later, I grew more confident. I learned teamwork can make challenges smaller. Most importantly, courage isn’t the absence of fear, but 40 bravely when you’re afraid. This is a great 41 of my junior high school. A few days later, our class got a special 42 . We were called “Best Teamwork”. We hugged and shouted with joy. Ms. Li smiled, “Your hard work made this 43 successful.”
This play taught me much. Friendship is about helping through hard times. I’m glad I didn’t give up. Now, facing challenges, I know I have 44 to go on. Finally, I want to say that everyone can achieve their dreams if 45 work hard.

Saihanba is China’s largest man-made forest. It lies to the south of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区). Saihanba means “beautiful and high mountains”.
Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty made it a royal (皇家的) hunting place because it was home to beautiful forests, green grasslands, clear lakes and different kinds of wild animals. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival. The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public. After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into a grey desert. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared with only one tree left. The tree is now famous as “the Tree of Honour”.
On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba. In February, 1962, the plans were made and more than 120 foresters joined 242 local people in Saihanba to begin rebuilding it. Over the next 55 years, those first tree-planters fought against many difficulties to continue planting trees. For two long years, I lived the life of a slave (奴隶). I wanted to run away, but it was never possible. My master liked to go fishing in a little boat, and he always took me with him. A man called Moely, and a young boy also went with us.
One day my master said to us, “Some of my friends want to go fishing tomorrow. Get the boat ready.” So we put much food and drink on the boat, and the next morning, we waited for my master and his friends. But when my master arrived, he was alone. “My friends don’t want to go fishing today,” he said to me, “But you go with Moely and the boy, and catch some fish for our supper tonight.” “Yes, master,” I answered quickly, but inside I was excited, my chance came!
We took the boat out to sea. For a time, we fished quietly, and then I moved carefully behind Moely and knocked him into the water. “Swim”! I cried. “Swim to the beach”!
My master liked to shoot (射击) seabirds and so there were guns on the boat. Quickly, I took one of these guns. Moely was swimming after the boat and I shouted at him, “Go back to the shore, or I’ll shoot you through the head!” So Moely turned and swam back to the shore as quickly as possible. Then I said to the boy, “Xury, if you help me, I’ll be a good friend to you. If you don’t help me, I’ll push you into the sea, too.” But Xury was happy to help me. “I’ll go all over the world with you,” he cried.
I wanted to sail to the Canary Islands, but I was afraid to go too far from the shore. And so we sailed on south for some days. We had very little water, and it was a dangerous country here, with many wild animals. Once I used a gun to shoot a wild animal. I didn’t know what animal it was, but it made a good meal. Later we managed to get more food and water, and we sailed on. Eleven days later we came near the Cape Verde Islands. Suddenly Xury saw a ship, we called and shouted and sailed our little boat as fast as possible. But the ship didn’t see us. Then I remembered the gun which made lots of smoke. Luckily, the ship saw us and turned.
The Portuguese captain listened to my story. He was going to Brazil and agreed to help me. He bought my boat, and Xury, too. At first, I didn’t want to sell Xury as a slave, after all our dangerous adventures together. But Xury was happy to go to the captain and the captain was a good man. “In ten years’ time”, he said, “Xury can go free.”
When we arrived in Brazil three weeks later, I said goodbye to the captain and Xury, left the ship, and…

Teenagers these days depend on their parents too much. According to a survey, we find that only 20% of teenagers do chores at home. It is clear that most teenagers don’t make the bed, clean the floor or cook meals. They think it’s the parents’ job to provide a comfortable house for them. In addition, to get into a good high school or a good university, teenagers should treat their schoolwork seriously.
A change is coming. Our government has tried to stress the importance of hard-working spirit education. Schools are trying to introduce hard-working spirit education into the school activities. For students, some basic life skills will be trained in class.
Teenagers with basic life skills can have a strong sense of responsibility. Good life skills will make teenagers smart persons too. For example, teenagers need good planning, skillful cooking, control of temperature and a good nose so that they can make a delicious meal.
All these need to start early. Only in this way will teenagers have a better future.
