What will you do when one of the few bookstores in your neighborhood shuts down If you’re Latanya DeVaughn, you will make a new and improved one! As a mom and writer, she had always dreamed of opening her own bookstore, so after watching another close its doors for good, she saw her chance.
While Latanya said every neighborhood deserved a bookstore, actually making it happen simply wasn’t possible. What she came up with instead was to transform a bus into a bookmobile! With the help of her community, she raised funds for her dream and, at the end of 2021, it came true! Bronx Bound Books rolled out in style as a bus with orange cube bookshelves. “People love the way it smells,” Latanya added. “One woman said the wood smell makes her feel like she’s at home.”
Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 30,000 new and used books, it has more room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure to prepare books with a variety of characters, so all readers can see themselves in the pages. Of course, her collection also features works of famous Black authors like James Baldwin and Alice Walker. “It’s meant to be that way,” she explained, “because I remember going to bookstores and having to look through books just to find someone I felt I could identify with.”
Setting up her bookstore in a new spot each day, Latanya is doing her part to ensure that everyone in the neighborhood will be exposed to books. That’s what Bronx Bound Books is for. “I can’t open up a bookstore on every comer, but I can probably pop up on tons of different comers,” she said.
Thanks to Latanya and her Bronx Bound Books, the town is becoming a heaven for book lovers day by day. I’m sure that the little bookstore will continue to develop quickly!

NASA’s Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon by the mid-2020s, including the first woman and the next man. Unlike the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, which focused on short stays, Artemis plans to establish a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface. The Gateway — a small space station orbiting the Moon — will serve as a hub for astronauts traveling to and from the lunar surface and deeper space.
One of the key goals is to explore the Moon’s south pole, where scientists believe there may be frozen water in permanently shadowed craters (坑). This water could be used for drinking, growing food, and even producing rocket fuel. Additionally, the lunar surface offers a unique environment for testing technologies needed for future missions to Mars and beyond. The low gravity (重力) — and lack of atmosphere make it an ideal place to test new spacecraft, life support systems, and radiation shielding.
Critics argue that the cost of such programs is too high, with billions of dollars spent on space exploration while many issues on Earth remain unsolved. However, supporters point out that space research has led to numerous technological advancements that benefit daily life, such as GPS, medical imaging, and improved water purification systems. They also believe that expanding humanity’s presence in space is essential for the long-term survival of our species.
8. What is the main difference between the Artemis program and the Apollo missions
A.Artemis will send more astronauts to the Moon.
B.Artemis plans for long-term human presence on the Moon.
C.Artemis focuses on scientific experiments rather than exploration.
D.Artemis aims to land on the Moon’s far side.
9. Why is the Moon’s south pole a key exploration target
A.It has the most favorable landing conditions.
B.It may contain frozen water which is highly valuable.
C.It is the closest area to Earth on the Moon.
D.It has been unexplored by previous missions.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards space exploration
A.Critical of its high costs.
B.Doubtful about its practical benefits.
C.Supportive of its long-term value.
D.Neutral without personal opinion.
11. What can be inferred from the passage
A.The Artemis program will be completed by 2025.
B.Water on the Moon has already been confirmed.
C.Space technologies often have practical Earth applications.
D.Mars will be the next target after the Apollo missions.

Winter, with its shorter days and longer nights, naturally invites us to slow down, seek comfort, and adopt a gentler rhythm in our daily lives. Interestingly, adjusting our eating patterns — specifically, having dinner earlier during these months — can contribute significantly to our physical and mental well-being. According to health insights from sources such as The Conversation and The Jerusalem Post, shifting your last meal to an earlier time in winter can offer multiple benefits, from supporting metabolism (新陈代谢) to lifting mood.
This idea is rooted in our body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This natural cycle is closely tied to sunlight exposure, regulating hormones (激素), sleep, and digestion. In winter, daylight diminishes earlier, signaling the body to begin slowing down its functions sooner. Eating late in the evening can conflict with this rhythm, potentially upsetting metabolic processes. By finishing dinner earlier — ideally between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, or at least before 8:00 pm — you allow your body time to digest food before sleep. This practice can help maintain healthier blood sugar levels and improve sleep quality, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep and improved overnight recovery.
Furthermore, regular late-night eating has been linked to risks such as weight gain and metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. An earlier dinner helps the body process nutrients more efficiently and reduces the likelihood of metabolic stress. For individuals with busy schedules, a strict early dinner may not always be possible; however, aiming to eat between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm offers a flexible and still beneficial option.
Mood regulation is another important aspect. Reduced sunlight in winter can lower serotonin levels — a key hormone that helps stabilize mood. Eating earlier, combined with regular physical activity, supports better energy regulation and may help ease seasonal low mood. Additionally, keeping a consistent eating window and timing meals around exercise can enhance overall daily rhythm and promote a sense of routine, which is especially valuable during the darker, quieter winter months.
12. What does the underlined word “diminishes” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Dies down.
B.Grows stronger.
C.Comes up.
D.Stays stable.
13. What time is recommended for busy people to have dinner
A.5:00 pm—7:00 pm.
B.6:00 pm—8:00 pm.
C.Before 5:00 pm.
D.After 8:00 pm.
14. What can be concluded about consistent late-night eating
A.It benefits metabolic processes.
B.It is acceptable for busy people.
C.It helps regulate circadian rhythm.
D.It may harm physical and mental health.
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Why Winter Habits Improve Sleep Quality.
B.How You Can Adapt to Winter’s Shorter Days.
C.Why You Should Eat Dinner Earlier in Winter.
D.How Circadian Rhythm Affects Eating Times.

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else on the earth. We wished for one every time we threw coins in a fountain or watched the evening star drop behind the trees. However, our mother believed that we were still too thoughtless to take on the task of raising a pet. She had witnessed our forgetfulness on household chores and getting into small conflicts. In her eyes, these were signs that we lacked the necessary responsibility.
One summer night, as we sat together on the roof, Josie saw something. She pointed down toward a dark shadow, “What’s that ”
For one astonishing second, Josie and I stared at each other. Then we rushed down onto the doorway. There in our yard stood a black dog. Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. The dog came to us slowly, taking a few steps forward, then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. She was so skinny that I could just feel every bone, and her coat was messy.
“We’re going to have a dog!” My inside was full of excitement, just like before Christmas or our birthday.
“What’s a good name ” said Josie.
The perfect name wrote itself in my mind, “Shadow!”
The next day, we piled together all the pocket money we had to buy all kinds of dog foods and hid it in various places because we were afraid Mom wouldn’t approve that if she knew we were feeding a homeless dog.
That night, after our parents were asleep, we silently slipped downstairs to feed Shadow. We carefully poured the dog food into the bowl, trying to make as little noise as possible. Shadow, who had been waiting eagerly by our side, wagged (摇晃) her tail. As we placed the bowl on the floor, a creaking (吱吱的) sound filled the house. Suddenly, the kitchen light was switched on, illuminating the room and revealing our shocked faces.

第二节 读后续写范文
It was our mother, standing there surprisingly. She glanced at the thin dog and our nervous faces without anger. We lowered our heads and explained how we found Shadow and how we loved her deeply. We begged Mom not to send her away, promising we would take full care of her. After a long silence, Mom sighed softly and said she would think about it seriously.
Mom decided to give us a chance to prove we could be responsible owners. From then on, Josie and I split all dog work. We fed Shadow, bathed her and cleaned her house every day without being reminded. We also saved pocket money for her vaccines and toys. Seeing our constant efforts, Mom finally agreed to keep Shadow permanently. We learned that love for a pet comes along with endless responsibility.
