Lin Yutang’s The Importance of Living is a humorous and philosophical (哲学的) exploration of the art of living. The book is a reflection of Lin Yutang’s view that true happiness can only be found in the small pleasures of everyday life. In the book, he challenges traditional concepts of success and happiness, arguing that the pursuit of wealth and fame can lead to a life of stress and unhappiness. Instead, he encourages readers to embrace their own unique habits and talents, and to find joy and meaning in their everyday experiences.
The book is divided into several sections, each of which explores a different aspect of the art of living. In the section “Sensations”, for example, Lin Yutang describes the pleasure of eating, drinking, and sleeping, and he encourages readers to take time to enjoy these experiences. Offshore oil leaks have caused some of the worst man-made disasters in history. And while adding a whirl (漩涡) of fire to the mix might sound like the opposite of a good solution, new research has found it might be the best way to clean up our mess.
When dealing with major oil leaks, emergency responders often set fire to the floating oil on the ocean’s surface, creating “on-site” fire pools that stop the oil from spreading further. But while this protects the marine environment, such fires send huge clouds of smoke and poisonous smoke into the atmosphere.
Taking inspiration from an unusual 2003 incident in Kentucky — where a Bourbon Whisky leak sent 800,000 gallons up in flames, circling into a 30 m fire whirl on a lake — Professor Elaine Oran and her team began to wonder whether the same process could be used for good. So the team constructed a 4.8 m-tall, three-walled triangular structure at a fire training facility in Texas, with a pool of raw oil floating on water at its centre. When lit, it produced a nearly 5.2 m fire whirl.
The first large-scale experiment shows fire whirls burn oil leaks faster and cleaner than fire pools, proving their game-changing potential for ocean pared to conventional fire pools, it burned through oil 40% faster, cut smoke production by 40%, and consumed up to 95% of the fuel. The secret is in the whirl. Rather than spreading outward, the vortex (涡流) breathes in oxygen from all sides — burning hotter and more completely.
But employing that power is easier said than done. Fire whirls are temperamental; too much wind and the column collapses, too little airflow control and it returns to a conventional fire pool.
Despite this, Oran said achieving the “Goldilocks Zone” in the field is “very realistic”. “This study is more than just an experiment. It’s a brief view into a future where fire isn’t a force of destruction, but a tool to protect our oceans and planet,” she said.
28. What is the disadvantage of traditional oil burning
A.It fails to stop oil from spreading.
B.It’s difficult to operate on site.
C.It destroys marine life seriously.
D.It causes serious air pollution.
29. Why did Elaine Oran’s team carry out the experiment
A.To figure out the cause of the Kentucky accident.
B.To test whether fire whirls can clean oil leaks better.
C.To acquire more experience for fire training in Texas.
D.To prove the conventional fire pools are not reliable.
30. What does the underlined word “temperamental” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Difficult to control.
B.Costly to produce.
C.Extremely powerful.
D.Naturally changing.
31. What conclusion can be drawn about the fire whirl technique
A.It’s been actually used in real oil leak accidents.
B.It needs testing in some small-scale experiments.
C.It will eventually replace other cleanup methods.
D.It has promising potential in ocean conservation.

“I write to find out what I’m thinking,” wrote the great American journalist John Dos Passos. Anyone engaged in writing understands this truth: the act of writing transforms half-formed ideas into precise, logical thought. What sounds coherent (有条理的) when spoken often appears weak and illogical when committed to paper.
A recent MIT study provides convincing scientific evidence for this claim. Researchers used wearable (可穿戴的) brain scanners to compare students who wrote essays independently with those using AI assistance. The findings were clear: AI-assisted writers “consistently under-performed at brain, verbal, and behavioral levels.” They demonstrated (显示,证明) that we need to write in order to think deeply.
This research emerges (出现) at a critical historical moment for literacy (读写能力). Childhood reading has reached record lows, with nearly half of British adults not reading a single book last year. Adult literacy is declining or making no progress across most OECD countries. Notably, average IQs have begun to decline since the 1980s, along with reasoning (推理的) and problem-solving abilities — a trend that is unlikely to be random.
Walter Ong’s influential (有影响力) work “Orality and Literacy” illuminates why writing is essential. He argued that literacy enabled Ancient Greece’s intellectual revolution. Oral cultures must “think memorable thoughts”, relying on rhyme, emotion, and cliché (陈词滥调) to preserve knowledge. Writing, by contrast, allows for precise, complex statements that can be examined, reviewed, and developed into logical arguments.
In our digital age, no technology has surpassed the complicated architecture of the book. While the internet offers fragmented (碎片化的) information, books provide rich context and sustained (持续的) logical connections. Reading is an active process that demands engagement and concentration — it is essentially thinking in dialogue with the text.
As our culture becomes increasingly dominated (支配) by short-form videos and attention-fragmenting content, we risk losing the capacity for complex reasoning. Reading and writing form the foundation of serious thought — a habit that unites history’s greatest minds. Before we yield (让步) our cognitive development to screens and algorithms (算法), we must carefully consider what we might be sacrificing.
32. What is the function of writing according to John Dos Passos
A.Revealing flaws in speech.
B.Recording spoken words.
C.Organizing thoughts.
D.Ensuring fluency.
33. What is the key advantage of writing over oral cultures
A.It ensures greater objectivity.
B.It makes for logical statements.
C.It preserves knowledge longer.
D.It requires “memorable thoughts”.
34. Why does the author describe reading as “thinking in dialogue with the text”
A.To stress its interactive feature.
B.To contrast with online reading.
C.To underline its logical structure.
D.To highlight its cultural relevance.
35. What is the best title for the passage
A.The Decline of Adult Literacy.
B.Writing and Reading-Keys to Deep Thinking.
C.Digital Age and Reading Habits.
D.IQ Decline and Reading Ability.

People favor humor, as it lights up daily moments, eases awkwardness and makes every interaction warm and enjoyable. This magic of humor doesn’t just work in daily life. ____36____ A little humor can greatly enhance scientists’ communication effect.
Firstly, humor simplifies tough scientific knowledge. ____37____. For example, explaining AI in self-driving cars with a funny analogy about “machines learning like clumsy toddlers” makes abstract ideas easy for non-professional groups to understand. ____38____ Scientists sharing clever and humorous stories about laboratory experiments on social media often attract more interactions than dry academic posts. Additionally, humor humanizes scientists, as seen in popular science lectures where light-hearted jokes help audiences feel closer to researchers.
____39____ The hidden risks deserve our attention. If the content itself is untrue, humor can even replace facts, leading the audience to form wrong opinions about scientific knowledge just based on the amusing posts they see. Overusing sarcasm or negative humor also has the opposite effect, as it will quickly make scientists lose the public’s trust and damage their credibility.
Proper humor use requires a balance between vivid expression and professional precision. It should neither overshadow the core scientific information nor be so shallow that it loses seriousness. Overuse harms professionalism. ____40____
A.You need to use humour with great care in such communication.
B.Scientists who master this balance can be more welcoming and popular.
C.It also boosts audience engagement effectively.
D.It helps break the impression of scientists being cold and distant.
E.It also shines in the field of science, especially online.
F.Humor in scientific communication is a double-edged sword, though.
G.It’s a helper in making complex concepts understandable to ordinary people.

I excelled at writing and had long been the top writer in my class. But then, Jim transferred to our school. He always seemed lost in his own world, leaving other students unsure how to approach him. It was obvious that he felt like an outsider, and I paid little attention to him at first—until the day everything changed.
It was a typical writing class until our teacher assigned a creative essay. I threw myself into the task, as confident as ever. When it came time to share our works, I listened politely to my classmates’ readings, but my mind was already wandering to the praise I was certain would come my way. Then Jim’s turn arrived. He stood up, his voice soft yet steady, and began to read. His words vividly painted a picture of an old, forgotten library—where time stood still and the pages of ancient books whispered tales of long-lost worlds.
When he finished, the classroom fell completely silent. Moments later, thunderous applause echoed through the room. Our teacher’s eyes sparkled with delight. “Jim,” she said warmly, “you have a rare gift. With such talent, you’re bound to win the upcoming writing competition.”
Her words hung in the air like a challenge. I had always been the star of our class’s literary circle, but now a new light had emerged—one that threatened to outshine mine. That evening, I poured my heart out to my father. After listening quietly, he sighed softly and said, “Jealousy is a thief that steals our joy. It’s easy to see Jim as a rival, but perhaps he’s just a fellow traveler on the same journey. Instead of pushing him away, why not reach out You might find that his light doesn’t dim yours—it only makes the world brighter.” At that moment, a sudden realization dawned on me.

Dear Chris,
How is everything going I’m writing to share my outdoor labor practice class last Friday.
Our class went to the school vegetable garden together. Some students pulled weeds, others watered vegetables, and I helped pick fresh cabbages. We worked cooperatively and chatted happily the whole time.
This activity meant a lot to me. I realized how hard farmers work to grow food. I also learned teamwork makes tough tasks easy. It was such a meaningful experience I’ll never forget.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节读后续写范文(两段合计约152词)
Paragraph 1:The next morning, I made up my mind to talk to Jim. I walked straight to his desk after class and greeted him nervously. I told him honestly how jealous I had felt after listening to his essay and apologized for my bad feelings. To my surprise, Jim smiled gently and said he admired my clear logic in writing. We talked a lot about our favorite writers and writing skills. We even promised to exchange our drafts and give advice to each other later.
Paragraph 2: As the writing competition drew near, Jim and I became unexpected partners. We met every afternoon to polish our articles together. He taught me how to use vivid descriptions while I helped him organize plots better. We pointed out each other’s weak points and cheered each other up when feeling stuck. On the competition day, we both performed well. This experience taught me that true excellence lies in learning from others instead of competing against them.
