The United Nations (UN) has set March 21, 2025, as the first yearly World Day for Glaciers (冰川) to ask everyone to help save glaciers.
Glaciers are not just important for the land. The water from glaciers is also good for rivers and seas. In some places, glaciers give water to people and animals. They help keep Earth’s temperature constant (恒温). They also hold 70% of Earth’s clean water.
However, climate change is making problems for glaciers. Many glaciers are disappearing (消失).
There will be less water for people to drink and farm. It is also bad for animals and plants. To deal with the problem, China is using smart ideas to slow down glacier melting (融化), UNESCO said.
One idea is to use special glacier blankets (毯子) to slow melting. At Dagu Glacier, these blankets covered 500㎡ and slowed melting by 34% (2020–2021). In Xinjiang’s Glacier No. 1, thinner blankets worked even better, cutting summer melting by up to 70%. The blankets block sunlight to protect the ice.
Scientists also create artificial snow (人造雪) to help glaciers stay cooler and melt more slowly. In April and May 2023, scientists did this in the Bailanghe Glacier. The glacier grew 5.9 percent bigger. Scientists use special devices (设备) to watch glaciers. This helps scientists know how glaciers are changing. By studying the numbers, scientists can find better ways to protect glaciers.
24.Why are glaciers important according to the passage
① They are important to rivers and seas. ② They cover 70% of the Earth’s surface.
③ Climate change makes problems for them. ④ They offer fresh water to people and animals.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ①④
25.What's the meaning of the underlined word “block” in Paragraph 4
A. stop B. choose C. mix D. change
26.What is the best title for the passage
A. UN creates World Day for glaciers
B. Climate change is destroying glaciers
C. Protecting glaciers to save our Earth
D. Using blankets and snow on glaciers

It was still only a little after 7 o’clock; the Sun was pale, and the air was cool. The morning smelled delicious. After a difficult walk, Sam finally sat down by the pool, put away his compass (指南针) and lifted his field glasses. There they are! The mother swan was only a few feet away. She was sitting very close, not moving. The father swan was nearby. Both birds were listening and waiting. Both birds saw Sam, but they thought it didn’t matter. Sam stayed with these two great birds in the wild, just like old friends. That made him really happy.
In the morning, when the Sun was up in the sky, Sam looked at the nest with the glasses again. At last, he saw a small head pushing through the mother’s feathers, the head of a baby swan. The baby climbed out of the nest. It had a grey head and neck, with soft fine feathers. Soon another baby appeared. Then another. Then the first one walked his way down into his mother’s feathers again for warmth. Then one tried to climb up his mother’s back, but her feathers were wet, and he fell off. The mother swan just sat and sat, enjoying her babies, watching them use their legs. One of the baby swans, more brave than the others, climbed out of the nest and walked around on the shore (岸边) of the island. When this happened, the mother swan stood up. It was time for her to lead her children to the water. The baby swans did as their mother did and soon found it easy to swim.
“One, two, three, four, five,” Sam counted. “One, two, three, four, five. Five babies, just as sure as I am alive! This is my lucky day.” The father swan, when he saw his children in the water, felt like he should act like a father. He began by making a speech.

31.In the past, the break time between classes was 10 minutes. Now it’s 15 minutes. This change catches the attention of students, parents, and teachers. But not everyone thinks the same.
For students, the extended (延长的) break is like a breath of fresh air. They now have more relaxing and enjoyable time. Some play games with friends, which makes them feel less worried. Others take a short walk, getting some exercise. However, some students worry that they might get too distracted (分心) during the longer break to put their heart into the next class.
Parents generally welcome the change. Their children can have enough time for both study and rest, which is good for their health. Besides, longer breaks are helpful to make students’ social skills better as they have more time to interact (互动) with classmates. But some parents also care about if the students are safe during the longer breaks.
The teachers can have casual chats during this longer time. So they think it’s a good chance to build a better relationship with children. However, they also need to make teaching plans wisely enough to make sure the longer breaks make no difference to lessons.
Every coin has two sides, and so does the 15-minute break. With right guidance (引导), it can bring more good to everyone.
