FarmsForever is our way of connecting you with the Hudson Valley’s fall harvest. Each week throughout October, we’re offering safe and enjoyable ways to celebrate our region’s amazing things.
We’re so grateful that farmers have worked with us to permanently conserve more than 18,000 acres (英亩) of agricultural land. Calling attention to their commitment to farming — now and for future generations — is why we host our annual Farmland Cycling Tour.
This year, we want to hear about your connections to local farms and the produce that makes this season so special — by sharing it at FarmsForever.
Week One: Ride It While we’re not able to host a group ride this year, we are making it easy for you to ride the route yourself, with free, downloadable GPS files of our 25-mile and 45-mile bike routes. Week Two: Dig It To support community farming, we’re excited to update you this week on two projects that Scenic Hudson plans to develop: urban farms in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie.
Week Three: Spin It Join Project Manager Anthony on a 15-mile virtual ride past beautiful farms. From the comfort and safety of your own bike, you can enjoy the same workout and sights experienced by cyclists who participate in our Farmland Cycling Tour through a professionally produced video class. Week Four: Carve It This year, we can’t host our popular Pumpkins in the Park gathering, but we’ve come up with some fun virtual alternatives. You and your family can create a FarmsForever jack-o’-lantern, share in the Halloween spirit and support our local farmers.

A month or two after I started teaching in New York, I had to make some changes to the class schedule. “We’ll need to prepone the test, I’m afraid,” I said, preparing myself to deal with the complaints from my students that were sure to follow. Instead, there was a deafening silence. I looked around to see my students’ faces — their blank expressions told me that “I have no idea what you just said.”
It was then that I found out that prepone was not an actual word in English, based on the belief held by linguistic (语言学的) authorities that all proper words in a language must be found in a dictionary. I had grown up in India where people believe prepone means the opposite of postpone. In my native country, fluency in English is regarded as a mark of better education. As an English major, I possessed a wide vocabulary and a deep fondness for reading Dickens, Austen and other literary giants, and my comfort in English had gradually shaped my sense of self.
While leaving India took me out of my familiar linguistic environment, it also opened my eyes to the rich world of English. In fact, there are many varieties of English that have developed in English- influenced countries like Singapore, South Africa and Malaysia. These countries have taken a foreign language they gradually adopted and made it their own. Despite the linguistic dominance, it is reasonable to acknowledge the value of these localized versions of English instead of just seeing them as “not right.”
Though prepone has not yet been formally recognized as standard English, it shouldn’t be considered as a wrong English word. These days, I’ve made it my mission to make this little word widely liked and tell my students all about it! I firmly believe that such localized expressions deserve to be valued rather than dismissed.
4. Why was there silence among the students
A.They were preparing themselves for a test.
B.They were confused by the class schedule.
C.They lacked concentration at that moment.
D.They failed to get what the teacher said.
5. How did the author feel about his English level
A.Anxious.
B.Ashamed.
C.Confident.
D.Doubtful.
6. Why are many countries mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.To stress they truly value foreign languages.
B.To highlight standard English is dominant.
C.To demonstrate English is widely spread.
D.To prove English has diverse varieties.
7. What message does the author want to convey in the passage
A.Localized English matters.
B.Standard English has tricky words.
C.English emphasizes accuracy.
D.English may well be undervalued.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed an adaptable algorithm (算法), which can improve road safety by predicting when drivers are able to safely interact with in-vehicle systems or receive messages, such as incoming calls and driving directions.
“If you’re in a demanding driving situation, that would be a bad time to interrupt the driver with a message on a screen,” said co-first author Bashar Ahmad. A driver’s workload can change frequently. Driving in a new area, in heavy traffic or poor road conditions, for example, is usually more demanding than a daily commute.
The algorithm analyzes the driver’s behaviour and road conditions to measure the driver’s workload, so that the driver and the in-vehicle systems such as navigation (导航) and advanced driver assistance systems can interact at the right time. In that case, drivers are only prompted at times of low workload, so they can keep their full concentration on the road in more stressful driving situations.
To measure drivers’ workload, the researchers first collected drivers’ subjective workload information during driving. For the experiment, a phone showing a route on a navigation app was fixed to the car, next to a small LED ring light that would flash at regular periods. Participants all followed the same route through a mix of rural, urban and main roads. They were asked to push a finger-worn button whenever the LED light turned red and they perceived they were in a low-workload situation.
Video analysis of the experiment, paired with the data from the buttons, allowed the researchers to identify high-workload situations. The researchers used the on-road data to develop a machine learning framework to assess drivers based on their average workload, and a Bayesian filtering approach to estimate the drivers’ real-time workload.
“This research is vital for understanding the impact of our design from a user’s perspective, so that we can reduce unnecessary interruptions and continually improve safety and driving experiences,” said Senior Technical Specialist Lee Skrypchuk.
8. What is the main function of new algorithm
A.To guide drivers directly in unfamiliar areas.
B.To reduce traffic accidents on main roads.
C.To test advanced driver assistance systems.
D.To support safe driver-vehicle interactions.
9. What does the underlined word “prompted” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Praised.
B.Messaged.
C.Monitored.
D.Restricted.
10. What did pressing a finger-worn button indicate in the experiment
A.A relaxed driving state.
B.A request for higher speed.
C.A complex road condition.
D.A failure of the LED light.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A.How to Drive
B.When to Interrupt
C.Who’s Driving
D.What’s Algorithm
D
Many cultures have the typical example of independent geniuses. The truth, however, is that this model is more fictional than real. There are examples of great minds who did their best work alone, but over the course of history, groundbreaking insights tend to prefer groups of people sharing, reviewing, and evaluating each other’s ideas through shared social networks.
Innovation clusters (集群) are a modern interpretation on this historic trend. These hotbeds of creative businesses produce new technologies at fantastic rates. These businesses attract money, talent, and experienced workers, and then more new industries can be attracted to the area. Why they work and how they operate can cast light on the nature of innovation and offer a blueprint for a more inventive future.
The idea that businesses tend to cluster isn’t new. However, the idea of purposefully concentrating businesses together to focus on innovation, research, and development is more recent. The results have been mixed but are absolutely breathtaking when they turn out.
The best example is California’s Silicon Valley, where thousands of high-tech companies are based. In 2018, the Brookings Institution investigated Silicon Valley. It reported the density (密度) of firms within a given area was regarded as a crucial element, with more firms often leading to higher productivity increases for the region.
However, innovation clusters aren’t a risk-free move. There are cases of clusters that ultimately came to nothing. Malaysia’s BioValley, an attempt to create an innovation cluster, was such an example. While the Malaysian government made a large amount of funding available for this project, the businesses could not take advantage of it. BioValley lacked enough skilled workers for the proposed companies, and it had difficulties convincing qualified workers from elsewhere to come to Malaysia. Besides, it lacked local demand for biotechnology to keep new businesses running once started. Just because an area would like to be the site of a new innovation cluster doesn’t mean it can be.
12. What is a common misunderstanding of innovation
A.It is driven by individual wisdom.
B.It is based on the fictional models.
C.It can be fueled by social networking.
D.It arises from competition among geniuses.
13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.The significance of innovation clusters.
B.The rise of high-tech companies.
C.The strategies for promoting innovation.
D.The pattern of business operation.
14. What does the example of Silicon Valley imply about business clustering
A.It guarantees economic stability.
B.It produces remarkable outcomes.
C.It weakens competitive pressure.
D.It rarely applies to high-tech fields.
15. Which of the following measures can help solve BioValley’s problems
① Import more advanced equipment
② Establish more training programs
③ Secure the supply of qualified workers
④ Increase investment in the biotechnology project
⑤ Stimulate a market for biotechnological products
A.①②⑤
B.①③④
C.②③⑤
D.③④⑤

Recently, I came across an image on the Internet: a crying Earth surrounded by fallen trees, declaring, “No intelligent species would destroy their own home.” This image troubled me deeply. I refuse to let my eight-year-old son believe humans are foolish. That’s not true. It’s easy to look at the damage and conclude we’re stupid. ____16____
Our ancestors (祖先) burned coal to solve urgent problems: growing more food, heating and lighting homes. ____17____ They chose fossil fuels out of love for a safer, easier life. That shared goal of a better life has led to amazing progress.
In the U.S. in 1895 one quarter of people died before age five. Today it’s under 1%, and we will keep pushing until it hits zero. Imagine the essays Ben Franklin or Mark Twain would write about this level of advancement. ____18____
So much of that achievement has been based on the fossil fuels we’ve burned, whether coal, natural gas or oil. We’ve learned that this harms both the environment and people. ____19____ It was not long ago that London cleaned its smoke-blackened air. When rain becomes acidic, the world changes its policies. When harms are done locally, we tend to be pretty good at cleaning things up.
As I thought about all this, my doubt about the crying Earth turned to a clear answer. ____20____ That doesn’t mean we’ll get everything right the first time. New problems are unavoidable in any effort to address climate change and intelligence doesn’t mean never making mistakes. It means seeing them, feeling responsible, and trying again — better, wiser, together.
A.But that’s not the whole story.
B.To our credit, we aren’t bad at addressing this.
C.Therefore, it is essential to abandon fossil fuels.
D.That is the story I need to believe: the story of us.
E.I want my son to think humans are problem solvers.
F.They simply didn’t have the science to see the long-term cost.
G.How would they keep tears from their eyes if they saw what we’ve achieved

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. Anxiously, I looked through the list of selected basketball players on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine.
Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, because I had failed the tryouts three times in a row. After school, as I went to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw my friends gathered there, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them.
As dad drove me home, he comforted me softly, “Well, failing to make the basketball team is not the end of the world, nor is it a sign of failure.” I shook my head, voice trembling with despair, “I really work hard every day, practicing shooting until my hands ache. But I’m just not good enough.” “Well, what are you going to do about it ” he asked. Surprised, I didn’t know what to say.
Seeing how depressed I was, dad came up with an idea. “The weekend is coming. Let’s go somewhere to relax and take your mind off basketball. You’ve been pushing yourself too hard lately.” I nodded weakly, not wanting to let him down, even though I still felt empty inside.
On Saturday morning, dad took me to the community swimming pool. I just sat by the pool, not in the mood to join. But when dad pulled me into the water, something unexpected happened — I felt extremely comfortable and relaxed as soon as my body touched the water. It seemed I was born to be in the water; every stroke (游泳姿势) felt natural, and I didn’t even need to try hard to stay afloat.
Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind.

第四部分 写作
第一节 邮件范文
Dear Edward,
How is everything going I took part in the school short video contest themed "Record Beautiful School Days" last week and can’t wait to share it with you.
My video records warm small moments: classmates helping each other with homework, teachers patiently explaining problems and our happy sports meet. Shooting it made me realize how lovely my school life is. Though I didn’t win first prize, I treasure this experience and learned to discover little beauty around me.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写范文
Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind. Maybe swimming was the sport that truly suited me instead of basketball. All those years I only focused on basketball and ignored my hidden talent in water. I swam back and forth excitedly, enjoying the light and free feeling water brought me. Dad smiled and told me everyone has their own shining field, and I shouldn’t stick to one failure.
I signed up for the school swimming team tryouts. I trained every weekend after that, practicing all swimming strokes carefully. When the tryout day arrived, I swam smoothly and finished ahead of most competitors. Finally I made the swimming team. I learned that failure in one field doesn’t mean I’m useless. We just need to find our suitable stage to shine.
