The young driving environmental change of desertification (沙漠化)
A group of young Chinese are working hard to save deserts. They want to turn their green dreams into real actions. In 2021, 23-year-old Zhong Lin returned to his hometown Minqin to start a tree-planting business. Since then, he has become a key role in local efforts to fight desertification. “My hometown has been fighting desertification since the Ming and Qing dynasties—making it one of the earliest places in China to do so,” he said. “But today, with an aging population, it’s time for us, the younger generation, to take up the duty.”
Zhong’s choice shows that more young people now see environmental protection as their duty and life-long jobs, not just a job for money. Of course, these choices come with challenges. The work itself is hard, too. But Zhong never gave up. In 2022, he started to share short videos of his daily planting work on Douyin. His videos unexpectedly drew lots of attention.
His biggest breakthrough came in 2024, when he appeared on the TV show called Become a Farmer, planting trees with famous stars. Since then, “Minqin Tree Planting Activity” has become very popular among young people. Deeply moved by Zhong’s story, more than 3400 volunteers took part in the activity to fight desertification this year. Half of these volunteers are young people aged 20 to 35.
According to Zhong, more than 800,000 trees have been planted this year, covering over 2,000 mu of land for desertification control. “Thinking only gives us problems, but ________.” Zhong said. The protecting work may not show results for years, but that doesn’t make it any less meaningful.

One summer day when I was in high school, my father gave me a task to buy some tools for our farm. I loved nothing better than driving our family’s truck to do something, but this time I was not so happy, because my father had told me I would have to ask for credit (赊账) at the store.
Sixteen is such a proud age. Young men at that age want respect but not pity. I had seen many times that my friends were refused when they asked for credit, and I could feel their disappointment and shame. So I knew clearly how difficult it might be for me to ask for credit.
The hot sun beat down heavily, making me feel uneasy. At the Davy Brothers’ store, Davy was talking to a farmer. After I finished choosing the things I wanted, I slowly walked over to him. “I need to put these on credit,” I said to him, shyly and carefully. The farmer gave me a kind look, but Davy’s face didn’t change at all. “No problem,” he said in a relaxed voice. “I know your daddy will pay for them in time.” Then he turned to the farmer, “This boy is James Williams’ son.”
The farmer nodded to me in a friendly way. I was so proud of my father. “James Williams’ son” — these three words opened the door to these adults’ respect and trust. At that moment, I fully understood how valuable my father’s good name was. Since then, I have also tried my best to pay attention to my own actions and behaviors.

Have you noticed how naturally we think of “three” when we talk about numbers
In some ways, “three” is a number that has magical power. We eat three meals a day. Traffic lights all over the world use three colors: red, yellow and green. And there is the rule of three. It is an age-old writing method. According to this rule, articles can always become more satisfying to readers if they come in threes.
What makes “three” so magical First, the human brain loves to find patterns—things that happen again and again in a regular way. How many times does something at least need to happen before our brain says, “This is really a pattern” The answer is three. Once can be seen as luck. Twice might still be coincidence (巧合). But when it happens three times, we believe it is a real pattern. Second, our brains can only remember limited (有限的) information at a time. An audience (听众) usually only remembers three things from a speech. Do you want something in your speech to stick in your audience’s minds Present it in groups of three.
The rule of three can be used in our daily lives as well. It can make many things easier. For example, many people like to add lots of tasks to their to-do lists. Experts, however, suggest they should list no more than three tasks. The next time we are making New Year’s plans, consider listing only three things to work on. The longer our list is, the less likely we are to keep it.

Maglev trains (磁悬浮列车) are a new kind of train in China. These trains do not touch the tracks (轨道). They float above the tracks by magnetic force. So they are very fast and quiet.
China began to study maglev technology many years ago. In 2003, Shanghai opened the first commercial (商业的) maglev line in the world. It goes from Longyang Road Station to Pudong Airport. It is about 30 kilometers long. The train can run at 431 km/h and takes only 8 minutes to finish the trip.
Now, China has two kinds of maglev trains: high-speed and low-speed. Some big cities like Beijing and Changsha have low-speed maglev trains for people to travel around the city. In 2021, China made the world’s fastest maglev train in Qingdao. It can run at 600 km/h.
According to the national 15th Five-Year Plan, China will try to start building 1—2 high-speed maglev demonstration lines (示范线路) before 2030, such as lines between Shanghai and Hangzhou, and in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which are now in the research or early preparation stage.
Maglev trains are good for us. They are safe, clean and comfortable. They make little noise and no pollution. Now China is building more maglev lines between cities. In the future, it will be easier and faster for people to travel by maglev train.
