When fishing tools are lost or thrown away in the ocean, they are known as useless gear (渔具). Ghost nets can be as large as a football field. Since they are made to catch fish, they can continue killing sea life for many years after they are left behind. That’s why they are called “the hidden killers” of the ocean.
Edgardo Ochoa, a safety officer from an ocean protection organization, is working hard to solve this problem. Ochoa started training local divers (潜水员) and community members to remove ghost gear from the ocean. The training includes not only how to safely remove the nets, but also how to stop fishing gear from being lost in the first place. Each diver is given a clear role. They learn to use special bags to lift heavy nets, cut the nets safely, and communicate underwater with simple body signs.
Up to now, Ochoa and his team have trained 150 divers in 10 countries, including Mexico, Colombia, and Indonesia. Together, they have removed several hundred kilograms of nets and fishing lines from the sea. What’s more, each trained diver can then train more local people. This way, the good influence can spread even further. Ochoa’s big dream is to build a global network of clean-up teams. A single trained diver is able to help clean dozens of sea areas and encourage more people to make a change.
There are also activities for everyone to join in. Ochoa and his team aim to get 100,000 volunteers each year to walk and clean up for 10 miles. Along the way, they clean beaches, streets, country roads and parks. The purpose of the activity is to reduce plastic pollution and protect the ocean.
As we can see, ghost nets are a serious problem, but with more people working together, we can make the ocean a cleaner and safer place for all living things.

A good friend always tells her kids, “There’s no lift to the top. You have to take the stairs.” That’s good advice because becoming an expert in anything requires time and a lot of effort. 36 One idea that explains this is the “10,000-hour rule,” which Malcolm Gladwell popularized in his book Outliers.
The 10,000-hour rule suggests that it takes about 10,000 hours of careful practice to master (精通) any skill. This idea comes from research by psychologist (心理学家) Anders Ericsson. 37 Whether you want to play the violin, do well in sports or master computer programming, the basic rule is the same. Expertise (专业技能) is gained through practice, not luck.
38 How well you practice matters as much as how much you practice. Practice must be on purpose, and you need to challenge yourself to improve certain things. For example, a piano player might work on mastering difficult passages rather than just playing familiar pieces over and over.
However, becoming a top learner by following the 10,000-hour rule is not set in stone. 39 If you expect hours of practice to be the only way to greatness, you will be fooling yourself.
Becoming an expert is a great goal to work toward. 40 You can still enjoy something without being the best in the world at it.

It’s reported that labor education has been included in the education of middle schools and primary schools in China. I think it is very meaningful. It not only keeps us physically fit and strong, but also offers a perfect way to relax our tired minds after long hours of study.
I often help my parents do housework at home, like washing dishes, sweeping the floor and folding clothes. At school, I clean the classroom and water flowers. Every time I finish a task, I feel happy and proud.
I hope schools can offer different kinds of labor classes, such as cooking or gardening. Also, holding competitions about labor skills is a good idea. Labor makes us grow up better. Let’s take action now.
