Have you ever paid attention to your school’s security guards (保安) or dining hall staff (员工) Would you say “good morning” to your school cleaners For high school student Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students ignore the jobs done by non-teaching workers. He wanted to make a change.
The boy together with several other students, worked on a project. They hoped more students would see and respect the non-teaching workers on campus (校园). The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard University and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social issues (问题).
“My team members and I sent questionnaires to 160 students,” said Ding. “In one question, 60 per cent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers, while only 17 per cent strongly believe that every student should do so.”
The team also observed interactions (相互作用) between students and workers. “When most students follow the rules of their teachers, one third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants (宿舍管理员),” said Ding.
The main reason, according to Ding, is that they know little about them. They also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding’s team shot videos to show non-teaching workers working around campus. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching workers to increase their interaction.
“We’ve also made a series of stickers,” said Ding. “We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching workers more.”

①These days, smart homes have quietly stepped into countless Chinese families, blending new technology with the warmth of traditional family life. They are no longer distant ideas in science fiction, but practical tools that make daily life easier. For modern Chinese families, smart homes are not just about convenience; they also keep traditional family values alive. While smart homes bring greater convenience and comfort, people still value the warmth that has been in Chinese culture for thousands of years.

46.Last week, I asked a worker to help me repair my old house. On the first day of the job, it was so awful. When he was about to work, he found he had left his tools for work at home, and his car broke down on the way. While I drove him home, and his wife telephoned to say that his son had a bad cold.
He was silent all the way. When we arrived, he invited me to meet his family.
As we walked towards the front door, he stopped at a small tree and touched the tree with his hands. When we opened the door, I was very surprised to see that the worker wore a big smile. It seemed that he changed into another person. He hugged his son and gave his wife a kiss.
After a while, when he walked to the car, I asked him why he had touched the tree.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Sometimes I have trouble with my job, but one thing is for sure—it doesn’t belong to my wife or my son. So I just hang up the trouble on the tree when I come home every night. Then the next morning I pick it up. However, when I pick it up, I hardly remember what I put the night before.”
