There’s no denying that learning a foreign language is difficult, and when it comes to speaking the language, it can be extremely tough. I remember walking into my first-ever Spanish class at university only to discover that half of my classmates were already fluent in many languages. It’s safe to say I felt out of my depth!
At first the thought of speaking Spanish terrified me; not only were my vocabulary and grammar very limited, but I had never spoken another language before. However, I was determined to overcome my fear, and by adopting a few simple methods I have built my confidence and make progress. In fact, it was not as terrible as I thought. Here, I think I will share a few tips with you.
Firstly, it is OK to make mistakes for language learners and that you should accept them. This sounds obvious, but when it comes to language learning we often aim for perfection and feel as though we are not ready to speak until we have “enough” words or grammatical knowledge. The truth is that you will never feel ready, and instead it is important to use the knowledge to communicate what you can.
This leads on to my next tip: don’t compare yourself to others. This can be a hard one, especially if you are in a large language class. It is important to remember that we all learn at different speeds and through different styles of learning. Something that really helped me progress was finding a patient language exchange partner. Finding someone whose level of English was similar to my level of Spanish to practice with made me feel much more confident.
Lastly, celebrate the small success and remember how far you have come! Instead of focusing on how far you have to go, focus on the progress you have already made and be proud of your achievements!

The proposal for a new Indonesian capital city has been on the cards ever since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945. The political and economic crises which followed have long delayed the plan, but current president, Joko Widodo, now appears determined to make the move a reality. The government officially confirmed that the capital will be moved from Jakarta to a new location within Kalimantan, part of the island of Borneo in Indonesia.
A number of factors are likely to have influenced the decision to forge ahead with the move, but it seems likely that Jakarta’s environmental problems are chief among them. Built on swampy(沼泽的)ground, Jakarta is sinking, in some parts at a rate of 20cm a year. Experts predict that most of northern Jakarta could sink beneath the sea by 2050. What’s more, Jakarta is rarely mentioned without reference to its extreme levels of traffic jams and air pollution. There could be other reasons too. John McCarthy, an expert on land use in Kalimantan at the Australian National University Crawford School points to a potential desire to spread wealth throughout Indonesia. “Jakarta is the most highly developed core of Indonesia which sucks all the money and opportunities from other areas,” he says. “I think there’s logic in splitting the economic and political capital.”
But the location of this new political center is proving controversial. Some environmental groups are concerned that the chosen location in East Kalimantan will increase logging and destruction of nearby forests, home to orangutans and other endangered species. Indonesia’s planning minister previously told reporters that the new capital will be a sustainable “forest city” that won’t result in the destruction of protected forests, but how exactly this would work has not yet been explained.
Despite these challenges, the government is now putting its plan in motion. But even if this new capital is built, Jakarta will still need protection. Home to ten million people, the city simply can’t be neglected.
5. What is the Indonesian government’s new plan
A.Building a forest city.
B.Developing resources of Borneo.
C.Electing a new president.
D.Relocating the capital city.
6. What may be the main reason for the government’s decision
A.To reduce land pollution.
B.To seek better living environment.
C.To make full use of swampy ground.
D.To balance the economic growth between cities.
7. What worries some people about the government’s choice
A.It may cost a lot of money.
B.It may destroy the local ecosystem.
C.It may disrupt many residents’ normal life.
D.It may cause the decline of the old capital city.
8. What does the underlined word “neglected” probably mean
A.Ignored.
B.Ranked.
C.Repaired.
D.Damaged.

Learning a new language can improve brain health, according to a study. Researchers found that older adults who studied Spanish had similar improvements in critical cognitive skills (关键认知技能) as those who took part in brain training activities focusing on those skills. Participants in the study learning Spanish also reported greater enjoyment than those taking part in brain training.
The researchers noted early studies have found that bilingual individuals (掌握两种语言的人) develop dementia (痴呆) later in life, suggesting that bilingualism has a protective effect on brain health. According to the researchers, the study is among the first to examine whether the process of learning a language can benefit (有利于) brain health in similar ways as bilingualism.
“The people in our study showed cognitive improvements without becoming fluent in Spanish, which suggests that you don’t have to be bilingual for your brain to benefit from working with another language,” said Ellen of Psychology at York University. “This is encouraging since bilingualism is often reached early in life and difficult to achieve in adulthood, but we can choose to learn another language at any age to get some of the cognitive benefits enjoyed by bilingual individuals.”
The study found 76 adults aged 65 to 75 years, all of whom spoke only one language, were cognitively healthy, had never formally studied Spanish before and had not studied any other language in the past 10 years. These people were divided into 3 groups: language learning, brain training, or a wait list serving as a control group. For 16 weeks, people either spent 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week learning Spanish using Duolingo, an online language learning app, or used Brain HQ by Posit Science for the same amount (数量) of time.
“Besides the cognitive benefits, learning a second language may enrich older adults’ lives in other important ways, for example, by leading to new friendships or opening the door to a new culture or travel, helping them live life to the fullest,” said Jed Meltzer, Ph.D.
9. What did the study find
A.Learning a new language is good for cognitive skills of older adults.
B.Brain training activities have a much bigger effect on cognitive skills.
C.Learning a language is more enjoyable than doing brain training activities.
D.Bilingual individuals can develop critical cognitive skills in a special way.
10. What did early studies suggest about bilingualism
A.It puts people at risk of dementia.
B.It is good for people’s brain health.
C.It can help adults get through difficult times.
D.It can give people a chance to explore a new world.
11. How were the people in the study chosen
A.Based on their level in Spanish.
B.Based on their learning experiences.
C.Based on their age, cognitive health, and language background.
D.Based on their preferences for language learning or brain training.
12. What did Jed Meltzer talk about in the last paragraph
A.Some influences of learning a language on cognitive skills.
B.Some other advantages of learning a new language.
C.Some workable ways to learn a second language.
D.Some facts about old people learning a language.

Music is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. Its impact on the human brain and emotions is profound. Studies have shown that listening to music can reduce stress, alleviate pain, and improve mood. A song from our past can instantly transport us back to a specific time and place, ___39___ (trigger) a flood of associated emotions. My friend Emma has always been involved in community service. She and her husband founded a clothing center, offering free clothes, shoes, etc. to anyone who needs them.
Then there’s me. I’d never been involved in community service. Instead, I spent my time and money buying snacks, dining out, watching TV and movies etc.
That changed one evening last winter when Emma called me. She told me she needed my help and then asked what I would do the next evening. I replied briefly that I wanted to see a film.
“But David, tomorrow I need your help for several hours at my clothing center,” Emma continued. “I had a family who signed up to help this week, but they’ve got the flu. My husband and I can’t run the place alone.” I hesitated, thinking I might not be able to help since I had never been to her clothing center before. But Emma insisted, saying that the next evening she needed me to boldly go where I had never gone before. Since my friend was desperate, I had to agree.
At 6:45 the next evening, I showed up at the clothing center in an old brick building on Main Street.
“Thank you,” said Emma when I arrived. “It’s really simple. My husband and I will manage the actual clothing room; we just need you to run the welcome table by the door. Have people line up, make sure they know what they need, give them a bag, and then we’ll take them in one at a time. In the past few weeks, we’ve got a ton of donations of clothes, shoes, gloves, etc., so we should be able to help many people.”
The directions seemed clear enough; I figured I could handle it. How many people in my town were going to show up on a snowy Wednesday night for free clothes anyway At 7:00 pm, Emma unlocked the front door.

Dear Mike,
How is everything going I’m writing to share my experience in our school’s photo show themed Labor Is Glorious held last week.
My photo takes a cook at the school canteen as the subject. It records him preparing fresh food carefully before sunrise. His focused face fully shows the beauty of labor. Seeing my work displayed makes me proud.
I truly realize every laborer deserves respect. Labor brings warmth and value to our daily life. Hope you can share some similar activities with me soon.
Yours,

读后续写范文
Looking out, I was surprised by the number of people who would come in. Crowds of people stood in the cold snow waiting patiently outside. Some were parents with little kids, while others were elderly people wrapped in thin coats. I quickly handed out paper bags and guided them to line up smoothly. Many people thanked me warmly when receiving clothes. Watching their relieved smiles, I felt a strange sense of warmth I had never felt from watching movies or eating snacks. I completely forgot my original plan to watch a film.
That snowy Wednesday night marked the beginning of my journey into community service. After that day, I volunteered at the clothing center every week in my spare time. I sorted donations, helped choose suitable clothes for visitors and chatted with them to ease their worry. I finally understood that giving help to others brought far greater joy than only enjoying myself. I also made many kind friends there. I’m really thankful to Emma for pulling me into this meaningful volunteer work.
