Mole Day
Every year, it’s celebrated with a new focus from scientists and chemistry students throughout the United States and around the world from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. (18:02) on October 23rd because when written in the month-date format (格式), the date and time 6:02, 10/23 include the digits in Avogadro’s number (6.02×10 ) in honor of the mole, a measuring unit in chemistry.
Yellow Pig Day

Tau Day
This has much to do with the Pi Day holiday. It has been held every year since 2010 on June 28th, or 06/28. The day began as a way to recognize tau, τ. Tau is equal to 2π or 6.283. In recent years, some mathematicians and physicists have argued for the replacement of pi (π) by tau, but it is not yet widely accepted within the scientific community.
Palindrome Day
A palindrome happens when a word or number reads the same forwards and backwards. Palindrome Day falls on a date that can be read the same way backwards and forwards. Because date formats are different from country to country, not all dates that are palindromic (回文的) in one kind of date format are Palindrome Days in another. For instance, June 21st, 2026 or 6-21-26 is a palindromic date in the m-dd-yy format, but it isn’t if you write the date as dd-m-yyyy (21-6-2026) or dd-mm-yyyy (21-06-2026).

Marcel Ophuls, a celebrated documentary filmmaker, passed away at 97 in 2025.
Ophuls demanded his audience’s attention in documentaries lasting more than four hours, such as The Sorrow and The Pity and Hotel Terminus. He was famous for creating documentaries that ran for many hours. He said, “There is a relationship between attention spans (时长) and a sense of right and wrong. I think that, if you greatly reduce people’s attention span, you are left with only the attraction of power.”
Born in Germany, Ophuls escaped the Nazis with his family and moved to France. They eventually ended up in Hollywood, America, where his father, the well-known director Max Ophuls, found work. Ophuls started out making fiction films, too, but went on to become one of the main recorders of wartime terrible acts of the 20th century.
The Sorrow and The Pity is Ophuls’ 1969 classic set in France under German control. He interviewed different kinds of related people. Throughout the film, Ophuls appeared on camera and showed a complex, honest picture of the past. The film faced criticism in France for its documentary style. It became an art house hit, and it helped create a new kind of documentary, where the filmmaker takes an active part to explore human nature. For Hotel Terminus, which won the best documentary feature Oscar in 1988, Ophuls interviewed French writer René Tavernier, who lived through the period the film covers. “He knew that documentary sometimes has to be built as a fiction film,” Tavernier said. “You have to have interesting characters.”
Ophuls saw himself as both a storyteller and an entertainer (娱乐者), but he said that his mission was to make the world a better place through his works, going beyond entertainment. “Documentaries should make us reflect on our roles in life,” he said. His works showed that truth, even if uncomfortable, is key to understanding history.

On the surface, Western Australia’s Great Sandy Desert might appear calm. But deep underground, blind moles, a kind of animal covered in silky yellow fur, are “swimming” through the sand. These hard-to-find creatures spend so much of their lives below the surface that they remain largely unknown to wildlife biologists.
Now, Aboriginal rangers (护林员) have made a sighting of one of the animals called “kakarratul” by the Martu, the local people of central Western Australia. This marks the second kakarratul sighting in just six months. Historically, people only see the species five to ten times every ten years.
Kakarratuls are very small and have no eyes. Their bodies are covered in soft fur, and they primarily eat worms (蠕虫). They’re also perfectly adapted to life in the wild Australian land. Rather than living in the hot sun, they live almost entirely underground — digging (挖) holes as far as 8.2 feet below the surface — where they move through the sand in a unique way.
The Kakarratul is an amazing creature that “swims” through the sand of Australia’s western deserts. It makes its way and covers the sand while moving ahead. The creatures can survive by just “breathing the air that moves between sand,” wrote Joe Benshemesh, a biologist with the National Malleefowl Recovery Group, for Australian Geographic. “They save energy and resources by allowing their body temperature to reflect that of the surrounding sand,” he added.
The moles periodically come to the surface, especially during periods of cool, rainy weather. But they don’t appear often, so wildlife scientists don’t know their population size. They are regarded as a species of “least concern”. Local rangers try their best to take good care of kakarratuls, but they “aren’t easy to find,” said Lynette Wildridge, a senior Nyangumarta ranger.

Have you wondered if we could save our thoughts and memories in a computer It’s called mind uploading. There we’d live digitally, perhaps forever.
Within that simulated (模拟) environment, you could do anything you do in real life — eating, driving a car, playing sports. You could also do something impossible in the real world, such as walking through walls like in the science fiction films. Still, you may doubt. Yet science has a track record of turning supposed ideas into reality. Consider that science took people to the Moon, which too was once considered unlikely.
To upload a mind, we’d need to do the following. Simulate human senses. Without seeing, hearing, or feeling, life in a computer would be terrible. But doing that is way beyond today’s tech. Scan (扫描) the human brain completely. We’d need to map every tiny neuron (神经元) (there’re 86 billion!) and how they connect. Now, scientists are only at the very early stages of brain mapping, which includes the entire brain of a fly. Replace the 86 billion real neurons with artificial ones, one at a time. That approach would make mind uploading much easier. Right now, though, scientists can’t replace even a single real neuron with an artificial one.
In a few years, a complete map of the human brain may be possible. Yet even recording the types of all 86 billion neurons, all smaller than a pinhead, and their billions upon billions of connections, still isn’t adequate. Uploading this information by itself into a computer won’t achieve much. That’s because each neuron always adjusts its functioning.
With technology developing rapidly, we can surely see big advances in computing power. Though difficulties are great and future progress remains unclear, I believe mind uploading will come true someday. Some hopeful views set the time at 2045, almost 20 years away. Others think it will happen by the end of this century. Personally, these two views seem too hopeful to me. I hardly think it can come true within a century. It may take as long as two hundred years.
