The Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 has taken theaters by storm both in China and worldwide since its release on January 29. Yet for Lyu Yanting, the voice behind the main character Nezha, the film’s success was unimaginable when she first took on the role. “I saw it as just another dubbing (配音) project,” Lyu recalled.
As she explored Nezha’s lines and story, she realized that this adaptation offered a fresh take on the legendary character. Nezha’s origins trace back to the Tang Dynasty, when he was first pictured as a heavenly guardian. Over the centuries, his image evolved through cultural reinterpretations — transforming into a rebellious (叛逆的) figure who fights against fate and authority, fights for his beliefs and loved ones, and grows into a powerful warrior by overcoming hardship.
Lyu found herself deeply resonating with this modern version of Nezha, particularly his determination, sincerity, and resilience. This connection made her performance feel authentic, as if she were drawing on real emotions rather than simply acting.
However, finding a role that is naturally consistent with oneself is rare. This is why Lyu believes that professional voice actors must constantly refine their skills, always preparing for any character that may come their way.
“To be a good voice actor, you need to empathize, imagine, and truly understand the character, which requires both life experience and the ability to see things from different perspectives,” Lyu said, “Only by combining personal experience with professional training can you bring different characters to life.”
To achieve that, immersion is key. Before voicing Nezha, Lyu spent years in being alone to improve her skills. “I was fascinated by anything related to vocal expression — I explored and analyzed it to see how it could enhance my future work. That was simply my passion,” she said.
Thanks to those years, Lyu was well-prepared when she landed the role of Nezha. Although she describes her newfound recognition as “a pure stroke of luck”, it was much more than that.

For many people, the taste of coffee is rather common, while for others it seems sour or bitter . But for hearing-impaired barista Zeng Zheng and his workmates in Chongqing, coffee means a rich and pleasing variety of taste experiences.
There is even some variety in the different forms of sweetness, according to Zeng, with some hitting the palate from the start, while others firstly seem bitter but finally turn into sweetness. It seems to reflect Zeng’s life experience. Together with several hearing-impaired workmates, he works at a coffee shop named Yijiao Cafe, which located at Songshan General Hospital. It is one of two branches with the same name, which translates as One Corner Cafe. The name was inspired by a famous children’s book called The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein. The spirit of the story is that one can find happiness by accepting one’s personal imperfections.
Zhu Jiayun , head of a charity for people with disabilities in Chongqing’s Yuzhong district, founded the brand in May 2022. In September 2022, Yijiao held a free barista training program for the hearing -impaired. The program interested Zeng and others who used to make a living by doing low-skilled jobs. Four out of the 15 people were then chosen to work at the coffee shop by Zhu after a strict examination. In the same month, the first Yijiao Café shop, located in Yuzhong district, opened its doors.
In February 2023, the second coffee shop opened in Songshan General Hospital. In just a month, the new coffee shop sold more than 3,700 cups of coffee. For every 10 yuan made by the store, 0.1 yuan is given away to others in need, said Zhu.
Zhu plans to open three more coffee shops in 2023. “I hope that Yijiao Cafe is more than just a coffee shop, but can also serve as a model space, where the healthy people and disabled people can make coffee, drink coffee, or live and work together,” Zhu said.

Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play e and get your script (剧本).”I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character, a Scrooge (吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked,“Who did this ” Nobody knew. We started rehearsing (排练), but my heart wasn’t in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn’t happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can’t do it. Please get someone else!”

Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. Turning around, I saw Jim standing there with a worried look. He told me he hated the rude laughter and thought my performance was moving and wonderful. Soon other classmates crowded into the room to comfort me. They said they admired my hard work and hoped I wouldn’t give up the role. Their sincere words warmed my heart and wiped away my sadness. I made up my mind to stick to the play and do my best.
The following Thanksgiving day, we were ready for the play. Standing on the stage, I calmed down and focused fully on my lines. When the scene of slipping and kissing Jim’s hand came, I acted naturally without nervousness. The whole audience kept quiet and watched attentively. After the play ended, warm applause burst out. Many teachers and students came to praise my touching performance. I realized courage and kindness could beat any teasing, and I was so glad I didn’t quit.
